How old does this go back?

There are examples
back in medieval times.

We are looking for connections
to Oak Island here in Italy.

-PETER: Oh, wow.
-DOUG: Templars built
this castle?

RICK:
Those are symbols
we have on Oak Island.

DOUG:
So this is connected
with Nolan's Cross.

CORJAN:
This would have been
an ideal hideout.

-JACQUO: There we are, guys.
-RICK: Wow. Look at that.

CORJAN:
They took their treasure here

on their way up to Oak Island.

Oh, wow. That is a lot.

NARRATOR:
There is an island
in the North Atlantic

where people have been looking
for an incredible treasure

for more than 200 years.

So far, they have found
a stone slab

with strange symbols
carved into it,

man-made workings
that date to medieval times,

and a lead cross whose origin

may be connected
to the Knights Templar.

To date, six men have died

trying to solve the mystery.

And according to legend,
one more

will have to die before
the treasure can be found.

MARTY:
All right, so,
the objective here is

find the treasure,
to find where

the metals in the water
are coming from.

-Correct? Okay.
-Yeah.

NARRATOR:
Another chilly fall season

has descended upon Oak Island.

But for brothers Rick
and Marty Lagina and their team,

hope remains high that
they still have time this year

to make a discovery
in the Money Pit area

that could finally solve

a 229-year-old treasure mystery.

We have locations
that you and Fred have picked?

-Correct?
-Yeah. Fred and I have
talked it over.

And we do know as well
that this is where

we had some of
the highest metal results.

NARRATOR:
Just two weeks ago,
the team believed

that they were close
to a major breakthrough

as representatives from
Dumas Contracting Limited

began a lateral
probe-drilling operation

to explore a seven-foot-high,
dilapidated tunnel

that was discovered
some 106 feet deep,

just below the Garden Shaft.

A tunnel that runs due west
towards an area dubbed

the "Baby Blob," where
geoscientist Dr. Ian Spooner

and his colleague,
Dr. Fred Michel,

detected high trace evidence
of gold and silver

during previous
groundwater tests.

NARRATOR:
However, shortly after

the probe-drilling operation
began...

...the Garden Shaft suddenly
flooded with salt water,

forcing the team
to abandon the operation,

and speculate that
they had encountered

one of the legendary
flood tunnels

which have thwarted
treasure hunters

for more than two centuries.

So, we've got locations
based on the work

no longer horizontally drill

at the bottom
of the Garden Shaft

to look for the precious
metals that have been detected

potential treasure targets

80 and 120 feet,

which the team will investigate

by core-drilling
from the surface.

information connecting

that there is a substantial mass
of precious metal

are beginning a research trip
to investigate

the possible origins of

the 229-year-old mystery.

EMILIANO:
Welcome to Morimondo.

This is the Cistercian Abbey

of this little town.

NARRATOR: Today,
researcher Emiliano Sacchetti

and archeoastronomer
Professor Adriano Gaspani

have arranged for the team
to visit Morimondo Abbey,

the site of a monastery
that was established

by Cistercian monks
back in the 12th century.

We decided to start from here
because Cistercians

were among the greatest
builders of the Middle Ages.

And according
to Professor Gaspani's theory,

whoever built the Nolan's Cross

was close
to some monastic circles.

So, they knew
the sacred geometry.

-Oh.
-Oh, wow.

NARRATOR:
According to the research

of Professor Gaspani,

three megalithic
stone formations

that have been discovered
on the surface of Oak Island,

known as Nolan's Cross,

the five pyramid-shaped
stone piles on Lot 15,

and the stone triangle that once
stood on the south shore

were constructed based on
alignments with stars

in the night sky
back in the 13th century

by members of
the Knights Templar,

the Christian military order
that some believe

smuggled priceless
religious treasures from Europe

to Oak Island as much
as eight centuries ago.

I am convinced
that Nolan's Cross

may have been built by

a Knight Templar,
or by a Cistercian monk.

ALEX:
Mm-hmm.

So we are looking
for connections to Oak Island.

We're looking for
the possibility of a connection

to the Knights Templar,
and we might see that here?

NARRATOR: The Order
of Cistercians was founded

in 1098 and constructed
numerous abbeys across Europe,

including the Morimondo Abbey
in the late 12th century.

