Each strike of the hammer

is slow and deliberate.

Each nail
in my makeshift coffin

pounded softly
so no one can hear.

I was eight months pregnant

when I disappeared.

♪ ♪

I've heard about missing
and murdered Indigenous women.

♪ ♪

I just never
expected to be one.

Growing up on the reservation,

we learned
not to fear death, but...

I just
never thought my time here

would be so short.

I suppose you want to know,
how did I get here?

I'll tell you what happened,

but I should
probably warn you,

it's a hard story to hear.

My name is Savanna Greywind,

and this is "Me Hereafter."

♪ ♪

I loved North Dakota.

It's beautiful,
and it's where I grew up.

The Red River winds north
through here into Canada--

serene, mysterious,
and full of secrets.

Back in 2014,
they pulled seven bodies

out of this river.

It's long, but seven bodies?

That's a tragedy
for my people

and for everyone
who calls this place home.

I'm from Turtle Mountain,
which is Chippewa.

And Joe was from Spirit Lake,
which is Dakota Sioux.

We met when we were teenagers,

and along came Savanna.

♪ ♪

As a kid, I lived in Fargo,

and on
the Spirit Lake Reservation

for a while,
but we moved to Fargo

for good after I graduated.

♪ ♪

She loved the city life.

But she also--
she was a country girl too.

She loved riding horse,

and so she was back and forth.

She just kind of led the way
as a bigger sister,

and, uh, she had, like,

a positive attitude
all the time.

She always wanted to work,

have nice things,
be a nice person.

She did all that.

She had
a really good personality.

She was goofy.

Always on her phone,
always on Facebook.

always taking pictures,
yeah, taking selfies.

Didn't take much
to make her happy.

She loved
being around older people,

hearing stories.

She was just--
she respected her elders.

♪ ♪

In my culture,

we call our elders
uncles and aunties.

I was an auntie myself,

and I had many of them
in the care center

where I worked
as a nursing assistant.

As soon as she got
out of high school,

that's exactly
what she wanted to do,

and she went and got her CNA,
and she started there.

My plans
were to go back to school

and take my nursing career
even further.

And my boyfriend and I
wanted to start a family.

I still remember seeing
the ultrasound picture.

Early on in her pregnancy,
she would come

and sit with me and,
"Mom, what do I need?"

Just wanted to provide
everything for her baby.

She was a hard worker.

The baby's due date
was September 20th.

I was still living
with my parents

in an apartment
on the north side of Fargo,

but my boyfriend and I were
excited to meet

our mini-us
and get our own apartment

to raise the baby.

I'd been gathering all sorts
of stuff so we could nest.

I was excited
for this baby to come out

and to experience
what I thought

would be the best year
of my life, not the last one.

♪ ♪

It's a typical Saturday.

♪ ♪

We were washing clothes,
ordered a pizza,

getting our laundry done,
and doing, you know,

the things that people do
when they got

a Saturday off, you know?

I helped as best I could.

but after taking care
of older folks all week,

all I wanted to do
was put my feet up.

That's when there was a knock
at the door.

It was my upstairs neighbor,
Brooke Crews.

♪ ♪

The Greywinds lived
in apartment two,

which was in the basement
to the left of the front door.

♪ ♪

And apartment five,
where Brooke Crews lived,

was at the very top
on the right of the stairs.

♪ ♪

I knew
of the woman in number five.

I worked at
a local retail store.

and she would come in
to the store,

um, just small talk.

Come and say, "Hey, neighbor,"
and, you know, just talk about

what was going on
around the building.

I didn't really have
a relationship with her.

I went up there
a couple of times--

Something was missing.

I think it was
my daughter's clothes

and, uh,
I think some fishing tackle

got stolen out
of our storage--

our fishing rods--

and I asked her then
if she had seen anybody.

♪ ♪

Brooke wanted me
to help her

with a sewing project.

She was gonna
give me 20 bucks.

