The AFC Championship game.

The road to the Super Bowl
goes through Heinz Field right now.

[reporter] For all that the Patriots
have been through this season,

to be playing for the chance
to go to the Super Bowl,

it has to come down to one of two things,

either the Patriots
are a very good football team

or they're living on borrowed time.

[announcer] The Patriots do provide
a formidable challenge here today

and anyone who watched Tom Brady's
performance in the snow last weekend

knows the young New England
quarterback can deliver.

[Brady grunts loudly]

[announcer] Oh, boy.

He's down.

The Patriot quarterback is down,
and he's injured.

[whistle blowing]

He took it right below the knees.

Oh, boy.

[Tom Brady] It was actually the third time
that game that the same ankle got hit.

It was pretty sore, but...

I was, like,
"Oh, no, no. I wanna play."

But at that point, the coach decided,

"You know what?
I think we're just gonna stick with Drew."

[announcer] And Drew Bledsoe
has come onto the field.

Drew Bledsoe, who left the team
in week two with a chest injury.

And replaced then by Brady.

[Drew Bledsoe] When I took the field,
all of a sudden things got really quiet.

[crowd noise echoing, fading]

Obviously, the entire world was thinking,

"Okay, this guy hasn't played
for a long, long time."

You know? "That's it. Game's over."

[crowd cheering]

[announcer] What a throw by Drew Bledsoe.

[Bledsoe] But I was gonna compete
my ass off in every way that I could...

because the Super Bowl was so close.

- [loud grunt]
- [crowd groaning]

[Bledsoe] To get that close
and then not get to go...

I was never gonna let that happen.

[announcer] Back to throw.
Looks, fires, open!

Touchdown!

- Touchdown by Drew Bledsoe!
- [crowd cheering]

The New England Patriots have come
into Pittsburgh and done the unthinkable.

They defeat the Steelers
by a score of 24 to 17.

[announcer 2] Oh, my!

[Bledsoe] I can't believe it, dude.

[announcer 2] What a story this is.

Drew Bledsoe comes in
for the injured Tom Brady.

Gets big plays here.

[reporter] Is this too emotional
for you, Drew?

[Bledsoe] Very hard year. And, uh...

I'm proud that we're going
to the Super Bowl.

We shocked the world!
We shocked the world!

For all these people out here
who didn't give us a chance,

we're going to Bourbon Street.

Yeah, we're goin' to Bourbon Street.

- We're going to the Bowl!
- New Orleans, baby!

[crowd cheering]

[field announcer] And the New England
Patriots are celebrating.

They're heading to the Super Bowl
in New Orleans.

And I'm joined here by Robert Kraft,

the chairman and owner
of the New England Patriots.

I'd like to give great credit
to Coach Belichick and his staff,

and all our players who put team first.

[excited chatter]

[Robert Kraft] You know, you get
presented the trophy,

and all of a sudden, I realize,
"Holy mackerel!

I'm gonna be going to the Super Bowl."

[Kraft on field]
To the great fans of New England,

who support us in the snow,
the rain, the sun,

we say thank you.

We think it's great going
to the biggest game in this country.

[Kraft] I understood how the fans felt
'cause I was one of them.

I'd dreamt of going to the Super Bowl...

...way before we owned the team.

In 1971, when they built
the new stadium in Foxborough,

I decided I was gonna get season tickets.

I was always passionate about football.

The physicality, the teamwork...

So, I wanted to share that with my boys.

[Jonathan Kraft] I remember my dad,

he had one of those briefcases
with little locks on each side.

As a little kid you always thought
the greatest secrets in the world

were in that briefcase.
And he opened it,

and in there, there were these strips

with the old Pat Patriot logo,
and my dad said,

"You see those?
Those are season tickets to the Patriots."

The team bound our family together,

but it was a difficult time to be a fan.

[announcer] Wide open, ends up.

[announcer 2] So, what's going wrong?
Just about everything so far.

