Junior Marquis, it's been a long time.

Oh, Official Ren.

Official Ren was so righteous that she helped me clear unjust accusations.

Official Ren was so righteous that she helped me clear unjust accusations.

- That's not worth talking about. - From now on, we're close friends who protect each other.

- That's not worth talking about. - From now on, we're close friends who protect each other.

- That's not worth talking about. - From now on, we're close friends who protect each other.

It is an honor for me to have helped you.

You must escape now.

The Crown Prince wants to capture you.

- Junior Marquis. - Your Highness.

I didn't mean that way, but here.

This way. Go. Hurry!

Where do you think you're going, Junior Marquis?

What was I thinking? I forgot this. He has a helper.

What was I thinking? I forgot this. He has a helper.

Junor Marquis, get over here.

I'll help you.

Let me go!

- Behave yourself. - Let me go now!

Let me go!

Stay still.

Why are you arresting me, Your Highness?

You have no reason for this!

I'm sure you know why I'm arresting you.

My father is Marquis Zhong Yi.

And I'm the Junior Marquis.

Your Highness can't arrest me!

Preposterous!

Gu Qishan, you're truly audacious.

The father of the person standing in front of you is the current emperor.

The father of the person standing in front of you is the current emperor.

His Highness is arresting you for sure.

Fine, His Highness can arrest me. But who are you?

Fine, His Highness can arrest me. But who are you?

Why are you so bold to hit me?

- Let me go! - Stay still!

We arrest you because you took the lead to cheat and publicly insulted other scholars.

We arrest you because you took the lead to cheat and publicly insulted other scholars.

Who would not like to beat you up?

Am I right, everyone?

Beat him!

- Yes! - Beat him!

Beat him!

This is what you get for being arrogant.

Junor Marquis, why aren't you running?

Ren Anle, come and help me!

But Junor Marquis, so many people are there that I can't save you. I wish you luck on your own.

But Junor Marquis, so many people are there that I can't save you. I wish you luck on your own.

But Junor Marquis, so many people are there that I can't save you. I wish you luck on your own.

Stop beating me!

Do you want to join them?

Your Highness, just look at this remarkable chemistry.

You and Sister Anle are surely a perfect pair...

A perfect pair of what?

A perfect pair of...

Partners.

You ought to be beaten, too.

Come on, you do it.

Here we're beating you, arrogant man.

Call for help, then.

Don't go too far.

Don't kill him.

All right.

I'll make sure to control myself.

All right, I'll hold myself. There you go.

There you go. Take this!

There you go. Take this!

Oh, not too hard. That's Junior Marquis.

Oh, not too hard. That's Junior Marquis.

[Qinglong Pavilion]

- Why is he being flogged? - Official Huang.

- Why is he being flogged? - Official Huang.

Who can endure such punishment?

Stop the flogging.

He's a good official. Stop flogging him.

No one has struck the Qinglong Bell for decades.

No one has struck the Qinglong Bell for decades.

Official Huang Pu is willing to be flogged 30 times and put his career at stake to ring the bell.

Official Huang Pu is willing to be flogged 30 times and put his career at stake to ring the bell.

Official Huang Pu is willing to be flogged 30 times and put his career at stake to ring the bell.

Surely, this injustice runs deep.

Surely, this injustice runs deep.

Your Majesty.

Your Majesty!

Official Huang Pu, Vice Minister of the Court of Judicial Review,

led dozens of his colleagues to ring the Qinglong Bell,

earnestly request Your Majesty's decree to thoroughly investigate the cheating case!

earnestly request Your Majesty's decree to thoroughly investigate the cheating case!

[Marquis Zhong Yi Residence]

Where's Pei Zhan?

Seeing His Majesty with a memorial.

But now, officials of the Court of Judicial Review struck the Qinglong Bell.

But now, officials of the Court of Judicial Review struck the Qinglong Bell.

We can no longer keep this matter a secret.

Ren Anle didn't come with good intentions!

I didn't expect this mere pirate dared to offend you, Marquis Zhong Yi,

I didn't expect this mere pirate dared to offend you, Marquis Zhong Yi,

I didn't expect this mere pirate dared to offend you, Marquis Zhong Yi,

just to have an affair with the Crown Prince.

I was too careless this time.

Li You. Prepare the carriage.

Li You. Prepare the carriage.

Send His Lordship to see His Majesty in person.

Yes.

There's no time to waste.

You must see His Majesty now and seek forgiveness in person.

You must see His Majesty now and seek forgiveness in person.

[Perspicacious And Impartial In Judgment]

[Guilty Official Li Chong'en]

- Your Highness. - Your Highness.

