Previously, on
Billionaire Murders...

The 75-year-old founder of
generic drug company Apotex,

and his 70-year-old wife
were found dead,

believed to be found hanging
near their indoor pool.

Who would do that?

I just remember him saying
something that was just

so weird about cutting off
Barry Sherman's head and

rolling it down
the parking lot.

That much money
basically makes you

a kidnapping target.

I've lost. He's sealing
the entire file.

Honey was the extrovert
for the philanthropic work.

She didn't pull her punches.
She got right to the point.

She was tough...
She was tough.

I would
be like, "You can't do that,

you can't speak to
people that way."

Why did Honey die?

Did she have to
be out of the way?

The Sherman family deals in

extraordinary sums of money.

The financial press has said
that Barry Sherman is worth

between 3 1/2 and
4 1/2 billion dollars.

But my sources have told me
that if you were to somehow

put all of his investment
that he had around the world

together, you'd come up
with $10 billion.

Barry always was
a risk taker.

The generic drug business

for sure attracted
the rebels

because the establishment is

the brand name companies.

If you infringed upon
the brand-name patent,

the fine was in the hundreds
of millions of dollars.

But if, legally, you could
get away with it,

the upside was massive.

We have a substantial
stockpile of inventory,

which we acquired prior to
the issuance of their patent,

and under the
patent, the law,

it is therefore exempt
from infringement,

and we are free
to sell it.

The game he was in was

an unusually
high stakes game.

And he was making very,
very, very big bets.

He has gambled,
and won, and lost

literally hundreds
of millions of dollars

in his generic
pharmaceutical business,

in other businesses
he's been involved in.

Barry had many, many,
many side investments

other than Apotex.

Could be dozens,
maybe hundreds.

He was involved in all
kinds of activities of

every kind of description.

You know, he was a
bit of a deal junkie.

I have long thought
it's possible that

it could be
one of Barry's

many business
deals had something

to do with the murders.

He's made some
crazy investments.

Some of them worked out,
and some of them didn't.

There's certain people
in Barry's life that are,

they're not as buttoned down
as Barry's scientist friends.

People like long-time
business associate

of Berry Sherman,
Frank D'Angelo.

He's a colourful
character and,

you could not imagine more
different business partners

than Barry Sherman...

and Frank D'Angelo.

I had learned that after the
story comes out that

it's a double homicide,
the Toronto police had

taken a look at
Frank D'Angelo,

Any sustained relationship
a victim is having

with someone,
you have to go look at.

Many people that knew
Barry did not like him

having this relationship
with Frank.

Jack Kay, Barry's second
in command at Apotex,

there were many times
where he would say,

"You've got to
cut him loose."

As you look at potential
suspects in a homicide case,

one is, you look at people
that were in the circle.

Clearly,
family members,

because they're
always in the circle.

And the business associates,
like Frank D'Angelo,

would be in that circle.

Frank D'Angelo's
father was a grocer.

And, that's what Frank
grew up in. And so,

he had an interest in
fruit and vegetables.

In 2001,
Frank wants to

open up a plant for
juice bottling.

Apple juice was
my big product.

I was having a very difficult
time getting co-packers to

produce for me because a
company out of Quebec

was buying everybody.

So, I needed to
press my own apples.

Barry Sherman
happens to own

a giant manufacturing
plant for juice.

It's just one of the
many things Barry owns.

When I met Barry...

I made him an offer,
and then they asked me,

"So, okay, how are you
going to pay for this?"

Frank doesn't
really have any money,

but Frank decides that
there's parts of the plant

that he doesn't need.

He can sell that off and
use that money

to buy the plant
from Barry.

And Barry says, "Are you
telling me that you're going

to use my money to pay me?"
And Frank said,

"Yes, sir, that's
what I'm saying."

He looked me in the eye,
goes, "You've got a deal."

We shook hands, and
I was flabbergasted.

I couldn't believe that
people like this existed.

Barry says, "Let's go
in, partners, together.

I like you."

I think Barry Sherman
liked Frank because

he has a lot of what
Barry would call chutzpah.

So, Frank gets this
manufacturing plant,

and things start
working out quite well.

He's starting to
make some money,

some revenue is going
to Barry's investment.

With Barry's backing,

Frank expands beyond juice
into other beverages

Cheetah...

Frank D'Angelo, he's always
looking for the next scheme.

And, next thing is,
"Let's make beer."

And so, Frank comes
up with this idea.

He's going to go to Belgium,
which is the home of beer.

But Frank's credit card
is maxed out,

so Barry pays his
$50,000 debt...

And Frank buys
a plane ticket.

Frank finds the first brewery
on the road as he's driving

away from the airport,
goes in, has a drink of it,

and purchases with
Barry's money,

the recipe for that beer.