[Kraft] Seeing the dumb things being done,

I said, "Jeez, if I could own this team,
what I would do."

And was that a pipe dream?
A lot of people probably thought it was.

Would you tell him that Robert called?

[Kraft] I mean,
I was a self-made businessman

who ran a paper company.

I didn't have wads of cash
sitting in a bank account.

I knew I'd have to find a way
to get financial power,

and I realized the key
was the old Foxboro stadium.

The stadium was really outmoded.

You know, a lot of people
thought it was worthless.

[horns blaring]

But I figured out the main
source of revenue during the game

came from the parking lot and the stadium.

Over the next decade,

I made moves to buy the stadium,

and the land that the stadium sat on

at what was really a low cost.

No one realized how important that was.

[indistinct chatter]

[Kraft] There must have been 20 buyers
who came in who tried to buy the team,

but once they figured out I had control
of the revenue, they walked away.

- [reporters chattering]
- [cameras clicking]

[man] ...done a marvelous job.

[news anchor] At a news conference
this afternoon, James Orthwein announced

he is selling the team
to a local buyer, Robert Kraft.

[applause]

My objective in doing this is to help
bring the championship to New England.

We didn't do this to be a doormat
for any of the teams.

We do like to win.

We plan to work very closely
with Coach Parcells

to have a very special team.

[Parcells] I was rooting for Kraft
because the way it was,

it was a little bit in disarray.

[faint chatter]

Prior owners, they weren't willing
to ante up for the good players.

- So when Kraft came in...
- [blows whistle]

...I was hopeful he'd be more supportive.

[news reporter] Some are so convinced
that the new Patriots owner Robert Kraft

is committed to winning
that they were willing to wait out

the night and early hours
for those choice seats.

Finally, we have a coach that's committed,
an owner that's committed,

and they're gonna spend the money
and get us a winner.

[Bledsoe] To have a coach that won
two Super Bowls for a different team,

and to have the owner intimately
involved in the running of the team,

and not just, you know,
some billionaire that owns a toy,

there was a sense of excitement that,
"Okay, maybe things could change here."

[announcer] Bledsoe stands in.

Boom. Touchdown.

[announcer 2] Well, there's the equivalent
of the victory cigar

as Bob Kraft dons the coat.

[Parcells] Kraft's first year there,
the team was improving

and it was just on the verge
of doing something special.

[announcer] Introducing the American
Football Conference champions,

the New England Patriots!

[crowd cheering]

[Jonathan Kraft] In '97,
the team was going to the Super Bowl.

We were really excited about the future.

But at the same time,

it was clear that something was up
with Bill Parcells.

[fans chanting] Tuna! Tuna! Tuna!

[Parcells] We finally got some success,

but I felt like Kraft
wasn't always in line

with the things that I knew to be
in the best interest of building a team.

Kraft had no real background in football,

and in his inexperience,
took the draft away from me

and he gave it to somebody else.

I felt like some people
that were incompetent

were making decisions
for the organization personnel-wise.

And I didn't like it.

And I knew I wasn't going
back to the Patriots.

[newscaster] The Pats meet the media
in about a half hour

and everyone is waiting
to hear what Parcells has to say,

as the stories intensify that Sunday
will be his last game

as the head coach
of the New England Patriots.

[reporter] The reports continue today
that Bill Parcells is out.

Would you comment on that?

[Bledsoe] That was a frustrating thing
for us as players.

For us to go to the Super Bowl
after being the worst team in the league,

you know, that was
a pretty big accomplishment.

And that was not the story
during the week of the Super Bowl.

The story was whether or not Parcells
was gonna go to the Jets.

Well, if he has an unbelievable
Super Bowl magic or not,

he's headed for New York, right?

[sports journalist, over phone]
I can't imagine that there is a scenario

that he will not be
with the Jets next year.

This is a bad marriage
between Bob Kraft and Bill Parcells.

Even if they're both hugging
the Vince Lombardi trophy

by 10:00 Sunday night,
they will not be hugging each other

by about 9:00 Monday morning.

