They get a little desperate.

They'll actually sit there
and lick the walls

because they know there's
a little bit of residue there.

It's sad,
but they're so desperate,

they'll go for anything.

Rebecca: The drug has
a strong hold on him.

They didn't set out to destroy
my house or their lives.

Meth --
it's ravaged our communities,

endangered our law enforcement,

and drove many of the stories
in "Breaking Bad"

and "Better Call Saul."

Where the cook happens
is almost as important

as the product itself --

an RV, a desert compound,

and even my character Gustavo's

state-of-the-art
underground super lab

hidden below
an industrial laundromat,

all for the purpose of mixing a
combination of lethal chemicals

out of the view of prying eyes.

How did one family-owned company

become specialists
in meth-lab cleanups?

And what exactly happens
to a former meth lab

when the cooks move out?

This is my home
and my property.

A couple with a small child
stay here.

While they were here,
I came in

and about got knocked over
from the smell.

I'm like,
"Okay, this is a meth lab."

Had to call the police.

When there's a meth lab
with somebody's either cooking

or smoking in a property,
police bust the property,

and then the Health Department

sends a notification
to the property owner.

And until it's tested to prove
that it's safe to inhabit,

then no one can enter,
or they can't rent it,

they can't sell it.

When they cook
or smoke the meth,

they're leaving a residue,
just like cigarette smoke.

And that's what we're having
to go in and clean up.

Is this a dangerous job?
Yeah, it is.

Donetta: The contamination can
be really extreme on properties.

Methamphetamine is very toxic,

especially to small children
or older individuals.

Rick:
We come and we test it,

and then we literally clean
this whole place inside out.

Donetta: Even though the police
have been there

and taken all the chemicals out,

there's still a lot
of precursors and stuff

that we find that they didn't.

Rick: You have to go slowly
in the house

to find out what's going on.

You'll see syringes, tin foil.

You'll see little baggies,
a lot of lighters.

But, yeah,
there are signs of it,

just signs of anger.

Donetta: Holes punched in walls
and doors and stuff.

When a real-life meth lab
gets busted,

the hazardous materials left
behind can endanger a community.

Donetta: We had a family-owned
construction company.

We started doing the death
and crime-scene cleaning first,

and we market to the sheriffs.

They started coming up
to our trade-show booth,

asking if we did
meth-lab cleaning and testing.

It wasn't just one.
It was several.

And so that's when I started
looking into it and realized

that our state, Indiana,
was having a meth epidemic.

We have 92 counties in Indiana.

Almost every county
had a documented case

all the way up to 2013,
our highest year,

over 1,800 labs.

That averages out
to five labs per day.

Donetta:
80% to 90% of meth labs

are what they call
one-pot mobile meth labs.

They're very volatile,
and they can explode

just from the residue
that's left in there.

It's a poor man's drug.

You might see somebody
walking down the road

with a backpack on,
and they have a mobile meth lab.

They're cooking it here.
There's a lot of waste involved.

So as a cook, it goes from here
to the sink, down the drain.

And when it hits the HVAC,
it distributes everywhere,

Meth leaves a residue,
so we throw everything away.

We sweep all the walls,
all the ceiling, the floor,

and we take the carpeting out.

Donetta: My team on a lot
of these projects

have to really be careful

because we encounter
a lot of booby traps.

I walked in this one house.

I remember opening the door,

tried to turn the light on,

and they had a light bulb
up there halfway,

and it water in it
so it'll blow up on you.

Sometimes have strings
around the door knobs,

and they have to watch
when they open cabinets.

As I opened up the door,
I saw needles --

needles literally coming down

'cause they're wanting to hit
the police,

you know, or whoever.

We actually went onto a property

where, when we rolled
into the driveway with our van,

they had a board with nails

hidden underneath
the gravel driveway.

It destroyed the tire
on our van.

All across the country,
there are hidden labs

in every community.

Donetta: It's more of the worry
of the people coming back

while we're trying to
clean a job.

So, they reenter
in the middle of the process

and screw it up.

We cleaned a property,
and when we post-tested it,

it flunked because somebody
came in while we were gone

and cooked meth in there again.

When we go to clean
a property,

there is an emotional component.

Rick: It was hard
for the first two years

because I see family pictures
all over the house.

I start thinking about my kids.

My son, Zach --
he's helping me out.

He was sort of going down
the wrong road,

and then we cleaned up a camp,

and we picked up
probably over 60 needles.

He goes,
"No, Dad, I know, I know.

This is not the way to go."

"Declared unfit
for human habitation."

That will be gone soon.

The house a lot of times

is 10 times better
when we're done

than when before even
the meth lab came along.

Well, I could have went down
this road,

but thank God I didn't.

I'd rather go down
this side of the road

by cleaning up
and helping people out.

We're taking a bad situation
and making it better.

Your heart goes out
to what they're going through

because it's an addiction
that's hard to break.

One pound of meth produces
six pounds of toxic waste.

Without services
like crisis cleaners,

these former cook locations
could later be inhabited

by unsuspecting families
exposed to toxic chemicals.