And he sets up a company
called Steelback Brewery.

Between 2002 and 2007,
Frank launches

11 different varieties
of Steelback beer,

and spends huge
sums on marketing.

And, there's a lot
of sponsorships

that come with this.

In sports tonight a name
change for Toronto's annual

ChampCar race.

Hamilton's Steelback Brewery
was announced today

as the new sponsor.

Despite all the promotion,
beer-drinkers were never

too keen on Steelback's
screw-cap plastic bottles...

or the brew, itself.

It was like, terrible.
Ha-ha!

But, I mean, I got a
case of it, and I...

And I'm not even
a beer drinker,

and I'm not a
connoisseur of beer.

I could tell it
was bad beer.

By the end of 2007,
Steelback and

D'Angelo brands has piled up
$120 million in debt

to more than
400 creditors.

$101 million of that was
owed to Barry Sherman.

The companies file for
bankruptcy protection.

And Barry, he installs his
24-year-old son, Jonathon,

as CEO of Steelback.

The press sinks its
teeth into the story of a

billionaire's son becoming
Frank D'Angelo's boss.

But Steelback fares no
better under Jonathan,

and shuts down
for good in 2010.

Through it all,
Frank and Barry,

they remain close friends.

It was an odd
relationship, to me.

Barry didn't have a lot of
patience for someone who,

you know, didn't speak the
Queen's English perfectly.

And then, here comes
along Frank D'Angelo.

Barry was not
a guy's guy.

Like, he wasn't going out to
the baseball game with guys,

or he wasn't playing
golf with guys.

He was at Apotex
with a lab coat,

day and night,
that's what he did.

Barry sees in Frank
somebody who is

really trying
to make money.

The other thing that I
believe is attractive to

Barry is that Frank is
rough around the edges.

I think he almost felt
he was playing with

the cool kids on the block

when he'd hang out
with Frank D'Angelo.

I think it was a refreshing
relationship for him.

I really think that Barry
Sherman loved him.

He had my back, always.

Never did he sandbag me...

or throw me under
a fucking bus.

He would jump in front
of the bus for me.

I trusted my dad,
and I trusted Barry

more than anybody
in the world.

And, we talked
about everything.

I'll give you my best
story about Barry.

Calls me on a Saturday.
And he says,

"What are you doing?"
I go, "I'm at the office."

He goes,
"Okay, I'm coming by."

So, I says, "Are you sure
you want to come by?"

He goes, "Yeah, yeah."
So, he comes by.

And he says, "Is Mama D's
open," which is a

little restaurant that we
had in our building

that I built for myself
and my customers.

I go, "No." He goes,
"But you cook."

I go, "Yeah."
So, we get in there.

And he goes, "You gonna
make something?"

So, I made him
some penne.

A little bit of spice, like
penne arrabbiata, right.

He loved bread, so I made
him some garlic bread.

Opened up a
bottle of wine,

we had a couple
glasses of wine.

Then, I go, "So, what do
you want to talk about?"

He goes, "Nothing, I just
wanted to have lunch."

Like, "What
the fuck, man?

Dude, you couldn't
fucking say to me?"

He goes, "No, I don't want
to seem like I expected it."

"But you did!

I just cooked for you,
for fuck sakes!"

He had a great
sense of humour,

he laughed his ass off.

He felt embarrassed to
ask me, "If I come by,

will you make me for lunch?"
He felt embarrassed...

'cause that's the
type of man he was.

He didn't expect nothing.

That was a
beautiful moment.

I love that moment.

Barry was like the
brother I never had.

In 2010, despite the failure
of Steelback brewery,

Barry funds one of Frank's
ambitious new projects...

It's The Being Frank
Show with Frank D'Angelo!

...Paying for airtime
on a local TV station that

broadcasts to the
greater Toronto area.

Please
welcome your host...

Hi, Frank,
come stai?

The other day I was
walkin' down the street...

The show stayed on
the air for years.

If you look at the things
that Barry funded for Frank,

you would scratch your head
because Barry, obviously,

is a very astute guy
when it comes to money.

You know, there wasn't
anything that I've read that

would like go, "Frank's a
good investment."

But I don't think
Barry cared.

And so, the next
thing is movies.

Frank wants to make movies.

Fredo, do what
you got to do.

By this time, Barry has
already funded a lot of

Frank's ideas, but he ends
up the executive producer

of a series of movies.

And Frank is
always the star.

Barry is always
presented with a script.

Barry loved the
movie business.

He read every script,
and he would

bust my balls
on punctuation.

You know, Barry was a
very proper speaker.

In our first movie,
"Real Gangsters!",

he felt that there was a
lot of gratuitous swearing.