[stadium announcer] Let's meet
the American Football Conference champion,

New England Patriots.

When your team's in the Super Bowl,
you want all the energy focused

on doing everything possible
to allow the team to win.

That didn't happen at that Super Bowl.

All the oxygen was taken out of the room
with Bill's dalliance with the Jets.

[announcer]
Favre back to throw his first one.

Throwing deep. Has a man open.

Touchdown, Green Bay.

The final score,
the Green Bay Packers, 35,

the New England Patriots, 21.

[Kraft] With Coach Parcells,
I didn't feel he always put team first.

He was making decisions
that were best for Bill Parcells

as opposed for the New England Patriots.

I promised myself in the future

I would find a coach
that truly put team first.

[helicopter whirring]

[sports live announcer] Live from
New Orleans, site of Super Bowl 36.

[reporter] You remember five years ago,

Patriots owner Bob Kraft's first trip
to the Super Bowl was memorable,

but it was not pleasant.

[Kraft] I feel very fortunate our family
is back in the Super Bowl.

We're focusing on that and hopefully
doing everything we can

to get everyone on the same page

so we can bring a championship home
to the fans in New England.

I have learned in life you can never
have enough quality people around you,

and Bill Belichick's always
done what's best for the team.

[commentator] The New England Patriots,

expected to be mediocre at best,
yet here they are.

[commentator 2] St. Louis Rams will square
off against the New England Patriots

for football's top-prize,
the Vince Lombardi trophy.

[cameras clicking]

[press member] Bill, all year
the team has been very focused

and very able to be business-like.

During this week, have you noticed
any kind of heightened awareness?

[Bill Belichick] There's definitely
a heightened awareness

or a little bit more focus than normal.

And I think that's been
pretty good all year.

But there's no question.

This is a special week and a special game

and everybody realizes what's at stake.

[whistle blowing]

[Damien Woody] That Super Bowl week,

I remember coming in,
and Bill addressed the team...

[Belichick] Let's get it in.
Let's get it in.

[Woody] He said, "You know what?
We're all in this thing together.

If you're able to put aside
your personal gain for the team...

and do your job...

...we'll win. We will beat them."

Last night, the Patriots moved to a hotel
here on the outskirts of New Orleans

to get away from the crush
of the French Quarter

to get things as back to normal
as they possibly can.

[David Nugent] Nice out. Swimming pool.

[Belichick] We got down there,
at the hotel.

My main thing with the players was, okay,
you know, we got a lot of work to do.

Just want to make sure everything's okay.
If there's any problems,

you know, let me know.

Lawyer, uh, came over and was, um...
upset about his room.

[laughs]

Oh, shit.

Ohh!

[Lawyer Milloy] Yeah, man, we, you know,
we get to the hotel,

my room was so small,
I think it came with a oxygen tank.

[Nugent] Look at this room.
Are you kidding me?

[Ernie Adams] You know,
the players would like nice rooms.

Not the little dinky singles.

You don't want sleeping
in a little twin bed

where your arms are falling off the sides
and your feet are off the end.

[Belichick] That was the furthest thing
from my mind, and I just kind of said,

"You know, Lawyer, look,
you can have the head coach's room.

I don't really care.
And if that's not good enough for you,

that's the best I can do. Here you go."

[Nugent] A walk-in closet?

- My goodness.
- [Nugent laughs]

- Yeah.
- Are you tripping?

[Belichick] And so the rest of the week,
you know,

it was kinda, "Lawyer, is everything okay?
You know, is your view okay?

Your room good?
You got enough space in there?"

You know, and so we kinda
joked about that all week.

- [whistle blows]
- [laughter]

[Milloy] I think Coach did that to kinda
reemphasize team is always first.

And it kind of just set the tone
to get ready for what was coming.

[commentator] Seemingly a David
versus Goliath script in this Super Bowl.

The New England Patriots,
14-point underdogs,

feeling they can slay
the mighty dragon... eh, Rams.

