Malachi Miller was born on a hot Monday evening of August 23, 2010 at his home in Gorham,

in Kansas, the United States. It seems that he was in a hurry to enter this world as he arrived

just minutes after the midwife rolled in. It was almost as though he knew he had much to

accomplish in this earthly life and was ready to make the most of every minute right away.

Shortly after Malachi's parents, Dru and Jenna decided on his name, their priest made mention

that Malachi Patrick was quite a prophetic name. Malachi would go on to be a very profound and

thought-provoking child. Malachi, from a young age, showed his unique personality,

sense of humor and quick wit. The little one loved putting a smile on anyone's face.

He was born into a Catholic family of six children, with Malachi being the fourth.

These six bundles of joy were affectionately called the Miller Six Pack.

It seems that heaven has always kept a close eye on the little saint that would over the years

capture the hearts of many. His parents were convinced that when he was a baby, the little

one saw angels each time he and his parents would visit the chapel. Malachi would have

his head raised and would look back and forth for long periods of time as though he were

seeing angels fly and this only happened in the chapel.

The young man wanted to be everyone's friend and never knew a stranger. He had a gift for

striking up a conversation with people of all ages. When he was only two years old, his

dad had taken the kids to McDonald's for an ice cream treat. Malachi noticed an old woman

sitting by herself, so instead of eating with his dad and siblings, he pulled up a chair

next to this complete stranger and ate his ice cream with her so she wouldn't have to

be alone. Malachi even authored his own litanies when he was just three years old. Malachi

Malachi had two older brothers, Connor and Christian.

So when the family was praying the litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary and got to "Mary,

help of Christians" Malachi could be heard shouting out "Help of Connors!"

He apparently didn't want Connor left out.

Later in the litany when the family was praying "Queen of Apostles" and "Queen of Martyrs"

Malachi could be heard shouting out once again "Queen of I don't like the devil!"

It was a very big part of Malachi's life.

He began learning how to play the violin at age 4, started playing the piano at age 6,

and was singing from the moment he was born.

He had always been the entertainer too.

When he was 5 years old, the family was at a 4-H event.

There was some downtime, and they asked audience members if anyone had a funny joke to tell.

Malachi was the first to get up on stage to tell a joke to the large audience.

When I'm worried and I can't sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep.

When I fall asleep counting my blessings.

When I be frolic, it takes more, I think of when I had none at all.

And I fall asleep counting my blessings.

But tragedy soon struck the family when Malachi lost his dad to an illness in June of 2017.

This loss left the family heartbroken, with a 6-year-old Malachi still trying to come

to terms with what had happened.

He thought his dad would be okay.

Even though the family had always prayed for a miracle, they were also praying that Drew

had a holy and happy death.

As the days, months, and weeks went by, Malachi continued to speak openly and often about getting

to be with his father again, and getting to see that day when he'll get to play with

his father again.

One thing that always bothered Malachi was the fact that he was the first Miller kid

who his daddy didn't get to coach for baseball.

He had once told his siblings that he kind of hoped he died as a kid so he would have

time to play with daddy in heaven, and even told his mom Jenna that it would be okay if

he went early so he could have time alone in heaven with daddy.

Malachi remained busy with his schooling, musical activities, 4-H events, and most importantly

his faith.

The family prayed their rosary every day.

He studied hard to make his first confession and first holy communion, and made sure he

always began his day with morning prayers and ended the day with night prayers.

Malachi had such a giving spirit. He even volunteered his time as a camera operator for the local

PBS television station. He began doing this at the ripe old age of 8.

When Malachi was 11 years old and beginning his usual summer activities, tragedy struck

the family again. It was the beginning of June 2002, and Malachi was diagnosed with a spinal

cord tumor. It was a very rare tumor that normally is only found in adult brains. They tried to operate,

but they were only able to get about 10%. After surgery, when the doctors removed the breathing

tube, Malachi wasn't breathing on his own, so they had to re-intubate him. Malachi later was asking his

mom about that moment. He said, "You mean, if they wouldn't have put the tube back in,

I wouldn't have been asleep and then woke up in heaven?"

When his mom said yes, Malachi replied, "Well, shoot, I should have just died."

After surgery, he was unable to walk. He was in the middle of his baseball season,

but the surgeon said he would not be able to play anymore.