I'd bought
all that baby stuff.

I figured, why not?

Except for one time she had
an argument with my aunt,

I had no issue with her.

Well, and I said,
"Hey, you know,

"You don't need to do that.
You just stay down here.

You know, it's only $20."

She was like,
"No, no, I'm gonna.

I got this."

Even though she just got paid,
she wanted 20 more bucks.

♪ ♪

My parents
expected me to head back down

to take my brother Casey
to work at about 2:30,

but I never showed.

♪ ♪

I was cleaning
the house and texting her.

I got no response,
no response.

And Savanna,
when you would text her,

she replied right away.

She always had her phone
always in her hand.

People in my family
knocked on the door

after I didn't respond.

Was told, you know,
"We're still working on it.

You know,
"She'll be done soon."

I kind of felt
something wasn't right

when she wasn't replying
back to me.

But I just kind of
kept doing what I was doing.

♪ ♪

Later,
when my parents went upstairs,

Brooke said I'd left
and maybe I'd gone for a walk.

She was complaining
about her feet being swollen,

so I just knew
that she didn't go for a walk.

I felt like something
was wrong right there

because I knew, for one,
Savanna was in her shorts,

and Savanna
had to get herself

all fixed up
before she went anywhere.

And two, I mean, she was
concerned about her sister

walking two blocks by herself.

So I know--
I knew something was wrong.

♪ ♪

My dad went back
upstairs to talk to Brooke.

I said, "Well, can I come in
and look for my daughter?"

I said, "Because this is
the last place she went."

And she said no.

And she was trying to act,
like, fearful of Joe.

And I said,
"I'm calling the cops."

I think everyone wonders

how they'll be remembered.

Will I only be known
as the pregnant Native girl

from Fargo who went missing?

I was so much more than that.

I was a hard worker,

a homebody who loved
hanging out with my family,

and a die-hard
country music fan.

♪ When a whole lot
of Decembers ♪

♪ Are showing in your face ♪

♪ Your auburn hair has faded ♪

♪ And silver takes its place ♪

People don't know enough

about missing and murdered
Indigenous women like me.

She was following
a few stories of Native girls

that had gone missing
and what had happened to them,

and she was just,
like, so disturbed by it.

The silence
has been deafening

where it comes to missing
and murdered Indigenous women.

There have not been
accurate numbers

of how many have gone missing,
how many have been murdered.

Now I was one of these women.

♪ ♪

The initial call was
a eight-month pregnant female

named Savanna Greywind
had gone missing.

After talking
with Joe and Norberta,

I told them
that I would go upstairs,

and I knocked
on the door of apartment five,

and the door
was answered very quickly.

Almost as soon as I knocked,
it opened.

I asked her
if I could come in and talk,

and she told me that I could.

Didn't make sense to me,
knowing that Savanna

was eight months pregnant,
why Brooke Crews

would want her
to model something

for a sewing project.

And she said, "Oh, no, no.
That's not what I was doing."

She said, "I was altering
this dress for myself.

And I just needed
an extra set of hands."

There was a dress
that was pinned.

It was laying out in the open.

So it kind of checked out,

so I wasn't
super concerned about it.

I don't know that I really
asked her if I could search.

I remember asking,
"Can I look around?

Can I just see
if Savanna is here?"

Keep in mind, I'm looking
for a 20-something year old,

eight-month pregnant woman.

I'm not going to be
opening drawers

or opening cupboards.

There weren't
many places to look.

There was the living room,
the kitchen,

one bedroom, the bathroom,

and three small closets.

That's it.

♪ ♪

I didn't need
to really do much looking.

I could see
that she was not there.

I went into the bedroom,

and laying on the bed
was Brooke Crews' boyfriend,

William Hoehn.

He just was laying on the bed
messing around on his phone.

And all I said to William was,
"Well, you're not Savanna."

