This construct is

So, tonight, we're digging into

The most perplexing
man-made structures

The team has found that suggest

This mystery is more complex

And goes further back in time

Than anyone ever knew.

Is the fellowship
of the dig on course

To unearth multiple treasures?

Well, get ready as we count down

Oak island's top ten
ancient structures.

Ever since a 13-foot
diameter shaft,

That came to be
known as the money pit,

Was discovered
on the eastern end

Of oak island in 1795,

More than a dozen well-funded
treasure hunting companies

Have struggled in vain
trying to get to the bottom

Of that mysterious,
ancient construct.

And for good reasons.

It contained wooden
platforms every ten feet.

It is believed to
be booby-trapped

By elaborate flood tunnels.

It reportedly
contained a large stone

With carved symbols,

Which have been
translated to read:

"40 feet below, two
million pounds are buried."

In fact, so much digging
has taken place over the years

That today, the actual location

Of the original money
pit is also a mystery.

- Are we there yet?
- We're getting close, marty.

For more than a decade now,

Brothers rick and marty lagina,

Their partner craig
tester and their team,

Have made a number
of valiant efforts

Trying to find the shaft...

Just what it might contain.

That's remarkable.

However, they've
also made it a priority

To search the
entire island for clues

That will help
solve the mystery.

I have been fascinated
with trying to understand

The mystery in its totality.

- Quite a structure.

Who, what, when,
where, why, and how.

And I think we are on
the cusp of a discovery

That will ultimately
lead to the solution.

We all come at this differently

And yet we all sit
at the same table

With the same goals in mind.

The greater good.

Trying to understand
this incredibly powerful,

Incredibly complex mystery.

And those efforts have
paid off in major ways,

As numerous
structures that pre-date

Any known settlements
on oak island...

And contain potentially
valuable clues...

Have been discovered.

And that brings us to the
first entry on our countdown.

The pine tar kiln.

If we turn over rocks here

And we got organics under it,

That will date the
beginning of whatever this is.

All right. Let's get digging.

In 2020, the team, led
by archaeologists laird niven,

Dr. Aaron taylor
and david mcginnis

Investigated a
mysterious stone feature

Located on lot 15,

Just a couple hundred yards
north of the money pit area.

The site had actually
appeared on a survey map

Created more than
three decades earlier

By the late oak island landowner

And treasure hunter fred nolan,

Labeled as a "tunnel entrance."

First thing I'd like to
do is just peer down in here.

Yeah. Have a look. Have a look.

It looks a lot different
than it does on the tube.

Look at the way it's built.

It kind of looks like
a tunnel entrance.

As the experts
meticulously excavated

The odd feature, they
weren't able to determine

If there was, in fact,
a tunnel related to it.

Something was
intentionally built on this.

- You're sure?
- We're positive with that.

Absolutely. That's 100%.

However, they did uncover clues

That made them believe

It could be directly connected

To the oak island mystery.

So, this goes all the
way back to 1500.

The most important artifact
on this site is charcoal.

Charcoal is throughout
this whole site.

That can only be
produced at a site

Where you have
repetitive burning.

When you add up everything,
this is why david and I are

So certain that it
is a pine tar kiln.

It could've been
used for construction

Of the money pit.

- Wow.
- Really?

Finding a structure
that may date back

500 years or more
and possibly related

To the construction
of the money pit

Offered the team critical clues

As to when the mystery
may have begun.

And curiously,
later that same year,

They'd unearth an even more
stunning man-made feature

That dates to the
same time period.

And it's the next
top entry on our list.

The stone road.

Wow!

It's quite
impressive, though, isn't it?

It's incredibly impressive.

Stand right there and you'll
get a real good perspective.

Unbelievable.

Over the years,

Some had speculated

That the triangle-shaped swamp

In the middle of the island

Had been manipulated,

If not completely
artificially created.

But when the
fellowship unearthed

A massive cobblestone road

In the southeast
corner of the bog,

It would lead to
astonishing revelations

About the potential
origins of the mystery.

Hey, marty.

How do you like your
swamp expressway?

