I sing on cruise ships with my girlfriend,

so we get to travel a bit together,

and it’s very sweet for us. We’re very lucky.

I’m curious, what kinds of music are you doing?

I’m sure it’s quite a range.

Yeah. I sing, like, jazz, opera,

Golden Age musical theater,

So you can do everything.

Hello. What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Maddi Jane, I’m 24 years old,

and I grew up in Chicago.

What?! Ah! Ah!

I’ve been there. Oh, my God.

We got a rapper-singer from Chicago here,

and I feel like I’m at a disadvantage

now that I’m trying to get you on my team.

[ Laughter ]

I’m on "The Voice."

[ Laughs ] I’m on "The Voice"!

This is the result of a lot of hard work coming together.

When I was about 9 years old, my guitar teacher

posted a YouTube video of me singing.

And one of the producers from

"The Ellen DeGeneres Show" found it.

And you’ve been singing for how long?

Well, my mom says I’ve been singing

ever since I was in my baby bouncer.

That opportunity on "Ellen" launched me

into doing covers on YouTube.

A cover I did of "Price Tag"

just passed like 100 million views.

That means so much to me.

When I was 19, I made the decision

to move to Los Angeles by myself.

I have been focusing on teaching myself production,

putting out albums.

I’m a pop female singer, I’m a songwriter,

I’m a pianist, I’m a guitarist, and I’m also a producer.

Being on "The Voice," I’m so grateful.

The coaches, to me, represent people that have pioneered

and blazed a trail that we get to follow.

That was so fun to listen to, and then when I turned around,

so fun to actually watch you perform.

You’re a star.

Oh, thank you so much.

Having somebody with that level of confidence

and stage presence,

but also with the voice to back it up...

It is not easy to rap-sing.

All of that takes a lot of breath,

takes a lot of rhythm and flow.

You did all of it really well,

and we don’t get a lot of artists like you on "The Voice."

I think the reason why it took everybody a second

to turn around is, one,

we’re not used to rappers coming on the show.

Because it is so difficult to rap and sing,

like John was saying, there were like a couple of moments

where it felt like the breath control wasn’t there.

Yeah. But when you switched into your full-on singing voice,

I think that’s what made me and John turn simultaneously.

There’s an added bit of pressure that goes on the artist,

because they’re working so hard to get the chair turns,

and instead of you kind of shrinking in

or being distracted by it, you instantly started turning up

this side of the crowd, then you ran to that side

and turned up that side of the crowd.

And that’s really what we look for on the show.

And you’re obviously a star, like everybody said.

What I would bring to you as a coach

is I like to genre blend, and also, like, my whole job here

is just to platform young artists

and to give them the opportunity to tell their story

and show the songs that they grew up listening to

and just be a support system for that.

My name is Devon Sutterfield.

I’m 29 years old, and I’m from St. James, Missouri.

Family means the world to me.

It’s the most important thing to me.

When I was 1, my biological father,

he passed in a car accident.

In a drunk driving accident, actually.

And I was 4 years old when my mom remarried.

My stepdad’s name is Tracy, but he’s been my father

since I can ever remember.

He bought me my first guitar.

17 years. 17 years.

And he’s been my role model.

He’s a hardworking man.

He really cares about his family.

I think that’s rubbed off on me to where I am as a man.

I’m working with my dad in construction,

10, 12 hours a day.

When it comes to family,

a man just knows whenever he’s got to make sacrifices.

I’ve not really had the chance

to pursue my music like I want to,

just because kids and job and family comes first.

To have the opportunity to work

with Dan + Shay would be incredible.

I see that people are carrying

a lot of heavy equipment.

I can’t help it as a chiropractor

to look at their posture and be like,

I’m very gentle and I’m very specific in my adjustments.

I would have loved to adjust everybody on set. [ Laughs ]

My name is Donny Van Slee.

I’m 30 years old and I’m from Weeki Wachee, Florida.

After high school, I got my bachelor’s.

Then eventually I decided

that I wanted to do an internship in Colorado,

and I had to pass through Nashville.

It blew my mind, the fact that it was a Monday night,

all the venues had multiple floors that had live music.

I just didn’t know that existed.

I tried out at this venue, and they put me through

something called Honky Tonk School.

They taught me how to play with a band, talk to the crowd.

Nashville has prepared me for this moment,

but I’ve never played a stage like this before.

I’m just so grateful. I hope the coaches will hear

my voice and be like, "Oh, man, that’s different."

I've been playing music professionally for 12 years.

Playing clubs, playing bars, playing restaurants,

And then I had a moment that totally changed my life.

I sat in front of my phone, pressed record.

The video was a gift from God.

It was a true viral moment.

From that moment on, my career was different.

I went from a girl singing at a bar

to somebody who could sell tickets.