And he just kind of nodded,

and I took a quick look
in the bedroom

and didn't see anything amiss,

and I went back out
to the living room

and continued talking
with Brooke.

♪ ♪

The cops came down and told me

that, well,
she said she's not there,

that she had left.

I explained to them
that Savanna's car

was there,
her keys, her wallet.

You know,
that was not like Savanna.

I remember saying,
"Well, then, I'm assuming

you want to report her
as a missing person."

And they said, "Absolutely."

So we filled out
the paperwork.

This is a missing person.

This is a 22-year-old woman

who went up
to help with a project

and seemingly left,

and we have nothing to say
that she didn't leave.

We just know that she didn't
go back to her apartment.

After Officer Bollman left,

Mom and Dad kept knocking
on Brooke's door.

♪ ♪

Yeah, I wish I would have
broke that door down.

OK, if they do that,
she's gonna call the cops.

Somebody is probably
gonna go to jail,

and Savanna's still not here.

♪ ♪

You work a case,
meet with her family,

study all kinds of things
about what occurred,

and you get to know this person

through the course
of that case.

And I came to know Savanna
as a very kind,

gentle young woman

who was very excited
about starting a family.

Norberta intuitively knew
that something was very wrong.

My parents
wouldn't let it go.

What parent would?

Late Saturday night,
they got police

to come back to the apartment.

♪ ♪

When the police
come back the second time--

and it was Samuel Bollman
that returned--

and this time he returned
with two other officers.

♪ ♪

The second time,
we again asked her

to kind of take us through
when Savanna was there.

The story didn't change.

Brooke told us what
she had told me the first time.

♪ ♪

I walked back to the bedroom,

and William
was in the same spot

that he had been in
the first time,

and he was just laying there
messing with his phone.

And I remember thinking,
"OK, the police

"are in your apartment
for the second time

"in not even 12 hours,

"and you don't even
stand up to come out?

"You don't come say hello?

♪ ♪

I looked in the closet
in the bedroom,

and the closet just had
normal closet stuff in it,

and the side of the bed just
had random household things.

♪ ♪

If it were up to my parents,

the cops would have turned
that place inside out.

Better yet, Mom and Dad
would have liked

to do
the searching themselves.

I suppose they got,
you know,

the way they got to do things.

Then I was so angered,
you know, I didn't see--

I didn't see, you know,
that there are some things

they can do and can't do.

We couldn't
tear the place apart

without Brooke's consent.

We didn't want
to push too hard

and lose
Brooke Crews' cooperation.

A pregnant woman is one
of the most vulnerable people

that anyone could imagine,

especially one
that's eight months pregnant.

Just like in the movies,

police had to look at everyone
as a potential suspect.

That even meant my parents.

I'd sent some text messages
to my boyfriend

complaining about
your typical family drama.

That didn't help the matter.

Seeing text messages where

she's clearly unhappy
with her parents,

I thought maybe she did
kind of take this as an out

and she went up to Brooke,
and maybe

she vented to Brooke Crews.

Maybe Brooke gave her
some money for a hotel,

or maybe Brooke
gave her a ride somewhere.

I thought, you know,

she's unhappy
with her family right now.

It kind of makes sense
that she hasn't talked

to them for a few hours.

The simple fact was
police, my family,

no one knew
what I went through

the moment after
I went inside apartment five

earlier that afternoon.

♪ ♪

Everything went black.

Brooke intentionally
pushed me,

and I hit my head.

She needed me knocked out,

but she also needed me alive
for one sick reason.

If you knew more about Brooke
and her boyfriend, William,

you'd understand.

It wasn't just me
she needed for her plan.

♪ ♪

♪ ♪

Brooke Crews
and William Hoehn

had been in a relationship,
uh, since about 2014.

They were living together,

but it was also
very tumultuous.

I caught them fighting

as I was going outside
a few times.

You know, I thought
it was kind of weird.

There was
domestic violence

in that relationship,
drug usage, drinking.