This is really cool. I
mean, this is mondo cool.

- Yeah.
- It's impressive.

That looks exactly
like an old roman road.

It's possible.

The team
archaeologists believe the road

May have once been
part of a ship's wharf,

At a time when the
swamp was an open harbor.

And given how well-hidden
it was in a brackish swamp,

It may have been used to offload

Some kind of cargo
onto the island.

But what? By who? And when?

What I tend to find is that,

When roads have been engineered

With so much stone like this,

They were designed
to carry heavy loads.

This stone is two or
three courses thick.

Exactly.

There probably was a dock

- A little bit more to the sea.
- Yeah.

In an effort to find out,

Rick invited terry deveau,

A scientist and historian,

To examine the structure.

So, to me, it would
speak to a technology

Of road building that
people were used to using

In the 1500s or earlier.

The portuguese were active
in nova scotia in the 1500s.

A possible portuguese design?

Well, get ready for
a stone-cold shocker.

In 2021, rick, his
nephews alex and peter

And oak island
historian doug crowell

Traveled all the way to portugal

To visit sites where,

Between the 12th
and 16th centuries,

Strongholds were held
by the knights templar.

It has long been speculated

That this christian
military order

Had come into possession
of priceless religious treasures

During the crusades
that included the holy grail

And the ark of the covenant

And had later buried
them on oak island.

Okay, let's see
what we can find.

Every one of them has a symbol.

Incredibly, they
saw carved symbols

Matching several that have
been found on oak island.

This symbol is definitely
on the 90 foot stone.

But in alqueidão da serra,

They were shown a roman-era road

That was an identical match

To the stone road
uncovered in the swamp.

If there is a
portuguese connection

To the construction of
the road in the swamp,

Maybe this is the blueprint.

During our
stewardship of the mystery,

The stone road is probably

One of the most significant
finds we have made.

A road in a bog?

To what end, for what purpose?

It looks a lot more similar

- To what we have, that's for sure.
- Yeah.

We now have a
very unique opportunity

To visit a very early
stone construct of a road

That goes back to roman times.

And maybe there's a possible
connection to oak island.

The lot 26 wall.

So, I'm sure everybody
recognizes this area.

In 2022, rick
lagina directed laird niven

And members of
the team to lot 26

On the southern
edge of the island.

There, he asked laird
to lead an investigation

Of a curious stone wall

That had always
struck him as odd

Compared to others that
were known to have been made

By 19th-century settlers.

It's unlike any of the others.

It's wider. Thicker.

There's more of
a construct to it.

Regular farmer's
stone walls are just...

You find a stone in the field,

You throw it on the pile, right?

Every single rock
wall that I've seen

All over the island
is more rounded.

Correct.

I'd like to put a test unit
hard up against the wall.

So, we can get
a good cross-section

And see how it was built.

Yeah. Exactly.

For several weeks,

Laird and members of the
team meticulously investigated

Around and within
the structure of the wall,

Looking for clues.

This isn't a field stone.

This is coming from
probably the shore.

And it shatters. It's broken off.

So, that's what's
perplexing to us.

What were they doing?

- Why is this here?
- Yeah.

While laird and
members of the team continued

To be intrigued by
the wall's construction...

We have a researcher in
the azores, francisco nogueira.

Historian francisco nogueira

Offered his analysis

On the feature's
possible cultural origin.

No way.

If francisco was correct,

Then the wall on lot 26

Was built during the same era

As the stone road in the swamp.

Could it mean that members

Of the portuguese sect
of the knights templar,

Who operated between
the 12th and 16th centuries,

Really visited oak island?

- That's charcoal.
- That's a cool find.

That's pretty interesting.

- We got a nice, burnt twig, basically.
- Nice.

Well, laird, alex

Found a clue inside
the wall on lot 26

That could be carbon-dated
in order to help verify it.

The date came
in one time period.

1474 to 1638.

Wow.

- Wow.
- Great.

I'm a bit taken aback,

Because according to francisco,

The wall on lot 26

Exhibits portuguese
construction.

And now you have a date
of the wall from 1474 to 1638.

You know, there are connections.

