In this lesson, we'll do a really playful exercise where we'll draw words by how
they

sound or by their definition.

By doing this, we'll start to look at letter spacing, overlapping and
legibility.

Okay, I've called this exercise furry words and that's because furry is such a
great word

to draw.

I'm going to start off by really faintly pencil sketching in the word furry,
just quite loose

to give myself a rough guide.

So F-U-R-R-Y, there we go.

And now I'm going to use those pencil lines as a guide to start drawing this
word as furry

as I can.

So we're being quite literal here, we're drawing the word furry as furry as
possible.

Here's an R. And for the middle, we'll get the fur going the other way.

Here's the next one.

And there's the Y.

And we can maybe add a few little details inside the letter.

A bit of extra fur.

Really enhance that furriness.

And there we go.

Maybe we can get this even furrier.

Maybe we can start doing a few little loops in the fur.

So I've lost the pencil lines this time,

and I'm just going to go for it.

I'm going to do the F, add a few more details,

maybe a few details on the outside.

We can overlap these letters a little bit now

to get them to look as furry and as fluffy as possible.

And this is the point where we have to start looking at

if you can still read it as a word.

Are we overlapping too much? Are we too furry?

We can kind of work this out as we go along.

Add in those details.

Try and make this word playful and fun.

As furry as possible.

There we go, a few more extras outside.

but maybe we can join these letters up to make it one big lump of fur. So here's

the part of the F, from the F we can go into the U and then we'll draw in the

bottom of the R. Let's just remind ourselves where we are in the word,

finish off the F and here's the U and the R. I'm going to connect this one to
the

rest of this R.

Let's finish that off and then the Y.

There we go, all connected, so we can add a few little bits of detail.

And there we go, that's pretty furry.

We can maybe even add a quick bit of shadow to the sides,

just to help lift it off the page.

So it doesn't matter if you've made any mistakes

or you're not happy with how this looks,

just keep moving along, have another go,

keep drawing, keep practicing,

until you're happy with the furriness of your word.

and the shadow I'm adding is to the kind of the left-hand side and the bottom so

it's as if the lights coming from the top right and it's just casting a

little shadow onto the bottoms and to the left-hand side of each word so every

time I'm faced with a left-hand side or the base of a word I'm just adding a

thicker line it doesn't have to be too accurate just to get the idea across

maybe a little bit there inside there there we go maybe a bit more detail

there we go furry

and then we can move on and do the same for the next word let's go for something

a bit different let's go for slime so I'm going to use the pencil lines just to

kick me off just to get me

more comfortable with drawing the word. So I'm just going to sketch out really
quick in pencil

the word slime. Now like furry I want to make this look as slimy as possible.
And because I'm left

handed I often start on the right hand side, the furthest point away from the
beginning of the word

just so I don't smudge it as I go along. And I'm going to add drips

and slime all the way to the bottom of each of these letters just to make this
look as slimy

as possible. And like the furry I can add a few details, a few drips inside.

Moving on, also trying to make this look fairly irregular. So trying to make it
look as normal

as possible or as realistic as possible. So the drips are different lengths,
they're coming off

different points.

Maybe some are dripping off the side.

Just trying to get as much of that definition into the words as possible.

So here's the L, maybe a really big drip.

And yes, here we are, the word slime made of slime and maybe we can have some
drips

dripping into the own letter itself. There we go and we can have a few drips

falling down, maybe even a puddle at the bottom. A little bit more detail.

There we go.

I'm just going to try one more now without the pencil guides

and I'm just going to try and make this a little bit more free form.

So I'll start with the E again. I'm thinking about those drips where

they're falling. Sometimes without the pencil guide you

can create something a little bit more unpredictable,

a little bit less designed so to speak.

Here, look, the M is falling a bit higher.

So it's making it look a bit more dynamic.

And so every time the letter goes to the bottom,

all these drips are just slowly dripping away.

Add a few details.

Now, when you're drawing words backwards

or spelling it out backwards like this,

it's really easy to spell things wrong.

And I do it all the time.

So, by all means, work quickly,

but try and think a little bit

about what's coming up next every time.

Okay, there's the L. Now the S, this is going to be tricky, so maybe this part's

dripping onto itself.

And again, we could add another shadow, a few more details,

add a shadow to this one.

And the shadow is just a really quick way to give your letters

and your designs that bit of extra boldness

to help them jump off the page.

I'm going to add some shadows to the drips as well.

So I'm just working my way along using the left-hand side

and the bottom of the letter again.