Your Highness, Official Ren, you two will handle the trial.

I'll only determine the punishment.

The chief judge for today's trial would naturally be His Highness.

The chief judge for today's trial would naturally be His Highness.

And I... I'm only an assistant.

Your Highness, this way, please.

Official Luo, this way.

Bring him here!

Bring him here!

Just you wait.

When I get out of here, I'm going to get you for this.

When I get out of here, I'm going to get you for this.

- Greetings, Your Highness. - Greetings, Your Highness.

Please rise.

- Thank you, Your Highness. - Thank you, Your Highness.

Offender, get on your knees.

Your Highness, how come they don't have to kneel?

They're nobodies and I'm the Junior Marquis.

How can you interrogate me like a prisoner?

Junor Marquis.

Junor Marquis, His Highness is the judge for today's trial.

Junor Marquis, His Highness is the judge for today's trial.

My words hold little influence.

You'll have to endure this for now.

Your Highness, what's the purpose of bringing me here?

Your Highness, what's the purpose of bringing me here?

Gu Qishan, Official Huang Pu accused you of leaking the examination question.

Gu Qishan, Official Huang Pu accused you of leaking the examination question.

Do you acknowledge your wrongdoing?

My father is the honorable Marquis Zhong Yi.

Whether I participate in the Imperial Civil Examination or not, my family's influence can make me an official.

Whether I participate in the Imperial Civil Examination or not, my family's influence can make me an official.

Why would I resort to cheating?

Only those lowly commoners care about this insignificant examination.

Only those lowly commoners care about this insignificant examination.

How dare he speaks that way!

Gu Qishan has such audacity.

He completely disregards the importance of the Imperial Civil Examination.

That's right.

What he said is true, though.

The legitimate sons of noble families like him can rely on their family connections to secure official positions.

The legitimate sons of noble families like him can rely on their family connections to secure official positions.

He's right, Your Highness.

He's the son of Marquis Zhong Yi.

Without the examination, he could still become an official. Why would he need to cheat?

Without the examination, he could still become an official. Why would he need to cheat?

That's true.

Come back here.

Sorry, Junor Marquis, I have to go.

Go.

Speaking of which, your relationship with His Highness is close.

Speaking of which, your relationship with His Highness is close.

Even without the Imperial Civil Examination, you can still secure a decent position, right?

Even without the Imperial Civil Examination, you can still secure a decent position, right?

That's right.

I'm talented and capable enough.

I don't need to rely on flattery or connections.

Official Huang, do you have any proof of your accusation?

Official Huang, do you have any proof of your accusation?

Your Highness,

this is a testimony from Wu Yue, Gu Qishan's close friend.

this is a testimony from Wu Yue, Gu Qishan's close friend.

Wu Yue?

How's that possible?

- Isn't he already dead? - Show it to me.

You are sure well-informed.

Wu Yue died in prison last night. And his death was kept secret.

Wu Yue died in prison last night. And his death was kept secret.

Yet, you knew about it immediately.

Wu Yue was my good friend.

When he was locked in prison, I naturally cared about his well-being.

When he was locked in prison, I naturally cared about his well-being.

But look at you from the Court of Judicial Review.

You presented a confession from a dead man.

Who knows if it's real?

But it is real.

Your Highness, take a look.

It's indeed Wu Yue's testimony.

Well, this is strange. [Testimony]

Since Wu Yue died, how did Official Huang extract information from a dead man?

Since Wu Yue died, how did Official Huang extract information from a dead man?

Since Wu Yue died, how did Official Huang extract information from a dead man?

If his confession is not convincing enough,

I request you, everyone here,

to listen to him personally.

What do you say?

Bring it on.

Your Highness, please allow Wu Yue to testify in court.

Your Highness, please allow Wu Yue to testify in court.

Summon Wu Yue, the witness.

[Imperial Supremacy Hall]

Marquis, why are you here now?

His Majesty is still angry.

Eunuch Zhao, please pass a message to His Majesty.

The Crown Prince is interrogating my son.

Ask His Majesty to think in my shoes.

Would he not care for his son, too?

Marquis, I dare not deliver this message for you.

Then I shall kneel here until His Majesty sees me.

What's the point of this?

You...

Come on, Marquis.

Ghost! It's a ghost!

Ghost!

I'm Wu Yue. Greetings, Your Highness.

Junor Marquis, you didn't kill him.

Why are you so scared?

So, it is you, Wu Yue.

You're supposed to be dead!

Please seek the truth, Your Highness.

I've been wrongfully accused.

Junor Marquis, I truly didn't expect that you would try to kill me.

