after the other Gospels the 0:46 other Gospels were already in use in extant and thus John does not follow the 0:53 pattern of the other Gospels as he records for us the life of Christ but 1:00 John pretty much sums up his Gospel 1:05 doing or taking the last part of the Ministry of Christ spends a lot of time 1:12 in the last year of Christ in his gospel it was thought to be written from 1:20 Ephesus at 78 D when the Roman troops 1:26 came in and conquered Jerusalem destroying the city killing a million 1:32 over a million Jews many of the Jews escaped before Jerusalem fell and most 1:41 of the church did escape and did not suffer the destruction by Titus and the 1:48 Roman troops they were directed by a word of prophecy to leave the city on 1:55 that night and for some unknown reason as they left out of the east gate 2:02 according to the direction of the prophecy somehow Titus did not have the 2:08 troops positioned at the east gate that night and thus the church escaped John 2:14 went to Ephesus and according to the traditions he took with him Mary the 2:23 mother of Jesus and there at Ephesus John continued the ministry and there 2:31 are early church records that speak of John's ministry there we know that John 2:37 was then they attempted to kill him they 2:43 boiled him in oil but it didn't have any fatal effect upon him and so he was 2:51 exiled to the island of Patmos and the thing is you see God wasn't through with 2:58 him yet God wanted to give to him the book of Revelation and so the book of 3:03 Revelation was written from the Isle of Patmos but the Gospel of John is the last of 3:12 the Gospels written it is a later work and so John in his gospel is thinking 3:23 probably of the Greek mind because he has moved into a culture that is a 3:30 Grecian culture in Ephesus and so he's probably thinking of a gospel that would 3:38 appeal to the Greeks its appeal is to 3:43 the unbeliever and so at the end of the Gospel he said Jesus did a lot of other 3:50 things that are not recorded but these have been recorded that you might 3:56 believe that Jesus is the Messiah and by believing have life in his name he 4:04 closes his gospel saying if all of the things that were done by Jesus were 4:11 written down there probably would not be enough books in the libraries to give a 4:18 full account of all that Jesus had done so the Gospel of John is a great book to 4:27 encourage a person who is an unbeliever to read because again God said his word 4:36 would not return void it would accomplish the purposes for which he had 4:41 sinned it and if John was written that people might believe that Jesus was the 4:48 Messiah and by believing have life in his name then as a person reads the book of John 4:57 that will be accomplished in their heart they both understand that Jesus was 5:04 indeed the Messiah so with the unbeliever in mind and especially the 5:11 Greek mindset he declares in the beginning was the word the logos now in 5:20 the Greek in their philosophy they say 5:30 that behind a word is a thought 5:35 in other words words express our thoughts and behind the thought is a 5:45 thinker you can't have a thought without a thinker so in the beginning was the 5:53 word and with that comes the he tells you now that behind the word the Word 6:01 was with God the Word was God and the 6:07 same was in the beginning with God John's plain declaration the Word was 6:17 God most cults fail on this point of 6:29 acknowledging that the Word was God but 6:35 you can't make it any plainer or clear than what John has declared the Jehovah 6:42 Witnesses for instance say that the word 6:47 or that Jesus was the Michael the 6:54 Archangel the Mormon say that he was the brother of Lucifer that he is a created 7:03 being it's interesting that as Matthew 7:09 begins his gospel he begins it with 7:14 Abraham he gives you the genealogy of Jesus and he traces him back to Abraham 7:21 and then he tells of the birth of Jesus his baptism and then his ministry mark 7:29 doesn't tell us about the birth of Jesus but he does tell us about his baptism 7:36 and his ministry Luke goes back to the 7:43 account of the announcement to Zechariah the Prophet of the birth of John the 7:51 Baptist the forerunner of Jesus he goes back to the announcement to Mary of the 7:57 birth of Jesus and then he tells us and gives us the account of the birth and 8:03 things that transpired around the birth and some of the early life of Jesus he 8:10 in his genealogy takes you back to Adam but John goes back one step further in 8:20 the beginning now when was that was 8:28 there a beginning you know in the 8:33 beginning was the word when the 8:39 beginning was he was already there in the beginning was the word past tense 8:46 and the Word was with God and the Word 8:51 was God and then he tells us that all things were made by him and without him 9:01 was not anything made that was made the book of Genesis begins in the 9:09 beginning God created the heavens and 9:14 the earth the Bible doesn't try to tell us anything about how long ago the 9:22 beginning was but in the beginning God 9:28 he was there before the beginning God is 9:33 timeless he is outside of the time continuum and so here John sort of takes 9:41 up much as does Genesis going back to the very beginning was the word the Word 9:48 was with God the Word was God he was in