I wanted to be a Hells Angel

because they had
that togetherness,
that brotherhood.

Drinking whiskey,
drinking beer.

They won't do you wrong
unless you do them wrong.

In the '60s, they just had
a lot of fun and games
and a lot of partying.

And then in the '70s,
they became gangsters.

KERRIE DROBAN: Butch Crouch
was the brutal driving force

behind the
Cleveland Hells Angels.

-People were getting murdered,
people were disappearing.
-(GUN FIRES)

The Cleveland Hells Angels
moved from a motorcycle club
to a murder cult.

You (BLEEP)
with the Hells Angels,

they are gonna
(BLEEP) stomp you.

Bomb city.

There were bombs
going off everywhere.

TOM DOYLE: Killing women
and children was beneath him.

Butch thought that was wrong.
Totally wrong.

Butch began to question
what he was doing,

and what the Hells Angels
were doing.

This culminated in the
most experienced member
of the Hells Angels chapter

sharing their most
closely-guarded secrets.

It was devastating.

He betrayed the patch.

MAN: Over and over,
they say they are
not criminals,

they're rebels
rebelling against a society
for which they have no respect.

We never gave a (BLEEP)
about what anybody else thought.

We're mostly a bunch
of happy-go-lucky guys

trying to make it
in this world, you know.

KERRI KRYSKO: They're misfits,
they're outlaws,

and they defy
the laws of attraction.

I don't know,
I idolize 'em, I adore 'em.

They're my whole life.

Angels forever,
forever Angels.

Speaks for itself.

The Hells Angels are not
a criminal organization.

Why don't you people go home!

GEORGE CHRISTIE:
It's an organization
with criminals in it.

The Hells Angels run
a massive propaganda scheme.

And the unknowing gulped down
that Hells Angels Kool-Aid.

Everybody just cool out.

Hells Angels, everybody!

JAY DOBYNS:
That is all designed
to hide murder, rape,

drug trafficking, gun running,
extortion, assault, arson.

I'm not trying
to glorify my life,

but I'm certainly
not going to apologize for it.

I'm doing extreme stuff.

-For what?
-I'm telling it the way
it really happened.

I never thought
I'd be talking openly
about this stuff.

-INTERVIEWER: Ready for this?
-I'm ready.

MATT ZANOSKAR:
Fifty some years ago, I used to
work around this neighborhood.

It used to be
quite a neighborhood.

It changed.

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

Yeah.

I was just going
to the bike show.

Butch Crouch
was in front of me,

and we were
walking through the crowd

because this was our house,
this was our event.

And it was obvious they come in
those kind of numbers,

and they're all looking at us.

No guns.

But the knives were out.

In the Hells Angels,
you can't be running
your mouth.

And some things
some people will not tell you

because it's none
of your business.

You ain't gonna know.

If you're not a member,
you're not gonna know.

Cleveland,
it was a tough town,

but it was
a hard-working town.

At the time,
my livelihood was ironwork.

I worked hard
and made myself available

to as much fun
as I possibly could.

It was 1970

when I really started
getting into building my bike
and riding my bike.

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

I wanted to ride with the best.

(MELLOW ROCK MUSIC PLAYING)

They had that togetherness,
that brotherhood,
and they helped one another.

They won't do you wrong
unless you do them wrong.

Seemed pretty exciting to me.

I want to be part of that.

Can you find me?

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

ZANOSKAR: How did you do that?

You know why?
Because I'm standing
next to a guy

that's, like, 6'4", 6'5".

I was standing
on two telephone books,
Cleveland telephone books,

because I wanted to stand
with the big guys.

(LAUGHING)

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

ZANOSKAR: That's Butch Crouch.

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

ZANOSKAR: In time.

I joined because
of a brotherhood.

We were one family,
one big family,

and we'd all help each other.

You know, it was something
that we'd all grow old
and be proud of,

you know, a brotherhood.

