- Erica Shepherd...

You're under arrest for espionage and conspiracy

against the United States of America.

Get her out of here.

- Let's go.

We need to get a transport.

- She's the most hated woman in America.

- CIA agent Erica Shepherd

spied for rogue terrorist Mikhail Tal.

- Four Americans died as a result of her actions.

- The Benedict Arnold of our generation.

- One of the worst traitors this country has ever seen.

[dramatic music]

Any available baggage handler to gate 7.

the kind of weather that makes you want to...

- Danyal, what's going on?

- We got three attacks, three different cities.

Philadelphia, New York, and here in D.C.

- Victims? - 14 dead so far

including a Treasure Department officer,

a US Distract Attorney, and three CIA operatives.

- What time were the attacks? - 8:00 a.m. All three.

- This was planned.

Synchronized, just like before.

This is Tal.

[suspenseful music]

- Mikhail Vassily Tal, 49 years old,

former Russian SVR agent,

and one of the greatest threats to America today.

In 2015,

he carried out the bombings of Flight 6175 in Boston.

Twenty-one people were ripped apart

when the bomb was detonated

while the plane was at its gate.

Had that plane been airborne,

the death toll would've risen to include

every single one of the 283 passengers aboard that flight.

That's what most of you know about the attack.

What most of you don't know is that the bombing of Flight 6175

was a trial run for 20 more bombings just like it.

Thousands of American lives were saved by the intel

that was gathered by the CIA.

But months later, Tal retaliated,

using Erica Shepherd to find and kill

the four operatives who stopped the bombings.

- You're certain Tal was behind this.

- There is not a doubt in my mind.

- The attacks three years ago were retaliatory.

- Danyal?

- The victims killed this morning

were part of a CIA lead task force

targeting Mikhail Tal's finances.

- Tal is out there.

He's well-funded and he's planning an attack

on American lives as we speak.

- You've been investigating Tal for three years

and this is all you have?

- Hunting Tal is like hunting a shadow at night.

- Well, this shadow just killed 14 people, Agent Keaton.

There has to be someone who can help you find him.

- The Deputy is right, Will.

We need to bring in another weapon.

- Huh, so who is it?

Another agency? Foreign intel?

- No. No, it's someone else,

someone who knows Tal better than anyone.

I want to bring in Erica Shepherd.

- What?

- She sees the world differently, Will.

She was one of the best code breakers

in the history of the CIA.

- Yeah, she's also a traitor.

- She worked with him. She knows how he thinks.

Hell, she was point on Tal for years at the CIA.

- She killed Laine.

She killed my fiancée. Did you forget that?

No.

No, I'm not doing it.

- Then I have to find someone who will.

- You're not taking this case from me.

- You're not giving me a choice, Will.

Americans are dead.

God knows how many more are at risk.

Erica Shepherd is the only chance we have

to find the man responsible.

I know what she took from you. Believe me, I do.

But this is the last card we have left to play.

Now I'm not asking you to like it, Will.

I'm asking you to do your job.

[somber music]

[buzzer]

[door opening and closing]

[buzzer]

[buzzer, door clicking]

- Hello, Agent Keaton.

- This won't take long.

I want to be here about as much as you do.

- I doubt that.

- I'm here to make you an offer.

The FBI and the Department of Justice

is willing to grant you certain concessions

in exchange for your cooperation.

- With what?

- Mikhail Tal.

- I haven't cooperated before.

What makes you think I will now?

- Because you live in a glass box.

Because you haven't been allowed to see a visitor

in over three years.

Because, believe it or not...

I can make life even worse for you.

- What concessions?

- Extra showers.

Up to an hour of music per week to start.

- Here?

- No, if you agree to cooperate,

you'll be transferred to

a federal detention facility in D.C.

[somber music]

- There's been chatter

that Tal is planning to carry out another attack

on members of the U.S. intelligence community.

The FBI wants your help to stop him.

- [chuckling]

[chains clinking]

Liar.

- Excuse me?

What'd you say?

- [sighing]

You want information on Mikhail Tal.

That much is true.

But the FBI didn't send you, of all people,

halfway across the country

because Tal is planning an attack.

You're here because he's already carried one out.

- I want to know how to find him.

- You will never find him.

- Tal killed 14 people this morning.

Three of them were CIA agents. You used to be one of them.

I need to know who he's working with.

- You need to look for someone on the inside.

- No.

No, see, not everyone

is capable of selling their soul like you are.

- You have no idea what people are capable of.

- I know what you're capable of!