the beginning with God and all things 9:55 were made by him in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth 10:02 the Word was God and all things were made by him 10:09 it is interesting there are many passages in the New Testament that do 10:15 ascribe the creation to Jesus there in 10:22 Colossians verse 16 of chapter 1 for by him we're all things created that are in 10:31 heaven that are in earth visible invisible whether they are Thrones or 10:39 dominions or principalities or powers speaking of the angelic beings all 10:45 things were created by him and for him not only is Jesus the Creator but he is 10:53 the object of creation they were created for him so know this that's why you 11:02 exist he created you for him so in the 11:09 book of Revelation chapter 5 as they're praising of chapter 4 the response of 11:17 the elders to the worship of the cherubim they say thou art worthy O God 11:23 to receive glory and honor for you have created all things and for your good 11:28 pleasure they are created I think it's extremely important that we recognize 11:34 and realize that I was created for him but then Paul takes us one step further 11:41 and he said he is before all things pre-existing all things and by him he 11:48 said all things consist that word consists is held together God 11:59 created things visible and invisible God created the visible things out of 12:04 invisible things we're made up of atoms and molecules which cannot really be 12:11 seen but here we are created out of invisible things and this great mystery 12:19 of creation and one of the mysteries is 12:25 that things are made up of atoms but atoms are sort of a mystery in that they 12:34 are made up of the nucleus of the atom which is little protons and around the 12:42 protons there revolve these electrons 12:48 now columns law of electricity talks about the expelling force of like 12:57 particles in other words positive 13:03 charges have a repelling force against positive charges opposites attract 13:10 I guess that goes with people too I hear merry japa zits attract but the likes 13:18 repel so be careful about that you know who you think it involved with but there 13:28 is so much expelling force of positive 13:35 charges that if you had one gram of just 13:41 positive charges on the North Pole and one gram on the South Pole the pressure 13:51 against them it would take 1800 pounds to hold that gram of protons 14:01 on the North Pole and on the South Pole there would be that much repelling force 14:07 at that distance that the we do know that the atom bomb was created by 14:14 releasing the positive charges that are 14:19 in the heart of an atom and we know the tremendous power that is generated when 14:25 we can upset the nucleus of the atom and allow the protons to act according to 14:31 the natural bent of being pushed apart 14:37 somehow they're glued together the scientists made up they called it the atomic glue the Masons but that theory 14:45 sort of went by the board the mystery is what holds the universe together the 14:56 power that holds matter together and and 15:02 that's what is revealed here by him all things are held together or all things 15:08 insist in the book of Hebrews God who at 15:14 different times and in different manners spoken the times passed to our fathers by the prophets has in these last days 15:21 spoken unto us by his son whom he has appointed the heir of all things by whom 15:29 also he made the world's so John is 15:34 telling us here right off that he is the creator all things were made by him 15:41 without him was not anything made that was made and in him was life and the 15:48 life was the light of men the hope for 15:55 us as in Jesus Christ in him life 16:00 eternal life and the light shyness in darkness and 16:08 the darkness comprehended it not and so Jesus shining in the darkness but 16:17 the darkness is not able to comprehend or apprehend this light there was a man 16:28 who was sent from God whose name was John so he's now going to tell us a 16:35 little bit about the mystery or the Ministry of John the Baptist the same 16:42 came for a witness to bear witness of the light that all men through him might 16:49 believe and he was not that light but he 16:54 was sent to bear witness of that light and that is the true light that is Jesus 17:00 which lights every man that comes into the world where he was in the world 17:05 referring again to Jesus the world was made by him a second assertion that he 17:12 was the creator and the world knew him not now we are celebrating the advent of 17:21 our Savior into the world we are not certain of the dates and that isn't 17:28 important we are celebrating the fact that Jesus came to this earth and any 17:36 date is all right as far as the celebration of that very fact people get 17:42 caught up because it's pretty provable that Jesus wasn't born December 25th 17:49 that our celebration what we call Christmas is sort of an adaptation of a 17:57 pagan holiday but you know it doesn't 18:02 make that much difference well it does I guess the way some people celebrate if they are pagans and they 18:08 celebrate raided in a pagan way and if you are looking forward to the office parties 18:14 and getting drunk and so forth and egon have your holiday but don't call it 18:19 Christmas calling Saturnalia like the Romans did