DOYLE: In 1970,
Sonny Barger wanted to expand
the Hells Angels nationally,

so he sent
Butch Crouch to organize
the Cleveland chapter,

increase the size
of the Cleveland chapter

and, of course,
increase their power.

And their power would come
from selling drugs.

PAT MATTER:
When I first met him,

I was already warned
about Butch.

He had a reputation
for being a very serious
Hells Angel and dedicated.

He had stabbed multiple people
in a bar fight.

One thing
that sticks out in my mind
about Butch Crouch,

Butch's girlfriend's dog
was barking.

He got up out of the bed
and shot him.

(GUN FIRES)

She was not happy with that.

So he took a knife,
and he stabbed her foot
to the floor.

Not a very nice man.

DROBAN: Butch Crouch
was born in 1940
in Shreveport, Louisiana

in the sort of background
that really attracted people
to the biker culture

and that lifestyle.

He grew up
in a dysfunctional family.

His mother was deaf,
his father died.

So Butch had
a very hardened view
of the world.

By the time he was 19,
he got into a brawl.

And he did a few years
in a Texas prison.

When you grow up in a place
that's economically depressed,

the Hells Angels
looks very attractive.

That's their opportunity
to be a part of something
that promises an exciting life.

I was a detective
in the Greater Cleveland area
for 39 years.

Over the years,
I've been involved
in investigations

of the Cleveland chapter
of the Hells Angels.

When Butch came to Cleveland,
he came here to recruit people,

recruit good people.

He had that ability
to size people up

and recognize aspects
of their personality

that were beneficial
to the Hells Angels.

Intelligence,
cunning, loyalty.

The ability to be violent
at the drop of a hat.

Fortunately, there was
the Vietnam War going on.

We finally
have reached the point

where we can begin to bring
Americans home from Vietnam.

(SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING)

DOYLE: You had a sense
when you came back...

of disappointment.

People didn't feel
they fit into society anymore

after what
they'd seen and done.

You could just leave adrenaline
constantly every day

just to stay alive.

And come back here,
and somebody wanted me to work
9:00 to 5:00 at a factory?

Or I can get a motorcycle
and ride at 90 miles an hour
and party my brains out.

It's a choice you gotta make.

Vietnam did help with
the Hells Angels recruiting.

The bond
that forms in the military,
it's more than a friendship.

We're a brotherhood.

There were
a number of other clubs,

but people coming
from the military would want
to go to the Hells Angels

because you want
to join the best.

A lot of Vietnam vets
were in the Hells Angels
at the time.

Military, one, two,
military, three, four, five.

He was in the Navy. Him.

That's about it.

DOYLE: After bringing in
some new members,

Sonny wanted Butch
to use the Angels

to get rid of
some of the other clubs
that were in Cleveland.

Because each of those clubs
would be selling
methamphetamine.

So it was about drugs,
it was about territory.

They would beat them up,
intimidate them.

They would do
what they needed to do
to take over their market.

One step at a time,
one club at a time,
one individual at a time.

The Hells Angels in Cleveland
thought that they were going
to dominate,

and it was just
a matter of time.

In 1971,
the Hells Angels got rid
of most of their competition.

The one that was left,

the one that was not being
intimidated was the Breed.

These Breed had been
riding together for a while.

Around 1970,
they came to Cleveland.

They put patches on just about
every little Honda rider
all over town.

They started just building up
their numbers real big.

ZANOSKAR: That space there
was the Polish Women's Hall.

It was a Polish neighborhood,
and they would have
events there.

They decided
to have a bike show

to show trophy motorcycles,
custom motorcycles.

The Hells Angels
had several bikes in the show,

but at the time,
I wasn't a member.

I was a hang-around.

I wanted to be
like these guys.

We came in the front entrance,
and we're there.

"Oh, we're at the bike show.

"Oh, good time.
Ah, beautiful bikes.

"Look at that chick over there.
Wow. Yeah. Hey."

Crouch was in front of me.

And we're walking up the steps,
and we're looking around.

And the Breed
first started coming in.

I'd never heard
of any kind of rivalry.