♪ ♪

In January of 2017,
Will had left

for a brief period of time.

It was highly toxic.

They desperately
wanted a child

to bond that relationship
and to keep them together.

During one of
their violent times

and emotionally charged times,

and she goes, "I'm pregnant."

♪ ♪

And that is really
what started the ball rolling

on this whole thing.

Now, Brooke and William
both had children,

but neither of them
had any of their children

in their custody
and truly felt

that a baby would make
their family complete.

William, in particular,

had a history of child abuse
and neglect

related to a son
from a previous relationship.

He fractured his son's skull
on a changing table

and was convicted
of child neglect and abuse.

Once Brooke
and William got together,

she lost custody
of two of her kids

from a previous marriage

and blamed it
on William's conviction.

She desperately wanted
a new baby of their own.

♪ ♪

She did not look pregnant.

She did not
look pregnant at all.

♪ ♪

Was the fact that Brooke

feigned a pregnancy
a lie or a delusion?

I don't know.

What I do know is,
at some point,

it did become a lie.

At some point, unequivocally,

Brooke knew
she was not pregnant.

♪ ♪

Brooke needed
to come up with a baby.

♪ ♪

And that's where I came in.

♪ ♪

The family
just kind of hung around.

Like, what do we do?

So my sister and I went
and made flyers at Walmart.

♪ ♪

Sunday morning,
I emailed the news.

Good evening, everyone.

A family is
desperately searching

for a Fargo woman
who is eight months pregnant.

Today, choppers
and search dogs were used

to try and find
Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind.

She's been missing
for more than 48 hours now,

and why family believes
she may be in danger.

We had called family.

We're like, "Well, we have
to look for her where--

"you know,
everybody show up here.

We'll look on our own."

Any details at all help,
even just

the littlest detail
can help a lot, you know?

I completely expected
to call the Greywinds

and say, "Where is Savanna?"

And they would say,
"Oh, she came back."

So I called,
and she said, "No."

And I said,
"What do you think happened?"

And I'll never forget it.

She said,
"I think that crazy lady

"in apartment five
lured Savanna up there

to kill her
and take her baby."

And I said, "Norberta,
she let us in her apartment.

She was totally calm
and collected both times."

I said, "You can't let
your mind go to the worst."

♪ ♪

The bathroom was so small,

easy for Brooke
to line with plastic.

As I came to,
I knew she'd planned ahead.

I felt numb,

but a slice to the belly...

You feel that.

♪ ♪

The third police search
is done

in this case
on Sunday the 20th,

and that's about 6:00 p.m.,

and that's done
with Detective Phil Swan,

and then also
Sergeant VanLith in the case.

The first two times
they searched,

it was more
of a visual search.

This time, they wanted

and needed Brooke's permission
to go further.

Phil Swan went in,
he opened kitchen doors,

he opened containers,
he looked in closets,

he looked under the bed.

He looked in virtually
every place

you could possibly look.

Brooke lied so easily.

My dad never saw me.

When the cops
finished talking to her,

they went down
to see my mom and dad again.

And I believe
all of us were just praying

that she had gone
to her friends.

It just was so unlikely.

But where could she be?

♪ ♪

I arrived at work
in the Detective Bureau

at Fargo police
on Monday morning.

The north side
of Fargo specifically

is like its own little
small town within the town.

Savanna Greywind's apartment

caught my attention immediately.

This is half a block
from the house I lived in.

It's one block
from the house I grew up in.

I found a fellow
Fargo police detective,

Nick Kjonaas,
and I felt like we

should go do a little digging.

After we pulled the dumpsters

and searched the area,

I personally went upstairs

and knocked
on apartment number five,

Brooke Crews'
and William Haines' apartment

and did not receive
any answer.

It sounded quiet,
didn't sound

like anybody was home.

They didn't find any clues--

not one.

You hear about how cops
have a better chance

of solving a case
in the first 48 hours.