[Belichick] As I watched the Rams
prior to Super Bowl 36,

the Rams led the league in offense
and had an all-star cast of players.

[commentator] Forget Ringling Brothers,
the Rams are the greatest show on earth.

[Belichick] They had a complete team,

speed and explosiveness
on all sides of the ball.

[announcer] And a touchdown!

[commentator 2]
The Rams are a dynasty in waiting.

They come here as the best offense
in the land,

the third best defense in football.

They won eight games in a row,
the overwhelming favorites.

[announcer] Warner straight back to pass,
unload, right sideline,

Marshall's there, touchdown...

[host] You can't find anybody to even say

- New England can win the game.
- [host 2] No.

Every guy you talk to just says
"How many will the Rams win by?"

- [host 2] But here's what I find amazing.
- This is dead, dull, boring, done.

[announcer 2] At the 20, ten, five.

[host] And with the competitive state
of the game in question,

our lead story for the fourth straight day
is Brady and Bledsoe.

- [host 2] Oh, enough!
- Michael, I know you hate this story.

But the truth is
there are no other stories.

This game has no juice whatsoever
and you know

you've got nothing other to write
than Brady and Bledsoe.

[The Edge] There's been
a lot of nonsense written

about the whole Brady versus Bledsoe issue
over the last few days.

And we are not here
to add to that controversy today.

However, it does
have to be said that Bledsoe

- has a superior long pass, and...
- [laughter]

I think that, um, Brady's sore ankle
is a bit of a problem.

I've had one myself.

Anyway, we are not here
to get into that.

- We are here to bring peace.
- We're here to bring peace.

[newscaster] After today's practice,

Bill Belichick is expected
to make his decision

on the one hard question left
in the Big Easy:

Who'll be his starting quarterback
on Sunday?

The one who's started every one
of the Patriots' 12 wins

or the one who shook off 17 weeks of rust

to save the team's season
last weekend in Pittsburgh?

[Bledsoe] At the end of practice,
I got called up to Belichick's hotel room.

He just sat down and he goes,
"Tommy's ankle looks good.

We've decided that you know, we can
only get one quarterback ready to go,

and we're gonna go with Tom,
um, this week." And, uh...

Oh, man. That was...
that was a bitter pill.

That was a bitter, bitter pill to swallow.

[fans chattering excitedly]

[Brady] You know, I think
from Drew's standpoint, he wanted to play.

And it's a tough situation
for a veteran like that to be in.

[interviewer] What's your reaction
to this decision, Drew?

Uh, you know,
I'm obviously very disappointed.

But I look back, I'm very happy of
all the decisions Coach Belichick made.

As he was in control, and, uh...

And I'm happy he made that choice.

As the case has been all year,
you know, I'll, uh...

...you know, do whatever I can
to help him to play well in this game.

And, uh...

[Tedy Bruschi] I mean, Drew could have
messed a lot of things up.

But as frustrated as Drew was,
he still was very supportive to Tom.

That meant a lot for me to see.

All the stuff Belichick says, like
doing your job and putting the team first,

Drew was, like, living that.

I mean there's
a hundred-million-dollar quarterback

doing what's best for the team.

That's where I think
the Patriot Way started.

[stadium crowd cheering]

and welcome to Super Bowl 36.

Let's meet the National Football
Conference Champion, the St. Louis Rams.

[Bruschi] When you're growing up
as a young football player,

your moment that you dream of is
when you get introduced in the Super Bowl.

[stadium announcer]

They say your name, they say your number,
they say your position,

and you run out for the world to see.

[stadium announcer]

[Bruschi] It's almost like
a culminating moment for a player.

[announcer] And the New England Patriots
just filing into the tunnel

to be recognized and introduced.

[Bruschi] So we're like,
"What are we're gonna do?"

Then I heard someone scream in the back,
"We're going out as a team!"

It's all of us together.

That's how we got here.
We got here because we're a team.