This is where the little one asked his grandmother to pray for him, and amazingly,

Two and a half weeks after surgery, Malachi was back out on the baseball field and was even more

determined than ever. Baseball was his favorite sport and there was no way the little one was

going to sit back and miss out on the fun. Malachi received the sacrament of confirmation in August

2022, taking the name of Aloysius. The young man wore his brown scapular faithfully. It didn't

matter if he was swimming or even showering, he always had it on.

Our lady of Fatima asked the whole world to practice the first Saturday devotion, and

this was a devotion that Malachi and his family completed along with the first Friday devotion.

He also went to confession every single Sunday before Mass.

He was an altar server and was working on learning the Latin responses, which was an

important goal to him.

Malachi, together with his family, also prayed the Holy Rosary daily, and at the end of their prayer time, Malachi's mom,

Jenna, would always have her children call upon the intercession of saints or loved ones that have passed on.

Every single day, this was Malachi's exact words and order.

Saint Dryan, Saint Brawen, Saint Gerard, Saint Anthony, Saint Augustine, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Philip,

Daddy, Granddad, Great-Grandpa and Great-Grandma. Saint Aloysius. Pray for us.

One day, while he was in Kansas City undergoing his weekly treatment, his favorite football player, Harrison Butger,

just so happened to be headed into the chamber after Malachi.

One of the first things Malachi told Harrison was that the reason he was his favorite player

was because he was a traditional Catholic and so was Harrison.

Malachi's favorite player had nothing to do with football and everything to do with faith.

In the middle of November, Malachi took a serious turn for the worse.

He woke up one morning and couldn't feel the back of his neck or his right leg.

He became paralyzed from the neck down from that moment on. He also started to

have trouble breathing. The tumor had now moved to the brainstem. He was airlifted

with his mom by his side to Omaha Children's Hospital. They were not sure

if he would survive the flight and even two days later Malachi's oxygen had

plummeted and the doctors didn't know if he would survive the night. But

But miraculously, the little one rallied.

On December 6th, St. Nicholas Feast Day, Malachi had a most surprising visit from St. Nicholas

himself who threw candy into the hospital room.

Malachi laid there in bed with a smile on his face for the longest time.

He was in such disbelief, the nurses and patients were wondering what all the commotion was.

Malachi was unable to talk because he had a trachea tube that was inserted into his mouth,

but he would still be able to mouth words to his loved ones.

He still had an amazing attitude, even still making jokes or even trying to play tricks

on the nurses.

Eventually, he was able to regain his voice.

Malachi had to spend Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years in the hospital, yet he made

the most of it and was still thinking of others.

A few days before Christmas, a package arrived to Malachi's room.

Malachi's mother thought that it was for Malachi, but the nurse handed the package to

her and it was actually from Malachi.

Malachi knew his mother loved Cappuccino and he found someone to help him order a monogrammed

mug along with Cappuccino mix, all while not able to do a single thing for himself.

Malachi's mom remained with him for the entire 49 days he was hospitalized, never leaving

the hospital once.

Even though Malachi was six hours away from home, he received daily visitors.

The list of his visitors at the front check-in desk at the hospital was pages and pages long.

Family members, priests, nuns, and people from the church that he had never even met would

come to visit, pray for, sing Christmas carols, or just to be present with the living saint.

Bishop Pivarunas didn't miss one day while Malachi was hospitalized.

Bishop came every single day to be with him.

Malachi was able to receive many blessings, including the apostolic blessing and extreme

unction.

I have to share with you an interesting encounter.

I meet some very, very, what I would consider,

devout Catholics as I travel.

Everywhere I travel, it's wonderful to see

God's grace working in souls.

There was a young family in Western Kansas.

Five years ago, the father died.

He died a very devout death.

left his wife and six children behind.

It's five years ago.

This past summer, the 12-year-old boy, his name is Malachi,

came down with an illness that has basically paralyzed

his arms and his legs.

He can't move.

He's paralyzed from his neck down.

Not only that, but he's also having difficulty breathing.

So he's like on an action machine to help him to breathe.

He has a trache at the bottom of his neck.

I am absolutely amazed at this young man's patience.

He's so resigned.

He's so patient.

Does he have his moments where he gets scared?

Yes.

But he cannot do anything for himself.

Can't even scratch his nose.

He was sent to from Kansas.

He sent him to the children's hospital,

providentially in Omaha, only 10 minutes away.

We were able to visit the religious priest

and laity visit him often.

And I have to tell you this, after six weeks,

his mother learned how to use the clean the trach out

and do all those things, keeping the oxygen

machine going to send him home, flew him home.

