Pop got a letter
from a congressman.

Horace L. Whittingham.

House Office Building.

Washington D.C."

I wonder what this is.

Hey, Mom?

- Maybe he deducted too
much for entertainment.

- What's the matter?

You got something
interesting there?

- Yeah, Pop got a letter
from a Congressman.

- Oh, good, he's been
waiting for that.

It's probably about Willow Lake.

- You mean Pop's
going to buy a lake?

- No, but he's on
a committee that

wants to buy it for the city.

That is, if the
government will sell it.

- Why do they want
to buy Willow Lake?

There's nothing up there
except the lake, of course.

- Well, that's just the point.

A whole bunch of people got
together and figured out

they could make a wonderful
recreation spot out of it.

You know, develop the
beaches, and build piers

and eating places
and things like that.

- Well, how did Pop
get mixed up in it?

- Well, he suggested somebody
write to our congressmen,

and the committee elected him.

- What's all the
excitement about?

- Oh, you got a reply from
Congressman Whittingham.

- Oh, good.

- It's right here, Pop.

- Well, this is what
I call fast action.

See, the committee was
contacting the Department

of the Interior and
getting nowhere,

so I suggested we write
to the congressman direct.

- I was just telling
the boys about it.

- Hey, wait a minute, Pop.

You're not going to read
it that way, are you?

- Well, why not?

- You're not wearing a tie.

- I don't think the congressman
will find out about it.

Oh, say, this is nice.

A package of seeds.

- Oh.

- "Dear Mr. Nelson,
this is to advise you

that we have received
your letter concerning

the purchase of Willow Lake.

You may be assured I have given
it my immediate attention.

I am pleased to
inform you that I

have forwarded your letter to
the Department of the Interior.

I'm sure they will give the
matter their consideration."

- Was that all?

- "Yours very truly,
Horace L. Whittingham,"

representative and so forth.

- Looks like you
wasted a stamp, Pop.

- He probably never
even saw my letter.

This looks like one
of those form letters

that a secretary sends out.

I suppose you can't
blame these guys.

They're pretty busy.

- Yes, that's true.

I suppose they got a lot
of letters from crackpots.

- Well, who's a crackpot?

- I don't mean you, dear.

- It's going to be
so darn embarrassing.

What am I going to
tell the committee?

- Well, I wouldn't be
concerned about that.

After all, you did
the best you could.

- Well, I know, but there
ought to be some way

to get some action
on this thing.

- Well, at least it
wasn't a total loss.

We got a package of seeds.

Besides, who knows, you
may get some action.

- Well, maybe so,
but it looks to me

like one of these
red tape deals.

- Hey, why doesn't the committee
send somebody to Washington

in person?

- I can be packed in 15 minutes.

- [scoffs] You'd be
a great one to send.

- I'll bet I'd come back with
more seeds than you would.

- Wait a minute.

Maybe Dave's got an idea there.

Why don't you and I
fly to Washington?

- You're kidding.

- No, no, I really mean it.

I haven't been there since
I was in high school.

I think we owe
ourselves a vacation.

We could do a
little sightseeing.

Combine business with pleasure.

Come on, what do you say?

- Well, I don't know.

It's kind of sudden.

Besides, wouldn't it
be awfully expensive?

- Well, it's part business
and part sightseeing.

Maybe the committee will
pay some of the expenses.

- When's the next
committee meeting?

- Tonight.

- Well, let's see what happens.

- You know, maybe this letter
isn't such a brush-off at that.

"Dear Mr. Nelson,

struck me when I first read it.

- A lot of good that does us.

We're still right
where we started.

- I have a suggestion.

I suggest we all vote
for somebody else

at the next election.

- Now, wait a minute.

Let's be fair about this.

We can hardly blame
the Congressman.

After all, he probably
gets thousands of letters

from all sorts of crack--

I-- I mean, and a lot
of them are probably

more important than ours.

I mean, ours is
important, but it probably

just got lost in the shuffle.

- Mr. Nelson is right.

- Yes, but what do we do now?

- Well, I have a thought.

It seems to me that we ought
to send a man to Washington

to present our case to Mr.
Whittingham personally.

