[Love and Sword]

Adapted from Shen Cang Mei's novel Sleeping Beside Yan Shao

[Episode 1]

Yan Shao

Who dares to enter Ghost Valley Sect alone? Are you not afraid of death?

I am. Would you all be willing to spare me a way out?

A way out? Which way are you heading out?

To the Soul Reaping Platform of Ghost Valley Sect.

I heard it's gut-wrenching and heart-piercing, a torment beyond life and death. I'd like to see it for myself.

So, you've come there to rescue someone.

Make it through our Three Souls and Seven Spirits Formation alive, and then we'll talk.

There's no formation in this world that I, Yan Shao, cannot break.

Form the formation!

Repose Gate! [Repose Gate]

Break!

Wound Gate! Break! [Wound Gate]

Shock Gate! Break! [Shock Gate]

Sealed Gate! Break! [Sealed Gate]

Death Gate! Break! [Death Gate]

Life Gate! [Life Gate]

The formation is broken.

[Yuchi Manor, Rong Shu Kuang]

This is...

The Great Desert? Flying Apsaras? Bandits?

Brutal marauders? What's going on here?

Rong Shu Kuang. I never expected you to survive until today.

No wonder you're Yuchi Manor's top swordsman.

Rong Shu Kuang? Is that me?

My name?

What a shame. Three days and three nights...

No one from Yuchi Manor came to rescue you. Either they fear the Ghost Valley Sect,

or that key is more important than you.

You little wench. You were struck by our leader's Mystic Ice Jade Palm. Your martial arts are gone.

Three days without food, left to wither under the scorching sun... You won't last much longer.

Who are you? Why are you trying to kill me?

Hey, you! Are you playing dumb?

- Or has your brain stopped working? - We are the Four Wandering Masters.

Exactly. The last people you should ever forget. [Green-Robed, Yellow-Robed, Red-Robed]

But there are only three of you.

The last one is here! And he died by your blade.

Rong Shu Kuang! There is no coexistence between us!

Wait... I'm a heroine? Like a powerful warrior?

Then why am I tied up here?

No way. Another one coming to kill me?

Wait.

There can't be two tigers on one mountain. One group can't have two people in red.

A hero saving a damsel in distress?

Hero.

Come save me!

Are you saving me or trying to kill me?

Is this... poisoning?

-Leader, Rong Shu Kuang was taken from Soul Reaping Platform. - Is it someone from Yuchi Manor?

Haven't seen anyone from Yuchi Manor. They don't look familiar.

Go. No matter what, capture them.

Yes!

Thanks for ruining my idea of happiness on such an important day.

There's nothing in this world that I care about anymore!

What happened? The rescue failed?

I said I had nothing left, and God just sent me off?

My life in the modern world wasn't exactly great, but it wasn't that bad...

No... Let me think.

You don't seem like you want to be saved.

Yes. I should just die.

- Ow! - Your fate was never to die.

You were unconscious for a whole day and night. Yet, you still survived.

This isn't a hallucination or a dream.

It must be a parallel world.

In situations like this, I either find a way back

or I accept my fate and move forward.

Another crossroads in life...

What did you say?

Nothing.

May I ask for your esteemed name, hero?

There are always charming young nobles. A place where young men seek romance.

That sounds like a famous title.

No. Just a nobody. Something I made up.

Whether you're famous or not, I wouldn't know.

My surname is Yan. I'm known as Yan Shao in the martial world.

Master Yan Shao.

You don't have any brothers who died by my hand, right?

No.

Then I don't owe you any romantic debts either?

No.

Then why did you save this woman? Why did you save me?

A good deed for the day. Just happened to pass by.

So, many stars.

Hero, do you have a mirror?

A bronze mirror.

Do I look like someone who carries a mirror everywhere?

Then let me borrow your sword.

Grandma's jade...

I remember when the car accident happened, I was holding the jade my grandmother gave me.

Why does his sword also have the exact same jade?

Could this jade be the key that connects two worlds?

Hero. Your sword must have a name, right?

-Xuelang Sword. - Famous?

- Not really. - Who gave it to you?

My master.

A reclusive master. So, what do you plan to do with it?

Looks pretty good. Not bad for ancient attire.

Rong Shu Kuang. Shu Kuang...

I'm not your enemy. You don't have to play dumb with me.

Don't tell me you lost your memory.

Well... What if I said I really don't remember?

