[The Legend of Anle] [Adapted from a novel by Xing Ling]

[Episode 33]

Fortunately,

you only sustained a few scratches, Your Highness.

If it cut any deeper,

would take a week or two to heal.

Wen Shuo,

on the battlefield, don't treat me like the Crown Prince.

We are soldiers.

It is our duty to fight till we draw the last breath.

We decided to come here,

so we shouldn't let a minor injury get in our way.

All right.

I will be like you

and Anle.

I'll become a dauntless warrior.

Give others the ointment.

A lot of them are injured and they might not have enough ointment.

It's done, Young Lady.

Most of us here are injured too.

Young Lady, Yuanshu and I will see to it now.

Come on.

Check the casualties over there.

Bring water and food ration with you too.

So you want to check on Anle, Your Highness.

Why don't you go there yourself?

My hand is injured.

I'm indisposed.

I wonder who told me just now

that we shouldn't let a minor injury get in our way.

Just go.

Fine.

Yuanqin.

Wen Shuo.

It's been a while.

I have so many things to tell you.

Your Highness,

Young Lady asked me to come here to check on you.

I am well.

But you, who fought the Northern Qin army for a night,

must have sustained heavy casualties.

Your Highness. I have many things to tell Yuanqin.

If you want to check on Anle, please do it yourself.

Let's go.

You're drinking, Official Di.

What if you're too stupefied to give commands later?

Drink the strongest liquor before I kill the fiercest enemy.

That's what I call living.

Do you want a sip, Your Highness?

Right.

You can't hold your liquor. One sip is enough to get you drunk.

And you'll start confessing to everyone.

The consequences may be dire if you reveal our military intel to the Northern Qin.

I am the Crown Prince of Jing.

I will never sell my nation out.

As to whether or not I will confess to everyone,

that depends.

Ziyuan.

Thank you for looking past old grudges

and for joining me in this war.

Our feud aside,

we live in the same nation.

Yuanqin.

There is a war out there.

You have to be careful. Don't get hurt.

And don't be afraid.

I'll protect you.

I can't fight,

and I am not deployed on the battlefield.

All I can do

is dress your wounds

and deliver the food supply.

We need a full tummy to win the war. Your contribution is essential.

The bread is cooked. I'll give it to Young Lady.

Just eat it here.

Anle and His Highness finally had the chance to talk.

Don't disturb them.

Stay here.

Okay.

They finally overcame the differences between them.

After Anle resumed her identity as Di Ziyuan,

they somehow became strangers.

His Highness and Young Lady care about the people.

And they will fight for them.

Perhaps they can only live as Ren Anle and Han Ye

when they are far from the capital.

After I returned from Huayuan Mountain,

I thought there would only be two options for us.

Which are?

Either we become enemies

or we go our separate ways.

But fate gave us the third option.

Ziyuan.

I'm so glad that we can

fight together.

Official Luo.

Where is Official Di?

There are many nooks and crannies in this canyon.

Search everywhere now. Find me Official Di and her army.

Yes, sir.

How did you know I'd be here?

I intercepted an intel from the Northern Qin Army,

so I was aware that they set up an ambush in the canyon.

But we obtained the movements of Northern Qin first.

Something is off with the intel.

Releasing false information

to lure me into coming here...

Ziyuan.

Luo Mingxi.

Why are you here too?

I intercepted an intel. Are you all right?

You too?

Yes.

I came because of that intel too.

But less than 1,000 enemies were found here.

Oh, no. It's a red herring.

[Half a day ago]

I will lead my army.

[Qingnan City] I will be the bait

to lure the Northern Qin Army into the trap.

They boast a greater number,

but we have the geographical advantage.

Once I draw their attention,

you'll activate the traps

and catch them by surprise.

We disrupt their tempo.

Then, we rain a thousand arrows to pierce their armor.

I will make them chase me around the city thrice to exhaust them.

While you take advantage of the situation to reduce their elite forces.

That way,

we can outwit them

and defend Qingnan.

We are not aiming for a victory.

We just need to buy enough time till our reinforcements arrive.

My comrades in Qingnan,

we have someone to protect

and a city to defend.