Known for advancements
in the sciences,

including architecture,
engineering and astronomy,

the Cistercians recorded their
knowledge in decorated texts

known
as illuminated manuscripts.

The order was also
closely connected

to the Knights Templar,

whom Professor Gaspani believes

may have used abbeys
such as this one in Morimondo

to not only share
secretive knowledge,

but also smuggle their sacred
treasures across Europe

before transporting
them to North America.

Before we get into the church,

I would like
to show you something.

RICK:
The breadth of knowledge
that Professor Gaspani has

is integral to this process.

And he said
there was indeed a very

profound connection between
Templars and Cistercian monks.

And the hope is
there'll be a connection

between that knowledge
and perhaps

a voyage to the New World.

And of course,
to the island in particular.

EMILIANO:
So, on top of the facade,

you can see
some ceramic vessels?

-Oh, yes.
-Yeah.

EMILIANO:
And if you pay attention,
on the left side,

there is a group of five.

Two have

very specific symbolism.

I see it.

-I see a couple
of four-dot crosses.
-EMILIANO: Yeah.

DOUG: We have
the four-dot cross carved

on the H+O Stone on Oak Island.

There it is.

DOUG:
I see a four-dot cross.

At a 12th century Cistercian
abbey in Morimondo, Italy,

Rick Lagina and members
of the team

have just found
a symbol known to be

connected to the Knights Templar

that has also been found
on Oak Island.

ALEX:
The H+O stone, we've only seen

the photographs,
but it's carved deeply.

Right.

NARRATOR:
Discovered on the northern shore

of Oak Island back in the 1920s,

the so-called H+O Stone,

which featured a cross
surrounded by four dots,

was part of a larger boulder

that had been detonated
by searchers

who mistakenly believed

that it marked the location
of buried treasure.

Is it possible
that the team has found

an important clue
outside of Morimondo Abbey

that offers more evidence
connecting the Knights Templar

to the Oak Island mystery?

So what about getting into
the church and taking a look?

-ALEX: Yep.
-Yeah, that'd be great.

RICK: The H+O stone, it's
an integral part of the story.

And if it was meaningful
to the people

who were here,
i.e., the Cistercians

and perhaps the Templars...

me, personally, I think it's
too ubiquitous a symbol for it

and too iconic to Oak Island
for us to ignore it.

-Wow.
-Oh, wow.

ALEX:
Look at this.
I did not expect this.

-PETER: Yeah.
-ALEX: Wow. Yeah, it's...

It's stunning.

EMILIANO:
So, this is it. 60 meters by 13.

So, very long and narrow.

Eight massive pillars
on each side.

But, let-let's just spread out

and take a look.

ALEX:
It's interesting
that we see this

four-dot cross
on the H+O Stone, which we

seem to see at
a lot of Templar sites,

which is very interesting.

The church there has several

really significant orientations

and markings, and I'm excited
to find out more.

You see the Templar cross?

DOUG:
Oh, yeah.

ALEX:
I'm hopeful that we will

be able to learn something,

or at least see
some symbols here

that could be really important

to help us figure out

what's going on on Oak Island.

Okay. I think it's time to go

-to the scriptorium.
-ALEX: Okay.

I'm really looking forward
to show it to you guys.

The scriptorium was a place
where the monks

used to study,

copy, illuminate

the manuscript
that were recording

the knowledge of the times.

So, this is the-the scriptorium,

and here in this place

there were at least ten monks

working, copying manuscript,
studying them.

And, as you can see,

it's beautifully decorated.

These paintings are actually

made by Cistercian monks.

It's not a later addition.

And we're talking
around the mid-13th century.

ALEX:
Wow.

Right over
your shoulder there...

-EMILIANO: Y-You mean this one?
-ALEX: Yep.

We saw that in
the Templar prison in Domme.

We did.

-What it reminds you?
-Well, the tree of life.

Yeah?

NARRATOR:
A painted depiction

of the tree of life?

The sacred religious symbol

believed by many
to represent a pathway to God?

JERRY:
I think it's possible

that this might have
been inspired

by the Kabbalistic
tree of life.