I'm not a member. I'm not privy
to that kind of information.

MIKE DUGAN:
There was an off-duty officer
working the event.

He called the district, saying,
"It looks like there's going
to be trouble."

I was one of those officers
dispatched to help.

Upon my arrival,
one thing that popped out,

there were a lot more Breed
than there were Hells Angels.

You've got to understand
the numbers of people.

There was one article,
this guy says he lost count
at 124 Breed.

And I always say
that there was 32
of us there in total.

And we're going up
to where the rest
of the Hells Angels were.

And they're all looking at us.

As we're walking through there,
walking through the crowd.

And that hall is packed now.

Butch locked eyes with
some Breed member, he says,

"You know, why don't you
suck my (BLEEP)? Give me some
(BLEEP)", you know?

And then the (BLEEP)
hit the fan.

I saw somebody
jump very quickly,

and then everybody
was fighting around me.

They're screaming, some crying.

The panic.

Crouch gutted somebody.

One of the Breed, he gutted him
from his (BLEEP) to his teeth.

DUGAN: We called
a citywide alert.

Any policeman
anywhere in the city

go to Marble and Broadway,
Polish Women's Hall.

There was, like, 200 people.

All that energy,
all that violence.

When you're outnumbered
almost eight to one,

you've got to watch your back,
you've got to watch your side

and you've got to watch
the guy in front of you.

DUGAN: You could see
knives flashing,

people were
dropping to the ground,
trails of blood all over.

And the knife wounds
were focused on the back.

I was a hang-around,
I wasn't a member.

This was all new to me.

I mean, there was no plan.

It just happened.

We were defending ourselves.

That was planned.
That wasn't self-defense.

I've heard from several people
who were patch-wearing members
of the Hells Angels

that it was planned
ahead of time.

CROUCH: Prior to
the Polish Women's Hall,

these Breed,
they said that they were going
to come there to that hall,

and they weren't going to leave
until all the Hells Angels
were down.

And we'd heard about it.

A policeman
had told us about it.

DOYLE: So the Angels
brought in members
from other chapters,

Massachusetts,
several chapters from New York,

and they prepositioned weapons

inside the hall
a day or so before.

They had been in the military,

and they understood
the importance of surprise.

They knew that they were
going to be surrounded

by Breed members in colors,
and that occurred.

But unbeknownst to the Breed,

there were a number
of other Angels
from other chapters

not in colors
that had surrounded them.

So when it started,
the Breed were taken
by surprise,

and they suffered
many casualties.

They were men against boys.

They didn't know
what was happening.

I kept hitting this one kid,
and I noticed his eyes
was rolling back.

And I looked up,
and there was an arm
coming down with a knife in it,

and he stuck me in the chest.

So I pulled my knife,
and I killed him.

That was the first person
I ever killed.

Then I went on,
and I got stabbed again,
and I got stabbed in the back.

And I woke up on the floor
with my knife sticking
in some guy.

Then there's a lull.

Everybody's looking around.

And naturally,
you hear police sirens.

There's cops now
coming into the door.

We put some people in a car,
and we took off.

DUGAN: There were policemen
from all over the city
grabbing bikers.

A picture emerged
like something no officer
ever sees in his career.

NEWSCASTER:
Five persons were killed
and 22 injured last night

when two motorcycle gangs
fought during a motorcycle show
in Cleveland.

MAN: I found one
dead on arrival.

One died on the cart.

One died for me
on the operating table.

Obviously, the end score
is what mattered to everybody.

And there were five Breed killed
and only one Hells Angel.

DOYLE: The Polish Women's Hall
was about drugs.

After Polish Women's Hall,
the Hells Angels took over

basically all the
methamphetamine
distribution in the...

In the Greater Cleveland area.

MUHIC: There was a quote
from Sonny Barger that said,

"In the '60s, we just had
a lot of fun and games
and a lot of partying.

"And then in the '70s,
they became gangsters."

After the Polish Women's Hall,
People feared them.