I know what you're capable of!

- Back off, Keaton, now!

Get him out of here.

- Wait!

You should look for someone on the inside.

That's how Tal did it with me last time.

And as for helping him find Tal...

When do I leave?

[dramatic music]

[beeping]

- We're going to implant a GPS transponder

into your body.

It'll be locked around your subclavian artery.

You try to remove it,

you'll tear a vessel and bleed out within 60 seconds.

You're not going anywhere without us knowing.

[beeping]

[melancholy music]

- Morning. - Morning.

- What are you eating for breakfast?

- An energy bar.

- That's a candy bar in gym clothes.

You should eat eggs.

- Why don't you make me some?

- I'll learn how to cook them tomorrow.

Come on, let's go. We're late.

Hurry up and I'll let you drive.

- Really?

- No. - Mom.

- Someday. Not in my car.

Let's go.

[melancholy music]

[suspenseful music]

- Hey, Kate. - Huh?

- Heads-up--Keaton just pulled in downstairs.

- What? He's back already?

What was he doing in Colorado anyways?

- He wouldn't say.

- Well, you're an interrogator, Danyal.

Can't you pull it out of him?

- Even I'm not that good.

- He really didn't say anything?

'Cause Keaton tells you everything.

- Not this time. - Ugh, I'm really curious.

- Hey, Danyal. - What's up, Bragg?

- What's up is Metro PD's

got the whole crime scene locked up like a damn vault.

So let's throw our weight around

and we can get our techs in there tonight.

- No, we can't without the Assistant Director

signing off on it and that's not gonna happen.

- All right, then I'm going down there myself.

- Oh, my God.

[driving music]

[chains clinking]

[action music]

[chains clinking]

- Rangers.

You're looking at Agent Bragg's watch.

Tactical G-shock, so you're thinking former military

but you're not sure which unit.

Rangers.

Sit.

[chains clinking]

- What is going in, Will?

Why is Erica Shepherd sitting in our office?

- Bregman wanted to bring her in

because he thinks she can help catch Tal.

- And you went along with it? - I didn't have a choice.

- You sure, Will? 'cause it kind of looks like we just gave

the worst traitor in the last 50 years a visitor's badge.

- Either we work with Shepherd

or Bregman is gonna assign the case to someone that will.

- But-- - But what, Kate?

- What about Laine?

- The man that killed Laine is still out there.

If I have to work with the devil to catch Tal,

I will.

- We're actually doing this.

- Fourteen people were assassinated this morning

including three CIA agents:

Andrew Carris, Lynn Paige, and junior analyst Anna Cruz.

Where are we on the car shooting in Philly?

- Witnesses reported seeing two men riding motorcycles,

but no license plate numbers or descriptions of the drivers.

- Video?

- There's no security cameras on the country roads,

but I'm searching other sources.

- What about the bombing in New York?

What do we know? - Not a lot.

Forensics are still working on the cause of the explosion.

- Tell me we have something on the Union Station hit.

- Metro PD's still processing the scene.

I mean, it could be tomorrow morning

until we get anything useful.

- Okay, it's been 16 hours and we have nothing.

- That's because you're dealing with Mikhail Tal.

He knows how your investigation works

and he knows how to beat it.

That's why he's still out there.

To find him, you have to start pulling on threads

that you never thought to before.

In the past, Tal was known to go after

his target's cell phones.

- Kate?

- Uh, we checked the recovered cells.

There's no sign of cloning.

- That's because he doesn't clone them.

He rips them.

- What's the difference?

- Cloning lets you see incoming calls and texts.

It's like listening in on a second line.

Ripping is when you make a digital copy of the phone.

It is also impossible to detect.

- Almost impossible.

When a cell is being ripped,

it can't receive incoming calls.

- So-- - So if a call comes in

during the 20 minute process,

it shows up on the phone records,

but not on-- - But not on the phone itself.

- You find the discrepancy

and you not only find evidence of a ripped phone,

but you find the exact time and date that it happened.

- Unless you're lying to us.

Unless you're telling us anything

to keep us from following the real leads.

- You're right, Agent Keaton. I could be lying.

But you're still gonna check those phone records...

unless you wanna keep searching

for video surveillance of country roads.

- If you're wrong about this,

you're on a plane back to ADMAX tonight.

Run the search.

[beeping]

- Okay.

Treasury Official Joseph Sebring

had a call come in at 3:28 p.m. on Tuesday the 13th.

But the call never showed up on the phone.

That's impossible unless Shepherd was right.