NARRATOR:
In 2017, Rick,

Alex, and Peter visited

a 14th-century prison
in Domme, France,

where members
of the Templar order

had been incarcerated in 1307

by King Philip IV
on charges of heresy.

However, some believe that

the true reason
for the Templar persecution

was for the Catholic Church

to confiscate
the religious treasures

that they possessed,

which may have included
the Ark of the Covenant.

Much of the Templar treasure
has never been found.

NARRATOR:
But, curiously,

Nolan's Cross on Oak Island,

which Professor Gaspani
believes was created

by Templar Knights
around 1200 AD,

has also been thought by some

to represent the tree of life.

And on the opposite side
of the pillar,

there is another four-dot cross.

What we learned last year
is that this cross

marks a special place.

The scriptorium, for a monk,

-it was a special place.
-ALEX: Mm-hmm.

RICK: I wonder if
the work that was done here

was meant to be so secret
and so...

precious that

only few were allowed

the actual information.

Yeah.

EMILIANO:
The Templars, they were

bringing back

the knowledge from the Holy Land

and put into practice

what they have learned through
the help of the Cistercians.

The only reason
why I ask that question,

Emiliano, is because, I mean,

when I look at the cross there,

I see oak leaves.

If you're bringing information
back from foreign lands,

part of that information
is gonna be knowledge

of, um, exotic plants.

DOUG:
Are you envisioning

a 13th-century Cistercian scribe

copying information
about activities on Oak Island?

Yeah, I certainly believe that

what was done on Oak Island

would be preserved
within Templar hierarchy.

ALEX:
Yeah. I think

if there was somebody
with knowledge of the New World,

this is a plausible way

for that information
to be disseminated.

But we're still looking
for the proof of that.

As this trip ensues,
we may find something

that is even more definitive.

We would certainly love
to-to go there

and learn more
of what we learned today.

RICK:

The following day,
on Oak Island,

as preparations continue

for the new
core-drilling operation

near the Baby Blob,

in the northern region of Lot 5,

located on the western side
of the island...

LAIRD:
I think it's gonna be
really important to

-carefully excavate in here.
-Yeah.

So, it means that the edge
of the feature

goes at least over here.

NARRATOR:
...archaeologists Laird Niven,

Helen Sheldon,

and Moya MacDonald

continue investigating
two mysterious stone foundations

that they believe
were both purposely buried

more than two centuries ago.

In the foundation
nearest to the shore,

the team has not only uncovered
a concrete-like substance

and blue clay,

which have also been found

deep underground
in the Money Pit area,

but also
a 14th-century lead disc,

which may be related
to the possible Templar cross

that was uncovered
at Smith's Cove

back in 2017.

While in the feature located
several yards to the south,

an iron spike
was recently unearthed

that archaeometallurgist
Emma Culligan has found

to potentially date back
more than 800 years.

MOYA:
What else shall I find? (sighs)

NARRATOR:
Now, the team is looking
for additional clues

at both sites

in the hopes of determining

when they originated

and just who created them.

Hmm.

We don't find a lot
of white metal buttons.

But it's a strange pattern.

On Lot 5, located
on the western side

of Oak Island,
archaeologist Moya MacDonald

has just made
a curious discovery

while investigating the stone
foundation near the shoreline.

Yeah. It's a,
it's an odd pattern.

I've never seen it before.

It's almost like
an asymmetrical spiderweb.

And you can see, on the reverse,
where the shank was attached.

So, it's definitely a button.

-LAIRD: It sure looks old.
-HELEN: It does.

-MOYA: Yeah.
-Where was that?

It was in the northeast corner.

LAIRD:
The artifacts that are coming
out are really surprising to me,

and the building
is completely unusual.

This may have been
an industrial structure,

something other than a house.

But the fact that
it's on Oak Island

adds to the mystery around it,

and, hopefully,
the button can tell us

who was doing what and when.

LAIRD:
It's really fragile
for a button.

Yeah, I think
we'll get that to Emma.

of the team are meeting
once again

with archaeoastronomer

Professor Adriano Gaspani,
his interpreter

Marzia Sebastiani,

and researcher

at Bianzano Castle.

As you will see,
there are some very close links

to the Knights Templar
here in this castle.

Uh, there's also a close link
to Nolan's Cross.