They established themselves
very firmly as "We're the boss."

Fifty-six
motorcycle gang members
were formally charged

with first-degree murder
in Cleveland today,

following that fight
between rival gangs
at a cycle show last Saturday.

DOYLE: The problem was
people from either side,
the Breed or the Angels

would not talk to the police,
would not cooperate.

They all kept
their mouth shut.

They were all charged
with multiple counts of murder.

Some walked away with
one count of manslaughter each
and probation.

They not only beat the Breed,
but they beat the legal system.

(BUZZER SOUNDS)

They went to jail,
and they were there for
about seven, eight months.

ZANOSKAR: Day after
the Polish Women's Hall,
I went to go visit them.

Crouch was having
a hard time walking.

He got stabbed in the back,

and it took him a while

to get the mobility
back in his legs.

They were reading books.

(CHUCKLES)
Yeah, The Godfather
had come out.

(FLUTE MUSIC PLAYING)

DOYLE: The Godfather
had a big impact
on a lot of people.

I'm gonna make him an offer
he can't refuse.

While in jail, someone obtains
a copy of The Godfather,

and it's read
and passed around.

They fell in love
with the whole lore
of the Mafia.

And they were able to take
a lot of those philosophies
and ideologies.

To become
a made member of the Mafia,

you have to commit a murder.

They sit there and look
around the cellblock,

and they realize
we've already done that.

They realized
if you have a organization

where everyone
is bonded by murder,

the person
who commits the murder

is not going
to turn on the club.

That ensures silence
and that ensures loyalty.

We all became secret
and organized.

A new member,
when he joins the club,
he has to kill someone.

He has six months
to roll his bones.

And if they renege on that,
then they are killed,

because then he knows too much.

DOYLE: In The Godfather,
they make their bones,

bikers roll their bones.

If you're willing to do this,
then you're willing to be
a brother for life.

DOYLE: It was
a closely-guarded secret,

new members are required
to roll your bones.

You're required to kill.

I was a prospect
for, um, 19 weeks

before I got my patch.

When I got my patch,
I became a member.

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

I don't know.

MUHIC: The Hells Angels
dealt with the Breed,

but their nemesis
throughout the entire country
would be the Outlaws.

You know,
chomping at their heels.

They want
to be number one.

MAN: The Hells Angels
and the Outlaws

are in a bloody struggle
for the drug and vice trade.

(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING)

They are,
to say the least, well-armed,

and a lot of
their time is spent

going to
gang members' funerals.

DOYLE: In terms of
rolling your bones,

if I am going
to kill for the club,

I'm going to gain status
in the club by doing it.

But I'm gonna
gain greater status
by killing an Outlaw.

Then the Outlaw war came along.

And the killings just
kind of got out of hand.

DOYLE: To go after the Outlaws,
they put together a taking care
of business fund. TCB.

The Cleveland chapter
used that money

to travel around the country,
killing for other chapters.

If you had a problem,
no matter what chapter
you were,

you called Cleveland,
and business was taken care of.

They created a murder cult.

CHRISTIE:
The Polish Women's Hall
put Cleveland on the map.

After that,
they had a reputation of

"You don't want
to (BLEEP) with these guys."

MATTER: I knew
the Cleveland Hells Angels.

They were serious individuals.

They was known well
for taking care
of business.

DROBAN: Murder became
so normalized in
the Cleveland chapter.

There were
no repercussions for it.

MAN: The leader
of the Outlaws found
the bodies at dawn.

He described the scene
as a slaughterhouse.

They began to want to monetize
this particular skill set.

DOYLE: As long as I'm killing,
I might as well make
money for it.

So it evolved into
contract murders.

DROBAN:
By the mid-1970s,
the Hells Angels

became much more
of an organized
criminal syndicate.

DOYLE: The chapters
have a President,
a Vice President,

a Treasury Secretary,
a Sergeant at Arms.

And after
the Polish Women's Hall,

they appointed someone
an intelligence officer.

