It was fun digging with fred.

I got a lot of dirt moved today.

I have people always ask me,

"Well, fred, when are you
Going to stop.

And you're going to start
Doing regular things in life?"

And I said, "About the time
I'm under about 6 feet of dirt."

Fred has that one leg of his,
You know,

That he has to work on,

You know,
Work harder to do things.

Let's picture a 75-year-old guy
With a short leg.

Working and hiking.

It's crazy, man, just to think
About what you got to go through.

To do normal, everyday stuff.

Old man's still at it, man.

The handicap with this leg,
The way that I walk...

It was a driving force
In my life.

That I was going to be
Just as good as anybody else.

What the hell is that, fred?

Hey, that's my
Climbing boots, man.

Put me a little brace on there.

Going to add another inch
On that thing.

I'm almost as tall as
I'm supposed to be.

Well, people look at me and say,
"You got a big boot there."

Yep, that's my nickname...
Big boot.

I don't think he's ever told me
What actually happened.

I heard a lot of stories
Here and there.

I used to mow grass around
The top of a hill,

And I always went one direction
For so long.

That my leg Just got shorter.

You know, I know he's mentioned
How he got his big boot,

But I think It had to do with...

He said an alligator
Got a hold of him.

I was a little kid.

We were on a picnic,
And my mother and dad,

As young couples do,
They got a little amorous.

They forgot about me,
Being a little 2-year-old kid.

I crawl over by the bayou,

And this little 6-foot little
Alligator grabbed a hold of me.

And if you believe that,
I've got a couple more stories.

He laughs about them
Every time, whatever it is.

I mean, he's got, like,
A 7-inch or 8-inch short leg.

I went through a lot.

I mean, I went through a lot.

They didn't expect me to live.

In fact, the hospital personnel
Basically,

I think, was hoping
I would go ahead and die.

My leg was fractured.

I had a cast from hip to toe.

Actually, I had one picture.

I'm sitting with my brother.

So it would hide the cast
With my foot behind him.

When it was wound up being set
And everything,

It wound up being bent,

Twisted, crooked, and shorter,

But other than that, there
Wasn't nothing wrong with it.

Nothing.

Fred ended up with his left leg.

A full 7 inches shorter
Than his right.

Having one leg shorter
Than the other gave me incentive.

To do very well at anything
I tried to do,

Whatever it happened to be.

When I was teenager, I found out
That I could swim like a fish.

I really enjoyed the water,

And it made me better
Than other people.

Because I could outswim them,

And I got to tell you,
That made me feel good.

I bought this little book
For a dollar.

It said, "How to scuba dive,".

So I taught myself
How to scuba dive.

That was the beginning of
My commercial diving career.

Fred went on to run
His own construction company.

And worked as a diver
For 10 years.

On oil rigs
And demolition projects.

In the gulf of mexico
And the mighty mississippi.

If I was going to go
Do something,

I had to do it better
Than the next guy.

It basically just gave you
A sense of my work ethic,

And lots of people
Complained about that.

And the real story
Behind fred's big boot.

When I was about 2 years old,
I had this accident,

And what happened is
That nobody will know...

Because I'm not
Going to tell you.

Anybody that's ever worked
With their father or son.

Knows that there's history,
And there's a power struggle.

It's difficult working
Under dustin.

Side by side with dustin.

I couldn't believe
That first day.

Rich runs his

In the army as a mechanic.

He was a certified welder
At one time,

And he worked
On diesel mechanic.

I said, "Wow, that's
The kind of guy I need."

They truly had a swiss army
Knife, not just a computer geek,

And then I also dredged
For about 5 years.

Before I went to alaska.

- I love dredging for gold.
- Yeah.

Fred also brought in
A second crew member,

Veteran gold miner Casey morgan,

Relocated from arizona
For the summer.

I'm a gold hound.

I can sniff out gold
Really well.

I don't miss it.

I knew casey
From several years back.

I figured that casey had some
Ability as far as dredging.

He had shown me a few places
That he went out and dredged.