- What a wonderful idea.

All in favor of sending someone
to Washington, say, aye.

- Aye.
- Aye.

- The ayes have it.

Now, who shall we send?

- Well, as a matter
of fact, I'll

be glad to take the
time off and go myself.

- Well, that's very
nice of you, Mr. Nelson,

but I feel that
Mr. Nelson has done

more than his share already.

And it would be unfair to
impose on him any further.

So with that in mind, I'd
be willing to go myself.

- I agree, but it's
time the rest of us

shouldered some of the work.

Mr. Nelson wrote the letter.

And, well, as far as that
goes, uh, Mr. Jackson

himself has put in a lot of
time at the lake inspecting, uh,

fishing conditions.

Therefore, I, uh, feel it's
my duty to go to Washington.

- What about me?

I haven't done a darn thing.

- Well, I think we
should send a woman,

somebody with connections.

Now, I had a letter from
Mamie just the other day.

- Mamie?

- Yes, my sister-in-law,
Mamie Flaherty.

She's a manicurist at
the Senate barbershop.

- Well, I think it's
wonderful that so many are

willing to go, especially since
the committee of this nature

has such limited
funds and whoever goes

will have to pay
his own expense.

- Uh, maybe I am a little
selfish wanting to go.

After all, it was Mr.
Nelson's suggestion.

- Come to think
of it, I've always

been allergic to
cherry blossoms.

- I think you're right.

Mr. Nelson is the man to go.

- You think I ought to

- Harriet, please, I'm trying to

- You all packed?

- Yeah, just about.

- Think I'll lay this big
suitcase over on that bench.

It'll be a little
easier to handle.

- Gee, you got an awful
lot of stuff there, Pop.

- Oh, we're going to
be gone several days.

- Oh, for goodness
sakes, dear, you

don't need all these shirts.

You've got enough
here for a month.

You don't need those
extra slacks either.

- Whatever you think.

- Uh, Pop, Ricky and
I have been thinking.

We've been saving
up a little money

to take a trip
one of these days.

- Wait a minute, Dave,
this is a coincidence.

I've been thinking
the same thing.

But what about your schoolwork?

- Well, our spring
vacation starts this week.

- Oh, good.

And don't worry about the
money for the trip, fellas.

I'll take care of that.

- Oh, gee, that's swell, Pop!

- Yeah, that'd be swell, Pop.

- Well, after all,
it costs quite a bit

to fly to Washington.

- Washington?

- Well, yeah,
didn't you just say

you want to take a
trip to Washington?

- We were going to go up
to Willow Lake, fishing.

All that talk about Willow
Lake got us thinking about it.

- We'll still take
the money, though.

- [chuckles] Well, I just
thought you might be interested

in going to Washington.

- Oh, maybe next summer,
but we only have a week off.

And we thought we could have
some fun up at Willow Lake.

- Oh, yeah, well, I
guess you would at that.

- You mentioned money, Pop.

We could still use some.

- Well.

Would $20 be enough?

- For a plane trip
to Washington?

- [chuckles] Here's
$10 a piece, fellas.

- Thanks, Pop.

- You won't need all
these socks, will you?

And these extra shoes?

Oh, and this razor's
awfully heavy, dear.

- Look, Harriet, I
don't mind walking

around Washington barefoot
and without my pants

on, but let me shave, huh?

- As long as you got all that
extra room in your suitcase

now, dear, do you mind if I put
a few of my things in there?

- First thing tomorrow
morning, we'll

go down to the House
office building

and see Congressman Whittingham.

We may have to take him
to lunch or something.

And then in the
afternoon, we might

have to go down to the
Department of Interior

and see somebody from there.

I figure we should get the whole
thing straightened out by about

4:00 or 4:30 in the afternoon.

- Well, that isn't going
to give us much time

to do any sightseeing.

- Take a look.

You're seeing it now.

- Is that Washington?

- Yeah, we're coming
in, over the Capitol.

See, that's the
Smithsonian Institute.

- Are you sure?

- Well, it's been a long
time, but it looks familiar.

Maybe it's the
Library of Congress.

It's certainly a beautiful city.

Majestic.

Has great dignity and charm.