Intelligence officer
was established back in '73,

and it was an office to gather
all the information they could

on any club
in the United States,

any police officer,
any newsman.

Anybody that the Hells Angels
had a grudge against.

And when the new member
was to roll his bones,

the intelligence
would set up the hit.

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

Yeah, you mentioned
that yesterday.

(STAMMERS) What's that about?

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

No, I never told you that.

I never referred to myself
as an intelligence officer.

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

-You said about...
-Investigator. There you go.

DOYLE: Matt Zanoskar
was viewed as one of the people

who was collecting
information on us,

"us" being the police officers.

People don't understand
the ability they have
to collect information.

There was a Hells Angel
that was married

to a Cleveland police officer.

One of them
had a girlfriend who worked
as a clerk of courts.

One of them had a girlfriend
who worked for
the phone company.

CROUCH: Hells Angels
know a lot of people.

They call them spies
that bring them information.

Numerous police officers,
police chiefs.

They keep a record of everyone.

The person, types of cars,
what girls they used
to go with, families.

DOYLE: I know that they had
information on my family.

They knew where my children
went to school.

Some people viewed them
as a group of people

that were just drinking
and riding motorcycles.

What are you talking about?

You're being paranoid,
but I know those files existed.

REPORTER: Another bombing here
in the Greater Cleveland area,

the bombing capital
of the United States.

Bomb city.

There were bombs
going off everywhere.

Both his legs are blown off.

That man
will never walk no more,
long as he live.

There was
a large number of people

that were either killed
or disappeared.

And many of them were
organized crime related.

Cleveland really became
a war zone.

In one year alone,
there were 37 bombings.

CERMAK: The most
difficult part about being

the bombing capital
of the country

was the fact that we were
not putting anybody in jail.

We just kept knocking up
against a brick wall.

DROBAN: One of the
most notorious bombings

took place on
January 7th, 1975.

And it will have
an impact on Butch Crouch

that reverberates
for a very long time.

(BOMB EXPLODING)

(DOOR CREAKS OPEN)

(BOMB EXPLODING)

DROBAN:
This particular bombing
really impacted the city.

A young woman
by the name of Mary Ann Sigley

and her two-year-old son
are killed.

DOYLE: Was this a random act?

Is this a person who was crazy
out there doing something?

People were horrified.

DROBAN:
After the Sigley murders,

the citizens of Cleveland
were really alarmed.

It, sort of,
woke the city up to,

you know,
we've got a real problem here.

This is the intelligence report
from the Sigley bombings.

One person reported
the sky being illuminated
just before the explosion.

Some of the other witnesses
also reported hearing
individuals laughing

and running away
just before the blast.

The forensic examination
showed some portions

of the explosive device
had military components.

One of the components
was a parachute flare.

Phosphorus flare.

That's unusual.

That's military
type equipment.

There have been
a number of large-scale thefts
of military weapons.

DOYLE: Just before
the Cleveland bombings,
and shortly after Vietnam,

people were
breaking into armories

stocked with
military equipment.

When the girlfriend
of a Hells Angel

informed Cleveland Intelligence

about a cache of weapons,
a search warrant was done.

They found
one anti-tank rocket,

one pound
of unknown explosives,
one 1.5 pound block of TNT,

different types
of hand grenades,

and two signal
parachute flares.

There were
bombings in Cleveland

where parachute flares
were involved.

It established a link between
some of the Cleveland bombings
and the Hells Angels.

MUHIC: These guys had
armament training
in Vietnam,

and they came back
and used that training here
to make money.

DROBAN: The evidence
pointed to the Hells Angels
being involved

in the Sigley bombing,

where the mother
and two-year-old child
were killed.

DOYLE: At a later date,
I learned the real story
about the Sigley bombing.

Harry Chakirelis was having
a one-year anniversary

of his ascension
to full patch member.

At that party,
there was a cake.

And it was pointed out
that he had not
rolled his bones.

There was
some hard feelings about it.

The cake was
taken by Chakirelis,
and he said,

"When I come back,
I'll have rolled my bones."

