historical importance

Most likely roman.

Was first discovered in 1795,

begley found an artifact

That gary quickly stuck
right in his top pocket.

this isn't a rock...

like, little markings on it.

instincts about his finds

Right now, this is the ct scan.

It's an
interesting-looking piece.

The edges are strange.

It looks like
whatever the metal is,

Was cut with shears.

It had an
extremely high tin content,

Which makes it bronze.

Along with a really
high arsenic content,

Which makes it
an arsenical bronze

And that stands out to me.

The initial scientific analysis

Conducted on the possible
coin hinted that its origin

Must long predate the
discovery of the money pit.

So, anything with, like,
a high arsenic content

Would affect your
nervous system.

So, there was this long
period of just it phasing out

And because it is
a phased-out metal,

It is not a modern
metal by any means.

16th century onwards,
it's non-existent.

They stopped making
this type of metal...

So, it would have

How old is it?

It's 500 years old, at least.

To date it, it's definitely
that period or earlier.

It's absolutely
brilliant news, mate.

I mean, this is fantastic.

The discovery of a
believed barter token

That's at least 500 years old

Shows once again that
the oak island mystery

Could go back further than
anyone ever thought possible.

Believe it or not,
it's not even close

To the potential age of the
next top find on our countdown.

The lot 8 copper artifact.

Staying focused on
the western side of the island,

moved over to lot 8,

Hoping to find
more critical clues.

Look at the color on

What activities were
conducted on lot 8.

need to use science

To determine whether or not
there's some sort of connection

Between all of these artifacts.

Would we like
them to tell a story?

Yes, we would.

The strange artifact
featured a number of curious symbols

That no one on the
team could identify,

And was clearly
another candidate

For immediate lab analysis.

- The scan is done.
- Whoa.

You'll see the copper
alloy's way up there.

It's 95% copper.

So, if you look at
the iron component,

It's almost as
equal as the zinc.

And it is pretty small levels.

So, it could be old.

Boom, baby!

Emma's suspicions

About the copper artifact

Were intriguing to rick
and the rest of the team.

Well, we're very
interested in the reports

That were sent on to you
and what you make of them.

It was definitely illuminating.

But no one was
prepared for the analysis

Of renowned archaeologist
dr. Ed barnhart.

You have 95%
copper and just 5% zinc

And about .5 lead,
says the report,

Which means that it's brass.

That's interesting, because
most brass comes from europe.

- Really?
- Yep.

The possibilities of such an
object coming to your island

Really increase
starting in the 1500s,

But it could be some
sort of older object.

The other possibility
is the vikings.

We know they came
over around 1000.

And we know they plated
a lot of things with brass.

are very interesting

That there were early
voyages to the new world,

something here to oak island.

The real key is connecting
those data points.

of the worst-smelling

Of course, I'm talking about
the triangle-shaped swamp.

And it has revealed
secrets that underscore

answers to this mystery

May not only lie
buried in the money pit.

The stone ramp.

to start making a mess?

Well, I hope it's a good mess.

After running a
magnetometer survey last year,

Rick, marty and the team
began excavating a spot

Near the northeastern
region of the swamp

In search of a large metallic
target that was detected.

A target located right between

Two of the most
incredible discoveries

Previously made by the team.

I'm talking about the
massive stone-paved area

In the middle of the swamp,

Which has been dated to 1200 ad.

Yes, you heard me right.

And a stone pathway

Running along the
eastern border of the bog

That is believed to have been
made almost 300 years later.

Stay with me, now.

This is going to get
really interesting.

Digging in the
swamp is incredibly difficult.

But what is exciting about it

Is the possibilities
that it presents.

Right there. Something hard.

The bucket going across
here is hitting something solid.

You can hear it all the way.

What is that?

I'm not sure,

But I think there's all
rocks underneath there.

But I think they're
coming, they're sloping up.

Yeah.
That's a lot of cobble.

The team didn't
find any metal objects.

But instead, they
uncovered a stone ramp.

A ramp that is believed
to have been made

At the same time as
the 500-year-old pathway

In order to connect with
the 800-year-old paved area.

So, what could that mean?

In 1969, the late
oak island landowner

And treasure hunting
legend fred nolan

Suspected there was more
than meets the eye to the swamp.

So, he drained it.

Incredibly, he found numerous
pieces of ancient ships.

This made him
believe that oak island

Was once two islands and
that some secretive organization

Joined them together by
creating the triangle-shaped swamp

To keep something
hidden in plain sight.

Wow!

It's quite
impressive though, isn't it?

