This is the military command
of the Soviet Union...

...was responsible for all war fronts,
including that of Leningrad.

During the attack of 8 September 1941...

...the Germans managed to reach
Lake Ladoga from the south.

Then the Germans got as far as Leningrad
and besieged the city.

What does the word blockade mean?

A siege.

How long did the blockade last?
- Nine hundred days.

This is Leningrad surrounded
and blocked off by German troops.

The enemy had cut off all the roads
for food supplies.

From the start of the blockade
the city was mercilessly bombed.

After the first bombings
the city was completely surrounded.

Nobody could get in or out.

Hitler wanted to starve the citizens to death.

The situation got worse by the day.

Public transport ceased to function.

There was no electricity anymore.

The water mains froze up.

Food supplies dwindled.

When the winter started...

...thousands of people died
of hunger and cold every day.

Corpses were piled up
in the streets and the houses.

After nearly three years
the Leningrad blockade was lifted.

The survivors of the blockade
were seen as heroes.

But they were forbidden ever again...

...to talk about the horrors of the siege.

Fortunately he didn't live to see the war.

He was already dead.

They would clean it at home...

something to eat.

They were shot by our own police.

The authorities never mentioned it
and the papers didn't report it.

Nothing like: "Did you know that
the Badaev warehouses were bombed..."

"..and all the food destroyed?"
Nobody said it out loud.

There were rumours.

But the radio didn't say anything.

There were no news broadcasts
in which it was mentioned.

The news was always about our victories.

We didn't even know
that the city was surrounded.

Or how many prisoners of war
the Germans had taken.

No, we only heard what battles we had won.

Victory is not just a visitor to our land.

Victory is always lord and master here.

It wasn't totally unexpected, of course.

But we thought it wouldn't be hard to win.
We thought that it would be dead easy...

...that we could handle them.

But the German tanks approached
at such speed...

...that one of them even...

It was unexpected.
Really unexpected.

Not only for the population,
but for the whole government.

I am not an eyewitness of course...

...but we now know...

...that the army wasn't prepared for this.

The famous military scout called Sorge...

...told Stalin that the German army
was at the border.

But Stalin didn't believe him.

Our army was not at the border.

Only at the fort of Brest.

And with far too few men.

including Stalin.

For us it was unexpected, yes.
They were here so fast.

We were just surrounded.

We were stuck in Leningrad

The citizens had to defend the city.
There was no real army.

They were old people and children.

Without any weapons they defended the city,

We hadn't noticed.

We called her: Lyalenka!

At first she reacted, but then it stopped.

And Lyalenka was no more. Then mummy
said: I've got nothing left to live for.

They were always so close.

And I was always clamouring for attention.

I was so badly behaved then.

I used to dream that
among the toys...

...would find a biscuit or something.

I couldn't be stopped.

And I'm still the same.

Because I'm soft in the head,

I forget what ...
- What happened to your mother?

When she said she had nothing left

But I got her bread tokens for that month.

on 25 December 1941,

As aresult of the food shortage...

...the number of deaths has increased.

The death rate is as follows:

In October: 6,199 people.

In November: 9,183 people.

In the first 25 days of December:
39,073 people.

Between 1 and 10 December
9,541 people.

Between 11 and 20 December
18,447 people died.

Between 21 and 25 December
11,085 people died...

In December it first happened that people
dropped down dead of starvation.

They'd be walking along the street,
fall over, and freeze.

Temperatures went down to minus 30.

The dead bodies were collected by lorries.

People died at home as well.

But that wasn't visible.

Epidemics were a great worry
because of it

All women came naked into the bathroom.

I suddenly realised I looked like them.

They weren't people.

They were live skeletons wrapped in skin.

We dragged a little bucket along the floor...

. filled it with water to wash ourselves...

...and dragged it back again.

All those women did that.

One after the other.

That's how it went.

The sound I most remember?

There's one sound I've never forgotten.

Aman comes stumbling towards me.

and can hardly keep my eyes open.

When I went out of the house
I saw the corpses.

They weren't buried
because the ground was frozen.

They were just dumped at the cemetery.

And those bodies...
you couldn't even see if it was a person.

The body would be wrapped up, like this.

If the body was lying like this,
you would see bloody stains here.

People cut away the cloth
and carved off the flesh.

And if the body was lying the other way up...

...the cloth and the flesh
would be cut away here.

I could easily see the red stains.

There was no blood, because it was freezing.

You only saw that something
had been cut off, like skin.

You didn't see cloth but flesh.

They said that people who cut off the flesh...

...sold it on the black market as meatballs.

But perhaps the people she saw
had died on the operating table.

December 1941: 26 persons.

January 1942: 366 persons.

The first 15 days of February 1942:

494 persons.

The social background
of those convicted is as follows:

1. As to Party membership.

Members and prospective members
of the Communist Party:

11 people, 1.24 per cent.

Members of the Youth Organisation:

4 people, 0.4 per cent.

Non-party members: 871 people.

98.51 per cent.

2. As to profession.

Workers: 363 people.

Civil servants: 40 people.

Peasants: 6 people.

When [ could go outside again...

...and told people that my mother
and my sister had died...

...they asked:

So how come you are still alive?

Because it was obvious
I'd been nibbling at their rations.

At that time 'nibbling' was a word often used.

And then I came across the cat Stripey.

I used to feed her before the war.

My mother would also throw her some food.

And now the cat was hoping, of course,
that I'd give her something.

But my first thought was to eat Stripey.

And of course we did.

I held her head
and our neighbour hacked it off.

We had one of those chopping blocks
in the kitchen.

We chopped the cat to bits on that.

She cooked the cat, but I ate all of her.

She said: I can't.

Officially there are always fewer victims
than in reality.

First people said that half a million
Leningrad civilians were buried there.

Then it was 700,000, and then 900,000.

And now that there's no longer
any fear of persecution...

...they speak of a million people.

The truth was kept well hidden.

And the question is
if we know the truth now.

That's right.

We still don't know what really happened.
There are so many lies about.

Every new leader comes up
with the story that suits him.

In fifty years' time,
our children will kKnow...

...a completely different story
about the war.

This legendary story
of courage and heroism...
