Seth Adams doesn't often
make promises he can't keep,

but the train was
way behind schedule,

and we both knew there would
be trouble in the mountains

if we didn't make
a beeline west.

That's why the Major sent me
with the Ramsey party.

The Ramseys were headed
for the Iron River Valley...

That's about three days' ride
north of the trail.

You had to feel sorry for
the folks from the deep South...

In those years
right after the war,

there wasn't much left for them
back home but trouble.

But ahead of them was a town
named Bitter Springs.

I'd been there before,
and I couldn't help wishing

the Ramsey party would pick
some other place to homestead.

The Ramseys didn't know it,

but they didn't leave their
troubles behind in Georgia.

They brought them along

riding a sorry old mule
named Mr. Christopher...

A pack of trouble
in a small boy.

And I was dreading the moment

that we ride into
Bitter Springs.

if we hurry we can make the
Iron River Valley before sundown.

After that he only lived for one
thing till the whole thing was over,

so he could get back
to his wife and son.

But he never made it. Why not?

They were both killed
during the siege of Atlanta.

That near killed him.

About a week after that he
took a mini-ball in the arm,

paralyzed it for life.

He can't use that arm,
but it hurts him all the time.

Everybody suffered in the war.

The town council's
meeting right now.

They're gonna give Ben the authority
he needs and the men he wants

to take that boy and run
your people out of the valley.

Well, you tell the town council
that the Ramseys aren't running.

And neither am I.

I figured you'd say that.