but to us it is a day that we 18:27 set aside to celebrate the coming of Jesus into the world he was in the world 18:33 the world was made by him but sadly the 18:39 world knew him not he came to his own that would be the Jewish race but the he 18:50 came to his own and his own received him not but as many did receive him to them 18:58 he gave the power to become the sons of God even to those who believed upon his 19:05 name which were born not of blood nor of 19:11 the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of God our new birth as many as 19:23 received and became the sons of God how did I become a son of God by a new birth 19:28 the birth was not by the will of man but by the will of God 19:35 so not the will of the flesh I'm born of 19:42 the Spirit by the will of God the word was made flesh he dwelt among us we 19:48 beheld his glory the glory of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and 19:54 truth so basically as you read this you can start off with verses 1 and 2 in the 20:02 beginning was the word the Word was with God the Word was God the same was in the beginning with God and the Word was made 20:10 flesh that is God became man he dwelt 20:16 among us and we beheld his glory as of the only begotten of the Father full of 20:22 grace and truth coming back to John he bore witness of 20:28 him he cried say this was he of whom I speak he that came 20:35 after me is preferred before me for he was before me free existence of Jesus 20:44 and his fullness have all we received and grace of his fullness and we all 20:52 received and grace for grace John came 20:57 to bear witness of the coming of the Messiah he was to go before him to 21:04 prepare the hearts of the people to receive him and John was not out to 21:10 promote himself or to promote his own ministry concerning Jesus he said he 21:16 must increase and I must decrease and every one of us should actually have 21:24 that same attitude as John he must increase I must decrease so of his 21:34 fullness have we all received grace for grace for the law it was given by Moses 21:42 but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ so man through the law related to God it 21:54 was the means by which sinful man could relate to a holy God it was through the 22:00 sacrifices of the law that the sins were covered and the door was open for men to 22:08 fellowship with God through the peace offerings of the Old Testament but 22:15 there's a new covenant that God has made and it is the covenant of grace and it 22:22 is by the grace of God but it was made possible through Jesus Christ and 22:28 through his sacrifice and it's interesting all of the sacrifices of the 22:35 Old Testament were just pointing a heads to the sacrifice of Jesus and so 22:45 grace and truth came by Jesus Christ no man had seen God at any time but the 22:54 only begotten Son which is in the bosom of the Father he has manifested him no 23:02 man has seen God at any time because as Jesus said to the woman of Samaria God 23:08 is a spirit they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth and 23:14 no man can see his spirit and so no man has seen God at any time there were 23:21 manifestations there were men who thought that they saw God and in Jacob 23:30 wrestled with the angel of the Lord and 23:36 he said that he had seen God but in reality it was the manifestation and 23:44 Jesus is the manifestation of God so no 23:49 man has seen God at any time but the only begotten son who is in the bosom of 23:56 the Father he has manifested in this is the record of John when the Jews sent 24:04 priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him just who are you and he 24:11 confessed and he denied not but he confessed I am NOT the Messiah they were 24:18 wondering John concerning John he was an interesting character and he was 24:26 baptizing down at Beth Beth Abra which 24:31 is right towards the upper end of the 24:37 Dead Sea not too far from Jericho and that's where John was baptizing and they 24:47 came out and they said just who are you because if you baptize someone you 24:55 should have some authority for baptizing them and that's basically what they were 25:00 looking for who gave you the authority to baptize just who are you and he 25:07 confessed to them I'm not the Messiah so they said well who are you then are 25:15 you Elijah and he said I am not now this 25:21 creates a little bit of a problem in that Jesus in Matthew's Gospel and 25:31 speaking of John the Baptist said if you can receive it this is Elijah of whom 25:37 the prophets paid Mike Malachi said that the Lord would send Elijah before the 25:45 face of the Lord to turn the hearts of the children to their fathers and so forth so John is denying that he is 25:53 Elijah how can that be when Jesus said believe you can accept this or receive 25:58 it John was Elijah when Jesus was with 26:07 his disciples and talking about John the 26:14 disciples are talking about his is he himself as the Messiah they said how is 26:20 it that the scriptures say that Elijah must first come and he said he has come 26:27 and they've done with him what they would so how do you reconcile this where 26:33 John is saying no I'm not Elijah well if you go back to Luke's Gospel when the 26:41 angel was announcing to his father Zechariah that his wife Elizabeth was 26:48 going to