-Huh. Oh.
-Oh.

NARRATOR:
Dating back to the 13th century,

Bianzano Castle is believed
by many religious scholars

to have once served
as the Italian headquarters

for the order
of the Knights Templar.

It is also believed by some

to have been one of the places

where the Templars may have
safeguarded their treasures

as they worked
to transport them

across Europe and, finally,
to North America.

-Mm.
-And the Templars
built this castle?

Mm-hmm.

Hmm.

So, this is a structure
built about the same time

as Nolan's Cross?

MARZIA: Nolan's Cross has
a similar alignment

to the Cygnus constellation.

And, in this case as well,

the external walls have

a configuration,
which is perfectly aligned

with the rise and the set

of the Cygnus constellation.

-I see.
-MARZIA: And we have

the external walls
pointing in the direction

of the Arcturus star,

which is the case
with Nolan's Cross as well.

So, basically, we have
the same configuration

that you have
with Nolan's Cross.

It's the same stars that are
being used as a reference.

NARRATOR:
One of the key reasons
that Professor Gaspani

chose to show this site
to Rick and the team

is that,
according to his research,

the castle was constructed
based on alignments

with specific stars
in the constellation

known as Cygnus,
just like the design

for Nolan's Cross on Oak Island.

-That's what we struggle with.
-ALEX: Yes.

As Gaspani said, uh,
Templars were here,

and we can infer that,

also, from the symbolism
that is inside the castle.

And then, once we're in,
we will take a look at it.

-RICK: Great.
-DOUG: Absolutely. Lead the way.

RICK:
Three things align, right?

The date of Bianzano Castle
construction

and Nolan's Cross construction

and also, that,
that timeline aligns perfectly

with the-the rise
of what we'll call Templarism.

If there was a reason
to safeguard some treasure,

a case is being built that,
partly through these alignments,

that, perhaps, something
was done, uh, in North America.

So, this is the main entrance,
and, as you can see,

it's full of different symbols.

-ALEX: Yeah.
-RICK: Look at this.

EMILIANO:
This symbolism refers,

in some parts, to the Templars.

DOUG:
I actually see something

in that fresco that I recognize
from Nova Scotia, I think.

-EMILIANO: What is it?
-Right here.

-DOUG: See this
eight-pointed star here?
-Yeah. Yeah.

ALEX:
Is there a significance

to that symbol, that shape?

That's like
the Bedford Barren petroglyph.

Yes.

NARRATOR:
In 2014,

Rick, Marty and Craig Tester

saw a mysterious
eight-pointed star

carved into a rock
in the Bedford Barrens,

located some 40 miles
northeast of Oak Island.

The symbol holds
spiritual significance

to the indigenous Mi'kmaw
people of Nova Scotia

and it is believed by some

that the Mi'kmaw adopted it
from the Templar order

after the two cultures
made contact

back in the 14th century.

DOUG:
So, we find it here
in Northern Italy

and we find it in Nova Scotia?

RICK:
That, maybe, was
Old-World information

that had come to Nova Scotia.

NARRATOR:
Is it possible that Doug Crowell

has found additional evidence
at Bianzano Castle

that supports the theory

that members
of the Knights Templar

brought their symbology
to North America?

If so, could it have been
connected to a secret mission

to hide their sacred treasures
on Oak Island?

RICK:
Well, when you start to look,
it's everywhere.

it just repeats everywhere.

But the best is yet to come,

because Professor Gaspani has
something he wants to show you.

In Bianzano, Italy,

Rick Lagina and other members
of the Oak Island team

are meeting with researcher
Emiliano Sacchetti

and Professor Adriano Gaspani

at a 13th-century fortress
that once served

as a headquarters
for the Knights Templar.

This might be very revealing.

So, I look forward

to what Professor Gaspani
has to show us.

EMILIANO:
I shared with Professor Gaspani

the Cremona Document.

I asked him to think
about the devices

described
in the Cremona Document,

with a specific focus
on the Abetor.

NARRATOR:
In 2016,

Rick's friend, the late author
and researcher Zena Halpern,

gave him and Doug Crowell a copy
of the "Cremona Document,"

which had reportedly been
discovered in a medieval church

in the town of Cremona, Italy,
back in the 1970s.