The Hells Angels were at war
with the Outlaws.

And they thought
the Sigleys was an Outlaw
Motorcycle target.

But they had bad information.

It was a mistaken identity.

Harry Chakirelis came back,
and they started calling him
the baby killer.

It was a running joke,
and Harry Chakirelis wore this
with some bravado.

Butch thought that was wrong.

Totally wrong.

Somehow he still saw himself
as an honorable man.

And killing women and children
was beneath him

and it was beneath the club.

Butch also identified
the child victim
with his daughter.

He had a young daughter
of the same age.

MUHIC: He was
a stone-cold criminal.

But one of the pictures
I remember seeing of Butch

was with his young daughter
giving him a kiss.

Somewhere deep down
inside of the guy,

he had
some type of conscience.

After the senseless killing
of women and children,

they're not the same
as they used to be.

It just kind of tore it
and they got away
from the brotherhood.

He's thinking about
the repercussions of it.

And not criminal repercussions,

but he's thinking about
the moral repercussions.

He began to question
what he was doing,

and what the Hells Angels
were doing.

But for Butch
to betray the brotherhood
would have been impossible.

He was trapped.

DOYLE: The Cleveland
Hells Angels

moved from a motorcycle club
to a murder cult.

To be a member
of the Hells Angels
in Cleveland,

you had to commit murder.

Not every chapter
was that a requirement.

And the irony of all ironies,
Butch helped create
that requirement.

In many ways,
Butch Crouch was a victim
of his own creation.

It kind of evolved all into
just one big organization
for profit.

And it got away
from the brotherhood.

And now, uh,
it's nothing to kill anybody.

They've perfected it.

Their killing skills,
their intelligence,

they've perfected everything.

MATTER: Someone from Cleveland
had come up and stayed

with the
Minnesota Hells Angels.

They was worried about Butch.

He tells me
"We can't find Butch.

"We haven't seen him
since, uh, USA run."

He's been gone that long.

They was very worried about it,
I should say.

DOYLE: Originally,
Sonny Barger had sent
Butch Crouch to Cleveland.

So he seeks out his mentor,
his hero in Tennessee.

And they speak.

CHRISTIE: Sonny said,

"We're all in it
for ourselves now,
so do what you gotta do."

Sonny tells him
"There is no brotherhood.

"Take the money and run

"because one day,
this is all going to collapse,

"and only those with money
will not be in prison."

His world is shattered.

He's hearing from the leader
of the Hells Angels

that everything
that you thought
you believed in,

all the ideals that you really
pledged your life for

really never existed.

DOYLE: That's the thing
that pushed him over the edge.

Tell the guards to let people in
quick as you can.

We've got to get started.

(TENSE MUSIC PLAYING)

DOYLE: Butch Crouch
turned himself in

and told of the crimes
he had committed
with the Hells Angels.

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

It was devastating.
It was devastating.

It almost started fights
amongst the members

because they had faith in him,
and he betrayed...

the patch
and the people that wore it.

MATTER: Cleveland was
very worried about Butch.

I mean, most of them
would be looking at life.
Everybody would.

You know,
so there was real concern.

We sent an attorney and one of
our members to Washington, DC

to listen for themselves.

And they had him distorted
so you couldn't see his face
and all this.

But it was Clarence Crouch
giving testimony to Congress.

Hells Angel has
a memory like an elephant.

And he never forgets.

If they have
a grievance with somebody,
it never ends.

He testified that drugs,
torture, rape
and kidnapping

are part of everyday life
in the Hells Angels.

That murder
is a requirement
for membership.

Have you abandoned
the Hells Angels now?

-CROUCH: Oh, yes.
-Entirely?

-CROUCH: Oh, yes, completely.
-For life?

CROUCH: Oh, yes.

Butch walked in,
and he gave them everything.

They didn't have a case on him
when he decided to roll.

He just rolled.

And so that's
a pretty powerful statement.

DOYLE: He didn't
rat anybody out.

