i'll be in soon i need to file it in the

parlor yes mom

hello lenny you look pretty the dear

mary ellen

i don't think so not in this old thing

you always look pretty i and you're full

of old flannel

[Music]

oh well

that's another one over hey thank god i

don't think i'm cut out for the mill

i reckon mr mulcaster things to see him

well why what makes you say that

he told me as much last week he said he

didn't think my heart was in it

well i think perhaps he's right

we all know where your heart is

[Music]

do you see him staring

how rude

i must go

damn it

soundspace is too fast for you are very

funny

another word

these are excellent love you're a talent

there's no doubt about that and i don't

like to see talent go to waste

no then i've been told to a friend of

mine in newcastle he knows all about the

arts

and um there's a scholarship scheme

scholarship hi

they want to pay for young artists to go

to art school now there's three places

on offer

you're an artist lad mr mcfirst and his

friends will be very impressed with this

uh actually we want to see you next week

next week this could be the chance of a

lifetime

hi sir and if i may suggest um

have you any money saved up a little bit

sir

well maybe a change of clothes and shoes

could be a good idea i mean nothing too

elaborate you know but something a

little bit

different i mean no offense you do want

to start

i do sir i understand perfectly

and thanks

and roddy when you get there don't be

frightened to speak your mind

they might be from newcastle but they're

only human beings

i kind of believe that you go to art

school don't sound so surprised

what ah you know what i mean i thought

you'd be here for life like me

i probably will be not getting my hopes

up that must be a fair chance for me to

give you the day off

he reckons the place won't drop down

without me i'd be right there probably

even run better

lately see you saturday then you decide

to come back

oh this is wonderful news

lad a scholarship that's not set but

it's a chance

ah a good chance at all lad kid

would it be all right if i took some

money of course

you hardly touch the money you got for

your dad's house

go on you know what it is it's just that

mr mulcaster thinks i should

buy some new clothes they're probably

right

a couple of sovereigns should do it

what if he takes you on what will you do

good a new castle i suppose is that what

you want

i think so you don't answer sure lad

it's just that uh i've got my eye on a

girl

oh or tell me something i don't know

what you can't that nobody knows i don't

even know myself

that's not mary ellen then mary ellen

good god kid mary ellen she's like a

sister

oh she's no sister lad i'll tell you

that

well who is this last then i know it

sounds daft but

i've no idea i only know she's the most

beautiful girl i've ever clapped eyes on

and she's breathing i can tell breathing

what is that what you want your new

clothes for what do you mean by that

lad it's not what's on the outside that

counts

in here i'm uh not hungry

[Music]

so

[Music]

bottom of things hey you would wouldn't

you

miss marianne oh you

i'm all right i found my own way i do

know what you know

do you think anything will come of

roddy's visit to newcastle i don't know

and i don't

care you don't care

that's it isn't it that's the bottom of

it

roddy all your life all you've ever

wanted is to possess

roddy mind body and soul well he gone

the wrong way about it

always lashing him with that tug of

yours hanging on his court tails

i had her

but not now i bet this this morning

will i cut your shive hi all right

i suppose you're going to kids later

will he be there roddy

by the way of trail after him

we were brought up together like brother

and sister be damned that for a tale

he's a man and you're ready for marrying

i'll marry who i think fit

when i think fit and i'll say this

it'll be a sorry day for you when i do

marry because i won't be starting me

life in this place

all right

do they like your drawings i think so

they said that let us know next week if

they're going to make me an offer

what is the offer exactly two years

learning art in newcastle

or london and would you go hi of course

i'd go

you wouldn't mind leaving oh in a way

i mean i missed kid of course some

things i wouldn't miss

the middle for one and me for another i

suppose won't be daft

i'm not daft i'm not blind either

you've got somebody else haven't you i

never had anybody in the first place

get it into your head maryam i'm fond of

you but not in that way

don't look like that there's nobody i

like better but

well roddy gave it to us straight told

me exactly what he thought about me

did he tell you about her no

who is she is dan bannerman's daughter

and he'd no more let her marry roddy

greenbank

than the devil himself doesn't matter

he doesn't love me and he never will

well he's going away love and to me

it's like losing a son

and to you it's losing the man you've

loved all your life

[Music]

oh i'm sorry about that i really

am love

you all right fine why should i be

oh maybe you were paining for martha

going into hexamora if you fancy your

right uh why not it's going anyway

i found out where she goes on the

saturday i thought it might

a visit huh

i'll meet you back here in about half an

hour

if you're not here i'll wait for you how

was that fair enough

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

all right mr greenbank please

i don't understand what you wanted me

just because i allowed you to speak to

me in newcastle i think you're taking

advantage

of an advantage i thought you might be

interested to know how i got on with my

drawings

oh your drawings my father knows mr

mulcaster

you're a workman at the mill aren't you

well my father is that it your father

has he forbidden you to see me am i

below your station

that's it isn't it leave go of my army

take your hands off my daughter

greenback

if you come near it again i'll skin you

alive

i'll see her when i like you don't

frighten me don't be such an idiot man

you hear me

come on

what are you stupid apart from being

funnerman's daughter she's i'm more

through her than the stuntmail

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

so

[Music]

