Before Mariko left Yedo,
she gave this to Lord Toranaga.

after Osaka you were to have it.

''Lord Toranaga will give thee
all the craftsmen necessary.

''He needs you and your ships.

''And from my personal estate, l have
willed to thee all the money necessary.

''Build another ship
and build another life, my love.

''Take next year's Black Ship,
and live for ever.

''Listen, my dear one,

''my Christian soul prays to see thee
again in a Christian heaven.

''My Japanese hara prays that,
in the next life,

''l will be whatever is necessary

''and to be with thee
wherever thou art.

gloriously and live for ever.

That year, at dawn
on the 2 1 st day of the 1 0th month,

''the Month without Gods'',
the main armies clashed.

lt was in the mountains near Sekigahara
astride the North Road.

Forty thousand heads were taken.

Three days later,
lshido was captured alive.

Toranaga sent him in chains
to Osaka for public viewing,

with only his head showing.

Passers-by were invited to saw

with a bamboo saw.
