All language subtitles for 02 - Creating concepts with Grease Pencil

- [Tutor] Let's start by looking at how to concept

inside of Blender, by using the 'Grease Pencil'.

First, go to "File," "New,"

and click on 2D animation.

You don't need to save this,

so go ahead and click on "don't save."

From here, you'll be greeted by a brand new workspace,

that is completely dedicated to drawing.

Now don't worry if you're not a master draftsman,

we're just going to go ahead and explore.

As always, over here on the left,

you can left click and drag

and get an idea of what tools are available to you.

I recommend you just hold down your left click

and just start drawing.

Unlike drawing with a piece of paper,

you can go ahead and instantly erase,

or just outright undo.

Now as you're drawing, you're probably telling yourself,

you know these drawings,

this line looks really, really dim.

At the top here, you can change your strength

and kick it up.

If you're drawing with a pen tablet,

you can actually use pen pressure

to make your radius smaller or bigger,

or your strength, lighter or firmer.

I'm just using a mouse for right now,

just to demonstrate some pretty cool concepts.

Now I know what you're thinking,

you'd love to be able to erase,

but it seems like the racer's pretty weak as well.

Come up here and drag this all the way up

and you should be able to erase a lot better.

But I sometimes like to click on this right here,

erase points.

And this is a more deliberate erasing.

You see what's happening

when you're actually doing some of these drawings,

is you're actually creating a whole bunch

of really cool points.

In fact, you can come up to draw mode and go to edit mode,

and even rotate the view by holding down

your middle mouse button,

and you can see that there's actually lots of little lines

and points here.

That's one of the cool things

about drawing inside of Blender...

Let's go back to draw mode really quick.

Is that you can actually draw on multiple axes.

If you do want to draw in another perspective,

be sure to come all the way up to the top here

and change it to a different one.

I'm going to go to top.

And this is not going to be the best drawing,

but it does get the idea across.

You can even change it to view.

And just draw from whatever view

you're currently looking from.

Let me show you.

Sometimes it works out,

sometimes it works out a little bit weird, but that's okay.

You can go into edit mode.

And just go ahead and left click on this right here,

and you'll see we're actually in edge mode,

but you can also go to vertices mode if you'd like.

This kind of line edge mode is the easiest though.

I'm going to go ahead and left click and select it.

Click on my move tool,

and drag this back.

Of course, since these drawings are just simply points,

I can go to my dotted line right here

and try to move some of these.

It does move a little bit weird though,

so I recommend you come up here

and turn on proportional editing.

And I like to make sure that 'only connected' is on.

So now when I move these, they actually move a lot nicer.

So you see 'Grease Pencil' is a lot more

than just simply being able to draw.

You can actually manipulate these drawings

in a three-dimensional space.

If you want to,

you can always come back to your camera view

and come right back to that kind of flat view

that we had earlier.

You can even click up here to get different angles.

Now, one last thing I want to show you,

while you're drawing,

and in fact, let's go back to draw mode, not edit mode,

and click on my camera.

There we go.

Sometimes you may not be able to click on the camera,

so if that happens, you can always go to cursor,

and then click on this camera icon.

There we are.

The last thing I want to show you,

is that you're also able to use these tools down here,

either to click on line and make a line.

Then you can move these little points,

and hit enter to create that line.

But note, once you've created the line,

you can't actually edit it unless you go back to edit mode.

There aren't a little little points at the ends

that you can select.

Or another thing you could do,

is go ahead and create a curve.

Click, left click and drag,

and you'll see these little blue lines,

that you can go ahead and manipulate.

But again, just like before, once I hit enter,

that line is set

and I can no longer access those blue lines.

I instead have to go back to edit mode

and just manipulate these points by hand.

Regardless of which way you go about it,

the ability to draw inside of the 'Grease Pencil' window

is absolutely amazing.

Now, I will say that in the Blender 4.0 series,

it started to be more referred to as 2D animation,

but the name 'Grease Pencil' is still active

in different parts of Blender.

So don't get confused, it means the exact same thing.

Especially when you come up to "File," "New,"

it now says 2D animation,

so just be aware of that.

Generally speaking, we all still refer to the tool though

as 'Grease Pencil'.

So for that, go in there and see what amazing concepts

you can come up with for a spaceship.