It's incredibly impressive.

Stand right there and you'll
get a real good perspective.

Unbelievable.

That is amazing.

Hey, marty. How do you
like your swamp expressway?

- This is really cool.
- Yeah.

I mean, this is mondo cool.

It's impressive.

T-that looks exactly
like an old roman road.

It's possible.

Well, over the
past several years,

The team has pretty
much proven fred's theory

By unearthing an
incredible stone road

In the southeast corner...

That's beautiful, actually.

- It looks like a handrail.
- Or the top of some balusters.

- Yeah. The top of your ship, right around your rail, right?

More pieces
of ancient sailing vessels

Dating between the
7th and 18th centuries...

Hey, guys. Check that out.

And even parts of potentially

15th-century cargo barrels.

If the ramp ties into
the paved area in the swamp,

This area continues
to be very interesting.

So, I don't know
what it was used for,

But we hope we
can find the answer.

The ramp is coming
from the paved area,

Which dates to 1200.

And the ramp leading
from it is 1495 to 1656.

So, does that mean there
were successive attempts

To construct something,
to conduct some enterprise

And that it was
done over centuries?

Right now, that's the
only plausible explanation.

So, was the oak island
mystery actually connected

To a multi-generational
conspiracy?

And if so, who had the
knowledge, the resources

And the treasure
to carry it out?

All right, so the first marking

That we wanted to show
you guys is over here.

Wow.

This one has been here

For a very long time.

In the middle of the year,

Researcher corjan
mol accompanied

Rick and charles
barkhouse to inspect

Some mysterious
carvings less than an hour

From oak island in the
city of liverpool, nova scotia.

We were told this
might be a british broadhead,

But we don't know.

We just know it's been
here for a really long time.

Although local property
owners isaac rafuse and nick fralic

Thought one of the carvings
might be from the 18 century

And related to
the british military...

Doesn't the broadhead
mark come like that?

- You know what I mean? It comes to a point.
- Yeah.

After rick
questioned that notion,

Corjan offered a much
different suggestion

For what it actually might be.

The broadheads
were put on everything

Basically that the
king, purchased.

So, it could be
weapons, equipment,

They put it on trees if they
wanted to use them for ships,

But never on rock.

I think that's unlikely.

To me this looks like what
we call a "goose paw" in europe.

And if that's what it is,

That would be something because

That is the mark of the masons

For the knights templar,
in medieval europe.

As many acorns know,

One of the most incredible
theories that some researchers,

Such as corjan mol,
have come to believe

Is that the oak island
mystery is directly connected

To the medieval order
of the knights templar.

Formed in the 12th century

And originally
headquartered in jerusalem,

The templars
established strongholds

All across the middle
east and europe

Between the 12th
and 16th centuries

And amassed a vast treasure,

Which some believe included
priceless religious objects.

The order was condemned
by the catholic church

And the king of France in 1307.

However, many templars are
believed to have escaped europe

And the bulk of
their fabled treasure

Has never been found.

There's no
question that oak island

Was not the singular obsession

Of-of people traveling from
the old world to the new world.

That's pretty cool.

So, if there's
anything within the province

That indicates pre-columbian
visitation to the new world,

It's, it's of interest to us.

And, I think these
carvings might represent that.

We have something that's
carved by the human hand

In a very unique place

And it may have codes
or ciphers within it.

- Yeah.

It's incredible
what it may represent.

Like the many searchers who
came to oak island before them,

Rick, marty and their team
have made amazing discoveries

In the money pit area.

And we'll be reviewing
some of those later.

But when it comes to
making great discoveries

All across the island,

This team stands apart
from its predecessors.

And that brings us to the

On our countdown.

The well of silver secrets.

Years ago, dan blankenship and I

Were wandering over by lot 26.

Came across a well.

No ice on it and it
was the dead of winter,

Freezing cold, way below zero.

And we thought, "that's curious,

Why is there no
ice on this well?"

Located more than a
half a mile from the money pit,

Lot 26 has been an
area of high interest

To the team for years.

That's largely because it
once belonged to samuel ball,

A man who came to oak
island in the late 18th century

As a humble cabbage farmer,

But somehow ended up

As one of the richest
landowners in nova scotia.

So, when rick noticed
that the well on lot 26

Would never freeze during
the harsh north atlantic winters,

He wondered if it
might contain secrets

That would shed light on
mr. Ball's mysterious good fortune.

So, I'm going to
get this corer set up.

- Okay.
- In the hopes of determining

How old it might be

And if it contained
anything out of the ordinary...