We know the portuguese
were in the area.

I think there is a
rather unique story

Being constructed
about oak island,

And I hope that
progress continues.

Progress surely would continue,

Because the next
"construct," as rick put it,

On our countdown
may have been another

Key piece of evidence
that supported

The portuguese templar theory.

The stone pathway.

Start going over

After unearthing the stone road

In the southeast corner
of the swamp back in 2020,

The team was amazed
when they discovered

An adjacent stone pathway

Running along the bog's
entire eastern border.

It not only also
matched a pathway

That the team would
later find in 2021

Extending off the stone
road in alqueidão da serra...

I'm ready for a
bobby-dazzler, gary.

Oof, long overdue.

But it produced
even more incredible clues

That could help solve
the oak island mystery.

That sounds fantastic.

Yeah, billy, you might want
to come and see this, mate.

This sounds really, really good.

Yup. Definitely got

I think there it is, billy.

Ooh, I can feel it.

Look at that! This is fantastic.

Yeah, looks like a ring bolt.

We could have
found a ring bolt, mate.

In the 1970s,
fred nolan had also found

Ring bolts near the swamp.

And it was his belief
that these ring bolts

Had been used to anchor
a large sailing vessel

So that valuable cargo

Could be unloaded
onto oak island.

Wow.

Wow, indeed.

That is incredible.

- It's amazing.
- Yeah.

The swamp, it continues
to be the keeper of secrets.

Will we be able to unravel

Or to come to an understanding
of what those secrets are

And how relevant they
are to the money pit work

Or the money pit story?

I don't know. That's
yet to be determined.

But get down and
dirty every day,

You'll eventually figure it out.

Just a couple weeks later,

While getting down and dirty
with his fellowship brethren,

Rick discovered another one
of the swamp's amazing secrets.

Hey, look at that.

Check that out. Cask.

That's what
that is, mate, a keg.

Hey, guys.

Check that out. Top of a keg.

- Wow. So, that's a keg, lid to a keg?
- Yep.

Holy crow.

Right here.

- Yeah, there's another one.
- Yeah, another piece.

Does this... Do
these go together?

This one's too rounded.

Yeah, they're different...

Different radiuses.

Two keg, or cargo barrel, tops,

Found right along
the stone pathway.

How old might they be?

Hey, carmen.

To try and find out,

Members of the team visited

Their trusted blacksmithing
expert carmen legge.

Can you venture to
put a date on "extremely old"?

Right.

The stone ramp.

- So, pull up. Let's start here.
- All right.

In 2022, rick, craig
and members of the team

Excavated a spot near the
northeastern edge of the swamp,

Hoping to uncover a
large metallic anomaly

That had been detected
during a magnetometry survey.

The bucket going across
here hitting something solid.

You can hear it all the way.

- What is that?
- I'm not sure,

But I think there's all
rocks underneath there.

But I think they're coming...

They're sloping up.

Really?

You just see the white tops.

Yeah, that's a lot of cobble.

- I am gonna take an elevation.
- Okay, sounds good.

After already uncovering

The stone road and
pathway in the swamp...

So, we're a foot and a
half below sea level here.

Yeah, it seems like
it's coming up this way.

- It could be a ramp.
- Yeah.

You can imagine
how rocked they were

To unearth a man-made
ramp connected to the path.

Could it offer more evidence

That the swamp was once
used as an offloading point

For something of great value?

If so, what?

Who constructed it? And when?

I think the ramp
looks quite spectacular.

The ramp obviously needs
to be thoroughly investigated

To try to understand what
does the ramp signify in terms of

The so-called stone path

And where does
that stone path lead.

While the team
was unable to locate

Any metal objects in the area,

As they continued
investigating the ramp,

They were able to find
organic materials within it

That could be tested

To give an approximate
date of its creation.

Okay, we have two
samples here... I'm looking at 'em...

That came from the ramp area.

You have carbon
dating results, correct?

Yep.

The, the deepest piece,
which was under the second rock,

It could have been there,

You know, as
they were building it.

It was dated...

1495 to 1656.

Whoa!