The Northern Qin Army cannot kill us.

Bring it on!

Come on!

You think you can kill me?

Charge!

Charge!

Charge!

General Anning.

Resist no further.

Surrender now and you may be spared.

To die on a battlefield

is an honor.

I refuse to be a coward

and surrender to my enemy!

My spear will decide

who lives or dies today.

In that case,

I shall grant your wish.

- Kill her! - Halt!

Halt!

Halt immediately!

She is the commander-in-chief of Jing. We capture her alive.

Now only you show your face.

Mo Bei.

Have you no shame?

Anning.

Drop your weapon now.

If you surrender,

I can guarantee

that you'll keep your position.

I will not allow you

to use me to humiliate my nation.

Anning.

I'm warning you now. Choose your battles wisely.

Unlike the Jing State,

we don't pardon those who won't surrender.

Instead, we will conquer with force.

Shame on you.

How else are we supposed to bring Jing to its knees?

The Jing State has millions of brave souls.

You can never make us surrender!

Princess Anning!

I'm asking you one last time.

Will you surrender or not?

Surrender?

Even when I die,

I will not bow down to you.

Careful, sir!

- Shoot! - No!

Is it over?

Is this the end?

If I hadn't headed to Jingxin Hall that night,

I wouldn't have learned the truth.

I wouldn't have felt guilty

and stayed in the Northwest.

I wouldn't have met Lengbei,

and I wouldn't have lost Qingnan City.

Alas, my life

wasn't what Father had hoped for me,

a life of peace and longevity.

Your Highness.

Your Highness.

We lost Qingnan City.

General Anning had fallen.

What?

The Northern Qin invaded all of a sudden.

General Anning defended the city

till the very end

and never conceded.

Your Highness,

she was waiting for reinforcements as she drew her last breath.

Bai Zheng.

You're telling me

that the Northern Qin Army attacked yesterday?

Anning could have evacuated her men out of Qingnan City.

Why did she stay?

Your Highness,

General Anning thought her defense could create an opportunity for us to retaliate.

Luo Mingxi.

You were given the imperial order to bring reinforcements to Qingnan City.

Why are you here?

I made a mistake.

Your Highness, may I say something?

Go ahead.

We were close to Qingnan City,

but Official Luo here demanded us to reroute.

Your Highness.

General Anning died in vain.

Please right the wrong!

Please right the wrong, Your Highness.

Luo Mingxi. How dare you!

You misappropriated our army for your personal agenda!

I'm sorry.

Anning is dead.

Qingnan City has fallen.

Your apology holds no weight.

It's an irony!

Luo Mingxi should be beheaded

to rest General Anning's soul.

Luo Mingxi should be beheaded

to rest General Anning's soul.

Luo Mingxi should be beheaded

to rest General Anning's soul.

Luo Mingxi.

Your selfish command has made you lose the golden opportunity to help a general in need.

She died as a result and Qingnan City was claimed.

By martial law,

you ought to be beheaded.

Take him away.

Find a day to execute him.

Your Highness.

Your Highness.

Can I say something for Luo Mingxi?

Your Highness.

We need people right now.

If we kill Luo Mingxi, who can be our tactician?

We lost an experienced city defender

and an important military pass of Jing.

Ziyuan.

You know very well the gravity of his crime.

Only his death

can restore the army's morale.

Yes, he made a huge mistake.

The false information led him to a bad decision.

And he must be guilt-ridden by Anning's death.

That's why I hope you can

give him another chance to make up for his mistake.

How can he atone for Anning's death?

Anning is already dead.

I cannot let Luo Mingxi die as well.

If his death is what you want,

then take my life instead.

Ziyuan.

No one can serve the punishment in his stead.

Thousands of men have died in this war.

Many cities are in a shambles.

They all fought for Jing

and their deaths shouldn't be in vain.

If the army's morale is low, we won't be able to reclaim Qingnan City.

The Northern Qin will have swift access to the Jing State.

Our people are in danger.

Other than killing Luo Mingxi,

what else can I do?

Ziyuan.

You hold Luo Mingxi dearly.

Do you think he means nothing to me?