have a son who would go before the Lord he said he will go in the 26:53 spirit and in the power of Elijah in other words he won't be the complete 27:00 fulfillment of the prophecy of malachi that jesus is coming again and that 27:09 before Jesus comes again Elijah will return and be a prophet 27:16 again to the nation of Israel and he will turn their hearts unto the father 27:24 and so in Revelation chapter 11 you have the two witnesses that come to the earth 27:31 and who ministered there in Jerusalem to the Jews and that will be the 27:38 fulfillment of the prophecy of Malachi so in a sense he's not when he's saying 27:46 I'm not Elijah I'm not the fulfillment of the prophecy of Malachi that's later 27:53 but he is of course in so they finally 27:59 said well then who are you that we might give an answer to those that sent us to 28:05 find out what do you save yourself and so he said you know I'm not the the 28:13 profit that Malachi was talking about but I'm the voice of one he's going back 28:20 to Isaiah that is crying in the wilderness make straight the way of the 28:25 Lord as said the prophet Isaiah and they 28:31 which were sent were of the Pharisees so his claim of himself I am the one that 28:40 healed that Isaiah was talking about now 28:46 it is interesting in those days when a 28:51 king was going to visit an area they 28:57 would send out people to repair the roads to level off the high spots to 29:06 fill in the ruts and the potholes so that as the king would come it would be 29:14 a smooth ride rather than a rough ride they would take the curves out as much 29:22 as possible so that was the duty of those that would go 29:28 to prepare for the king to come to an area and so Elijah I'm the Prophet that 29:38 Elijah was talking about who went out to make to tell the people make the roads 29:44 straight to prepare for the coming of the king Jesus Christ so they asked him 29:55 and said unto him then why do you baptize if you're not the Messiah nor 30:02 Elijah nor the other prophet now that other prophet was the one that Moses 30:09 predicted as he was talking about the Messiah there will come a prophet liken 30:15 to myself and to him shall you give heed so are you the Prophet that Moses was 30:24 saying was going to come and John answered them saying I am baptizing with 30:30 water but there is standing one among 30:35 you whom you do not know he it is who 30:41 comes after me he is preferred before me whose shoe latchet I'm not worthy to 30:49 unloose I'm not unworthy to loose his sandal these things were done in Bethabara 30:59 beyond Jordan where John was baptizing now the next day after this questioning 31:07 of John he saw Jesus coming unto Him and he said behold the lamb of God that 31:16 takes away the sin of the world 31:24 it would be interesting and probably in heaven we will find out the answer but 31:31 it would be interesting to know how many lambs under the law have been slain as 31:41 sacrifices for sin no doubt into the 31:47 millions it'll be an interesting trivia thing in heaven to discover just how 31:55 many lambs sacrificed none of them could 32:00 take away sin none of them could provide a removing of sins they did provide a 32:09 covering for sin it took the blood of 32:16 the Lamb of God Jesus Christ to take away our sins so John is here declaring 32:25 behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world this is he of whom 32:38 I said he was coming after me he was 32:43 preferred before me for he was before me again the acknowledgment of the pre 32:51 existence of Jesus and I knew him not 32:57 but that he should be made manifest to Israel therefore am I come baptizing 33:05 with water and John bear record saying I saw the Spirit descending from heaven 33:11 like a dove and it abode upon him and I knew him not but he that sent me to 33:17 baptize with water said to me upon whom you will see the spirit descending and 33:23 remaining the same is he that baptizes with the Holy Spirit in Acts chapter 1 33:33 just before Jesus ascended into Evon he told his disciples to wait in 33:41 jerusalem for the promise of the father for he said John indeed baptized with 33:49 water unto repentance but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few 33:57 days and so he was instructing them just before he ascended wait here in 34:04 Jerusalem in a few days you're gonna be baptized with the Holy Spirit now here John is saying that he was 34:12 baptizing with water but the one who sent him to baptize told him upon whom 34:17 he saw the spirit descending and abiding he was going to baptize them with the 34:23 Holy Spirit John's baptism was a baptism 34:29 of repentance John's message was repent the kingdom of heaven is at hand and 34:37 water was the element in which John was baptizing the people John was the 34:44 Baptizer water was the element and the issue was repentance John said there's 34:51 one who's coming after me he's mightier than I am I'm not worthy to untie his sandals and he's gonna baptize you with 35:00 the Holy Spirit and with fire and so Jesus is the Baptizer the element in 35:11 which you are baptized by Jesus is the Holy Spirit and the issue is power you 35:20 will receive power jesus said when the Holy Spirit comes upon you to be 35:26 witnesses of me both in Jerusalem all Judea Samaria and to the uttermost parts 35:32 of