For me, the 48 hour mark
came and went.

Brooke and William,
they came and went too,

like nothing had happened.

We want
to officially hold searches.

Understandably, the public
wasn't going to wait.

There was
rogue search parties,

not just in Fargo-Moorhead,

but all over the region.

All I've been doing
is watching the door,

waiting for her to walk in.

We need her home.

Posters and persistence
is their plan of action

moving forward.

Fargo Police Department
had become aware

that William Hoehn
had a warrant for his arrest

for an unrelated case.

We decided to try
to arrest William

on that warrant to get him
in the interview room,

to try to befriend William

and get a story out of him.

Brooke and William
had just returned from a trip

to Walmart, and they arrested
William for his warrant,

and Brooke went back up
into the apartment.

She had a bag.

And we were telling those cops,
there's a bag.

We think a baby's in there.

I told them, "Stop her."

♪ ♪

And they were more worried
about William,

weren't concerned
about her at all.

They wanted
everything done,

everything searched,

and understandably,
if she had consented,

that would be one thing.

The police would not be able
to open that bag

without a search warrant.

♪ ♪

Middle of the night,

I went to
the Fargo Police Department

and conducted an interview
with William Hoehn.

William Hoehn told us that
when he arrived home from work

on Saturday afternoon,
he walked into his apartment

and saw Brooke Crews
and Savanna Greywind

sitting on the couch
in their living room.

We were trying
to establish a timeline

from William's perspective.

Brooke Crews
had told officers previously

that Joe Greywind had come up
and knocked on the door

and that Savanna had left
shortly after that.

I hate it when people lie,

but I love it
when they get caught.

William Hoehn
was lying left and right,

and he was far from
forthcoming about something

that happened the same night

he was brought in
to the station.

A patrol officer
interrupted the interview

to let myself
and Detective Kjonaas know

that a police call
had come in from Walmart.

The police call from Walmart
was for a hit and run crash

in the parking lot,

and the caller had gotten
the license plate

of the hit and run vehicle.

That hit and run vehicle
was the same red Chevy pickup

that William Hoehn
had just been arrested in

a couple of hours earlier
in North Fargo.

I went back
into the interview room

with that information.

I remember
being very friendly,

almost joking around
with William, saying,

"Did you just get into
a car accident at Walmart?"

♪ ♪

What I walked away with was
we have another lead.

We can go and see
why were they at Walmart

in the middle of the night.

When we arrived at Walmart,

we asked
to review the security video

from the parking lot.

We could clearly see
the red pickup arrive

and William Hoehn
get out of the driver's seat

and go inside Walmart.

We had concluded
that Brooke was with

and stayed in the truck.

I asked if we could see
a copy of a receipt

to see what William
had purchased.

They were able
to pull up a receipt.

That receipt contained
some food,

some clothing items,
a pair of shoes,

and on the receipt
it said, "Luvs," L-U-V-S.

I looked at Detective Kjonaas
and said,

"This guy bought
a pack of diapers,

a pack of size zero
newborn diapers."

♪ ♪

The discoveries
that occurred on Wednesday

changed the investigation.

It went from basically
a gut feeling

that these two
had something to do with

it to actual proof that they
had something to do with this.

After I had left Walmart,

Detective Kjonaas went and met
with William Hoehn's boss.

Brooke and William
called her Phoenix,

but that wasn't her name.

It was Haisley.

Her middle name was gonna be
after my dad, Haisley Jo.

I thought, oh, my gosh,
where was this baby?

Is this baby alive?
Is it safe?

If it was in the apartment,
how did I not hear this?

I thought I was gonna throw up.

It was decided
that logistically

we could get everything
in place

and execute this on Thursday.

♪ ♪

And I seen all the cops

coming into the building.

We're just like,
"Well, what's going on?"

I went down the stairs

and met
with the Greywind family.

They said that
they had a search warrant

for apartment five

and asked us
to leave our apartment

and go across the street.

