He took her by force.

She was 16.
That was three years ago now.

of two of my missing sisters.

I wanted a picture of the third one,
but wasn't able to get one.

Recently I was at my uncle's house
in Snuny...

where I saw a girl
who looked just like my sister,

who is now in Raqqa,
but Wadha is more beautiful.

Wadha was gang-raped by ISIS.

She's now in ISIS captivity
and I know nothing about her.

My ten-year-old sister...

when ISIS struck, she was eight.

I raised her
because our mother was sick.

She called me Mother.

I love her more than I love myself.

ISIS gang-raped her.

After six months she called us.

She said an Arab woman
gave her the phone.

She was in the hospital.

I asked her what happened.

"Did you get hit by airstrikes?
Or did they hurt you?"

She said men from Tel Afar gang-raped
her when she said she was Yezidi.

She stayed in Mosul for 25 days.

They separated her
from our other sisters,

gang-raped her,
and sold her to the Syrians.

My father, next to me,
heard us talking on the phone.

He was heartbroken
and shortly thereafter fell ill.

Two days before his death,
he told me,

"I wish I could see my girls
one last time before I die."

ISIS arrived August 3rd,
and Peshmerga left us.

Stationed at the school,
they secretly withdrew.

ISIS took control
and cut off the road.

Our village was besieged for 12 days.

We screamed for help,
but no help came.

On August 15th ISIS gathered
all of us in the school

and told us to become Muslim
or they'd kill us.

We refused to convert.

They collected our cell phones,
money and jewelry

and moved all women and children
to the second floor.

The men stayed on the main floor.

Next they took groups of men,
one at a time,

and when it came time for the fourth,

I thought,
let me go see what's going on.

They took us in four vehicles

and we were escorted by ISIS.

They brought us here.

I stood here.

Right here. I remember.

They shouted Allahu Akbar
and opened fire.

I could feel the bullets
as they hit me.

One bullet hit here.

A second one here.

Another one here.

A bullet right here
and another above it.

I was hit with five bullets.

The sixth one I got because
whoever was still moving

was finished off
with a shot to the head.

The shooter approached me
and shot me right here.

You can still see my scar.

He thought he'd killed me.

I knew him. We used to work together.

When they left, two men yelled out,
"Is anyone else alive?"

We crawled out.

I looked around

and there were about 50 men dead,

as far as I can remember.

We crawled over to that house.

When I was inside, through the holes,

I could see ISIS bulldozers
burying the bodies.

Hanna, my brothers were killed.
Those were my brothers.

This one, this one, this one,

this one, this one and this one.

This is my nephew.
He's still in ISIS captivity.

That's my mother.

I went there a lot with my father
and mother and some of my sisters.

We would spend the better part
of the day there,

looking for truffles,
with Basse, Alya, and Hina.

Wadha was almost nine
when kidnapped by ISIS.

She must be 12 or 13 now.

when I start to remember...

because everything comes back.

I was about to enter this house, but

when ISIS showed up.

He used his gun to hit my little
sister, Wadha, whom I had raised.

It was awful to see her being pulled
by her arm and forced into their car.

I saw them drive off with them.

No one else
would've been able to stand this.

They'd have run toward them
and been kidnapped or killed.

I endured it all and later escaped.

AUGUST 3RD, 2014
74TH YEZIDI GENOCIDE

The other day a girl returned.

She doesn't know who her family is
and can't recall her name.

That's why we tattooed their names.

The ISIS leader didn't let me write
her whole name.

He said, "I'll cut off her arm

Before she escaped in 2015,
ISIS took her to an office,

where she saw her own photo
with a price on it.

Later, after Mosul was liberated, in
that building anyone could see this.

She was with us when we were
in Tel Afar Citadel prison.

This is Alya after she returned.

Poor thing.

They rubbed ash all over their faces,

-trying to make themselves ugly.

They gathered them here
after they brought them from Kocho.

In the morning, they took the older
women to the irrigation pool,

83 women, including my mother,
are in this mass grave.

All the women wore white,
like angels from heaven,

because the traditional clothing
of our people is white

and thank God and Tawûsê Melek
we're proud of who we are.

Our hearts are pure
and our intentions are good.

Because our beliefs, values and dress
code are different from theirs,

the women were brought here.

They said kill us,
because we won't convert to Islam.

They refused to convert,
so they were massacred here.

My name is Saeed Murad Basee.

I'm from Iraq, from Sinjar.

Some of you may not know Nadia,

but I'm the brother of Nadia Murad
who won the Nobel Prize.

But whether it's me,
my sister, or Hanifa,

we're all here to deliver
the same message,

and to create awareness
of our plight.

True, we've been awarded
the Nobel Prize,

but nothing can compensate
for everything we've lost.

We will always be broken.

To this day, the Yezidis
have never harmed anyone.

When ISIS besieged Kocho, my village,

of the 1,726 people in it,
only a few survived.

I became one of its victims.

On August 3rd, 2014,
I witnessed five of my sisters

being captured
and carried away by ISIS.

After six months,
one of them called us.

When my father heard her voice,

and found out what had happened
to her, he suffered a massive stroke.