I can feel the
bottom right there.

Geoscientist
dr. Ian spooner,

Along with
archaeologist laird niven,

Collected and tested
samples of water,

As well as organic materials.

Excellent.

There we go. That's
a pretty good core.

I'll turn it over to dr. Spooner

And let him describe the
core and then the results.

What we got out of it, I think,
was completely unexpected.

So, here's the core.

Now, you can see
that there's twigs in it,

There's little stones that
might have fallen in it.

So, I dated that little brown
piece of wood at the bottom.

Which I will say,
this is very important,

Was probably not in the mud
but was probably in the dirt

At the bottom of the well.

So, it's more likely
associated with construction,

And how I know that
is that it sort of went

Below the mud in the core.

- Okay.
- And this is where it really,

Really got interesting.

The date I got on
the twig at the bottom

Was 1028 to 1172.

This is brilliant.

Yeah.

It's turning out to be

A pretty interesting
area, right?

Yeah.

After determining that the well

Might be as old, or even older,

Than the paved
area in the swamp,

Laird oversaw a
methodical excavation,

And was surprised to find out

That it was a much
more extensive feature.

So, we got samples of
the water from the well.

But no one was prepared
for what dr. Spooner found

After analyzing the water
samples that they collected.

It was one of
our only silver hits

Outside of the money pit.

Well done.

Is it possible that
this well is in an area

That has real treasure?

We have dr. Spooner's
water sample,

Which showed an
elevated level of silver.

Hopefully, you know, some
organic material can be found

That can be carbon-dated.

Once you have those
answers, you can move forward.

The source of that silver
remains a mystery, for now.

But if there really is treasure
hidden deep inside that well,

It might not be the only

Hidden cache of
valuables on oak island.

In a number of previously
drilled boreholes

All across the money pit area.

We sent in a few samples
from the monitoring wells,

And those have
been from two depths:

Around the 110 and then
around the 150 intervals.

With the help of
hydrogeologist dr. Fred michel,

Dr. Spooner made one
of the greatest potential

Breakthroughs yet towards
finding the fabled treasure.

The area in pink there

Would be exactly
where the gold is.

The 80-to-110-foot area

Is the area that
this is coming from.

Tested water samples

W-what are the dimensions?

- It's about 20 feet by 20 feet.

this is geological.

So, if it's not natural,

If it's man-deposited,

Then a variety of objects

That are being buried
that contain those metals.

Who knows how many
different types of metals

Are mixed into a
potential treasure chest?

The results are
excellent in that they do indicate

Some sort of large
grouping of metallic objects

That could be
highly significant.

And these other metals,
they would almost always

Be found in conjunction
with gold and silver.

Any sort of treasure cache

Located on the western
side of the island.

These four acres
were formerly owned

By the late treasure hunter
and researcher robert young,

Who passed away in 2020.

However, during the
previous two decades,

He reportedly made a number
of important discoveries.

He found coins.
He found buttons.

He found other artifacts.

Everything that we
have found, he found.

It's exciting.

We know there have been some
very interesting finds on lot 5.

As hopeful as they
were to find meaningful clues

It's just too rough

it's either roman,

It could be even be byzantine,

But I'm thinking

Based on what I'm
seeing on the coin,

I mean, I-I see
roman-style characters.

The style is definitely
from 300 bc to 500, 600 ad.

- No way.
- Yeah.

What on earth would
that be doing here?

Of all the ancient discoveries

The team has made
over the past decade,

A roman coin is certainly
one for the history books.

Not just for oak island history,

But for all of north america.

The lot 5 barter token.

to dig some history up?

Always.

Several weeks after rick
and gary went "roman" around lot 5,

Gary returned with jack begley

And conducted a search near
a mysterious stone depression

That, incredibly, has
a 13-foot diameter...

Just like the
reported description

Of the original money pit.

Okay, mate.

It's still in there.

Try and find it.

It's in my hand.

Let's see what we've got.

- That looks like an old coin.
- Yeah. You see that?

That nice and round shape?

Please, please,
please be a coin.

I'm gonna pull it out.

Look how round it is.

It's lead!

A lead barter
token, to be exact.

But unlike the barter token

Found earlier in
the year on lot 7,

This one could be submitted

For a specialized
form of lead analysis.

Dr. Mcfarlane, I know
you did ablation on this.

Yeah. This was a pretty
easy object to ablate

Because it was flat,
you know, which is good.

Chemist
dr. Chris mcfarlane

Conducted laser
ablation on the artifact.