We about to shake up the world.

choosing to be introduced as a team,

here are the American
Football Conference champions,

the New England Patriots.

Watching this, I was thinking,

"Holy shit! Here they come. My team."

"Please welcome..."
I'm getting chills right now.

"...the New England Patriots."

Tribalism... put to the side.

We were one.

We figured that we were America's team.

Our colors, everything.

We felt an obligation because of 9/11
and what our nation had went through.

Our theme was we're all one.

[Mike Martz] I don't know
what it meant to America.

I do know that when
I stood on the sideline

and looked up there and saw
red, white and blue

and Patriots fans all over the place,
I thought,

"Oh, for cryin' out loud."

America loves an underdog. And I get it.

But that being said,
it pissed me off more than anything else.

And we'll shove it up their rear end
no matter what.

[starting whistle blows]

[announcer] Adam Vinatieri to kick it off
from here in New Orleans.

And he approaches the ball
and Super Bowl 36 is underway.

[crowd cheering]

And Murphy breaks right out of the pack.

And let's watch him go to work.

[announcer 2] They talk about this is
the greatest show on turf,

not only the best offense in football now,
but maybe the best offense ever.

- Do it, Rams! Come on!
- Kick it off!

[Ty Law] They were a more
skilled football team,

but we didn't think
they were a very tough team.

I was like, "You know what? I'm tired
of hearing about the track team.

I'm tired of hearing about how fast,
how athletic they are.

This is football.
We about to rock y'all's ass."

[wheezing scream]

There you go. Fucking pound 'em!

[Richard Seymour] We knew
that we had to play a different style.

We gotta be physical,
we gotta be tough, we gotta be nasty.

The guys you didn't want to see
in a dark alley.

[heavy grunts]

[announcer 2] They've been getting
to Kurt Warner today.

They've been knocking him around.

Bill Belichick told me,
"The only way we can win this game

is we have to be more physical on 'em,

and we have to find other ways to score
other than our offense."

[announcer] And Warner goes back to throw
and here's the blitz.

Ty Law picks it off
and takes it to the house.

And the Patriots take the lead.

[Law] I ain't gonna lie.

That was probably one of the easiest
interceptions that I've had in my life.

Those are the kind of interceptions
that we typically drop,

'cause it's like,
"You bullshittin'? He ain't... Tsk!"

"I know... What you talking about, Kurt?
I know you ain't about to throw that."

[Martz] Something happened that game,
and Bill was really good about this.

According to his players, he said,
"Listen, latch on to these receivers,

on the jersey, and hang on.

They're not gonna call holding
or pass interference in the Super Bowl.

They're not gonna do it.
And when they do...

all right, stop doing it.

And then go back
and do it a little bit later." You know.

So that's what they did.

I never, ever said anything about it.

And you know why? They do it...

[mocking tears, chuckles]

Yeah, crying and all that kind of stuff.

But it's a fact.

And if you can get away with it,
get away with it.

And he did.

[announcer] Brady drops back to throw,
looks, fires right.

Touchdown, David Patten!

[all cheering]

Eight yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady.

[announcer 2] Who would have thought
that if someone's gonna explode on offense

that it's gonna be
the New England Patriots?

[Jonathan Kraft] Half time of that
Super Bowl, we're up 14 to three.

And as the team's running off the field,
my dad looks at me and he says...

Fourteen to three?

What am I gonna say if we win?

Jonathan started
scratching down some things.

I felt a little guilty.

Or superstitious.

You open your mouth to the devil
and bad things happen.

[announcer] And it's been pretty tough
to come back in a Super Bowl.

[announcer 2] I think if there's
anyone who can do it,

it would be an explosive team
like the Rams.

Go, Rams, go Rams!

[Martz] Sure, in the first half Belichick
threw some curve balls in there.

But I don't care.

We're gonna line up
and beat you with what we got.

Bring it on, buddy. Let's go.

[announcer] Warner drops
straight back to throw.

Fires down the field.
It is caught by Faulk.