Believed to have been coauthored
by a 12th-century Templar knight

named Ralph de Sudeley,

the Cremona Document contained
reported first-hand testimony

that the Templars did, in fact,

recover priceless
religious treasures

beneath the Temple
of King Solomon in Jerusalem.

Also described
in the document was a device

believed to be known
as an Abetor, which was designed

to track the positions of stars
in the night sky

for the purpose of not only
constructing buildings

but also for navigation
on the high seas.

So, Professor Gaspani did
his homeworks... (chuckles)

...and he decided
to build his own Abetor.

Oh, really?

Wow.

DOUG:
Wow. Nice work.

Beautiful.

MARZIA:
So, with such a tool,

you can cross the Atlantic
and stick,

uh, to the prescribed,
uh, route.

RICK:
We have found, on the island,

constructs from
the period of 1200.

So, you would need
a device such as this

in order to make certain

that you were secure
in the knowledge

that you could sail
back and forth.

DOUG:
A navigational device

may have brought them
across the Atlantic,

and utilizing the science

and the technology
they had with them--

say, this device--
to build a construct

-on Oak Island...
-Mm-hmm.

...then something like this
could have accomplished that.

It al-- it almost
certainly could have.

be looking at a type of device

that not only helped
in the transport

of a vast treasure
from Europe to Oak Island,

the analysis

of the ornate metal button
that was found

in the large stone foundation
on Lot 5 just one day ago.

So, I did a couple of map scans.

And so, this layer right here
is highlighted in yellow,

which is the lead.

And then, the base metal
is the tin content.

NARRATOR:
Earlier this morning,

Emma scanned the button using
the SkyScan 1273 CT scanner,

a device which emits
X-ray radiation

to produce a three-dimensional
image of its finer details.

She also examined it

using the X-ray fluorescence
spectrometer, or XRF,

which uses gamma rays
to determine the elements

that make up
the object's composition.

Now we understand it to be

-a lead-coated tin button.
-MARTY: Hmm.

Very few made of lead.

EMMA:
Which makes it...

-Unique.
-Yeah. (laughs softly)

LAIRD:
It's a cast button,

so it's been cast in place.

It's a sunburst design.

MARTY:
What about status?

Who would wear such a thing?

-Well, I mean,
it-it's decorated.
-Mm-hmm.

LAIRD:
That elevates the status
of a button...

-Right.
-...right away.

But how-how old
does this style go back?

LAIRD:
The only equivalents

I can find to it...

...date from, like,
1600 to 1700.

And that's the latest.

-(laughs): No way.
-Mm-hmm.

MARTY:
Really? What's the earliest?

LAIRD:
The earliest,

there are examples
back in medieval times.

MARTY:
Well, how about that?

LAIRD: It's a design
that dates from medieval

into the 1700s.

JACK:
You-you said
some of these buttons

go back to medieval times?

1300s.

-Well, how about that, Laird?
-Yeah.

NARRATOR:
In the Oak Island laboratory,

archaeologist Laird Niven

and archaeometallurgist
Emma Culligan have just informed

that a button
featuring a star design,

which was discovered one day ago
in the stone foundation

near the shoreline of Lot 5,

could date back
more than four centuries prior

to the discovery
of the Money Pit.

Isn't this sort of a game
changer for that, for that site?

-That's, that's what I feel.

Well, if this does go back
to medieval periods,

the guys are in Europe
right now, investigating

on Nolan's Cross.

And he seems to think that
that dated back to the 1200s.

So this might be more data

showing us
that people were here.

Lot 5 is still a mystery.

And it seems like things

don't fit real well
for one period of occupation.

I would like
to get to the very bottom

of that structure.
I want to know

when that thing
was first constructed.

who, along with his
research partner Chris Morford,

recently published
The Jerusalem Files--

a book describing how
members of the Knights Templar

may have transported
their sacred treasures,

including the Golden Menorah
from King Solomon's Temple,

to Oak Island
more than 700 years ago.

At the end of the 12th century,
people started to dig

these quarries underground.

Vast labyrinths.

The people
who-who made these quarries,

they might have had connections
with the Templar order.

Corjan has arranged

for the team to explore

the 12th-century
Caestert stone quarry.

