days of San Francisco,

there was such a scarcity of females

that young ladies were being snatched

off the streets by women hungry bachelors

too impetuous for the
preliminaries of courtship.

To discourage these activities,

a committee imported a number of girls

of high moral standing of the east

for the purpose of matrimony.

They were allowed ample
time for being courted

and each selected the
man of her own choice.

Most of the marriages
were successful, fruitful

and even contributed to the building

of a great state.