the earth many people have been baptized in John's 35:38 baptism the baptism of repentance acknowledging their repenting of sin and 35:45 wanting to live a new life not after the flesh that life was buried in the 35:50 waters of baptism as many as you were baptized were buried with Christ but 35:57 many people have not yet experienced that baptism by Jesus the baptism with 36:04 the Holy Spirit and their lives are not empowered to do the work of Christ and 36:12 the power of witnessing because they need that baptism by Jesus Christ 36:20 so John said I saw and I bore record that this is the Son of God and so again 36:33 those that are you know here is John right here in the first chapter in the beginning was the word the Word was with 36:38 God the Word was God and now John gives the witness I bear 36:44 witness this is the Son of God so again the next day after John was standing 36:51 with two of his disciples and looking upon Jesus as he walked he said behold 36:58 the lamb of God and the two disciples heard him speak and they followed Jesus 37:05 then Jesus turned and he saw them following and he said unto them what are 37:11 you seeking and they said rabbi which is to say and 37:17 being interpreted Master where do you live and he said come and see and so 37:24 they came and they saw where he was living and they abode with him that day for it was about the tenth hour or it was 37:31 getting late in the afternoon about four o'clock now one of the two which heard John speak and followed him was Andrew 37:39 who was Simon Peters brother and he 37:44 first found his own brother Simon and he said to him we have found the Messiah 37:49 which is by interpretation the Christ now I think that it is important that 37:56 when we read of Jesus and we read of 38:02 Jesus Christ or we read the Lord Jesus Christ we 38:09 realize that that's not first middle and last name Lord is his title that is what 38:18 he is to us he's my lord my master that that 38:25 signifies relationship my relationship to him as Lord Jesus is his name it is 38:34 the Greek for Joshua which means Jehovah is salvation but 38:42 that's his name thou shalt call his name Jesus for he 38:47 shall save his people from their sin the the angel told Mary to call his name 38:55 Jesus later Joseph when he was trying to figure things out the angel assured that 39:02 that which was conceived in Mary was from the Holy Spirit she was to bring 39:07 forth the son he was to call his name Jesus Jehovah schewe Christ is the Greek 39:18 word for anointed and it is the Greek translation of the Hebrew with shock or 39:25 the Messiah so when you read of Christ your reading 39:32 of the Messiah your understanding that he is the promised Messiah the promised 39:40 Messiah of the Old Testament as God was promising to ascend the Anointed One the 39:46 Messiah and that is Christos Christ is the Anointed One so here he gives you 39:59 the he is we have found the Messiah which is being interpreted the Christ 40:08 he's telling you that that in Greek word Christos is the Hebrew Messiah 40:18 and he brought him to Jesus when Jesus beheld him he said you are Simon the son 40:24 of Jonah but you will be called Cephas which is by interpretation a stone so 40:33 it's interesting how that John again is interpreting because his readers are 40:39 more or less the the Greek people they understood the Greek language and so 40:45 John is careful to interpret these words into the Greek for them now the 40:56 following day Jesus went forth into Galilee and he found Philip and he said 41:04 to Philip follow me Jesus is now gathering together 41:10 disciples disciples that were later be 41:15 ordained as apostles and so Philip and 41:21 here's how the thing is just growing Philip was of Bethsaida the city of 41:28 Andrew and Peter today they have discovered the site of ancient Messiah 41:36 they didn't know where it was for such a long time but now the archaeologists are 41:42 there uncovering the remains of the city of the sayeda it was so totally 41:49 destroyed that even the location was lost for a long time you remember jesus 41:57 said woe unto the basada and it's interesting that those cities that he 42:03 announced a war upon do not exist today but the reason why b'seder was not found 42:12 is that it is now probably a mile and a half for two miles from the Sea of 42:19 Galilee it was once a a on the shores of 42:25 Galilee but over the many years the 42:30 muddy River has built up silt in the upper end 42:37 of the Sea of Galilee and the silt sort of created a silt dam and added to the 42:45 landmass there on the upper end of the Sea of Galilee so that Bethsaida is now 42:52 about a mile and a half two miles away from the Sea of Galilee and that's why 42:58 they didn't find it because they kept looking around the shores of the Sea of 43:03 Galilee for Bethsaida but that was the home of Peter and Andrew and of Philip 43:13 Philip found Nathanael so here's the way it's spreading they they they discover 43:20 Jesus and then they tell others about their discovery and that's the way the gospel has spread even today we discover 43:29 the Lord and then we share with others the wonderful discovery so Philip found 43:35 Nathanael and he said to him we have found him of whom Moses in the law and 43:41 the prophets did write Jesus of Nazareth he's the son of Joseph