young greenback is becoming a thorn in

my side i need to deal with them once

and for all

settle up the horses we've got work to

do

release wine now and you're a blasted

fool i'm warning you start anything

again i'll finish it this time i'm not

letting you off again like i did back

there

let me know you're talk you're not

better than that

let's kill royston make it look like

greenback did it

anyway like i said i'm sorry

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

oh

how's hell touch and go i would say

that managed to stop the plane he might

be lucky

oh he took quite a beating a lot of

blowers to the head by the look of it

seems as though they were trying to kill

each other

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

alrighty

[Music]

[Music]

i'd be surprised if he stays alive long

enough to see the justices

what

they're both still alive oh feel him man

you stuck a knife in royston's ribs i

know

but he's not dead that's for sure

not yet anyway oh god i should have done

it

what about the other one in jail

charged with attempted murder it seems

and in a bad way

and himself too upset but both our shoes

[Applause]

[Music]

do it do it

from

my god that's all we need what is it mud

you do what about your dog

where am i excellent jail

but kid what is he kid

and those kids and we die

all right

you're a silly girl and i'm grateful

enough

oh mrs davison i'm not and i work late

tonight and get up an hour earlier

tomorrow

do you think we can order the cows to

change their time a milk then

i'm sorry but i've got to go and see him

why are you wasting your time

you're taking advantage mistress i'm

ever so grateful for all you've done for

me

but he's in jail and he's got nobody

kate's not well enough to go and see him

and

she's dying to know what they're gonna

do everybody knows fine well what

they'll do to him

they'll likely hang him oh no

he's got too big for his boots and

drinking and

fighting he's never been drunk

girl i don't like to be harshly here but

it worries me to see you so concerned

about rodney greenback

when our lenny would give his eyeballs

why can you not like him mrs davis now

do i think the world are lenny

he's good and kind but ah

it's but you don't like him that way do

you

our lenny's been knocking on for you

ever since you first came into this

house

i know i saved myself you couldn't get

better

oh you're a fool do you know that you're

a fool

yes mistress oh go on

get yourself out of my sight thanks

mistress

i'm sorry miss but there's no visitors

allowed except from visiting

but this is the only day i can come to

mrs gave us time off

it's the rules

[Music]

just wait here i'll see what i can do

two minutes

[Music]

years ago everything

the quarry the grave

it's all looked stupid it's all there

if i close

is your face

no man in the grave

[Music]

i mean uh

the man murdered him

they threw him over a cliff who did

roddy

who did who threw you down over a cliff

parliament mr baltimore of brooklyn's

farm

why don bonamon and his woman dealer

but he's respected it's been life

do you understand it's me life yes i

know

get him to bring in the sheriff and dig

near the place

where the fall took a piece of the path

to the top of the quarry

[Music]

just there i knew it

all right all right

but it's an awful big accusation to me

that's why butterman tried to do me and

try to make her up to hull

ask god he don't know

have you seen him no

then go to him tell him i never did for

him

oh my god i'll tell you i haven't gone

mad

i'm not dreaming

they murdered me darn i really

[Music]

picked one in the grave somehow

[Music]

mr oysten here's a visitor for you

hello mary ellen

didn't expect to see you i've been to

see roddy

he wants you to know that he didn't stop

i know

we were jumped i only wish to believe me

who is he not good

listen something to tell you

he's remembered he's remembered what

happened

there wasn't a landslide the night his

daughter died

he saw a man in a grave two men were

burying a man in a grave

and they hit his darn threw roddy over a

cliff

and he's remembered who they were my god

i'll listen he says it was mr bannerman

and feeler is woodman he wants me to go

to mr mulcaster and from to get the

sheriff

who do you think they were burying

miriam i don't know he didn't see

me disappeared around that time

they thought he'd skipped off with the

money

[Music]

i never believed it never

god almighty if i could prove them wrong

do what what he said mary ellen

but take care banan's in him in the

county

and you know them up top they all stick

together

for this it's all right

i'm only sorry i didn't bring you

anything marielle

what you brought me is gold dust

[Music]

go on travel safely

[Music]

toro

[Music]