Junor Marquis, I truly didn't expect that you would try to kill me.

Fellow officials, the real culprit who leaked the question is the son of Marquis Zhong Yi, Gu Qishan!

Fellow officials, the real culprit who leaked the question is the son of Marquis Zhong Yi, Gu Qishan!

Fellow officials, the real culprit who leaked the question is the son of Marquis Zhong Yi, Gu Qishan!

It wasn't me!

Your Highness! Official Ren! It wasn't me!

Your Highness! Official Ren! It wasn't me!

You're spouting nonsense!

I considered you my best friend and gave you so many benefits!

I considered you my best friend and gave you so many benefits!

How dare you frame me!

Gu Qishan hired someone to kill me!

But you're not dead.

Official Ren, I didn't do that.

The testimonial evidence is confirmed.

Let's see how Junior Marquis Gu can get out of this.

A dead man came back to life.

Sister Anle's arrangement is indeed a spectacle.

Of course.

Your Highness, Gu Qishan somehow obtained the answers from the examiners.

Your Highness, Gu Qishan somehow obtained the answers from the examiners.

Gu Qishan somehow obtained the answers from the examiners.

But he was too ostentatious, always boasting he'd be the first place.

But he was too ostentatious, always boasting he'd be the first place.

Someone provoked him.

So, when he was drunk, he gave the answers to those profligates.

Your Highness, I didn't do that. He's trying to frame me!

Your Highness, I didn't do that. He's trying to frame me!

Mere words are not evidence.

Who knows if you made it up?

He used to be worthless, but that doesn't mean he can't strive and progress.

He used to be worthless, but that doesn't mean he can't strive and progress.

Can't he make a remarkable accomplishment in the examination?

That's right.

Well, I used to be a pirate. Do you believe it?

Well, I used to be a pirate. Do you believe it?

Ren Anle.

Gu Qishan, you insist that you didn't cheat.

Gu Qishan, you insist that you didn't cheat.

I'm sure you can state your answers in the examination.

Present the examination paper.

Junor Marquis, here comes your chance.

His Highness specifically found your examination paper from the stack of examination papers.

His Highness specifically found your examination paper from the stack of examination papers.

All you need to do now is repeat what you wrote in this examination paper.

All you need to do now is repeat what you wrote in this examination paper.

His Highness will absolve you right here.

And, he'll personally send you back home and apologize to your father.

And, he'll personally send you back home and apologize to your father.

How about that?

Your Highness, did I say that correctly?

Yes.

Marquis, His Majesty requests your presence.

Greetings, Your Majesty.

Yunnian, look at the building I'm working on.

Yunnian, look at the building I'm working on.

What do you think?

This beam is way too long.

This beam is way too long.

In this case, there will be hidden dangers in the building.

With one slight mishap, it'll end up like this.

With one slight mishap, it'll end up like this.

For everything,

there's always a rule.

No one should go too far.

Yunnian, am I right?

Yunnian, am I right?

Thank you for your guidance, Your Majesty.

Yunnian, get up.

Yunnian, get up.

Your Majesty.

Your son's case has not yet been determined.

Your son's case has not yet been determined.

The Three Monitoring Offices are handling it.

I believe the Crown Prince will handle it impartially.

I believe the Crown Prince will handle it impartially.

He won't wrong your son.

And you know,

the Crown Prince is the most upright and fair.

Once there is an outcome, I'll make the final decision.

Once there is an outcome, I'll make the final decision.

Even if you don't trust the Crown Prince, will you not trust me?

Even if you don't trust the Crown Prince, will you not trust me?

I'll leave it to Your Majesty to decide.

Your Highness, I was too nervous during the examination. I don't remember what I wrote.

Your Highness, I was too nervous during the examination. I don't remember what I wrote.

I wrote everything casually.

Uh...

It doesn't matter.

It's understandable.

It's normal for him not to remember what he wrote.

After all, the question is quite difficult.

That's right.

Something about "The Way of the Common People"?

I don't even know what that means.

That's right. I pondered this question for a long time. I didn't know what to write.

That's right. I pondered this question for a long time. I didn't know what to write.

Gu Qishan!

Nothing in this examination was about "The Way of the Common People"!

You can't remember what you wrote, fine.

But you don't even know the question itself!

How dare you claim you wrote it by yourself!

Ren Anle!

How dare you trick me!

Do I need you to teach me how to run a trial?

Gu Qishan, do you admit cheating in the examination?

So what if I admit it?

And what if I don't?

I gave the paper to Wu Yue, so what?

I'm the legitimate son of Marquis Zhong Yi and this is a mere cheating case.

