I started having
these stroke-like seizures.

would get sick,

when my siblings would get sick,

if I would get what they got,
I would be ten times sicker.

And then when I was 17,

I was... I, like, woke up
to my dad waking me up,

and I realized I couldn't
really hear that well.

Sorry, this is, like, a lot,
and I've never just, like...

- I'm... I'm all... I'm listening.
- Um...

and then my hearing,
like, kept getting worse.

Communicating
was really hard for me,

and it was super isolating.

Kept getting sick,
like, on and off,

and then it got to the point
where I, like,

didn't feel good, like,
at all, ever.

- I could barely walk a block.
- My God.

- And I spent
a lot of time in bed.

I moved back home
with my parents,

and I didn't think
that, like, my life

was ever gonna get better.

I didn't think I was gonna
ever feel better.

And then they found out
that I had Lyme disease.

- OK.

- So I ended up
going to Germany,

and I did a treatment there
in a hospital for 30 days.

- Wow.

- I had, like, tubes
going into my chest.

You can see, like,
some of the scars right there.

Um, I lost, like,
a ton of my hair.

I, like, lost, like, 15 pounds
in, like, 5 days.

My God.

- Yeah, so it's been
pretty wild,

but...
- Yeah, I'd say so.

Yeah.

But after I did that treatment,
I felt way better,

and I was really healthy.

- Um, and like, that's
the important thing,

but my hearing
kept getting worse.

So the reason that
I can communicate with you

the way I can is because
I have a cochlear implant.

- And I'm still learning
with it.

I probably said "what"

a lot today.

If I'm not...

But I'll probably be
more aware of it now.