I think when you're doing this, it's important that all the drips go directly
downwards.

If they start dripping off to the side, it might kind of look a bit too strange.

I'm just going to finish up the shadows on this E.

And there we go, slimy slime.

So these are kind of our textured words, furry and slime.

We'll go on to sounds and how to incorporate sound in our work.

So I'm going to try with the word boom, I think.

I'm just going to write it out, get a feel for the letters.

So here's the word boom.

Naturally, I'm just drawing it quite bold.

To kind of match the sound it's making in my head.

Maybe actually, to make it really boom, we can add an extra O.

So on this one, I'm just overlapping the letters a little bit,

just to kind of get them really close together.

I'm going to put that extra O in.

and the M and maybe even an exclamation mark as well.

So this is working quite well. We're getting a lot of sound from this word but

let's try and take this even further. So maybe if you did the B really small

and that first O a little bit bigger and gradually increase the scale.

Maybe we can get an even an extra couple of O's in there.

To really help us get that huge scale.

And then an exclamation mark. And we can even just start overlapping our
letters,

even overlapping previous drawings. It doesn't really matter. We're just trying

to get as much of the definition into this work as possible.

I'm going to try again. I'm going to maybe elongate these letters a little bit
more.

Just trying to capture as much energy, as much of the definition of the word as
I can

into these letters.

So I'm just kind of playing here, just trying to get a feel

for how I think this word should look.

So already I'm making this M pretty big.

There we go.

I'll just draw part of the exclamation point there.

And maybe we can even have some explosive shapes, as if these O's

were speakers.

a few more details. There we go, boom.

There's loads of sound words that are great to practice drawing with. Boom,
buzz,

crack, all these words make great typography. But let's try something a

bit more difficult. Let's try concepts. So let's try the word angry. So how do
you

make the word angry look angry? Well to me it would be kind of maybe jagged,

maybe looking a little bit unconventional, as if the letters are

twisting with rage. So I'm just going to try a few quick ideas.

Maybe they need to be a bit chunkier to try and almost make them look like
they're shouting.

We could connect them up.

I'm just trying to make this word look as angry as possible.

So here, I'm not trying to overthink things too much.

I'm letting my hand and my pen do a lot of the work.

I'm trying to imagine that anger inside of me

and trying to get it to come out into these letter forms.

This one's going to be really, really out there.

I'm really getting angry

that these aren't looking angry enough.

So maybe some more points.

Maybe these sharp edges,

these points are working really well.

So let's incorporate some more of those.

Maybe there's a kind of lightning bolt of rage

coming off the R here.

And again on the Y.

Really, really angry.

Maybe we can add a 3D element

and a bit of extra detail

just to kind of enhance the emotion going on in these letters.

So a bit like adding the shadows to the letters,

imagine the 3D elements is on the left-hand side

and the bottom of each letter.

So I'm just adding these shapes

from the furthest points from that side

to add that 3D effect.

And maybe add some angry texture to part of them.

There we go, angry. How do we make a word look really angry?

What I really love about drawing words like this, especially words like angry,

that are filled with so much emotion, is kind of drawing them contradictory to
their definition.

So we could have the word strong here, looking really bold and strong.

But what happens when we draw that word so it doesn't look strong at all?

So these are really big, solid, stable letters,

and you totally associate this with the word strong.

But what happens when we make this word strong look really weak and feeble?

How does that affect how we read that word?

Is it still strong? Is there a kind of hidden meaning or a joke going on here?

I think sometimes that play with definitions and play with letter forms

can really make the person reading your work

change their perception on what they're reading or make them think twice about

what you're trying to say.

So that word strong is definitely looking a little bit flimsier, but how can we
make

that look even more flimsy?

Maybe if the edges were rounded, maybe if they were broken, so we could split
this S

up into rounded, broken pieces.

and so because I haven't left myself enough space across the page the G and

the N are falling lower than the rest so that's kind of enhancing the fact

that this isn't strong it's kind of falling away a little bit and then we

can add a cast shadow just behind this to make it look like it's floating

But we can kind of keep going with this.

We can keep going with the letter designs

to really find a way of drawing it

that makes it look exactly how you want it to mean.

I think it's always important

to do something slightly unexpected in your work.

That's a good way of making your work

stand out against other people's.

So here I'm just imagining another letter, identical, is just drawn just behind
it and

slightly offset.

Again, not trying to be too precious or too refined, just trying to get the idea
down.

There we go, strong.