you really want me to go to the justices

yes sir but i can't

i mean rodney's mine might have been

affected after that beating he took

believe me please

he's in his right mind he is i've told

you he saw them burying a man in a grave

he watched them kill his dog

well leave it with me i want to think

about it there's no time to think about

it sir

if you won't go i'll have to me self he

could be sentenced and dispatched any

place

it's not far sir we could play there in

a few minutes

all right i'll try

where is the girl i expected to be back

by four

this maybe he's missed the carrier car

now

well she's trying my appearance i can

tell you

all i must need to do is to dig up a

body don't you think it's a little

convenient that green bank's memory has

recovered after all these years

at the very time he's in jail charged

with attempted murder you don't know him

sir

roddy wouldn't lie

i'm sorry i can't go out on a limb here

there's simply no

evidence to justify it sir please i'm

begging you

look i know how difficult this must be

for your sheriff but the girl's right

i've known this lad for years

he's as honest as the day is long

look at it this way if the body is there

we'll know the light's telling the truth

and if it's not well bannermen have been

on the wiser

what do you got to lose

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

thanks mrs davison i'm ever so grateful

[Music]

and i don't need you to venture an

opinion

[Music]

it's all changed come on you must have

some idea

surely

will i be able to speak to him soon i'm

afraid not

it was all a long time ago it must be

somewhere here

[Music]

any look not a thing

i've been digging all day and nothing

and how's roddy he looks terrible kate

they won't even let me speak to him

come here

it's not less wish i wish that all those

years ago i'd said something to someone

about bannon

i've always felt deep down that he had

something to do with roddy's dar's death

so let's hope they find what we're

looking for

well well it's nice of you to turn up

i have to go mrs davison

you've stirred up a right hornet's nest

girl off the countryside digging that

quarry for a buddy nobody can find

and all because that lad thinks he

remembers what he didn't say

he did see oh don't be stupid

it's nearly 12 yes since it happened if

it did

anyway everybody knows it was gabriel

roy's doing a round up with it

perhaps he didn't run off how's all was

said

how roddy you've had too many men in

your life girl but i had nailed bradley

she wasn't flighty

no but she flighted off didn't she

otherwise you wouldn't have taken me on

i'm sorry mrs davis and i should never

have spoken like that

but i'm all upset you're not going to

believe this joe

but she'd cheat me mary ellen cheat me

what can i believe that wife

she thinks highly of you don't you marry

ellen yes master

yes i do she's gone clean upsided

all over this roddy green bank imagining

bodies

well it's natural she's trying to save

him from transportation ted yara was

telling me last night

they sent 10 times as many men to botany

bay as we sell sheep to market

oh please mr davidson don't say that

no then no then don't start no fin fits

in this house

well since you've been gone all day you

better get started on them pounds

they're not gonna scour themselves you

know

calm down thriller but what if they find

a body

the ward and what if they do there's

nothing linked to us

but greenback must have his memory back

or why would they be digging

what if he remembers us who's the

sheriff gonna believe

me or some young lad that's just tried

to murder his best friend

mr oysten i've heard some news of your

friend roddy

they've taken him back to langley

something to do with digging for a body

who told you this i have a friend at the

prison foam room what are you doing

can you get me my clothes please mr

royston don't be foolish

i need my clothes see sense man you

can't go anywhere the state you're in

i have to go it's me dar that digging

for

girl you're no use to anybody in this

state

the sooner they get him back into jail

they're better maybe then you'll see

some

sense he won't be going back to jail not

when they find the body

there is no body accept it

i think your precious roddy's been

spinning you all the line

you see if i'm not right

[Music]

foreign

[Music]

you're looking in the wrong place you

saw the lad over there

which means they must have buried the

body

over there

[Music]

we found something over here

[Music]

oh

[Music]

you proved the first part of your story

bank

let's see what mr bannerman has to say

release him

mary ellen you were right they found it

what the body

found gabriel royston's body oh thank

god

[Music]

[Music]

going somewhere pat somewhere well away

from here hi mr bannerman

and if you've any sense you'll be doing

the same what's the matter with you

they they found the body and i've no

intention of ending up at the wrong end

of a rope

don't think you can run out on me feeler

stay here

i'll deal with this

good day gentlemen can i help mr barron

i need to ask you a few questions

all right what about

what's he doing here this young man is

accusing you of the murder of his father

peter greenback murder mr craig this is

just

spite that loud made improper advances

to my daughter and i warned him off we

also want to speak to you about the

murder of gabriel royston

this gentleman's father mr craig

i think you know my standing in the

community you have a woodman i believe

patrick feeler hi is he here

you don't think he's got anything to do

with this do you i'm not sure mr

bannerman

but i intend to ask him what's going on

mother

where's the sheriff here with roddy

greenbank i don't know my dear

patrick filam hi you recall this man

he was there when he killed my father

freely not being accused of anything man

i'm not

i'm afraid you are you'll be charged as

an accessory to the murder of gabriel

royston

and the theft of 300 sovereigns from

langley works tell them will you

i didn't do it please

hold him all day aye i'll watch him

watch him what's going on hold him

eyes condom dear god it's a seizure

bet your dog to someone quickly hold his

head martha

go for the doctor hi sheriff

[Music]

will he be all right keep his head still

get his head still

[Music]

he won't get far i'll find him

if i don't find him first scum you know

that

you and your kind of scum

[Music]

uh

[Music]

you