Have you even forgotten your own name?

My mind is... empty.

The Mystic Ice Jade Palm. It damages the brain too?

Maybe... you'll remember over time.

Hero.

- Speak. - That ice... palm thing you mentioned.

Could it be fatal? What is Yuchi Manor?

Those three old men in red, green, and yellow said they were exchanging me for some key.

What key?

- Wait... - What do you mean?

People say Yuchi Manor's Rong Shu Kuang has sword skills and courage that rival any man's.

But no one ever said she was shrewd and calculating.

Besides, Rong Shu Kuang is known to be cold and reserved.

Exactly.

This rumor is unreliable, and gossip isn't worth spreading.

I... I nearly died at death's door.

It's normal for my personality to change a little.

You're asking too many questions. Pick the one you want to ask the most.

I'll answer it.

Why did you save me?

[Bounty Order]

A bounty order? 300 gold?

- I'm worth that much? - Stop mumbling. We can't stay here for long.

Let's go.

Wait for me, hero!

We've tracked him from where he switched camel carts, changing directions twice,

but both times led to nothing. I swear I'll break his bones if I catch him.

- That guy isn't ordinary. - What makes you say that?

He planned everything so well. Not just anyone could pull that off.

I've never heard of Yuchi Manor having someone like him before.

Could he be connected to Rong Shu Kuang?

Who cares? Just catch him first.

Half a day's travel from here, we'll reach Immortal Spring.

It's an oasis. Caravans passing by always stop there to rest.

In this desert, as long as you have money, you can buy anything.

There's an oasis, too?

This isn't following the usual script.

I'm not drinking. I'm allergic.

Wait... I'm allergic, but that doesn't mean Rong Shu Kuang is. Might as well test it.

I'll take a sip.

Slow down.

Ancient wine really does taste better than modern ones.

You need to apply medicine to your wound.

Yan Er, Yi Er. [Yan Wu Ying]

Come and have some snacks. [Fang Yi]

Here.

Yi Er.

Eat.

Hey, control yourself.

I know men have certain thoughts.

But if you actually do anything to me, you won't get your bounty.

Turns out this hero is quite the gentleman.

Why does that make me feel like...

What's wrong with me? Why do I feel so hot?

I... Why am I suddenly burning up?

Didn't I get hit with Mystic Ice Jade Palm? Why does it feel like I'm on fire?

Is it the heat from the fire?

You were struck by the Mystic Ice Jade Palm. Medicine and wine help expel the cold from your body.

You know medicine?

I was weak and sickly as a child. A kind physician took care of me.

He taught me a lot. I learned from him.

Hero.

So... How about my martial arts? Can I get them back?

- Maybe. - Who is this Shen Zui Tian?

- Why did he attack me? - He's the leader of Ghost Valley Sect.

A few months ago, a rumor spread across the martial world.

They said the key to the Fuxian treasure was hidden in Yuchi Manor.

Ghost Valley Sect has always coveted the treasure, so they set a trap and captured you,

forcing Yuchi Manor to trade the key for you.

At the time, Young Master Lin Shao Ci was handling affairs elsewhere.

He was too far away to return in time. So, he issued a bounty across the martial world,

offering a reward to any skilled fighter who could rescue you.

A treasure...

- at Yuchi Manor? - I have no idea.

What about Lin Shao Ci? What's my relationship with him?

The Manor Lord once proposed marriage.

But he refused.

So, Lin Shao Ci is actually my destined match?

Why is it suddenly so cold? I was just burning up.

- Now it feels like I'm in an ice cellar. - Let's go.

Wait. Look over there.

Don't get the wrong idea. I'm just too cold.

I need to borrow your warmth for a bit.

So beautiful.

I wish I could take one back.

This world has treasures, heroes, and most importantly, it frees me from my modern-day troubles.

Why not roam the land with my sword, and live out my martial arts dream?

Why is the wind picking up?

Yan Shao! Why is it so windy?

Shut up. Don't speak.

A sandstorm is coming.

This world isn't so fun after all.

Get off the horse.

Yan Shao, what now?

Get down.

Quick.

Don't move. A sandstorm.

Yan Shao, why did you save me?

Because you are Rong Shu Kuang.

Right now, we have no food or water, don't we?

There's an oasis ahead.

I don't see anything.

Are all ancient people farsighted?

This jade... I have a feeling I'll need it sooner or later.

I should find a way to get my hands on it first.