I was out in the front yard
with the Greywind family,

just standing with them,
trying to keep them calm.

The other detectives
were handcuffing Brooke Crews.

She was arguing
with the detectives

for breaking her door.

♪ ♪

Police searched quickly,

tearing the place apart,

looking in every room,
every cabinet,

everywhere, for any clue
as to what happened to me.

They finally found one.

♪ ♪

The guy below
Brooke and William

yelled out the window,
"Oh, my God,

they found a baby."

♪ ♪

I remember the feeling I had.

♪ ♪

I remember screaming
at the cops, "I told you.

I told you."

And my neighbors had came out,

and they said they took
the baby by ambulance.

And I said, "Where's Savanna?"

And they said,
"They didn't find Savanna."

♪ ♪

When Norberta told me

that she thought that Brooke
had lured Savannah

upstairs to kill her
and take her baby,

and I--I said
that's a huge leap to make.

Yeah, she was right.

Local reporters descended

on my apartment building

as searches for me continued.

Police have found a baby

in one of the apartments
in the building.

A man and a woman
have been taken into custody.

I was thoroughly impressed
with specifically

Joe Greywinds' ability

to remain calm
in that situation.

I don't know how well

I could have kept
my composure.

I remember him telling me

that I was taking it
pretty well.

What would he do?
That's what I asked him.

"What would you
be doing right now?"

He'd probably go up there
and kill all those guys

and then get away with it,
not have to go to jail.

If I went up and did that,

I'd probably
at least get 10 years.

♪ ♪

We have two people detained
right now for questioning,

and the investigation
is proceeding.

We ask people
to be patient with us

because this is at
a critical juncture

of the investigation.

My baby--my baby--
Haisley

was taken to the hospital.

My neighbors were taken
to interrogation rooms.

My parents were right.

That day Brooke walked by,
Haisley was in her bag.

But where was I?

Brooke started her interview
with one lie

that became many,
first telling cops

I'd asked her advice
on inducing labor.

Brooke insisted
I left her apartment alive.

She said I came back later

to give her my baby,
a baby she said I didn't want.

Yeah, right.

Of course, that's not
what really happened

behind the door
of apartment five.

It would take 3 and 1/2 months

for Brooke to finally
come clean with the truth.

Sleepless nights in jail

have a way
of motivating people.

Brooke said that
while she initially believed

she herself was pregnant,
it was William

who told her she wasn't,

and the plan
to take my baby was born.

Brooke went downstairs
to apartment two

and asked Savanna
to come up and assist

with the sewing project
for the sole purpose

of getting her baby.

Brooke says
that William came in.

She had removed
the baby at that point.

Savanna was not
doing well at all.

William walked in
and said, "Is she dead?"

Brooke said,
"I don't think so."

♪ ♪

William then went
into the bedroom,

took off his clothing,
came back in with a rope.

They put my baby
in a mixing bowl

they had ready
on the toilet...

♪ ♪

While they showered
off my blood.

♪ ♪

They continued on
to clean up the scene

and placed Savanna's body
in garbage bags.

♪ ♪

Later,
William Hoehn kept following

the news coverage about me

until Brooke
couldn't take it anymore.

♪ ♪

So where was I
all those times the cops

were in the apartment?

The first two times
the cops searched,

I was in a trash bag
in the bathroom closet.

♪ ♪

And my baby,
every time the police

searched the apartment,
Haisley was tucked

between pillows on the bed.

She was in the same place
she was

on the day
she was finally found,

just buried in bedding.

Brooke and William,
in the interviews,

talked about
how they were shocked

that the baby didn't make
any noise

during those searches.

Every single time the officers
or detectives or sergeants

had walked through
that apartment,

they were sure
they were busted.

When people ask me,
"How did you not hear

a newborn baby?"
And what I tell them is,

"There was nothing to hear.

"The baby did not cry.

"It didn't burp.
It didn't cough.