I'm the legitimate son of Marquis Zhong Yi and this is a mere cheating case.

Punish me as you wish!

Gu Qishan, did you just say it was you who gave Wu Yue the paper?

Gu Qishan, did you just say it was you who gave Wu Yue the paper?

Gu Qishan, did you just say it was you who gave Wu Yue the paper?

Yes, I leaked the examination question. So what?

Fine.

Since you've already confessed, let's uncover more truth, [Guilty Official Li Chong'en]

Since you've already confessed, let's uncover more truth, [Guilty Official Li Chong'en]

explain the chief examiner's death.

It seems to contradict his suicidal letter.

Young Lady patted the gavel really aloud.

She must have been desperate to do that.

Pretending to flatter Gu Qishan is quite a mental challenge.

Pretending to flatter Gu Qishan is quite a mental challenge.

I can't do that.

That's why His Highness always instructs me.

Who just said he was capable enough?

That depends on whom I'm compared to.

To His Highness and Sister Anle, I can't compare.

But to you, I think I...

But to you, I think I...

I didn't kill him.

Enough! The evidence is conclusive!

Hereby, I announce the offender, Gu Qishan,

cheated in the examination, leaked the question, got his mentor killed and tried to murder Wu Yue.

- He... - Official Luo,

Our scholars have studied hard for years and taken many examinations before the Imperial Civil Examination.

Our scholars have studied hard for years and taken many examinations before the Imperial Civil Examination.

Yet, it's nothing in your eyes.

What do you think our Imperial Civil Examination is?

What do you think it is?

Your Highness, tell him what it is.

The Imperial Civil Examination is the fundamental basis for selecting talents in our country.

When it's a mess, so will our state.

Without the Imperial Civil Examination, we couldn't get talents or soothe our people.

Then how could we have decades of peace?

Great point.

Understood?

Yes, yes.

Look at the officials right here.

Which one of them didn't study hard for decades before they could be an official?

If...

If they didn't experience it themselves, why would they risk their future for the truth of a mere case?

That's a great relief.

That's right.

I heard from Sister Anle that this case was done in three steps.

She lured Gu Qishan, pretended to help him, and then made him confess.

She lured Gu Qishan, pretended to help him, and then made him confess.

I understand the last two.

But what does the first step mean?

She managed to lure Gu Qishan, based on creating something out of nothing.

The case is true, but the evidence is forged.

Did you also doubt the timing and location of the cheat sheets were really weird

as if they were fabricated, right?

- Yes, I did. - The truth is...

Oh, I see.

Wait.

Then when His Highness is with Sister Anle, wouldn't he be in danger?

[Court of Judicial Review]

Your Highness, are you satisfied with my performance just now?

Not too bad.

Does that mean you approve of me?

Then can I get a higher position?

Ren Anle, you made contributions to solving the cheating case.

Ren Anle, you made contributions to solving the cheating case.

Pei Zhan will be dismissed.

You are about to take his place and be promoted to the third rank.

I secured a position in the Imperial Court and I traveled a long way to see you.

You're heroic and intelligent.

Only shallow people would think you're a true fool.

Official Luo.

His Highness played along with me.

Does it mean he considers me a close friend?

Official Ren.

I also played along with you.

Guess.

Am I considering you a close friend?

You have a rather cold temperament.

When you cooperated with me, you naturally considered me close.

By me, Ren Anle!

Are you leaving just like that?

No celebration feast?

How could you get along with someone like him?

You both behave improperly.

Official Luo was different from the start.

When Ziyuan came to the capital, Luo Mingxi was her guard.

Ren Anle...

Your Highness, the carriage is ready.

Official Huang sure can't read the room.

How annoying!

About her or me?

I was just surprised.

Ren Anle met you for the first time, but she gained your approval.

Why don't you just get to the point?

Please help me investigate Ren Anle.

Are you saying... you don't believe what she wants is to be the Crown Princess?

Are you referring to our marriage?

I know you're hiding something from me.

Do you mean you want me to be honest with you?

Since I've chosen to trust you, I hope you can trust me too.

All I think about now is how to be the Crown Princess.

By then, you will understand my heart.

[Marquis Zhong Yi Residence]

Marquis.

Marquis, what did His Majesty say?

His Majesty said it'd be handled fairly.

His Majesty said it'd be handled fairly.

I begged and begged. But our son would be exiled.

So, he's just ruined, right?

Marquis.

Will we just lose Qishan?

What about Ren Anle?

She...

She solved a major case.

Naturally, she gained His Majesty's favor.

She used my son as a stepping stone.

An esteemed marquis like me was fooled by a female pirate!