and Nathanael 43:47 said unto Him can any good thing come out of Nazareth Nazareth was one of 43:53 those cities that you know was sort of looked down as a rough rugged City and 44:00 can any good thing come out of Nazareth and fella said we'll come and see 44:06 and so Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and he said of him behold an Israelite 44:13 in whom there is no guile and Nathanael said unto Him how do you know me and 44:20 jesus answered and said well before Philip called you when you were under that fig tree I saw thee Nathanael 44:28 answered and said rabbi you are the son of God 44:33 you are the king of Israel and jesus answered unto him and he said because I 44:40 told you that I saw you under the fig tree do you believe you're gonna see greater things than 44:46 and he said unto Him verily verily i said to you here after you will see 44:52 heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of 45:00 Man back in Genesis when Jacob was 45:08 fleeing from his brother Esau and he had 45:15 come to Bethel and their weary tired he 45:24 lay down on the ground using a rock for a pillow and he had this dream and he 45:34 saw this ladder that was reaching up into heaven and the angels of God were 45:41 ascending and descending on this ladder 45:46 Jesus is here declaring I am the ladder by which man has access to heaven 45:55 I'm the ladder that Jacob saw in his vision no man he will say in the 46:05 fourteenth chapter can come to the Father but by me here declaring he is 46:12 the ladder by which you have access to God how true that is 46:18 now the third day is interesting John takes us in subsequent days here 46:24 there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee now Cana is over the hill from Nazareth 46:32 and the mother of Jesus was there some 46:37 believe that it was a relative perhaps of Mary that was getting married and 46:43 both Jesus was called and his disciples to the marriage so they're walking over 46:49 the hill down into the valley to this little village of Cana and when they 46:56 wanted wine and run out of wine the mother of Jesus 47:03 said unto him they have no wine now 47:10 Jesus up to this point had not performed any miracles this is the first miracle that Jesus had 47:19 performed there are some Oh writings 47:26 that talk about Jesus in his early years 47:32 healing birds and in Egypt there's the story that he made these little clay 47:39 pigeons and then gave life to them and they flew away but that's all just you 47:45 know imaginations this is the first miracle of Jesus but it would seem that 47:53 Mary is some somehow suggesting to Jesus 47:59 that he solved the problem for them saying they don't have any more wine and 48:08 he said unto her woman what have I to do with thee my hour is not yet come 48:19 evidently Mary did understand just who 48:25 her son was the angel had told her that he would be the son of the highest being known as the son of ayahs and knew that 48:33 he had these powers though they had not yet really been manifested and his 48:41 mother saith to the servants whatever he tells you to do do it she knew her son 48:53 that if there was a problem he was 48:59 wanting to take care of it here's an embarrassing problem they have the wedding feast and perhaps the groom 49:09 was poor he couldn't afford to have enough wine for the guests and so 49:19 merry presents the problems to Jesus and he sort of rebukes her in a way but yet 49:27 she knows that his heart will be touched by the need and so there were set there 49:34 six waterpots of stone after the manner of the purifying of the Jews these were 49:40 water pots to hold the water for the purification ceremonies and they 49:47 contained two or three firkins apiece 49:53 now a firkin is about nine gallons so 49:59 Jesus sent him to them fill the waterpots with water and so they filled 50:10 them up to the brim and he said unto them now draw out and bare it to the 50:17 governor of the feast and so they took it to him and the ruler the feast had 50:23 tasted the water that was made wine he didn't know from whence it was but the 50:29 servants that drew the water they knew and the governor of the piece called the bridegroom he said unto Him every man at 50:37 the beginning does set forth the good wine and then that which is worse when 50:46 they are pretty well drunk but you have kept the good wine until now this the 50:54 beginning of miracles that Jesus did in Cana of Galilee as he manifested his 51:01 glory and his disciples believed on him so things are beginning to gel now with 51:08 Jesus and His disciples after this he went down to Capernaum and his mother 51:16 and his brothers and the disciples and they continued there not many days 51:22 Capernaum became the headquarters of Jesus ministry beautiful beautifully situated there on 51:32 the Sea of Galilee it's a it's a spot that I always enjoy visiting the ruins 51:40 that are there at Capernaum are fascinating ruins they've sort of 51:47 spoiled them in a way they put up a building supposedly over the house of 51:53 Peter looks like a flying saucer it doesn't fit with all of the old 51:58 artifacts that go back to the first century but it's a the the lake there 52:06 it's just beautiful and that's where Jesus more or less made his headquarters 52:12 there at Capernaum in his earthly ministry and