that you have at your disposal.

Now, granted, they are pawns, so, oftentimes, you're going to find yourself sacrificing them.

However, one very interesting technique about them is that if you get a pawn to the other side of the board,

you can decide for it to be any other type of piece you want it to be.

It doesn't matter which piece?

It doesn't, but I typically recommend you make it your queen.

And it is if you've already lost your queen, because here's the thing about your queen,

your queen has virtually no limits.

She can go anywhere on the board in any which direction.

Yeah. So...

So, what if you lose your queen?

Then, you lose your queen. Hopefully, you can get a pawn on the other side of the board.

So, the goal is to get your pawn to the other side of the board?

No. The goal is to get the king in checkmate.

Checkmate is when you have your king in a certain spot where any move it makes will face certain death from the other player.

Okay... so... what does that even mean?

Does that mean the other player loses? Or wins?

If you're in checkmate, you lose.

Don't worry. We're gonna go over each piece, piece by piece.

It doesn't have to be complicated. You don't have to get overwhelmed.

Man, this is kind of difficult. Right?

Yeah, but I'm so excited to learn.

I mean... Ladies, it's not that complicated.

You know, virtually all the pieces are valuable.

The pawns are valuable. The king, the queen. They're all important for you.

So, I mean, you just want to know how they move.

And that's the most important thing, so that you know how to play.

Okay. So, what... tell me more about the king. How... you said, is he more important or less important than the other players?

Well, that's just the goal of the game. That's just the rules.

You know, you lose. If you can't move your king, you lose.

Because the rook can go straight forward at any distance, side to side in distance.