A rat is a person
who tells on somebody

to get out
of the problems they're in.

He was in no problem.
He told on himself.

He told about the other murders
and he told on the murders
he committed, too.

And he went to prison for that.

He didn't have to.
He could have walked away
from the club

and not said a word.

So he's not a rat.

He's a person
trying to save his soul
somehow, in some way.

When something
of that gravity happens,

it sends ripples and rumors
through the club,

and everybody starts thinking,

"If a guy like him flips,
who in the hell is next?"

CERMAK: This was probably
the most significant
accomplishment

regarding outlaw motorcycle
gangs in the country.

It helped us put together
some criminal prosecutions.

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

I don't know nothing about it,

except later on,
some people got charged with it.

(INTERVIEWER SPEAKING)

Hells Angels
were charged with it.

DOYLE: Butch testified
against Harry Chakirelis
in the Sigley bombing trial,

but the case was pretty strong
without his testimony.

CERMAK: When the Angels
were found...

not guilty,
it was kind of a shock.

There wasn't enough evidence
to proceed with the prosecution
of the case.

DOYLE: We couldn't believe it.

We should have suspected
something was afoot.

CERMAK: The presiding judge
Rule 29'd the case,

which means
that he determined

that there was not
sufficient evidence to convict,

and he made
that decision on his own.

The judge in the case
was James J. McGettrick.

DOYLE: Judge McGettrick
is in a bar a day or two
after this trial,

this verdict.

And he's drinking.

He gets up
and goes to the bathroom.

An ATF agent
who worked undercover a lot,

he goes into the bathroom,
and he makes a comment
to the judge

"Good job you did
with the Hells Angels."

To which the judge responds,

"Well, thank you,
but they haven't paid me

"all the money yet."
(CHUCKLES)

I'd love to say
it was great planning
and investigative work,

but it was
sheer luck and alcohol.

REPORTER: James McGettrick
is running for re-election,

and his indictment for bribery

could not have come
at a worse time for him.

He's been criticized frequently
for dismissing cases.

Further investigation
revealed $6,500 was used
by the Hells Angels

to bribe Judge McGettrick
to fix the Sigley bombing case.

ZANOSKAR: The story came out
about he took a bribe
to make that Rule 29.

But what pissed me off
about that was

they shortchanged the judge.

Somebody shortchanged the judge.

And to this day,
I have no idea who it was.

That would have never
probably been found out

had the judge
not been shortchanged.

DOYLE: Well, going back
to the Polish Women's Hall,

Butch said
they paid off the judges.

Yes, they'd been
doing that all along.

And Judge McGettrick
is the proof.

He stood in court and admitted
he took bribes

to let murderers off.

The Hells Angels
were getting away with murder.

DROBAN: Without Butch,
we may never have
learned any of this.

Butch did reveal the acts
of the Hells Angels.

He did spill their secrets.

He did the right thing.

He's relocated to Texas,

and he lives
a very unassuming life.

He remarries,
and he suffers from ill health.

Always worried
that the Hells Angels

are gonna exact revenge
for his betrayal.

DOYLE: We would
speak on the phone
on a large number of occasions.

We were friendly.

We talked about
where he was at.

He seemed to be
a likable person.

At one point,
we made arrangements
to go fishing.

Authorities have identified
the victims in an apparent
double murder suicide.

85-year-old Vivian Dome
and her son, 61-year-old
Willard Landry,

were found Monday morning
inside their burning home.

73-year-old Paul Dome
was found in a nearby vehicle.

DOYLE:
Before Butch Crouch
came forward,

law enforcement
did not understand the world
of the Hells Angels.

Butch's information
provided a road map,

an overview of how
the Hells Angels operated.

He was the first Hells Angel
to give law enforcement

a complete understanding
of how this criminal
organization operated.

That was his legacy.

DOYLE: When he passed,

I was told there actually
was a party celebrating
his, his demise

by the Hells Angels.

when you heard that he died?

It's over.

He killed his wife
and killed himself,

and put the house on fire.