so many of the miracles and 52:18 so forth of Jesus were done there at Capernaum and so the Jews Passover was 52:28 at hand and Jesus went up to Jerusalem this is at the beginning of his public 52:36 ministry and it would appear that he attended three Passover's this being the 52:42 first the third he was crucified on the third Passover but Jesus went to 52:48 Jerusalem notice he went up to Jerusalem now in a in the map south is usually 53:01 considered down and north is considered up but you never do say you're going 53:09 down to Jerusalem that's just something they won't say you always go up to 53:16 Jerusalem now you might be coming from Mount Everest but you'd say well let's go up to Jerusalem the City of God you 53:24 never go down but you always go up to Jerusalem and so Jesus was going up to 53:31 Jerusalem and he found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves 53:37 and the changers of money these men were 53:45 profiteering off of people's desire to know and to worship God I think that's 53:55 the worst kind of profiteering taking advantage of people who want to serve 54:01 and worship God the changers of money the common coinage was Roman coinage it 54:09 had the image of Caesar on it and thus 54:15 they would not allow you to put into the offering coffers any Roman coins if you 54:23 wanted to give to God you couldn't give a Roman coin because of the image of 54:29 Caesar on it and so they had a lucrative little business people who want to give 54:35 to God well I'll tell you what we got some shekels here and so money changers 54:42 we will change your Roman coins for the temple shekel so that you can give to 54:48 God but what they were doing was charging exorbitant rates of exchange so 54:56 that you might have say a dollar in 55:02 Roman coins and they would give you maybe 60 cents worth of shekels so that 55:10 it was ripping off the people who were wanting to give to God and giving or 55:18 making a sacrifice the sacrifice had to 55:24 be perfect that could not have any spot or blemish so to bring a sacrifice from 55:32 your own flocks the priest would examine it to see if it was without a blemish or 55:39 spot and they would examine it carefully until they could find a blemish and then 55:47 they would rebuke you for trying to offer a blemish and for a sacrifice and they would direct 55:55 you over to the stalls where they were selling certified Kosher sheep they had 56:02 already been examined by the priest and they've been accepted for sacrifices but 56:08 they would charge an exorbitant price for them in the city you could buy a 56:15 sparrow three or four of them for a penny but 56:21 they would always find some flaw in it and so they would force you to buy the 56:27 doves or whatever that they had certified as ready for sacrifice but 56:34 again paying a good price so that on his 56:40 first visit recorded to Jerusalem for the Passover well I guess there was one 56:46 when he was 12 but on this one as he is an adult in his ministry he makes this 56:53 scourge of a small chords and they drove 57:00 them all out of the temple now I don't know how you pictured Jesus when you 57:07 think of him as sort of a effeminate looking you know oh gentle Jesus meek 57:13 and mild look upon this little child remember he was a carpenter he was a 57:20 rugged outdoor man I mean he looked at 57:27 this he became so incensed over it he makes this little scourge this little 57:34 wimp and he begins to drive them out he overturns the tables 57:41 he sets the animals free he's creating a real hubbub right there in the temple 57:48 precincts and he said unto them that sold the doves take these things out of 57:57 here don't make my father's house a house of merchandise and the angels 58:04 remember the disciples remembered that it was written the zeal of thine house has 58:10 eaten me up Psalm 69 it's interesting Psalm 69 is one of the most quoted 58:18 Psalms in the New Testament and you'll 58:23 find a lot of quotations here in John of Psalm from Psalm 69 the psalm that 58:29 declared the zeal of thine house has eaten me up the it's it's angered me 58:36 it's upset me to see what's going on then answered the Jews and said to him 58:42 what sign do you show us seeing that you do these things it's the same thing with 58:49 John the Baptist who are you who gave you the authority to do this and so 58:56 there they're now challenging Jesus just who gave you the authority to come in 59:03 and to do this and jesus answered and said unto them you want to sign destroy 59:11 this temple and in three days I will raise it up then said the Jews 46 years 59:24 was this temple in building and you will rear it up in three days but he was 59:34 speaking of the temple of his body he was talking about his death and his 59:40 resurrection you want to sign it'll be the resurrection that's the great sign 59:47 that Jesus is the Son of God another 59:52 time when they were asking for a sign he said a wicked and an adulterous 59:58 generation is looking for science but no sign will be given to it but the sign of 1:00:04 the prophet Jonah for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of 1:00:10 the whale so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth and so the signs were 1:00:18 not in the miracles that Jesus wrought the sign the ultimate sign would be his 1:00:25 