- So how'd he do it?

- Tal, or somebody working for him,

would need to be within ten feet of the target's cell

in order to rip it remotely.

- Which means we're looking for someone who was within

ten feet of Sebring at 3:28 on the 13th.

- We've got her.

She's a hacker named Ines Nguyen.

We caught her on security footage

at a café with Sebring.

[suspenseful music]

- [groaning]

- You're here because you were caught on camera

ripping the cell phone of a Treasury Official.

An official who was killed in an office explosion yesterday.

So you have a problem.

Look, I'm trying to help you fix your problem,

but the only way I can is if you start telling me the truth.

Okay.

- I was contacted by a man named Victor Nemec.

- What did Nemec want from you?

- He paid me four grand to rip this guy Sebring's cell.

- Where's Nemec now?

- I don't know, I have the phone number he gave me.

That's--that's it.

- What about Mikhail Tal?

Did Nemec ever mention his name?

- No, never.

- Was there anyone else with him?

- No.

- She's lying.

- What?

- She's lying about something.

- No. Someone.

- Is there something you're not telling me, Ines?

- No. [scoffing]

- Who was with Nemec?

- What? - Someone else was with Nemec.

Who was it?

- I don't--I don't know.

- You don't know. She don't--

Who was with Nemec? - I don't know her name!

I don't know her name.

When I heard that Sebring's office had been bombed,

I-I freaked out so I went to see Nemec.

He, um,

he was putting a woman in his car.

Her hands were bound. She--

She looked really messed up. She--

I don't--I think that maybe she was in that explosion.

- Was that her? - No.

- Is that her? - No.

Wait, that's--

That's her; that's the woman Nemec was putting in his car.

She's alive.

[suspenseful music]

She's alive.

.

- My name is Anna Cruz.

I'm 27 years old and I'm interviewing for a position

as a financial analyst.

- And why do you want to work for the CIA?

- It's a challenge and an opportunity

to work with some of our nation's best minds.

Working at the Agency means I get to be part of

the first line of defense for my country.

I get to help save lives.

- God bless America. Welcome to the CIA.

- Thank you.

[somber music]

- How long have you been at the FBI, Agent Ryan?

- Six years.

- Have you always been in counterintelligence?

- Yes. - Under Agent Keaton?

- Yes?

- How long have you been in love with him?

- Listen up,

Anna Cruz is out there alone and in danger.

She's counting on us. Her family is counting on us.

So no mistakes, no excuses.

We find her and we bring her home.

- Here's who we're looking for. Victor Nemec.

43 years old.

Wanted by seven different countries for espionage

and political assassination.

We checked his last known address,

came up empty, same with known associates.

Let's concentrate on his cell.

- Kate, now where are you on that trace?

- Nemec's cell pinged off of a tower near the bombing site

36 hours ago, but nothing since then.

- Seventy-eight minutes after the attack,

somebody texted Nemec a photo from a blocked number.

The Seine River in Paris?

- That building right there. What is that?

- Yeah, we looked into it. It's a children's hospital.

- Well, why is Nemec being sent a map

of a children's hospital in Paris?

- He's not.

It's called a location cutout.

It's been decades since they were used.

They were common spycraft for the Soviet nations

during the Cold War.

Correspondence was constantly intercepted back then.

So operatives couldn't risk sending a map

of their actual location.

So they would send a section of a map

from a different city that looked like theirs.

A cutout.

Most cities have similar features, right?

Roads, bridges, parks.

In this case-- - An island.

Nemec was last seen in Brooklyn.

Kate, pull it. - Already on it.

- The Governor's Island is closest to Brooklyn.

Try that one.

- No. What else is nearby?

- Roosevelt. - Pull that up.

Overlayer.

That building that's pinned on the Roosevelt map.

What is that?

- It's an apartment building.

- We got Nemec.

Danyal, call the New York office.

Get them on that building ASAP. How long for the plane?

- If we leave now, we can be wheels up in 20 minutes.

- Whoa, whoa. What about Hannibal Lecter?

[buzzer]

- Don't do this.

You wouldn't even know Anna Cruz was alive

if it weren't for me.

- If it weren't for you?

[chuckles] If it weren't for you.

Hmm, yeah. That's a happy thought.

- I can do more. I can-- - No!

There is no redemption for people like you.

You're a traitor and you're a killer.

- You don't think I know that?

I wake up every day knowing

those four people are dead because of me.

- They have names!

Those four people have names.