The team had now found

Another ancient
man-made construct

That was approximately
500 years old,

Just like the pathway
and the road in the swamp,

As well as the
rock wall on lot 26.

So, could that mean

That the portuguese
sect of the knights templar

Are linked to the
oak island mystery?

Perhaps. But it's likely
not the whole story.

That's because the ramp
connected the pathway

To another feature in the swamp

That actually may
be centuries older.

And it's the next ancient
structure on our countdown.

The paved area.

We just got to go two
meters north and we're there.

- So, north now?
- Yes.

It should be right around
here, within a couple feet.

I wonder if I can probe down
there and actually get hands on.

In 2019, rick, marty and craig

Asked steve guptill
and diver tony sampson

To help them probe
the middle of the swamp

Where seismic scanning
identified a massive anomaly

That was eerily shaped
like an ancient ship.

Got something here!

That's... That's weird.

See, that's definitely solid.

Yep, still going further out.

If it's man-made, that'd
be huge, being out in the swamp.

That makes this
extremely interesting.

Although the ship-shaped anomaly

Has remained a mystery so far,

Once the team drained
the swamp and began to dig,

They found something
that was no less perplexing.

That remarkable?

- Yeah.
- Tell me that's natural.

There's no
way that's natural, rick.

Look at it. It's just
layered right on top.

It was a vast
man-made paved feature.

And incredibly, the team
would realize later on

That it actually connects
to the 500-year-old

Stone ramp and pathway.

Holy crow.

What are we looking at?

However, when
geoscientist dr. Ian spooner

Found a stick
within the paved area

That he could test,
in order to determine

When it was built,
things got really muddy.

There's the dates we're getting.

- Wow.
- Yeah.

- What are they?
- Around 1200 a.D.

- Medieval.
- Medieval, baby!

So, what could explain

A possibly 800-year-old
paved feature

Being connected with
two 500-year-old structures

In a potentially man-made,
triangle-shaped swamp?

The team may have
gotten their answer in 2016

When the late
author zena halpern

Gave them two maps and a cipher

That she believed
had been created

By members of
the knights templar.

According to her research,

These documents represented
smoking-gun evidence

That the templar order
made numerous journeys

From europe to oak island

Between the 12th
and 14th centuries

In order to hide their
sacred religious treasures.

The ramp is coming
from the paved area,

Which dates to 1200.

And the ramp leading
from it is 1495 to 1656.

So, does that mean there
were successive attempts

To construct something,
to conduct some enterprise,

And that it was
done over centuries?

Right now, that's the
only plausible explanation.

Nolan's cross.

In 1981, fred nolan,

Who had been a
surveyor by trade,

Was astonished
when he discovered

Five cone-shaped
boulders on his property

That formed a perfectly
symmetric megalithic cross.

And at the center,

He uncovered a
sixth massive rock

That was carved into the
shape of a human head.

I thought, if you
look at nolan's cross,

There's five dots,

And you only need
four to make a cross.

So, the fifth might be
what you need to place

A pentagram on nolan's cross.

Wow.

Over the past decade,

A number of theorists
have presented rick,

Marty and the team
with various theories

About what the cross
represents and who constructed it.

The head of the nolan cross

Is a huge signpost, if you will,

That the templars
were on oak island.

Most have suggested

That the structure was symbolic

And that the builders
were none other than...

Surprise, surprise...
The knights templar.

I believe that
there is an ancient, ancient

Treasure hidden
deep below oak island.

And nolan's cross
is the key to finding it.

And in 2022,

Architect and
author brian pharoah

Presented his theory
of how nolan's cross

May actually point to where

The sacred templar treasures
are buried on the island.

Curiously also,
nolan's cross is encoding

Sacred numbers and geometry.

So, I really believe
that nolan's cross

May lead us to a
money pit location

- And where the treasure might be.
- That's great.

Sacred geometry
is an ancient concept

Where symbolic
meanings are assigned

To specific shapes and numbers...
Also considered to be sacred...

And are found in the
designs and measurements

Of many ancient holy
sites all across the world.

So, how does this
work with nolan's cross?