Gentlemen, today, I solved a big cheating case.

So my position has risen from here to here. [Nobody. Lady of Decorous Service]

Your Highness, I'm so happy today.

Because you had a chance to escape, but you stayed behind and played along with me.

Ren Anle,

I didn't embarrass you because you solved a major case and earned a reputation,

Your Highness!

The imperial decree arrived at your residence.

Please return as soon as possible.

Don't forget about my celebration feast!

[Imperial Supremacy Hall]

Your Majesty, your tea.

Your Highness, please.

Your Majesty,

I heard you sentenced Gu Qishan to exile.

I heard you sentenced Gu Qishan to exile.

But according to the law, he deserves to be executed.

But according to the law, he deserves to be executed.

Sit.

Have some tea first.

Crown Prince, can you drink the tea now?

If you drink it hastily, you'll scald yourself.

Let it cool down first.

No rush.

Your Majesty, do you mean Marquis Zhong Yi?

Your Majesty, do you mean Marquis Zhong Yi?

He holds strong military power and has occupied Jiangnan for many years.

He holds strong military power and has occupied Jiangnan for many years.

You and Ren Anle just took over his Court of Judicial Review.

And now you want to kill his son.

You should know when a dog gets desperate, it'll bite its master.

You should know when a dog gets desperate, it'll bite its master.

Come on, son.

You're just too hasty.

But Ren Anle assistance for you has unexpected effects.

But Ren Anle assistance for you has unexpected effects.

I think having her by your side is a good thing.

One should patiently wait for the right time to take action.

One should patiently wait for the right time to take action.

Thank you for your guidance, Your Majesty.

You have achieved a great victory.

I should congratulate you.

But what defines true victory?

Gu Qishan will be exiled instead.

Several lives were lost, officials protested with their lives, and thousands of exam candidates had hot tears.

Several lives were lost, officials protested with their lives, and thousands of exam candidates had hot tears.

But nothing outweighed the sentimental emperor.

You should know Han Zhongyuan is suspicious.

In his eyes, a compliant, treacherous minister matters more than a loyal minister.

By the way,

your old friend,

Princess Anning, who guards the northwest, will be arriving in the capital in a few days.

Princess Anning, who guards the northwest, will be arriving in the capital in a few days.

The hatred between the Han family and my family has nothing to do with her.

But anyway, she's one of the Han family.

But anyway, she's one of the Han family.

Eventually, she'll be aware of your plans.

I understand.

The cheating case was solved too smoothly.

Han Ye began to suspect you.

That's why he assigned me to investigate you.

I asked to marry him with my 30,000 naval forces.

If Han Ye, the Crown Prince, believed it so easily,

If Han Ye, the Crown Prince, believed it so easily,

he would be no different from the onlookers in this tea house.

But you blew up your cover in front of Marquis Zhong Yi.

It'll make the situation somewhat tricky.

Don't worry, I've prepared in advance.

[Marquis Zhong Yi Residence]

[Marquis Zhong Yi]

Yuanqin, you should focus when playing weiqi.

Too bad. I was about to win.

My Lady.

Don't worry. They'll be taken care of.

How dare you assassinate us with such poor martial arts?

How dare you assassinate us with such poor martial arts?

Yuanshu, end it quickly.

All right.

Watch your left.

Are you all right? Are you hurt?

I...

I'm fine.

Sister Anle, are you hurt?

They're clearly trying to kill me.

But no one cares about me.

That's not true. His Highness cares about you.

See? He even sent his guards to protect you.

Yuanshu, stop.

He's the Crown Prince's guard.

He's on our side. That's great!

What's wrong with Yuanshu?

Why is she fighting with our own men?

She gets excited when she fights someone strong.

Again. If I hadn't spoken just now, I could have subdued you in one move!

Again. If I hadn't spoken just now, I could have subdued you in one move!

Don't leave!

"One should patiently wait for the right time to take action."

His Majesty is right.

If we cannot nip problems in the bud, we shouldn't act recklessly.

Even so, I'm afraid we'll have to wait for too long.

His Majesty's decision has disappointed me to some extent.

By the way,

how's your investigation on Ren Anle?

She appears to be carefree, but she's profound inside.

She commands 30,000 naval forces, maintaining peace in one region.

She has too much time on her hands.

Or she probably has some ideas on her mind.

Or she probably has some ideas on her mind.

She aspires to serve our country.

So, to seek a foothold in the capital, she wants to...

So, to seek a foothold in the capital, she wants to...

Now that you understand, Your Highness, why not rise with the occasion?

Your Highness, Yuanshu and Yuanqin are here.