Next thing you know, I'm playing in Scotland,

I'm playing in England and Switzerland.

Headed to the next stop.

I'm getting asked to sing at NASCAR,

winning awards in Nashville for artist of the year.

It's just amazing.

I'm excited to get the chance to share my voice with the coaches.

I'm from Hong Kong, but I currently reside in Chicago.

Hong Kong -- it was such a great experience

because I was surrounded by all types of people.

To me, Hong Kong is just, like, a mixing pot

of culture and art, and I loved it.

In primary school, I did every single musical theater show.

We had a singing competition, and I was the very first winner.

In high school, I was lucky to have a music scholarship.

I did stage band, I did choir,

and so I sang every moment I could.

I just love being able to express myself

in anything that I do, and music is the number one.

But crochet is kind of where my heart's at.

Crochet feels like I'm building something.

It's, like, functional.

It makes people happy, and it's handmade.

I mean, I made this, right?

This vest took a full week to make. [ Laughs ]

So, I've noticed that coaches give their artists gifts,

and I want to give a matching vest to whoever turns around.

Hopefully if someone turns around. Oh, my God.

How's it going? Hello.

Being from Hawaii, you're just cruising in the back of the car,

checking the waves.

You always say, "What's up?" Throw a little shaka.

I go surfing all the time with my buddies.

It's always like a challenge to try to blow the tail.

Blowing the tail is like a turn on the waves.

Like, boom.

You just feel on top of the world,

like you're the man.

One of my favorite things is definitely freediving.

It's like you're in a whole 'nother world.

Freediving is 100% all holding your breath.

My dad was an incredible freediver.

He could hold his breath for five minutes.

But, unfortunately, I was too young

to be able to freedive with him

because my dad passed away when I was 6 years old.

He had a shallow-water blackout.

What that is, is when you go to the surface too fast,

you essentially black out and sink.

No one was there to save him.

Really hard time, for sure, for me.

Um... [ Sniffles ]

But, uh, he's been gone for so long,

I've come to peace with it,

and it's made me so much more grateful for everything.

And whenever I am freediving,

it definitely connects me to him.

I know he's watching over me.

My style is surfer boy, reggae, rock music.

Freshman year of high school is when I started my band.

My band is my ohana.

"Ohana" means "family,"

and we play local shows all over the place.

But being here on "The Voice," this is probably the craziest

thing that I've done in my music career so far.

He's competitive, and he has such a good energy.

I would want to be his coach.

I'm Gene Taylor.

I'm 33 years old.

I live in Brooklyn, New York, right now,

but I'm originally from Vernon, New Jersey.

Look at that. Can you see yourself framed here?

I would not be here

if it weren't for my mom adopting me.

He was six months old. He had been abandoned in the hospital,

and it took us seven and a half years

for his adoption to become final.

So, at 8 years old, he brought the gavel down

in the courtroom for his own adoption. Right.

My mom is completely selfless.

She chose me from day one.

She saw me, wanted me, and kept me the entire time,

and I'm blessed for that.

She had a lot to go up against.

She was a single mom.

She raised me and my sister.

We didn't have, like, a lot of money,

but she still made the time and the effort

to make sure that her kids had

some type of musical enrichment in our lives.

From a little child, he just blurted out musical tunes,

and it made him the little boy that he was.

I'm just happy that he's followed his heart.

For about the past seven years,

I've been a working musician in New York,

teaching guitar, teaching voice, playing music for babies.

I did some wedding gigs.

My name is Gene Taylor.

I am from Brooklyn.

I am 33 years old. Oh, my goodness!

I always love a tenor that can sing

those beautiful, big notes.

But also, you had so much finesse.

It was just so expertly done as a vocalist.

John: You look at this group of coaches,

they're pretty new to the show.

Can you actually tell us a little bit about yourself,

like a little bit about your story?

So, I'm originally from Vernon, New Jersey,

and actually, my mom is here with me.

My mom adopted me when I was a baby.

Oh, wow.

It's been 33 years of just singing and doing music

and being in bands, doing some theater.

Yeah, I hear the theater.

Your voice is so elegant.

It's like you could hear, like, some classical vocal influences.

Yes. You could hear, like, Nat King Cole,

and then you're singing rock.

It's like an interesting combo. Mixture.

Yeah. There's a lot of blends, for sure.

I did see John kind of taking a nap

over at craft services a while ago.

I think I saw it, as well.

John: It's intriguing, saying

that I was the one taking a nap

when everybody else was sleeping

while I was pushing the button

and turning my chair. [ Laughter ]

John slipped when he pressed the button. I'm wide awake.

I saw his head fall down. He literally was falling asleep...

Wide awake! ...and he hit the button.

I'm wide awake! We're all joking around.