- Steven Haibach, Brian Lanich,

Desiree Villareal,

and Laine Heffron, your fiancée.

I know their names, Agent Keaton.

I know the names of their parents and their children.

I know everything about them

because I've lived with their ghosts

for the last three years.

- And so have I.

You've been in my life too long.

When Laine was at the CIA, she would--

she would come home.

And she would tell me all about this--

this brilliant woman she worked with.

She didn't just look up to you.

She wanted to be you.

If it weren't for you...

- [sighing]

[tires screeching]

- All right. Be operator. Let's go.

- Any sign of Anna Cruz? - No, nothing yet.

- All right, let's get in there.

Danyal, with me. Let's go.

[somber music]

- [sighing]

[heart beating]

[clanging] [crunching]

[coughing]

- Let's go. Let's go. Now.

- I'm gonna give you some Novocain for the pain.

Do you have any allergies? - Uh-uh. Uh-uh.

- Okay.

- Ah!

- Amy, we're gonna need some x-rays.

[ominous music]

[elevator dinging]

- Charlie Team, entering third floor.

- D Team, just entering four.

[pounding]

- Door on two.

- FBI. Open up.

FBI! Freeze!

- Freeze! - Check that apartment!

[ominous music]

[gunshots ringing]

- [groaning]

- Damn it! - Bragg, are you hit?

Are you hit?

- I think it caught the vest.

Danyal, get his gun. [coughing]

- Let me see.

No blood. You're good, you're good.

Let's get you out of here.

- [groaning]

- Where is she? Where's Anna Cruz?

- All great empires die from within.

[groaning]

- It's okay.

You all right?

- Did you find Cruz?

- She wasn't there. Neither was Nemec.

But they were. This is Cruz's cell.

It was in the apartment powered off.

We just missed her.

- The x-ray scan takes 30 seconds.

Sir, you're gonna wanna step out.

[ticking]

[whirring]

[tense music]

[cuffs clicking]

- [grunting]

[alarm blaring]

[phone vibrating]

- This is Keaton.

- Will, we have a problem.

Erica Shepherd has escaped.

.

- She was in our custody. How the hell did she escape?

- She had a medical emergency

and she was transported off site.

- Where is she now?

- We don't know.

- You don't know. You don't know.

The woman's a walking threat to national security

and you don't know where she is.

What about the device the was planted in her chest?

- It's gone dark.

She escaped wearing a lead apron.

We think it's why the GPS device isn't transmitting.

[suspenseful music]

[siren wailing]

[clicking]

[beeping]

- We're sitting on Shepherd's old address

and her ex-husband's place.

Nothing yet. You knew her better than anyone.

Where is she going?

- I have no idea. Okay, as far as I know

she hasn't spoken to anybody in three years.

We lost Cruz. There's no sign of Nemec.

I'm gonna come back to D.C. to find Shepherd.

- No. No, no, I need to you to stay there.

I'll find her.

- How are you feeling?

- Like I just got shot in the chest.

- What did the medic say?

- Couple of cracked ribs. I'll be all right.

- Yeah, it probably hurts a lot.

- You know, Will, only when I breathe.

- Hey, Will.

Just scanned the laptop we found.

Someone made multiple searches for Logan Airport,

Pier 19 Terminal, and North Station.

I think Nemec is headed to Boston.

[suspenseful music]

- If you agree to cooperate,

you'll be transferred

to a federal detention facility in D.C.

[cell phone ringing]

- Yes, Bregman.

- Shepherd didn't want to just get out of prison.

She wanted to go home.

I know where she is.

[melancholy music]

[school bell ringing]

[solemn music]

[police sirens]

[no audio]

.

[cell phone vibrating]

- Hey, Kate, what's up?

- Shepherd is taken into custody

and is being escorted back to holding.

- Any word on Nemec?

- A silver sedan was spotted

entering the Pier 19 Shipping terminal.

- Danyal, we got Nemec. Pier 19.

- Be careful!

[engine revving]

[cell phone vibrating]

- This is Bregman.

Oh, well, that is really good news, Agent Ryan.

That's great.

Keep me in the loop in that.

- They found Nemec?

- He was spotted heading into a shipping terminal

in Jeffries Point.

Keaton and the team are moving in now.

- Tal's leading them back to Boston.

- What?

- It was the site of the first attack.

The bombings in Logan Airport.

Tal doesn't just care about getting Anna Cruz.

He wants to take out as many American lives as possible.

Five years ago,

I had a team of operatives that were hunting Tal in Belgium.