It is one of the locations
where he believes

the Templar order may have
hidden their valuables

as they made their way
across Europe

before ultimately
transporting them to Oak Island.

This would've been an ideal
hideout if you were on the run.

Just 15 meter,
literally under our feet,

we have what we believe are, uh,

drawings by the Knights Templar

with a lot of symbols

that you are going
to recognize from Oak Island.

between the 12th
and 16th centuries,

the Caestert stone quarry

was used to mine limestone
for the construction

of Catholic churches and abbeys
throughout the region.

CORJAN: Uh, we do have
an entrance or call it a hole.

So, go all the way down.

ALEX: Okay.
That should be no problem.

-Can I have
you take that, buddy?

Today, the quarry consists

of several thousand
hand-carved tunnels,

totaling 15 miles
of underground passageways

between the Netherlands
and Belgium.

CORJAN:
Okay. This way.

ALEX:
Wow.

Wow. Look at that.

-Looks like the inside of
a pyramid, doesn't it?
-ALEX: Yeah.

RICK: Looks...
It almost looks otherworldly.

-Doesn't it?

invite you to look up.

Oh, wow.

That's extensive.

We have a four-dot cross there.

-In the corner.
-ALEX: Oh, yeah.

CORJAN: Which we've seen
in Italy, in Portugal.

Here now and,
of course, on Oak Island.

Look, you can't deny
where we have found it,

from place to place to place

that's associated almost
irrefutably with Templars.

If we walk up here, there's some

very interesting stuff
on the side of the wall.

-JACQUO: Follow me.

RICK:
When you know of a safe place,

you're gonna utilize it.

Not only to keep
themselves safe,

but more importantly,
to keep their beliefs safe.

And then you see represented
high in this cave system

some of the important
representations

of those beliefs.

Oh. Look at that.

I-I became almost childlike
in that moment.

I-I think it, it's impactful.

That is a lot.

We have a cross,
uh, gallery here.

And this is the only, uh,
cross-shaped gallery

in this part of the system.

So I like to think
that they picked this place

because of the cross shape.

CORJAN:
So, this symbol here

looks suspiciously
like a menorah.

It does.

On the other side here,
circle and dot.

ALEX:
Yep.

Over here, four-dot cross.

RICK:
That's remarkable.

CORJAN: Perhaps they left
their breadcrumbs

on the ceiling.

Mm-hmm.

CORJAN: Maybe they took
their treasure here

on their way up north.

PETER:
Incredible.

CORJAN: Maybe, you know,
they took their treasure here.

Let's not forget we have,
you know, the circle and dot,

the four-dot cross that you have

-on the H+O stone on Oak Island.
-Mm-hmm.

CORJAN: So, perhaps,
you know, that's also, uh,

an indication... (stammers)
...of the destination.

At the Caestert stone quarry--

a 12th-century tunnel system
in the Netherlands,

where members
of the Knights Templar

on the so-called H+O stone,

If they put these up there,
they're saying something.

Then their beliefs
are encapsulated within...

the context of a treasure.

Something that was
incredibly important to them.

I think you're
seeing that up there.

My belief is that whatever
happened on Oak Island

is an Old World treasure wrapped
up in an Old World mystery.

I think what we're seeing is

a possible route
to the New World.

You flee suppression in France,

you find your way to the ocean

and you make your way
to the New World.

Along the way you seek shelter
with a group of people

who could easily
hide you in here.

Yeah. Yeah.

NARRATOR: Is it possible,
as Corjan Mol believes,

that members
of the Knights Templar

once stored
their priceless treasures

in the Caestert stone quarry
before ultimately taking them

across the Atlantic Ocean
to Oak Island?

If you see same symbols
here in the Old World

that you see in the New World,
specifically on Oak Island

and in close proximity
to Oak Island,

is it possible it's just random?

I personally think not.

Hopefully, that will
be impactful in the near future.

They weren't just
running for their freedom.

They were running
to protect something.

And what they were running
to protect

perhaps was with them,

i.e. a treasure.

There's a message
within each of these symbols

and we need to understand
what they're trying to tell us.

Maybe part of that answer
is in Valkenburg,

where we have a, uh,
Templar catacomb.

I think we should take
a look there, too.

That would be great.
