It just made my heart so happy

I started when I was 11 or 12.

And for me, it was
Mrs. Sarah Haynes,

my chorus teacher,

who I just lost
a couple months ago.

She was battling breast cancer.

My name is Bryson Battle.

I'm 21, and I'm from Harrisburg,
North Carolina.

You're 21?

There are certain times
when the chairs around

where my ear will just go,

okay, like,
I'm listening to pitch

or I'm listening
to technicalities.

I didn't think about that.

I literally just thought about
how moved I was

because you were just singing
from your soul.

And I want to ask, how did you
fall in love with music?

What is your road here?

There has not been a time in
my life where I wasn't singing.

Singing has just always been
my first love.

I always knew that I wanted to
be on stage and be on camera.

But it's been
a very long journey

to just feel comfortable
in my own body.

When I was 16,
I got diagnosed with vitiligo.

And that's where your skin cells
don't produce pigment.

My first instinct was
to cover it up,

but it's not hideable.

When I was 18, 17ish,
my grandmother passed away.

When I came to see her,

she would give me a kiss
on the forehead,

and when we would leave,

she would give me a kiss
on the forehead.

The little spot
that was on his temple

[crying]
is in the shape of a heart.

I told him, "That's a kiss
from your grandmother,

giving you the stamp
of approval

that she's proud of you,
Bryson."

Bryson: It was from that moment
that I, like,

began to really embrace
having vitiligo.

For me to be here proudly
wearing my vitiligo spots,

I hope to make
little Bryson proud.

Music just was the way

that I felt I could express
myself the most.

Yeah.
Kelsea: Yeah.

Listen, I understand

that I am probably
the least obvious choice,

but what I will say is
that I started

writing songs
when I was 12.

It became my saving grace,
my safety net,

my therapist,
my safest place.

And I feel that with you.

You're going to have an amazing

Being from
the Appalachian Mountains,

we have this way of life.

My grandfather was a coal miner.

My dad was a coal mine
equipment salesman.

And I'm very proud
to say that's where I'm from.

My dad showed me
my first chords on the guitar.

He influenced me to play music
and to sing.

And so I graduated high school,
went to college,

started a band, and I've been
doing that ever since.

I got some side hustles.

I am a real-estate agent
in the state of Kentucky.

And then I also mow lawns.
I mow a lot of grass.

But music is my primary source
of income.

And what that means is
being on the road

every chance that you can.

It's a lot of Thursday,
Friday, Saturdays.

If it's reasonable to make
it home before like 3:30 a.m.,

we're doing it,
and I'm gonna go to bed

and I'm gonna wake up
and I'm gonna still be Dad,

because you only get
so much time.

He is so loving.
He's the best father.

He's very present with us and
with our kids when he's there.

My family has had
to sacrifice so much

for me to do this.

For my day job,
I'm a sports reporter.

I started writing reports and
doing articles when I was 17.

Since then, I've been doing

any sort of journalism
in that regard.

Football is back.

I mostly do live broadcasts
on the internet.

That is my bread and butter
right now.

I love sports, yes,
but music was first for me.

We all liked, uh,

I was in a jazz band
in high school.

It was my first introduction
to really being on the stage.

Now I perform at weddings.

I perform at restaurants,

to do what I love.

Skydiving started off as, like,
a bucket-list-type of thing.

I went and I was terrified.

I'm not a heights person,
but I got down to the ground

and before I could
even get my knees

to carry my body weight again,
I was like,

"How do I do this more?"

I have been skydiving
over 700 times.

I lived in a camper,

so I traveled around
to different drop zones.

I'd jump during the day and then
I would play my shows at night.

That's the other thing
in my life

that I've been
super passionate about.

When I was 12,
I saw LeAnn Rimes.

She was only a couple years
older than I was,

and I remember going, "If she
can do that, I could do that."

So my mom said,
"If we're gonna do this,

we're gonna do it right."

We got in the studio,

recorded my very first record
at 15 years old.

We traveled around
doing live shows,

and now I play over 200 shows
a year on a regular basis.

I play a lot of shows
all over the world,

that gives me the butterflies.

I got my first guitar at 16.

Nowadays, I'm playing every

But about four years ago,
my grandpa --

he suffered an aneurysm,

because he's definitely

the only father figure I've had.

Definitely a hard experience.

The one thing
he does remember is music.

to me is a success.

a soccer platform

My dad was amazing.

I noticed he was getting sick.

He started having
issues breathing.

He had caught COVID,

started progressing

The doctor told all of us

that my dad had less than a week

and he was the most loving

I started playing sports
when I was 4 years old.