Two hours before he died,
he said to me,

"I need you to promise me something."
"Yes," I said. "Tell me."

He said, "Find your sisters
and try to free them from ISIS."

I promised him I would.

I started to search for them,

and in 2015, I rescued two of them.

I rescued my seven-year-old sister
and my 17-year-old sister as well.

They now live in Germany. Since 2015
I've been living in Iraq by myself.

Of the 1,726 people in my village,
only a few survived.

Here in Poland, I see young men
and women leading normal lives

and my heart breaks for us.
It breaks for my people.

like we used to.

She was held by ISIS for a year.

Zina and Alya were held separately.

I concocted a great scheme

and to ask ISIS to let Zina
come stay with her.

Alya told them she was dying
and needed to see Zina.

It was just in time.
One ISIS leader, Abu Ali,

a rapist and head of ISIS
in Tel Afar,

was about to marry Zina off
to one of his sons.

We managed to liberate her and Alya
before that happened.

and take her to a room.

They selected the pretty ones
for themselves

and for other ISIS in Mosul.

My sister Wadha and I were together

and with every name they called out,

I became more afraid
and tried to hide,

hoping God would help me.

I thought I'd be able to escape,
but nobody could escape them.

Before this,
the men would examine the girls.

They dressed up in hijabs
and women's clothing

and examined us to see
if we were virgins or not.

They gathered us together

and based on our looks,
they created a lottery.

They drew lots as to who would win,
younger or older,

shorter or taller, pretty or plain,
with eyes of a certain color.

They didn't leave anything out.

We smudged our faces with ash to not
look attractive, but nothing helped.

We were scared to death.

I tried to electrocute myself
in the bathroom

by pulling electrical plugs
from their sockets in the shower

I thought this would kill me,
but I only fainted.

One man saw me doing it
and beat me up.

He said they wouldn't let me die
in such an easy way

without first being married
and tortured.

I begged him to kill me.

He said
an easy death wasn't possible.

He said that Islamic law
forbade him to kill me.

My nine-year-old sister,
who is now 11 and still captive,

tried to hide behind me.

They pulled her hair
to take her away.

In the end they got her, even though
I begged them to leave her alone.

She was screaming,
as they dragged her away.

Muhsin, were there many of you
when they shot at you?

Yes, maybe 85 people, maybe more,

when those fanatical Muslims

gathered us in a group.

Yeah, it was scary.

I was in one of those groups
that went to the massacre site.

When they shot us
they were filming it.

They recorded us too.
These videos were made public.

ISIS wouldn't do anything
without filming it.

They filmed us as well.

Our government
tries to hide the truth,

attempting to cover up the genocide,

thereby thwarting
international protection for us.

I mean, our remains are there
in mass graves for all to see.

There is no protection.

When I return to my house,
it's surrounded by Muslims.

How can I be sure the next government
won't let this happen again?

I'd be better off dead

the way we want them to,

They kept telling us

they took all the women to Syria.

They just said, "You will convert
to our religion because it is good."

ISIS women kept saying
the word forbidden to us.

They used this word to refer to us
and they kept humiliating us,

by saying it again and again.

None of the children's parents
were with them

and some children
were only three years old.

We had to take care of them.

They urinated on us
and cried all night.

A woman would visit us
and tell us to sit down.

We sat on the floor

and she'd read the Qur'an to us,

and tell us to repeat after her.

She said,
"Repeat the verses after me."

And if you didn't?

If we didn't study it and convert,
they'd make us get married.

What did you do?

There were pieces of glass
from a broken window.

Two of my friends and I cut
our wrists, but nothing happened.

They took us to the doctor right away

and asked us why we'd done it.

I asked them, "Would you be okay
if someone forced you

to do something
you didn't want to do?"

They took us to three large rooms.

They put each of us in a room.

And then...

And then...

One of them, 25-year-old

who were kidnapped that year.

I lived my childhood
as a village girl in Kocho,

south of the Sinjar region.

I did not know anything
about the Nobel Peace Prize.

I knew nothing about the conflicts
and killings

that took place
in the world every day.

I did not know that human beings
could perpetrate

such hideous crimes
against one another.

As a young girl,
I dreamed of finishing high school.

It was also my dream to have
a beauty parlor in our village

and to live near my family in Sinjar.

But this dream became a nightmare
when the genocide began.

As a consequence,
I lost my mother,

six of my brothers...

and many nieces and nephews.

Every Yezidi family
has a similar story to tell,

one more horrible than the next.

Because of this genocide, the social
fabric of a peaceful community

has been torn apart.

A whole society that was carrying
high the banner of peace,

and a culture of tolerance,
has become fuel for a useless war.

The goal of ISIS, to eradicate
the Yezidis, will be achieved

unless we are provided
the appropriate protection.

In the 21st century, in the age
of globalization and human rights,

more than 6,500 Yezidi women
and children have been taken captive,

to be bought and sold and sexually
and psychologically abused.

It's inconceivable that
the conscience of the leaders

of 195 countries around the world

is not mobilized
to liberate these girls.

What if they were a commercial deal,
an oil field, or a weapons shipment?