It didn't do anything when
I was in there that I heard."

Even with
the battering ram

breaking that door
and all of the police yelling,

"search warrant,"
the baby never made a sound.

The boldness
of the plan was shocking.

Investigators found
anatomy books

in Brooke's apartment,
but nothing that would

teach her how to do
what she did.

The baby, interestingly,

was born healthy,
which is shocking

considering that Brooke Crews
had no medical training,

that she conducted
this cesarean section

with no knowledge,
with crude instruments.

Brooke had printed off
forms to fill out

with the North Dakota
Department of Health

in how to obtain
a birth certificate,

how to, you know,
register your newborn baby,

how to obtain
social security numbers.

♪ ♪

She had Google searches

of how long
a baby could survive

if the mother
stopped breathing.

She had stocked up
on supplies.

♪ ♪

She did not decide
to do this the day before.

♪ ♪

Police found
a piece of notebook paper,

a detailed log
of fake pregnancy milestones.

She wrote down
her last alleged period,

an estimated due date,

August 6, 2017.

♪ ♪

At the time she killed me,

her calculations
would have made her

a couple of weeks overdue.

♪ ♪

William had said,

"You said that we
were gonna have a baby.

You better produce a baby."

They were just right there,
a few steps away

from where the victim had lived
and Savanna's family

had all lived,
and they were gonna try

to get away with raising
Savanna's child on their own.

♪ ♪

As for how
Brooke and William

got rid of me,
after the cops came twice,

they knew they had
to get my body

out of the bathroom closet
and out of the apartment.

Sunday morning,
they turned a dresser

into a temporary coffin,
hollowed it out,

and hammered me in quietly.

♪ ♪

During the third search,
at 6:00 p.m. that same night,

detectives again
found nothing.

Who could believe that I was
inches away from them

the whole time?

I think everybody feels, like,

how is it possible
that the police

were in that apartment
three times

and saw nothing?

I think the police
ask themselves that.

Savanna was allegedly
in this dresser

that was
just sitting out there

in which the police
were maybe even

standing next to
at one point in time.

But there was nothing
about that

that was seemingly suspicious.

Now, keep in mind,
at this point in time,

the police are looking
for a 22-year-old woman

who's pregnant.

She's not
gonna be in a drawer.

In the middle of the night,

after that third search,

Brooke and William
moved my body.

According to Brooke,
they struggled to move

the dresser down the stairs.

No one was watching

as they took my body away

close to dawn
on Monday morning

and tried to hide

where the dresser
had been with a hamper.

But looking closely,
you could see the marks.

Brooke and William
thought they'd gotten rid

of me once and for all.

Local news stations
continued covering

the search to bring me home.

It has been almost
a week since Savanna Greywind

was last seen alive,
but it seems nobody

has an answer to the question
we're all asking.

Where is she?

We showed William
pictures of Savanna.

We put maps in front
of William and said,

"You don't have to say a word.

"Just show me on a map
where she is

so we can bring her home."

William just said, "You know,
I really want to help you guys,

but I can't be disloyal
to Brooke."

I still can't believe
how hundreds of people

dropped everything
to search for me.

Everybody--everybody
that had a big heart

was there
looking for my daughter.

She had all the hopes
and dreams of many young women,

pregnant or not.

She was looking forward to
being able to shower her baby

with love and attention.

I know it must have
been hell for my family,

seeing hundreds of people
searching day after day,

and wondering if anyone
would ever find me.

Lots of parents of missing
and murdered Indigenous women

wait months, years,
some wait forever.

I'm glad my parents didn't
have to wait that long.

The Red River
is such a unique place.

It was a beautiful,
sunny Sunday afternoon.

It was an ideal day
to just get out on my kayak.

I didn't have anything
going on in the afternoon.

I just wanted
to have some water time

and relax out on the water.

Everybody knew
what was happening.