Well, let's go to the next
slide and I'll show you.

So, these are my
measurements of nolan's cross.

The short axes had
a length of 720 feet.

720 feet could be broken
down into two 360-foot lengths.

The long axes was
measured at 864 feet.

I looked at the
head of the cross,

And it was extremely close
to the 144 sacred number.

And then from the
center, we got 432 feet.

And at the bottom,
we have 288 feet.

All of our sacred numbers
now appear in nolan's cross.

All of this cannot
be happenstance.

It has to be planned.

So, how's nolan's cross gonna
give us a money pit solution?

Let's take a look
at the next slide.

Using the
measurements of the cross

To create corresponding circles

And then connecting
intersecting lines,

Brian discovered
that several of them

Converged at a location
in the money pit area

Where he suspected
the long-lost treasure shaft

Might be found.

- Wow.
- That's an interesting spot.

I was gonna say, we should've
had him here a few years ago.

As for solid evidence
that he's correct, stick around.

We'll come back
to that a bit later.

But several weeks after
their meeting with brian,

Members of the
team would learn that,

According to archaeoastronomer
professor adriano gaspani,

Nolan's cross was likely
constructed in 1200 a.D.

So, we have potentially

500-year-old features
here on oak island

And still others that
could date back 800 years,

Predating the voyage to
america by christopher columbus.

But believe it or not,
there may be a structure

That's even older than
that on these 140 acres.

And that brings us to
the next entry on our list.

The well on lot 26.

You wouldn't know it was a well.

- Yep.
- Looks crudely made.

It does.

In 2022,

Rick lagina prompted laird niven

And dr. Spooner to
conduct water tests

And take core samples
from this structure on lot 26,

Which is located
less than 100 feet

From the believed
16th century stone wall.

From the moment I saw the well

In the wintertime years ago,

It wasn't frozen.

That was the real "aha."

Why is this well so unique?

Let's just see how we did.

Quite good. Excellent.

There we go. That's
a pretty good core.

The first major
clue that the well might be

Directly connected to
the oak island mystery

Came from the water
testing dr. Spooner performed.

So, we got samples of
the water from the well.

And, it was one of our only

Silver hits outside
of the money pit.

Well done.

As the team worked to determine

How old the well might be,

Laird led the effort to
excavate the feature,

Revealing it to be much larger

And more intriguing
than first thought.

The well is-is
really quite amazing.

In the context of other
things found on lot 26,

It maybe, moves
the dial upwards.

And we're trying to
figure out how old it is

Because lot 26 has
always been mysterious.

And while the source
of the silver detected in the well

Remains a mystery
for the time being...

I'll turn it over to dr. Spooner

And let him describe the
core and then the results.

When the carbon-dating
of the organic materials

Found inside it were
complete, it proved that the well

May be the oldest structure
ever found on oak island.

The date I got on
the twig at the bottom

Was, 1028 to 1172.

- This is brilliant.
- Yeah, great.

Those dates, it blew me away.

I mean, what's this
doing in this core?

- Yeah.
- That is really cool.

If that well is that old,

I mean, you got
to really think about

- What happened on this island.
- Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

Well, like templars
were here or something.

There you go, jack.

Y-you got to wonder
what the story is.

Templars, baby!

The stone well on lot
26 just goes to show

The circular stone depression.

Here it is.

All right. Here we be.

Yeah.

What is this, laird?

I thought it was something
like the cellar for a barn.

- It's almost perfectly circular.
- I know.

In 2022,

The laginas and craig
tester purchased lot 5,

Which is located on the
western side of the island.

All they really knew about it
was that it previously belonged

To the late treasure
hunter robert young,

And that he had reportedly made

A number of historic
discoveries there,

Including ancient
coins and artifacts.

We'll just add to robert's legacy.

That's the whole point of this.

- Yeah.
- Continuing the work

That he did for many,
many, many years.

The lot is a mystery.

- L-let's see what we can find.
- Okay.

And continue robert's work

They surely did,

With incredible discoveries,

Such as a stone foundation
believed to date to the 1730s,

A 2,000-year-old roman coin

And a lead barter token

That might not only be related
to the 14th century lead cross

But also the knights templar.