resurrection and so if you will read in conjunction with this first Corinthians 1:00:33 chapter 15 you will read the importance of the resurrection for if there is no 1:00:41 reckon selection there is no sign if there is no sign then our faith is in 1:00:49 vain our hope is in vain our loved ones who have died they've perished and where 1:00:54 have all men most miserable but now has Jesus risen from the dead he fulfilled 1:01:02 that sight it's interesting when they have brought him for trial to try to get 1:01:12 the sentence of death one of the witnesses that came against him said 1:01:24 this man said that if you destroyed the temple he would rebuild it in three days 1:01:31 and of course that was one of the charges that was leveled against Jesus 1:01:37 but as John tells us he wasn't talking about the temple that Herod had built 1:01:42 they at the time that Jesus was there they had already been building on that 1:01:47 thing for 46 years can you imagine a 1:01:54 building today that they would still be working you will say when did you start this well 46 years ago the thing was it 1:02:04 will be 18 more years before they complete it and so they are looking at 1:02:12 Jesus and thinking that he's talking about the temple that was built by Herod 1:02:18 but he's talking about his own body the temple of his own body that you destroy 1:02:26 it and in three days I'll rise again when therefore he was risen from the 1:02:34 dead his disciples remembered that he had said unto them and they believed the 1:02:41 scripture and the word which Jesus had said all of a sudden after the 1:02:46 resurrection oh yes remember he said in three days he would 1:02:53 rebuild it now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover in the feast day many 1:03:00 believed in his name when they saw the miracles which he did now he is 1:03:05 beginning to do many miracles public miracles by which he is proving to the 1:03:11 people that he is indeed the Messiah opening the eyes of the blind and just 1:03:19 setting at liberty those that were bound and all and beginning to show them that 1:03:24 he was the Messiah through the miracles and many believed because they saw the 1:03:33 miracles but there's something interesting here Jesus did not commit 1:03:41 himself to them because he knew all men they believed in Jesus but they weren't 1:03:49 really committed to Jesus you know there's just an awful lot of people like that today they believe in Jesus but 1:04:00 they're not really committed to Jesus 1:04:08 what is their position I really don't know I am concerned I'm concerned that 1:04:23 if we would pull our Sunday morning congregation that the vast majority 1:04:33 would say oh yes I believe in Jesus but 1:04:39 they're not committed to Jesus Jesus isn't the Lord of their lives and thus 1:04:47 Jesus wouldn't commit himself to them 1:04:53 knowing that they probably didn't have what we would call a saving faith just 1:05:00 to believe but as James said you say 1:05:07 that you believe God do you think that that's something special that that's 1:05:13 supposed to do something for you you believe in God he said the devil's believe in God and 1:05:19 they fear and tremble before him so it's more than just a head knowledge Jesus 1:05:29 wouldn't commit himself to them because he knew them he knew men and he didn't 1:05:36 need that anyone should testify of men to him for he knew what was in man he 1:05:44 knew those who had a genuine faith not just because they saw miracles and they 1:05:50 said whoa that's exciting but that they had committed themselves to serving to follow him am I just a 1:05:59 believer or am I truly committed he 1:06:05 knows me he knows my heart as he committed himself to me that's the 1:06:10 important thing knowing what's in my heart father we thank you for this beginning of the 1:06:18 Gospel of John the introduction to Jesus that John does give to us and Lord we pray that you 1:06:29 will just help us to examine ourselves 1:06:35 knowing that if we would judge ourselves we won't be judged by you and Lord we do 1:06:42 believe but we realize or that there's something more than just believing that 1:06:49 you did exist believing that you were a good man believing that you were a great 1:06:56 teacher even believing that you are the son of God but there is that commitment 1:07:07 commitment of ourselves to you and lord help us that we might make that commitment that you might indeed be 1:07:16 committed to us these things Lord we pray in Jesus name Amen 1:07:24 shall we stand 1:07:29 the pastures are down here at the front to pray for you tonight who desire prayer for any cause of reason so we 1:07:36 would encourage you if you have a need in your life don't just sleep but come 1:07:42 on down and let them minister to you and God wants to help you tonight God wants 1:07:48 to work out those problems in your life and if you'll give him a chance he will 1:07:54 so may the Lord be with you watch over bless you and keep you fill 1:08:01 you with his spirit and cause your life to just overflow in the abundance that 1:08:07 he wants to bestow upon you God is so good God 1:08:20 [Music] 1:08:25 do me Jesus is real Jesus is real Jesus 1:08:38 is real he's so real to me he saved my 1:08:47 school he saved my sword 1:08:53 he saved my soul and he made me oh I 1:09:01 praise His name44266