And I said,
"That's the way they talk.

That's the way
gangsters talk."

So, he let it go.

Between 2013 and 2017,

Barry finances seven films
written and directed by...

and starring,
Frank D'Angelo.

Co-stars included
names like

Paul Sorvino,
Margot Kidder,

Robert Loggia,
and James Caan.

Barry got a kick out of
how fast we shot and

how fast it turned
into a reality.

Most of the time, he didn't
know who the actors were.

People don't
fucking understand,

Barry supported his friends.

That's a fact.

I'm not at all clear about
how that relationship endured.

I just found that
relationship puzzling

because Barry was...

who Barry was,
and Frank is...

Well, he's Frank.

I knew when Frank was at
Apotex because the

shouting matches that
they would get into.

I can only speak to
what I heard.

The way I
understood it was

Frank was needing
investment money.

Barry would ask probing
questions about

the nature of the deal.

And you know, Barry's
a quieter kind of guy.

He doesn't yell.

To me, there was no
need for Frank

to have that loudness

because he was five
feet in front of Barry,

and there is
no need to use

the kind of language
that he used.

I couldn't even close my
door to not listen because

it would permeate through
the shared wall.

And I said, "Barry, I could
just call security and

get this guy thrown out,
if you want," right, but...

he never asked me to and,
you know, and I never did.

It's not just
Barry's colleagues

who are wary of Frank.

In my investigation
of this case,

I learned the
Sherman children are

upset with their dad...

being friends with
Frank D'Angelo.

Particularly Jonathan...

since they worked together
at Steelback...

He strongly dislikes Frank.

And, there's a
real tension there.

We spoke
almost every day,

if not every day.

And ironically,
the last week of his life,

we only spoke Monday.

It was the first time he
missed my Christmas party.

And then, Friday
morning, I found out

like everybody else,
that they found the bodies.

When they're preparing
for the Sherman funeral,

one of things that the
children asked Jack Kay

to do, is, "Could you
please make sure

Frank D'Angelo
doesn't show up?

We don't want him at our
parents' funeral."

Jack is given the job of
calling up Frank,

and saying,
"I'm sorry, Frank,

but the children don't
want you there."

I've read stuff about Barry's
and Honey's murders,

and my relationship
with him...

alluding to the
fact that I'm shady.

I've worked my
whole fucking life.

I started a business
out of a fucking truck.

Shady? You know, people
are full of shit, mostly,

and when they don't
understand something,

they come up with
their own rationale.

If you think
back to 2017,

Barry was funding
Frank's businesses.

But Frank can't afford,
I don't think,

to pay all those liabilities.

Where was Frank on the
evening that they were killed?

What were his most recent
conversations with Barry?

You would need to
check all of that out.

I was interviewed
by the police,

and I'm not going to go
any further than that.

I was interviewed once.

Despite the suspicion among
those who disapproved of

Barry's relationship
with Frank,

I learn that both the police
and the Shermans'

private investigative team,
ultimately account for

Frank's whereabouts
during the days

surrounding the murders.

You don't arrest
people if, in fact,

you don't have any physical
evidence because...

it strikes me
they don't have

any physical evidence
in this case.

One time I was talking
to Mary Shechtman,

Honey's sister,
about motives and

who could have done it.

And she said, "Well, there's
no way Frank D'Angelo

would ever have done it
because he lost everything."

With Barry Sherman dead,

Frank D'Angelo lost his
source of funding.

When the facts finally
come out, and when they...

connect the dots,

I think that the police
will bring the...

perpetrator or
perpetrators to justice,

so the souls of
Barry and Honey

can finally
come to rest.

I hope to interview the
Sherman children about

their father's relationship
with Frank D'Angelo,

among other things.

I'd gone to great lengths
throughout the early part

of my investigation to
find members of the

Sherman family who
would talk to me.

In September of 2018,

I had put some questions to
Jonathan Sherman.

I know I'm going to
have a hard time

getting an interview.

I didn't realize how
hard it would be.

And then, one day
out of the blue,

Jonathan writes back
to me, an email.

And he said, "I'm willing
to meet with you

on the following
conditions."

One of them is
I can't record,

but I can take notes.

And, I have to agree to
give him editorial control

over anything I write
related to him.

And I write back politely,
but firmly,

saying, "I can't do that.

No journalist worth
anything would do that."

And, for a long time, that's
the last communication

I have with
Jonathan Sherman.

I'm still keeping in
touch with people,

and at one point,
a family member

of the Shermans
contacted me and

provided me with an important
piece of information.

My new family
member source has

shared with me a
chain of emails...

from 2015,
so two years before

Barry and Honey
are killed.

