- We're having a lot of difficulty

rounding us horses, sir, it seems--

- I want horses, Major, not alibis.

I know a man down here who's
familiar with the country,

and if anybody can get 'em, he can.

- I see, and ah, just
who is this one man army?

He's a rancher.

He's been organizing a troop of volunteers

for the Rough Riders.

- Well, I don't care who you engage,

I have got to have those 500 horses,

and I want them here right away!

- Sir, these men were
rounding up horses last night,

and they were attacked
by a gang of bandits.

- Orderly!

- Ride over to Vista Grande Ranch.

Tell Mr. Cassidy I wanna

We can get men enough, but
we're up against it for horses.

The men the government
hired haven't come through.

We need tough, rugged horses.

The kind of horses that run wild

out in this part of the country.

- Oh, I see, instead of being a soldier,

you want me to be a horse
wrangler, is that it?

- I kinda hoped I'd get in
on some of the fightin'.

- I know how disappointed you feel, Hoppy,

but you see, there are other
ways of serving your country,

ways more important,

and frankly, I've got to

- But you've got plenty of men
around here can do that job.

It's urgent, I've already
recommended you to my superiors.

- 500, and I've got to
have them within a week.

- If there are that many horses

between here and the

where his friends are concerned.

Let's watch them a minute.

- I'm not very interested in watching

a lot of cowboys playing soldier.

- Oh, I think it's an excellent idea

getting themselves ready.

Why don't you organize
the boys on your ranch

into a volunteer troop?

- Afraid I have to leave the volunteering

to those who can afford to go.

leave my ranch to run itself.

(hooves thudding)

but that man killer ain't

- I don't see why anybody

the little boy's nursemaid,

and you're afraid he'll get hurt or--

to help round up them horses.

I don't know where Cassidy

figures on rounding up that many horses.

Anyway, the rest of you
fellas go with Hawks.

- Trailing Cassidy ain't
gonna be none too easy.

- You do just like I tell ya.

Now, if it looks like Cassidy's
gonna get enough horses

to fill that order,

send Brad in with the word.

We'll have enough men
here to hijack the herd

and run them across the border.

Hey, do you remember that fella, Jordan,

we sold that shipment of rifles to?

Tell him I might have some horses for him.

as the bridge with us.

(Windy chuckling)

to take that thing along?

- Ah, Hoppy, I got a great idea.

I figured we can kill
two birds with one stone.

- What he means is kill

- That's what I mean.

Not only will I get some good practice,

but the wild horses will
get used to bugling.

- What he means is if they
can stand for his bugling,

they can stand for anything.

(Hoppy laughs loudly)

- Come on, boys, we're on our way.

(hooves thudding)

- Hopalong and his men are on their way.

- [Carson] All right, boys,
get going and watch yourselves.

(hooves thudding)

- Now, this is where you leave us, son.

- How far you going?

- Well, we might have to go as far

as the range north of Ghost Canyon.

- When you figure you'll be back?

- To get the horses we
oughta be back by Monday.

- I hope you get a million of them.

(Hoppy laughs loudly)

I'll be watching for ya.

- All right, Boots, goodbye.

- [Boots] So long, Lucky.

- Come on, boys.

(hooves thudding)

(whimsical music)

- Well, there's Ghost Creek Canyon.

- Yeah, and on the ridge
the other side of there,

we oughta find all the
wild horses we want.

- Think we'll make it tonight?

- If we keep moving,
we'll make it by sundown.

(whimsical music)

(moves into dramatic music)

(cowhands shouting)

Well, this box canyon will be all right.

It'll hold all the horses we can get.

Spread some ropes across here.

We'll stay on the other side.

There's a nice little
pocket where we can camp.

- Hoppy, I wonder if
this place is haunted.

(bugle call)

- No, I guess it ain't.

(bugle call)

(Hoppy laughs loudly)

- That's all right, Windy,
we'll take care of you.

- Oh, close your trap, will ya!

(whimsical music)

- Looks like Cassidy is gonna

make this place his headquarters.

If he figures on rounding up

500 head of horses on this range

he knows something I don't.

- I don't remember of any wild horses

being in this section for two years.

- Neither do I.

(dramatic music)

- (chuckles) Hey, Windy, will ya quit

foolin' with that bugle and
bring us something to eat.

- Ah, hold your horses.

Finest mess of beans you
ever throwed your lip over.

once up in the Badlands.

We was huntin' bighorn.

Well, sir, we started out one mornin',

this was on a Thursday.

No, no, it was on a
Wednesday, or ah, Friday.

No, I'm wrong about that.

It was Sunday.

Teddy says to me, says, hey
Windy, can you ride that horse?

Say, Teddy, I can ride
any horse on four legs.

Well, I got aboard him,

and he bucked and he bucked and he
bucked.

Well, that horse done everything
a horse knows how to do.

(chuckles) Well, after I finally
rode him to a standstill,

who do you suppose the
first one was to come up

and pat me on the back and say,

Windy, I knowed you can do her.

(owl hoots)

Why, T.R. himself, ya big string bean.

- [Hoppy] Who?

- What's the matter?

(men snoring)

Well, I'll be.

(owl hoots)

(bugle call)

(spoon thudding)

Get some bacon out.

Lucky, after you've had breakfast,

I want you to go over and
look around in the meadow

on the other side of the range here.

- Ain't you afraid to let
him go without me, Hoppy?

- Nah, he's kinda growed up now (laughs).

And Windy, you take two
or three of the boys

and go around Crooked Creek.

That's about five miles east of here.

I'll take the rest of them,

go over the other side of the butte.

No worrying none if I ain't
back for a couple of days.

(dramatic music)

- No use trailing Cassidy
today is there, Hawks?

- No, he'll herd whatever
horses he gets into the canyon.

- This is gonna be easier than I thought.

- Yeah, I don't think
it's gonna be so easy.

(cowhands shouting and whistling)

- Looks like Cassidy knows his stuff.

- There's about 30 head there.

- Look, there's the old
windbag with 30 or 40 more.

since the last rain

less than a week ago.

- They sure are making it easy for us.

- Must be near 200 in that herd.

- Sneak down to the edge of that camp.

Keep your ears open.

- Hi, Hoppy, good work.

- You got a couple hundred
head there, haven't ya?

- Yeah, but some of them
ain't worth grazing space.

- Well, we brought in about 200.

- We need another hundred then.

Well, we'll get 'em tomorrow.

If we drive 'em hard, we'll
get 'em back to fort in time.

- I don't think we'll ever make it, Hoppy.

Saw a good size herd over
around Willow Basin today.

We'll round them up first
thing in the morning.

(cowhands shouting)

- Cassidy's figuring on starting back

to the fort day after tomorrow.

(hooves thudding)

- You ain't got nothing
to worry about, Jordan.

The men might've had some
trouble rounding up the horses,

but I expect to hear
from them any time now.

(hooves thudding)

Maybe this is one of my men now.

- Well, they'll have a full
herd together by sundown,

and they're ready to leave
early tomorrow morning.

- There you are.

They'll be delivered in
your corral tomorrow night.

you'll get a darn good tanning.

there's over 500 head
of horses in that herd.

- Yeah, but we'll have
to thin out some of them.

Their too small to be any good.

Well, we better turn in,

so we can get an early
start in the morning.

(horses whinnying)