And whenever I get a chance, I go to visit him,

encourage him to suffer patiently to draw down graces for souls. But he indicated to

his mom when he can't talk because of the trick he clicks to go, and she say, "What

an evening." He'll mouth the trick down. So she'll take something out of the trick

and he can talk. "What were his first words to me? Bishop, what do you think I should

give up for Lent. I said, "Malachi, I think you got a lot to offer up already. I mean,

you can't even scratch your nose without somebody helping you." And by the way, I'll tell you

about that. When he was in the hospital, his mom was out in the hallway maybe talking to

a doctor or whatever, he'd indicate, "Scratch my nose." And I'd take a washcloth and scratch

his nose and when he got the trach done he told his aunt, "Nobody scratches my nose as

good as the bishop." So I'm good for something I tell you. But don't ask me to scratch your

nose, okay? But I have to admire this boy. He's 12 years old. He struggles sometimes.

He has his difficulties, etc., etc.

He's cheerful.

He has a sense of humor.

I was going into the hospital room one time and I said, I was looking at my text messages

and I said, "Malachi, I'm getting text messages from everyone around the country.

Everyone's praying for you."

And he mouthed the words, "Is Biden praying for me?"

I said, I think Biden needs to pray for himself.

(audience laughing)

But I have to say this, it's to me a great edification

to see this young man, 12 years old,

and has all these crosses and sufferings

and how patient he is.

I'm in admiration of God's grace.

- Malachi became the favorite patient throughout the hospital.

The staff fell in love with him.

Doctors, nurses, security officers, janitors, receptionists, and cafeteria employees.

It seemed as though everyone in the hospital knew of and was inspired by Malachi.

They were willing to do anything for this brave soul who was filled with so much faith.

A team of nurses even took him on a run while he was in his hospital bed.

While at the hospital, his mom Jenna was told that Malachi qualified for Make-A-Wish.

When asked what he would wish for, Malachi said, "a puppy," and it was only a puppy

that he wanted, a female shitsu.

Two weeks prior to Malachi's wish, a lady out of Missouri had contacted Kansas Missouri

Make-A-Wish and said she had a puppy for a wish kid that she wanted to donate.

Believe it or not, it was none other than a female shitsu, and Malachi named her Agnes.

After 49 days in the hospital, Malachi was miraculously back home.

The day after Malachi returned home, his make-a-wish came true.

From the moment Malachi's new furry friend Agnes came into the Miller home, she immediately

knew what her job was.

She licked and licked Malachi's face and brought joy, happiness, and smiles to Malachi and

his entire family.

This was only a puppy, but she had no desire to leave Malachi's side from the very start.

Even though Malachi was paralyzed on a trach and a ventilator, the boy radiated joy.

He would sing, he would be silly, he would pray, he didn't complain.

Malachi knew his condition was serious, but he always had hope that everything would

be okay.

Sometimes Malachi would even joke about death.

He once told his Aunt Mary Jo, "I just want to know how many people will be crying at

my funeral."

He lived through so many sufferings, but was cheerful and could often be heard praying

out loud from the confines of his hospital bed.

He accepted his cross willingly, all for the love of Almighty God.

On May 1, 2023, the Feast of Saint Joseph, Malachi entered his eternal reward after having

so bravely and courageously carried the cross.

Among those who came to say their last goodbyes was his little pup, Agnes.

She curled up right by Malachi's head as he lay peaceful in his casket.

It was as if she knew this would be the last time she would be spending with her friend

here on earth, and she fell fast asleep.

Faithful friend in life and death.

A couple weeks prior to his passing, he told his mom, "Sometimes you have to tell the people

you love goodbye."

She asked him if he was ready to say goodbye, and he said, "No, but I am ready to go to

heaven."

And the little one, not only did he get to be with the saints and our Lord in paradise,

but his wish of wanting to be with his dad was surely granted.

He went from being the first Miller kid who his daddy didn't coach to being the first

Miller kid to get coached by his daddy in heaven.

Even though the family didn't get the big miracle they had hoped and prayed for in

the end, there were so many miracles and huge blessings along the way.

Malachi's family has a motto they like to live by, and that is, "Don't count the days.

Make the days count."

That's exactly how Malachi lived each and every day.

It was almost as if he knew his life on earth was limited

and he had much to accomplish in 12 short years.

He lived his life to the absolute fullest.

Dear Malachi, look down upon us

and teach us to love Jesus above everything.

But most importantly, help us to follow your example

and remain joyful as we carry our cross through this life.

Malachi Miller, pray for us.