I already lost a sister. Do you think I want to lose a good friend?

I am Anning's brother,

Luo Mingxi's friend,

the Crown Prince of Jing, and the commander of an army.

The decision to kill him

is tough to make. But I did it.

Your Highness, Official Di.

Before General Anning fought in the war,

she said that if she...

It's a letter she told me

to deliver to Official Di and Your Highness.

Ziyuan, Ye.

May this letter find you well.

If you're reading this,

it means I broke my promise.

♫ I give up on my light and hide it under a bushel ♫

♫ You're the moon in my heart, I can't dream to own you ♫

In the past, I passed by Qingnan several times, but I never dared to set foot in.

♫ But I'm willing to forsake my life for you ♫

All because next to Qingnan City,

there was a barren land that housed the souls of 80,000 men who died for nothing.

♫ I'd go the distance for you, may the light stay with you ♫

♫ Romance aside, I fight for your destiny alongside you ♫

- Anle. - Anning.

In each other we found a confidant.

So today, we complete this ritual to become sisters in arms.

♫ You're my dream from the bygone youth, arriving at the end of my life ♫

After the Di saga concluded,

I wanted to head back to the Northwest to pay my respect to them.

♫ I bear no regrets. But will you still remember me when we reunite in our next life? ♫

However, the Northern Qin posed a threat.

I am the Princess of Jing and a general.

Yet throughout my life,

I fail as a daughter

and a government official.

I am ashamed to face my family and my country.

Still,

I want to do something, however insignificant it is,

to protect the resting place of those 80,000 souls.

For me,

only my death on the battlefield

can restore my dignity so that I can face those fallen souls in the afterlife.

The feud between the Hans and the Dis

started in Qingnan.

And so it shall end in Qingnan.

♫ Romance aside, I fight for your destiny alongside you ♫

Oh, you have nothing to do with what happened 10 years ago.

♫ You're my dream from the bygone youth, arriving at the end of my life ♫

If you didn't stand up for us,

the Di family's name...

♫ I bear no regrets. But will you still remember me when we reunite in our next life? ♫

And the name of those 80,000 souls

couldn't be cleared.

Ziyuan, Ye.

I'm sorry that I had to break my promise.

But it is my wish

to rest my soul in this place.

I hope that you two can support each other

and move on from the past.

Together, you'll

restore peace to the nation.

Although I might break my promise,

I have no regrets.

In the future,

please take care of yourself.

Yours Truly, Anning.

Anning...

We can't drink together anymore,

ride together anymore,

listen to music together anymore,

or fight together anymore.

Anning.

I'll bring you back tomorrow.

Your Highness,

you have been working for several days now,

and you didn't take any breaks.

Please eat something.

We have an emergency at hand. Qingnan City has fallen.

If I take a break,

another city might fall.

I know you're upset about Anning's death.

But now is not the time to grieve.

For the people of Jing,

we cannot stop here.

Your Highness,

I know.

Of all people, Anning's death

affects you the most.

I will always stay by your side.

Ever since Anning went to defend Qingnan City,

she never planned to make it out alive.

For a decade, she carried the burden of the past

all alone.

And she found her closure when her death drew near.

As her elder brother,

I was oblivious to her suffering.

Your Highness.

It's late now. Go to bed.

- Your Highness... - Now.

[Anning]

Growing up, you're the one who cares for me the most.

I am your brother.

What you don't want to face, what you don't want to do,

you can count on me to help you.

Just please, don't hide anything from me.

I understand.

But I know far too well the burden

of carrying a secret on your own.

[General Anning]

Bye.

Be safe.

[fell...]

Mingxi.

Ziyuan.

Sorry.

I couldn't convince Han Ye.

I should be the one apologizing.

Han Ye shouldn't pardon me anyway.

No.

I won't let you die.

Anning is dead. You're the only friend I have now.

I insisted on rerouting the reinforcements and defied the military order given to me.

Only my death can console the army.

And we need it to win this war.

When I felt helpless,

I could lead a carefree life for ten years thanks to you.

You toiled to exculpate the Di family.

I won't let Han Ye kill you.

