In this lesson, what I'd like
to do is take you on a tour

through some of the software
that can be downloaded

from Oracle's download site.

So let's go to
www.oracle.com and click

the Downloads section.

Now, what you see here is
absolutely crucial to anyone

who is learning how to
use an Oracle Database,

because the software
you see on this page

is complete software,
just like businesses use,

that's available to you
for download for free

for your own personal use.

So what that means
is that if you

want to learn the
Oracle Database,

you don't need to
download a demo of Oracle.

You can actually download
for free, no cost,

the Enterprise software itself.

And that makes all of
that available to you

for learning as long as
it's your personal use.

Can't use it for a
business or to make money,

but you can definitely use
it for your own personal use.

So let's take a little
bit of a quick look

through here, because there's
a lot of software here.

Let's look at the
Database section.

Here's where we'll download
the actual software

binaries, the
installation package

that we'll need in order to
install the Oracle Database.

Below that, you.

See Java Java is
available for you.

The Enterprise Edition, any
of the runtime environments

that you might need-- all
of that's available here.

Middleware such as the Fusion
Middleware, Oracle WebLogic--

those products are here.

Server and Storage Systems is
another one of interest to us--

click See All here--

because this is going to have
software packages like Oracle

Linux and the Oracle
Enterprise Kernel,

Oracle Solaris operating
system, and then

things like VM VirtualBox
that we'll discuss.

So let's go through
the process of how

to download the software
for the Oracle Database.

I'm going to click on Database
12c Enterprise/Standard

editions.

And what we see here are the
available database software

downloads.

The first section that we see
here is Oracle Database 12c.

So this is the latest version of
Oracle that's available to us,

and it's what we cover.

We see the different platforms
that 12 is available for--

Windows 64-bit, Linux,
Solaris, HP, and even a system

like zLinux on a mainframe.

All of that can be downloaded
right here from this site.

I do want to point out that
for version 12c so far,

the only platform supported--
at least in the download--

are 64-bit platforms.

So if you don't have a 64-bit
architecture of Windows

to work with or a 64-bit
Linux, for instance,

you don't want to download
Oracle Database 12c.

If you need an older
32-bit edition,

you can come down
here to 11g Release 2.

It's available for Windows
in 32-bit or 64-bit, Linux.

So what we want to do here
is go through the process

of downloading the Oracle
software for Microsoft

Windows in 64-bit.

I'm going to click See All.

Here we see all the
software related to 12c.

This first section is really
what we're interested in,

because it's the actual
two zip files that

comprise the package that we'll
need to run the installer.

There's some other related
software below here.

First I accept the
license agreement,

and then I click the first file.

Now, notice that
this is downloading.

If you were to do
this yourself, it's

likely that you would be
prompted with a login screen.

So that login screen
is going to ask you

for a username and
password that allows

you to log into the download
network, if you will.

I already have mine
in cookies, so it

didn't prompt me for mine.

But there is a section
that allows you

to sign up for a free account.

And the account is
absolutely free,

and it's definitely
worth it, because it

allows you to download
all of this software.

So I'm going to
cancel this download.

Then you would download the
second file, unzip them.

They all unzip into
a single folder.

And then you would be
ready to run the installer.

I'm going to go back
to the Downloads page.

And let's look at
Oracle Linux now.

So I click at Oracle Linux
and Enterprise Kernel,

and notice we have this Oracle
Software Delivery Cloud.

This is very similar
to the other download.

However, it is a
separate sign in,

although the same log in
that you use for the Database

download can be used for
Oracle Linux and VM as well--

Oracle Linux being Oracle's
implementation of the Linux

operating system, and Oracle
VM being their Enterprise

Virtualization software.

Either of those is
downloadable here.

Now I'm going to click
on the plus again

to See All Server and
Storage Systems Downloads,

because we want to
look at Solaris 11--

just point something out, here.

Solaris 11 by Oracle is
its own operating system.

You would install that on a
machine or a virtual machine

in order to use the
Solaris 11 environment.

You can download and install
Oracle Database on Solaris 11,

so this might be of use if you
want to go this Solaris route.

I wanted to point out,
here, that there's

two different packages
that can be installed.

The first one is
download for SPARC,

and that's referring to
the SPARC chip architecture

that Oracle Hardware--

formerly Sun Hardware-- uses.

So it's a different
chip architecture.

So

Unless you happen to have a
SPARC server laying around

that you can use,
you'll more likely want

to go for the second option,
which is download for x86.

x86 is the basic Pentium
base chip architecture

that most people's
home computer uses,

and so yes, Solaris 11 can
run on your home computer.

If you did want to use
it on a physical machine,

you would need a
fresh, clean machine,

or you'd be blowing away
your old operating system.

Of course, you have
the possibility

of putting it into a virtual
machine as well, which is

what we want to look at next.

Again, expand this, and
we'll look at VM VirtualBox.

VM VirtualBox is Oracle's
desktop virtualization

software.

So VM VirtualBox is
available for a number

of different platforms.

Here we see the windows
32-bit, 64-bit platform.

So if we have a
Windows machine and we

want to run VirtualBox on it
and do desktop virtualization,

which would allow us to
run different operating

systems from our home machine,
we download that package.

It's available for
Mac OS X. And then

we can see a number of
different Linux distributions.

So the packaging of the
product can be tailored exactly

to whichever distribution
of Linux that you're using--

either 32-bit or 64-bit.

Click to download the
product, and off it goes.

OK, now cancel that.

What I also wanted to point out
was this very important link--

Oracle VM VirtualBox
Pre-built Appliances.

We'll click that.

What these are are pre-built
appliances for VM VirtualBox.

So even if you did install
VirtualBox on your home machine

to run different
operating systems,

there's quite a bit
of set up involved

in cutting out a virtual
disk, getting the CD mounted

with whatever operating
system version you're using,

and getting all of that set up.

What a pre-built appliance
allows you to do is simply

download a file-- which
will be a very big file--

but you download that file, and
then in VirtualBox, you simply

import that into
the software, and it

creates the entire
virtual machine for you.

So for instance, we have
a number of different ones

available.

The Database App Development
VM has Oracle Linux 5,

Database 11g, and then a
number of other things,

such as Oracle SQL Developer,
for accessing the database.

So all of that is
right in the file.

Simply download it, import it,
then you can use Oracle Linux

5 and 11g.

I do want to point
out that there

is no pre-built appliance
at this time for Oracle 12c,

which is our subject.

However, if you want
to look at version 11g,

you can do that through
Oracle VM VirtualBox Pre-built