This process begins by
using a high-powered laser

To collect microscopic
samples from lead objects.

These samples are then
analyzed for isotope values,

Which can actually
help determine

Not only the age
of the artifacts,

But also the geographic region

Where they originated.

The biggest result
is that, isotopically,

It looks very similar to...

The cross.

No way!

I wasn't expecting that.

I was expecting that.

The lot 5 barter
token was a near match

To the lead cross that was
discovered by rick and gary

At smith's cove back in 2017.

This means that both
originated during the 14th century

And in a region
of southern France

That once served as a
stronghold for the knights templar.

And incidentally,
that cross design

Was also identical to a man-made
cave system in osimo, Italy

That rick and members
of the team visited in 2022.

Caves that were used by
members of the knights templar

Between the 12th
and 14th centuries

And in a region that
was also once part

Of the roman empire.

What's really intriguing, too,

Is we've looked for

Representations of the cross

And we've only seen one

In a very early cave
system in osimo, Italy,

And one on the walls of
domme prison in France,

Where the templars
were imprisoned.

Now that this scalloped disc

Is a friend of the cross,

I mean, one could,

On some level,
associate the two.

Yeah.

That is a head-scratcher.

And another very
significant thing

That could tie the templars here

Is if we find "the why."

All those other ws

Are gonna fall right into place.

We're down to the
final two top finds

From season ten
on our countdown.

And while all the discoveries
we've covered so far

Suggest there really could be

An incredible
treasure on oak island,

This next one could
lead to its exact location.

The tunnel in the baby blob.

All right, this is
going to be 98.

More competent material there.

Looks like it's firming up?

Hold on. We got wood.

Wow. That's in...
Wow. That's incredible.

We had firm, in-place
material above that point.

Now we have structure.

Early in the year,

While drilling a borehole
known as dn-12.5

In the money pit area,

The team was amazed
when they encountered

A believed tunnel
some 95 feet deep

In the zone that would
later be identified

As the "baby blob."

The question was,
just where did it lead?

Down to 99.

Okay.

After several more
weeks of exploratory drilling,

Upon reaching that
same depth of 95 feet

In a borehole called dn-13.5...

We've got wood.

- We've got the wood?
- Yep.

- They finally found the answer.
- Right here.

- Look at that. Same wood contact.
- Yeah.

- Eight inches here.
- Okay. Wow.

You've got a pretty
good chunk of wood here.

Yeah, it's fairly firm there

And above, it's relatively firm.

Undisturbed material
and relatively firm below.

This is where we are at dn-13.5.

This is really,
really interesting.

This looks like the continuation

Of this tunnel that
we hit here at dn-12.5.

Now we're over here at dn-13.5,

Five feet further to the west.

We're starting to get a really
good east-west alignment

Back towards the garden shaft.

Yeah. To me, this is a
tunnel which it looks like

And it goes by the
garden shaft or under it.

It's exciting.

It's wood at an elevation
that indicates human beings

Were at that level
doing some enterprise.

It's not confirmation,

But it certainly is
somewhat supportive

That it is indeed a tunnel.

The team had found
a previously unknown tunnel

That passed right through
the so-called treasure zone,

Which appeared to
be heading right toward

The garden shaft.

Okay, that would probably
be the outside wall there.

First uncovered in 2017

While the team was looking
for the original money pit,

Rick, marty and craig tester

Believed this feature
was nothing more

Than an abandoned
19th-century searcher shaft

Due to the fact that it
was only 82 feet deep.

We've sampled wells
within the money pit area.

And we do have some
chemistry back from this.

We did do a series
of measurements

Of water levels
near the garden shaft,

Heading south.

So, we're seeing a
general flow direction

That is sort of from
the north of the site

Toward the south of the site.

We scooped up two
samples in the garden shaft,

Sent those away, and we
found gold in the garden shaft.

It was everything I hoped for.

It seems like we're
on the right quest.

I think these analyses
and chasing this gold

In the water is gonna
lead us to the treasure.

However, after
drs. Spooner and michel

Announced at the

But we're here to

And the hope is that when
we go down in the shaft,

Our senses will be more
attuned to the possibilities

Of what the shaft represents

In terms of furthering
our understanding

In the money pit.

So far, we've
covered ancient coins,

Medieval structures
and even trace evidence

Of precious metals, all
found during season ten

Of the curse of oak island.

And all suggesting that
something of great value

Lies buried deep underground.

But where could it be?

That questions brings us to
the top find on our countdown.

A treasured
hit in the garden shaft.