Inside the ten to the eight-yard line.
And he's stopped there.

So the Rams are on the march.

Now we put you on your heels.
That's what we try to do,

put 'em on their heels.

[announcer] Second and goal
at the Pats' two.

Quarterback sneak. Touchdown, Kurt Warner.

Walked into the end zone, untouched.

Boy, that was easy, huh?

And the Patriots' lead
is now down to a touchdown.

[Adams] We pitched a shutout basically
for 50 minutes.

And then the last ten minutes
all hell broke loose.

[announcer] The Rams' offense
has come to life in the fourth quarter.

[Bruschi] Hit his ass!

We're not giving them shit.
So let's go.

[player] We gotta make 'em beat us.

- We're not giving them anything.
- [player] No penalty.

I need rushers. I need rushers.
Let's go!

[announcer] Back to pass is Warner.
Looks, fires left.

It is wide open at the ten.

Inside the five, and it's out and in.
Touchdown, Saint Louis.

And the Rams have come back.

A heartbreaking fourth quarter
for the Patriots.

So it's tied at 17 to 17
with a minute 30 to play.

[announcer 2] You have to
just run the clock out.

You have to play for overtime now.

I don't think you want
to force anything here.

You don't want to do anything stupid.

[Adams] We could have knelt on it and gone
into sudden death overtime.

But then Bill came on the headset, said,
"Okay, Ernie, what do you want to do?"

And I said,
"Bill, we're a little bit out of gas.

If they get the ball again,
I'm not real sure we can stop 'em."

I mean, this drive, it's do or die.

We need to try to go get Adam Vinatieri

a shot to win it
for us here in regulation.

[Brady] I go up to Coach Belichick
and he says, "We're going."

And he says, "Just take care of the ball!"

And Drew was kind of standing next to me

and he kind of just shuffled in front
of that he says, "Fuck that."

[Bledsoe] I remember,
you know, somebody saying to Tom,

like, "Hey, be careful."

Like, "No, we're big underdogs
in this game.

Nobody expected you to be here.
Nobody expected us to be here."

You know, fuck it, man, go.

[announcer] Brady's in the shotgun.

[announcer 2] I don't agree with
what the Patriots are doing right here.

Backed up inside their own 20,
no time-outs left.

I would play for overtime.

And everyone was like,
"Oh, shit," you know,

"we're gonna throw it?"

My confidence was up and down that year.

And I really didn't know
what I was capable of.

But to know that I had the confidence
and trust of my teammates.

For me, it was like,
let's go out there and sling it.

[announcer] Brady takes the snap.
Here's the rush.

Now he gets away, throws over the middle.

It is caught there after the 21-yard line.

Clock running to 1:09 to play.

They gotta hurry.

Brady takes the direct snap.

Dumps it off to the left,
complete to J.R. Redmond.

Thirty, 35, to the 40, and a first down.

The clock winding down on one of the great
Super Bowl games ever played.

Steps up, fires down the field, caught!

Troy Brown at the 40.

He's to the left of the 37-yard line.
And goes out of bounds.

[announcer 2] And now I kinda like
what the Patriots are doing.

[Kraft] So there we are,
driving right down the field.

It's almost surreal.

[announcer] There's Brady.
He dumps it to Wiggins.

Down to the thirty and now,
no question about it, they are in range.

Maybe he can spike it right here
and stop the clock.

[announcer 2] That's what he'll do.
He'll spike it here.

[announcer] Seven seconds.

They got Vinatieri in range.

[Kraft] I think back to sitting
in the stands

and dreaming of winning a Super Bowl.

It meant so much to all of us.

Let's go!

[Kraft] And finally, we were so close.

[announcer] All right,
with seven seconds remaining,

Adam Vinatieri will try to win it
with a 47-yard field goal attempt.

[Kraft] We waited 42 years.

It all came down to this.

[announcer] Kick is on the way.

field goal and the game is over!

And the Patriots are Super Bowl champions!

And it hit me. I was like, "Whoa."