Han Ye doesn't want to kill me. The soldiers do.

I can change their mind.

Ziyuan.

You once told me that as a descendant of the Di family,

I should have the bravado to turn the tides like the head of the Di family did.

Yes, I did say that.

Good then.

Wen Shuo. Visit her for me.

Bring her favorite snacks with you too.

Don't tell her I told you to do that.

Your Highness,

Wen Shuo is nowhere to be seen since this morning. No one knows where he went.

Han Ye.

I know Luo Mingxi's crime is punishable by death.

I will reclaim Qingnan City even if I have to risk my own life.

I hope this is enough to persuade you to spare him.

No.

Guards!

Yes, Your Highness.

Assemble the army. We are reclaiming Qingnan City.

What is the meaning of this?

Your Highness,

everyone is still mad about the death of General Anning.

If Luo Mingxi is not executed,

how can we convince others to follow us to fight back?

I'm afraid I cannot comply.

You refuse to comply.

You put yourself above the current emergency.

Have you forgotten why you wield your sword and why you don your armor?

You are all part of the Jing State.

Now that a calamity befell us,

you want to stay here and do nothing?

Your home, my home,

they are being ravaged

as we speak.

If we don't reclaim Qingnan City,

the Northern Qin will come charging straight sooner or later.

And when that happens, peace will be a luxury.

How many soldiers and citizens

will die under their cold steel?

How many families will be torn apart?

I know

you're mad because Anning and her men died in a tragedy that could be averted.

But they fought till the end.

For what? For our land. For our sovereignty.

For the lives of innocent people.

By reclaiming Qingnan,

we bring solace to our fallen brothers.

I am the Crown Prince of Jing,

Anning's brother,

and more importantly, your compatriot.

Does anyone here

want to join me

as we deliver

people from suffering,

as we defend the Jing State?

I will follow you, Your Highness.

I want to fulfill General Anning's last wish.

I will follow you, Your Highness.

After this battle,

I will deal with Luo Mingxi's crime

and give all of you a satisfactory answer.

Wen Shuo, why are you here?

I sneaked here.

I didn't tell His Highness.

Wen Shuo.

Tell me the truth now. Why did you follow us?

Anle, I was worried about you all.

I serve the Jing State,

so protecting our land is also my duty.

How selfless of you.

That's the Wen Shuo I know.

Mr. Wen, I heard

you studied a great many military literature with His Highness when you were little.

I'm sure you're acquainted with warfare.

According to Bai Zheng,

General Anning evacuated the city's supplies before the battle.

Qingnan City has no food

and the Northern Qin Army just claimed the city.

They won't have enough time to rest up,

so they remain weakened.

Perhaps this is our opportunity to retaliate.

Han Ye taught you well.

If Jinyan was still alive,

I bet he would just be as smart as you.

- Let's go. - Okay.

Let's go.

Charge!

Charge!

The Northern Qin Army has let their guard down.

We will scale the rampart with escalades

and create a ruckus.

That should draw the attention of our enemies.

And then, I'll head to where Mo Bei stays

and subdue him first, as he's the leader.

I will bring Anning back.

We will reclaim Qingnan.

Lengbei. Die!

Di Ziyuan.

You fight very well.

Hand over Anning's body.

Kill them. Our enemies are in a shambles.

Shouldn't you offer something in exchange?

I can't believe you would exploit her even when she's already dead.

Di Ziyuan!

Do you know?

While you sleep comfortably every night,

Anning would wake up often from her nightmare.

You forced her to betray her own grandmother,

to betray her own family.

Do you have any idea about the pain she felt?

She suffered

because of you.

Yet you accuse me of using her?

If you did care about her,

you would

give us a few cities,

sign a peace treaty, and offer a sum

in exchange for her.

She deserves to rest in her home country.

Lengbei.

Enough is enough.

She wouldn't have wanted us to relinquish any land.

Then pay with your life!

Eat this.

Anle. Are you okay?

Catch him.

Han Ye.

Sorry. I couldn't bring Anning back.

- Sorry. - You did so well already.

You reclaimed Qingnan.

Ziyuan?

Ziyuan?

Ziyuan?