Thinking of taking my sword again?

Just a look. What's the big deal?

Up close, you actually look quite manly.

- What? - I just meant you look manly.

Do you need to look to tell whether I'm a man?

Sister, you're so pretty!

- Thank you. - Sister, where are you from?

From... Somewhere you wouldn't know even if I told you.

The baby turned three months old, cries every night, and has a flushed face. Do you have a cure?

Infants shouldn't be given medicine.

- I have some herbal cakes to cool and detoxify. Take them home for your mother. - Go play.

- The baby will get better naturally. - You're truly a lifesaver in the desert!

This is the finest hide. Please accept it.

-Thank you, Master Healer! - Master Healer?

- Thank you. Master Healer. - If she's that skilled in medicine...

Why would she wander the wild, traveling with merchants?

She must have another identity.

A woman with a story to tell.

True. The martial world is full of hidden stories.

And you?

What's your untold story?

Me?

My brain's frozen right now. Even if I had one, I wouldn't remember.

Tell me, what business thrives here?

Chopped meat tastes better.

- What is this? - This is called "meat stuffed in bread."

What kind of dish is this? Did Yuchi Manor teach you this?

Now you see why I bought all the bread here?

Otherwise, my method would get stolen.

- What happens to my business then? - Business?

Watch this. Roujiamo!

Come and try some roujiamo!

A dish you've never seen or heard of before!

Tender, fragrant, and filled with meat and bread!

-Tasty and convenient! Give it a try! - Never seen this before.

Yeah, the meat does smell pretty good.

-I'll take one. -Sure.

Here you go.

How does she like it? Well?

-This is delicious! Let's buy one. -Everyone, come try it!

This young lady's new creation is the best in the world!

Come, come!

Try it! Here, take it!

- I want one too! - All right.

Here's yours.

- Take it. - It really is tasty!

How long did you think of this?

Uh... just now.

Just now?

I... I'll take one.

What's wrong? What happened to her?

How is she?

Her organs have been damaged by extreme cold. The Mystic Ice Jade Palm.

- Did she offend the Ghost Valley Sect? - That's right.

It was Shen Zui Tian of Ghost Valley Sect who injured her.

The Mystic Ice Jade Palm is no minor technique. How will you counteract it?

A cold-dispelling remedy mixed with Sangluo wine. She's already mostly recovered in the past few days.

Please help dispel the remaining cold energy.

The cold is not severe. I have a secret remedy for it.

But her fainting... It has nothing to do with the cold.

Then what's the cause? I ask for your guidance, Senior.

This girl is very important to me.

No matter the cost, I must save her.

The cold energy has invaded her bloodstream, temporarily suppressing the poison she was afflicted with.

You want to save her, so you're doing everything to dispel the cold.

But you don't realize, the faster the cold is removed, the faster the poison will take effect.

No wonder she shifts between hot and cold abnormally.

Only by identifying the poison she was given can we determine how to neutralize it.

There are only one or two people in the world who can cure this poison. And you are one of them.

You're Tang Wu, most skilled poison master of Tang Clan.

I must say, your reputation precedes you.

What is your identity?

[Tang Wu, He Lian Huan Wu]

My sect leader's hidden weapon.

Rest assured, Senior. I come as a friend, not a foe.

I only wish to save this girl.

It was for the sake of saving her that your sect leader granted me this weapon.

To have connections with the Tang Clan and to know my whereabouts...

Your scheming runs deep.

I see now who you are.

If you wish to suppress the poison in her body, you must activate her meridians.

Guide the heat back to its core.

Use your inner energy to channel through her Jianyu,

Jianzheng points, Shouwuli and Quchi points,

to her Xialian, Yangxi, and Hegu points.

The detoxification energy must flow continuously.

However, the poison being drawn out will transfer to the nearest person beside her.

Sacrificing oneself to save another.

Thus, this method is known as the Poison Extraction Technique.

- How is the poison extraction? - Her breathing is steady now.

Thank you for your guidance, Senior. You saved her life.

Saving one life while harming another. I don't know if it's right or wrong.

But I am willing to bear this burden for her.

I'll take you to the Immortal Spring.

The poison extraction technique is my own creation, known to very few.

But even so, the two of you won't last long.

Are you certain you can find out who poisoned her and what poison was used?

Even without knowing the outcome, you've done so much to save her,

risking your own life. Does she even know?

I just hope she never finds out.