Let's start by
probing, like, here.

Yep.

- And that should be surface.
- That is... That is a rock.

And then... And
then go the other way.

So, confidently, I can
say there's rocks here.

Yeah, and you
can see rocks here.

- It's-it's circular. I mean, you can even see it.
- Yeah.

- You know, from the trowel to this little tree.
- Yeah. Yeah.

So, when they
began investigating

The circular depression on lot 5

That was completely
lined with rocks...

- That's soil.
- Soil.

They were stunned by
what they were able to determine.

I think, why
don't we measure it?

Sure.

See if it conforms to
some sort of standard.

- All right, so you're lined up with the edge?
- Yep.

Here we're at 13 feet.

- That's a bizarre measurement.
- That is the exact

- Same dimension as the money pit is described as having.
- Yeah.

I mean, what are
we looking at here?

Yeah.

The structure
matched the original description

Of the money pit when
it was found in 1795:

A circular depression
lined with paving stones

With a 13-foot diameter.

The round feature
on lot 5 can turn out

To be significant
because it's so odd.

It's a thing not found elsewhere
on nova scotia on oak island.

It could be very meaningful.

We need to explore it.

You can see rocks
coming up here,

So, well below
these placed rocks.

- Yeah. Yeah.
- Right?

The occupation could be...

I mean, we're finding
artifacts from the 1750s.

Wow.

Is there any chance
that the top feature

Was built at a later date
than the rocks that are lower?

Absolutely.

Yeah, this was at a later date.

Yeah, and there could be

An even earlier
component under that.

Right?

So, this could be

A really old stone feature
that was then rebuilt

- And-and rock-lined back in the 1700s?
- Yeah.

That's what we're hoping for.

Finding pottery that dated

To the mid-1700s
convinced laird niven

That the feature must predate
the discovery of the money pit.

But as the team continued
to reveal more layers of stone,

It made them wonder if
this structure was something

They've been trying to
locate for several years.

Sounds to me like the top
feature is not just an apron.

- It's the limits of quite a massive structure.
- Yeah.

It could go deeper.

This could fit in
with zena's map.

This could be the hatch.

It's close to the
approximate location

That we're looking
for the hatch.

Ever since the late author

And researcher zena
halpern gave the team

A reported 14th century
map of oak island

That she believed
had been created

By members of
the knights templar,

They have been looking for

A number of
features labeled on it.

And one that has
especially interested them

Is marked right in
the vicinity of lot 5,

Called "the hole
under the hatch."

I believe in zena
halpern's work.

I believe that the
map represents

Some features on the island.

Um, is it possible that
this might be the hatch?

There are a lot of
possibilities on this island.

Who knows what we might find

Down at the bottom of that
and where it might lead to.

The garden shaft.

Okay, that would be
probably the outside wall there.

- 10-4.
- A ten-by-ten shaft.

When the team first
uncovered the 82-foot-deep

Assumed searcher shaft,

Rick thought it should
be preserved for posterity.

So, he and billy gerhardt
built a rock garden around it

As a tribute to all
the women involved

With the 228-year-old search.

We've sampled wells

Within the money pit area.

And we do have some
chemistry back from this.

We did do

A series of measurements
of water levels

Near the... The garden shaft,

Heading south.

But then, in 2022,

Geoscientist dr. Ian spooner
and hydrogeologist dr. Fred michel

Tested water in the shaft,

As well as in
surrounding boreholes,

During their ongoing effort
to pinpoint the location

Of the money pit treasure vault.

We scooped up two
samples in the garden shaft,

Sent those away.

And we found,

Gold in, the garden shaft.

If those gold
results weren't enough,

When carbon-dating on
a wood sample suggested

Test a wood sample taken
from a depth of 50 feet.

And from this one,

I detected...

Gold.

Those results

Made the team suspect

That the garden
shaft could be related

In some way to the money pit,

Especially when they
discovered a nearby tunnel

Some 95 feet deep

Where water sampling showed
the highest traces of gold

Running almost
directly below the shaft.