Everybody was reeling
from the idea

that Savanna was missing

and that something
had happened to her.

So we just wanted to keep
an eye out and be alert.

Really what we saw
was something wrapped

in plastic and duct tape.

You could just see
the shape of a body.

I grabbed my cell phone
and called 911.

I was at home when I got
the call from my lieutenant

that a body
was found in the river.

And the first words
that I said to him

were, "I don't care
where it is, I'm going."

I met the lieutenant
on the 90th Avenue Bridge.

This is just a mile
or two north of Fargo

on the Red River.

We were trying
to get a boat in place

to be able to go out
and do a recovery.

When I was younger,

I hung a dreamcatcher
over my bed.

It catches your bad dreams

and lets
the good ones through.

Later,
against my parent's wishes,

I got a dreamcatcher
tattooed on my leg.

They carried her up
the bank of the river.

We cut into the bags.

When we spread
that cut in the bags open,

that dreamcatcher tattoo
was right in the exact spot,

and I knew we had Savanna.

What happened
to Savanna was wrong.

That shouldn't happen.

A family shouldn't have
to go through that.

Ultimately,
Brooke pleaded guilty

to lying to police,

conspiracy to
commit kidnapping,

and conspiracy
to commit murder.

She got life without parole.

William pleaded guilty
to the kidnapping charge

and lying to police
and got a life sentence

for that, but was acquitted
of the murder charge.

He's doing 20 years now.

How did he beat
the murder rap?

Prosecutors couldn't prove
beyond reasonable doubt

that he was actually
the one who killed me.

Brooke had a history
of lying about the details

of the crime,
so who was to say

she wasn't lying about this?

I do believe that he was
still complicit in the murder.

But again,
it was very difficult to prove

because people don't write
contracts out for this stuff.

This was a couple
who was having a discussion,

that wanted a child,

and you have one person
who has admitted

to cutting a woman open,

and that's basically
the evidence

that we had to support that.

She could be hard to believe.

We think the murder
happened somewhere

between, you know,
2:30 and 3:30.

Officer Bollman
was up there at about 5:17.

Could the place
have been that cleaned up?

Whatever the could have,

would have,
should have been was, it was.

I find it hard to believe

that the room wasn't prepped
for the murder

because they didn't locate
any blood

or hair
or biological material.

I think I did
what I could do in the moment,

and I get that
that wasn't enough for them

because nothing would be enough
besides Savanna

coming downstairs
and being healthy and happy,

but if that's what they need
to move on

is to be upset
with Sergeant Sam Bollman

or Officer Sam Bollman,
then so be it.

How do you ever have justice
in a case like this?

There is no justice.

All there is is accountability.

I hope that Savanna's death
is not totally in vain.

Savanna's Act now exists,
so that's good.

I think they would give
all of that up

to have Savanna back.

Savanna's Act ultimately
allows for transparency

throughout state, federal,
and tribal jurisdictions

to have a better understanding
of how many women

are being impacted by this.

There are so many missing
and murdered Indigenous women

out there that are not found.

Women have gone missing
10, 12 years.

I could not imagine

living every day not knowing

where your child is at.

I'm still murdered,

but I'm no longer missing.

My baby survived
a violent C-section

and premature birth.

Of course,
she's not a baby anymore.

Haisley Jo Greywind,
she's the best thing

in my life right now.

She makes everything
a lot better.

She makes me feel young.

Big hugs.

I knew when I seen Haisley,

right away,
she was Savanna's baby,

and, oh, she looked
so much like Savanna.

We had a ceremony,

and they gave her
an Indian name...

Which means "survivor."

My boyfriend
had Haisley for a few years,

but now my parents
are taking care of her.

I tell her stories
about her mom,

tell her
that Mommy's in heaven.

Haisley always
looks up in the sky

and asks which star
is her mom,

and I tell her,
"The brightest one."

Right?
Yeah.

Nothing can bring me back,

but in a way, I'm still here.