I've been a dredger in arizona
For over 10 years.

When I saw that casey
Was bigger than me,

I was very happy about that.

This is the real deal.

This is dangerous,
And what is it you've done?

I've done just about every type
Of mining there is for gold.

I will get you to the bottom
Of that hole and find.

That gold you're looking for.

He was pretty full of himself.

I didn't know these guys at all
Before the season started,

What they were bringing.

I needed rich and casey
To work for me,

Put our operation and make

The greenhorns were

When the dakota boys
Had to chopper in fuel.

To keep their season alive.

I'm going to need some help

That particular morning,
Casey and I,

We load our gear
Up into the atv.

All packed and ready to go
Get down there and help fred.

That was the plan.

In alaska's backcountry,

The treacherous journey
To the heli load site.

Is a 2 1/2 mile
Atv trail over a mountain.

We depend on those helicopters.

We had to be there
At least 15 minutes prior.

I expected them to be there.

They should have been here
A half hour, 45 minutes ago.

To help me Get the barrels off.

So I start up, drive all the way
Up the mountain,

Come down the backside,
Get out of the atv,

And realize that
The back hatch wasn't closed.

All of our 's gone.

Every possession of mine
In alaska.

When I was up there was
Strung out over the mountain.

We ran back up the mountain,

And we find our crap
Scattered all over the road.

Thank god no grizzly bears
Got it.

We got a helicopter.
It's costing me $2,500 an hour,

And I can't sit
And talk for a second.

Where in the hell are they at?

I mean, these two guys,
Rich and casey,

Were brand-new on the job site,
And then they don't show up?

Fred, we are on site and ready.

So far, carlos is

They wouldn't leave us alone.

This is the last frontier, man.
It's wild.

We got rubber bullets
In this thing.

The last thing we want to do
Is kill that bear,

But we definitely got to
Scare it away from here.

I respect the animal.

I love animals, but I've got
No problem putting them.

Into salami sticks too.

Try to think like a bear.

We just moved into his backyard.

He thinks he smells food.

He's out in the wilderness,
And he is hungry.

Where would you be?
Right here where the food is at.

He's just a bear,
And we're smarter than him.

We'll outthink him,
And we don't have to kill him.

Get used to him being around.
He's going to test us every day.

To this day, my little girl

Because I'm just tired

This season, My first dive.

That's terrifying.

It was really getting serious.

That's how deep we were.

That is a long way up there.

I'm not one for giving up,

That I'm going to try to get
Through it, but at what risk?

How long do I have?

How dangerous do I let it get?

Every time you go there,
There's a chance of dying now.

That water scared the hell
Out of me, man.

It scared the crap out of me.

Super fricking dangerous
Down there.

It's kind of the places
Nightmares are made of.

Fricking valley of death.

It's so hard for me to explain
What it feels like to be down.

At the bottom of that hole.

We were in this narrow,
Narrow trench about that deep.

That just kept going down,
Down, down, down,

With giant rocks overhead.

Every single day
There was a landslide.

Right now everybody's
Waiting for dustin.

To make that call
That it's unsafe.

It became more and more
Dangerous.

Things had to change.

The danger Of the dive hole.

Forced dustin to make
A tough decision.

All right, guys, I know it's not
Our turn to dive,

But fred and I
Are going to go down.

Because it's just getting
Too dangerous.

It's worth the risk for fred
And I, but not so much you guys.

This is not a manly thing.

I don't have a family
Or children.

Or any of that stuff
To take care of,

So I feel comfortable going down
There and risking my life.

- This is real danger.

On the crew
That are going to die,

Fred can handle himself,

Than we thought.

It tried twice on us To kill us.

But I'm the one that got down to
The bedrock first, not dustin.

It's amazing that we got down
To bedrock.

There was times when everyone
Doubted me except for fred.

That'll stand by your side,

As much as we fight.

As much crazy As he does,

To stand by me.

And just keep digging.

We can't stop.

We just need to go up and work
Our way underneath that tree.

To get down to that spot,

Convinced everybody.

But it's way up there.