- Attention, please,
we are now passing

over the city of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

- Did you enjoy your trip?

- Oh, yes, thank you.

Say, I wonder if you
could tell me something.

Do you know where we could get
a bus for a sightseeing tour?

- Oh, yes, there are
quite a few places.

I'm sure they can help you at
the information desk inside.

Harriet, wait,
where are you going?

- Well, I just want to see
about the sightseeing tour.

- We have business
to attend to first.

We can go sightseeing later.

- Oh.

- The first place I want to
see is the Capitol Building.

special building

for the offices of the
Senators and the Congressmen.

- Oh, whereabouts is it?

- Well, I'm not sure.

It's around here some place.

I'll ask somebody.

- Hey, why don't you
ask that man over there?

He's important-looking.

I'll bet you he's a
Senator or something.

- Well, no, let's
ask somebody else.

Don't ask him.
- Well, why?

If he's a Senator,
he certainly knows

where the office building is.
- Harriet.

- Pardon me, can
you tell me where

the House of Representatives
office building is?

- Certainly.

Just, uh, go out of the front
door there and two blocks left.

You can't miss it.

- Are you folks
strangers in Washington?

- Well--

- Well, yes, we just
got in last night.

- Oh.

- And we're going to see
Congressman Whittingham

on some business.

about a project we're trying
to interest the Congressman in.

See, it was about Willow Lake.

A group from our city would
like to purchase it and turn it

into a recreation center.

- I'm sure he'd be very
happy to talk to you,

but unfortunately, he's
out and won't be back

for the rest of the day.

- Oh, oh, well, that's a shame.

Well, how about tomorrow?

- Let me see.

Will 10:00 tomorrow
morning be all right?

- Well, yes, that'll be fine.

- It'd sure make a nice souvenir
to take home to the boys,

It just sliced over here and
rolled along by the fence.

I reached in and picked it up.

I was just going

- You don't have to do that.

You can keep it as a souvenir.

- If I could catch fish as well
as I get this line tangled up,

I'd be doing fine.

- It's pretty tough fishing
from the shore here.

- Well, they should have a road
so you can bring a rowboat in.

no place to launch
a boat around here.

- Oh.

- I know this is
quite an imposition,

- Well, I know.

I'm sorry we went.

We had a wonderful time.

We did a lot of sightseeing.

I enjoyed every minute of it.

- [gasps]

- What's the matter?

- Well, my money belt kind
of squeezed my stomach there.

- Money belt?

- Oh, I guess I didn't tell
you that I bought a money

belt to keep my golf ball in.

- There are the boys.

- Oh, hi, fellas.

- Hi, Pop.

- Nice to see you.
- Did you have a good trip?

- Hi, Pop.
- Oh, it's good to see you.

- Well, it was pretty good.

- Did you catch any fish?

- Yeah, four trout
and a redhead.

- [chuckles]

I wanted to see.

- Really?
- Yes.

See, I wrote you a letter

I finally get to
meet the Congressman,

I don't get a chance to tell
him what I want to tell him.

- Well, at least you
can tell the committee

you talked to him.

- You can tell the committee
more than that, Pop.

You can tell him he's going
through with the deal.

- What deal is that?

- You know, the deal you
went to Washington about,

making a recreation
area up at Willow Lake.

- Yeah, Mr. Whittingham was up
there and he loves the place.

He agrees with you.

- Well, how about that?

- And he's going to start
making the necessary--

- Oh, Ricky, what do
you know about it?

- Are you kidding?

Who do you think was sitting
in the back seat with him?

- I'm glad we went to
Washington, though.

We had a wonderful time.

We saw the Capitol Building,
and the Lincoln Memorial,

and the White House.
- Oh, wait a second.

I've got something
to show you guys.

- Oh, we got something
to show you too, Pop.

- Yeah, the Congressman's
a real nice guy.

Look what he gave us.

- Golf balls!

- Guess where they came from?

- Well, I know where
they came from.

How about that?

Oh, uh, Harriet, remind
me to write another letter

to Washington, to the
President this time, huh?

He's got to do something
about that slice of his.

These golf balls must be
costing him a fortune.