They followed him to the port of Antwerp,

and when they got there, it was a trap.

He had planted explosives.

Half a dozen Belgian police officers were killed by IEDs.

He is leading them!

Warn Keaton!

[suspenseful music]

- Danyal, I just got a call from Bregman.

He has intel that Tal may have planted IEDs here.

So eyes open, okay?

- Copy that.

I got a silver car 100 yards ahead!

- It's Nemec!

[engine revving]

[tires screeching]

[engine revving]

[pulsing music]

- [groaning]

[tires screeching]

[car horn blaring]

- Danyal, you okay?

- I'm good. Go, go! Get after him!

Watch out! There might be more IEDs!

[truck horn blaring]

[tires squealing]

[truck horn blaring]

- [yelling]

[groaning]

[seat belt clicking]

[groaning]

[ominous music]

- Anna.

I got you. I got you.

Anna Cruz. Anna.

Wake up, Anna. Anna. Can you wake up?

Anna. Anna.

- [gasping]

- I'm Agent Will Keaton. You're safe now.

You're safe.

- [sobbing]

.

[sirens wailing]

[knocking]

- I was hoping I'd see you.

- Listen, I'm--I'm sorry. I--I can come back--

- No, please.

Come in.

I actually wanted to thank you.

I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for you.

- I'm just glad you're okay.

- Are you going to find him?

- I'm trying. - Those people Tal killed.

They were my friends.

I want to help with the investigation.

I just need to make him pay for what he did.

- Okay.

We'll figure it out.

You get some rest, okay? - Okay.

[door opening and closing]

[buzzer]

- I didn't think I'd see you again, not after today.

- Wasn't really worried about it.

Knew they'd catch you sooner or later.

- Do you really think I'd be here if I wanted to escape?

- What are you doing, Erica?

Why are you cooperating with us?

Why did you warn me about the port?

- I'm not sure I can answer that.

- Well, I'm gonna have to tell Bregman that he either

sends you back to Colorado tonight or I quit.

I need to know.

What happened the day Laine was killed?

I need to know why, who did it.

The real reason why you did it.

- Erica!

The school called. Hannah didn't show up today.

[tires screeching]

[cell phone ringing]

[ringing continues]

[beeping]

- Hello, Erica.

I'm watching your daughter.

- Tal. - She is a beautiful girl.

- [panting]

- You should be very proud.

I want their names.

The four CIA operatives who stopped those bombings.

- Don't hurt her!

- That isn't my decision to make.

It's yours. - [panting]

- It's up to you whether your daughter dies today or not.

It's a simple choice.

- Can we talk? - Your daughter's life

or theirs. - Wait! Wait!

- Five,

four-- - Just stop counting!

- Three,

two,

one-- - Steven Haibach,

Brian Lanich, Desiree Villareal,

Laine Heffron!

- Thank you.

- I didn't work with Tal.

I didn't spy for him.

I made a choice to save my daughter.

- Then why didn't you say anything?

Why did you keep it a secret for three years?

- Hannah.

Telling the world would mean she'd have to live

the rest of her life knowing she was responsible

for the death of four people.

I couldn't do that to my daughter.

People say they would die for their children,

but the truth is that's easy.

Living for them is hard.

Suffering for them--

Giving up your freedom, being hated by your country,

that--that's hard.

I want to be close to my daughter.

I want to fight every day to earn my way back into her life.

I want to be the parent my father never was.

But I also want to catch Tal.

Not just because he destroyed my life,

but because every day that he is free

is a day my daughter's life is unsafe.

- How?

- I spent three years in a cell

asking myself that question

and then it hit me.

Tal didn't come after me

because I helped stopped those bombings.

He came after me because of what I was about to discover.

In 2013, there were a few dozen rogue spies like Tal

operating in the U.S.

In 2014, a hundred.

But in 2015, that number skyrocketed to 3,000

and it is still growing.

These are highly trained deadly operatives

in every city, in every state,

hiding in plain sight

as teachers,

engineers,

husbands and wives.

Ticking time bombs.

This is not random. This is a coordinated effort.

- To do what? - I don't know. Not yet.

But I know that Tal is connected.

You can stop him, Agent Keaton.

You can save this country.

But you cannot do it without me.

[ringing]

- Are you alone?

Can you speak?

- Yes.

- Does the FBI suspect anything?

[ominous music]

- No, nothing.

- How long before you make contact with Agent Keaton?

- I already have.

Your plan worked perfectly, Mikhail.

I'm in.

[dramatic music]