The chain of emails is
between Jonathan and

his father,
Barry Sherman.

In 2015 emails to his father,
Jonathan complains that

Frank D'Angelo is a
terrible businessman,

that he has lost
tens of millions,

if not $100 million
over the years...

and he thinks his father is
just wasting all this money.

Jonathan wants to know
why Barry is funding Frank

because he, as a Columbia
grad who was working

on his own businesses,
thought that he should

be the person who was
favoured more than Frank.

And so, in a
series of emails,

you see Jonathan
pleading with his father.

He wants his dad to
cut off Frank D'Angelo.

I have always
thought that

Barry considered
Frank a son.

I believe that
Barry felt that,

that Frank was the son
who really tried hard.

In those email exchanges
from back in 2015,

Jonathan is also lobbying
Barry for more investment

in his own ventures.

Jonathan decides to get
into the storage business.

So, he comes up with
this company and,

they start growing
the business.

How do you get the
business to grow?

Well, you go to
the 'Bank of Barry'.

The bank of Barry is
what the Sherman kids

refer to as their bank'.

It's their dad's money.

And so, Jonathan goes
to his dad and says,

"Could you give me
$250 million instead of

giving all that money to fund
Frank D'Angelo's business?"

Barry says, "I have the
right to decide if I should

give money to anybody,
and I'm giving money to

Frank D'Angelo because
I believe in him."

And then,
by the way, says,

in sort of an
ultimate mic drop,

"Here's a trailer to
Frank's latest movie."

Very soon after this awkward
discussion between

father and son,
Jonathan writes

an email to his
three sisters.

And he puts the subject
line: "Shareholders".

And, he puts that because
he sees all of them

as shareholders
in Apotex.

And then, he says, "I think
we need to talk about

whether Dad is competent
to run the business.

There's a process in Ontario
to remove somebody from

a company if they're
financially incompetent,

and we're going to show
that he's not competent by

showing he's got this crazy
relationship in business

with Frank D'Angelo."

And, one of the
three daughters

gives that email to Barry.

Barry sees it, and he
shows it to Jack Kay.

And, Barry said, "Look, see,
he's trying to take over my,

my empire." Barry pretty
much laughs it off.

It's now been ten months
since the discovery of

the Sherman bodies.

My continuing investigation
into the murders-

it's never wavered- but
I've got the impression

that neither the police nor
the private investigative

team are making
much progress.

The Sherman private
investigation team and the

Toronto Police, they're not
talking to each other for

the first year of the investigation.

But then, all of a
sudden, in October,

I get wind of a plan for
a press conference

to be held at Apotex.

So, I go there,
and there's got to be

at least 100 reporters.

And, Brian Greenspan
walks out,

and so do
ex-homicide detectives,

an ex-forensic
identification officer.

Brian Greenspan,
he doesn't come cheap.

You imagine the money, for
him to assemble this team.

He brought in very, very
highly-skilled detectives.

I mean, I'm not an expert,
but it had to be

in the millions of
dollars to do that.

Had to be.

Thank you for your
attendance today,

my name is
Brian Greenspan.

Brian Greenspan is
one of these guys who

loves the sound
of his voice.

And, he starts telling
people about how poorly

the Toronto Police
have investigated

Barry and Honey
Sherman's murders.

Police are required
by law to maintain

a certain professional standard...

in their approach
to investigations,

but in this case, at this
stage of the investigation,

the manner in which the
Toronto Police Service

conducted itself, fell well
below that standard.

Then he says things that none
of us have ever heard before.

The police failed to
properly examine...

and assess the crime scene
where Barry and Honey Sherman

were located in the
basement by the pool.

They failed to recognize the
suspicious and staged manner

in which their
bodies were situated.

Barry Sherman's legs
were outstretched,

with one crossed over the
other in a passive manner...

wearing his
undisturbed eyeglasses.

He says Barry's glasses
are perched

neatly on his nose.

He also says that Barry
is in almost a repose.

That's the first time
I've heard any real

public description of how
his body was found.

One of the first steps

in a murder
investigation is to

collect all fingerprints and

potential DNA
from the scene.

Aside from failing to
complete this standard

protocol of fingerprint elimination,

the police also missed at
least 25 palm or fingerprint

impressions that
were discovered by

our private team at the
scene once the house

had been turned
over to us,

after more than six weeks
of police presence.

He's shocked,
he's appalled.

He says it goes below the
level of what we would

expect from, you know,
a top homicide squad.

Police resources have
neither been

properly managed nor
effectively utilized.

Therefore, is this
new initiative...

as an attempt to reignite
an investigation,

the Sherman family has asked
me to announce the offer

of a reward of up to
$10 million...

for information leading
to the apprehension and

prosecution of those
responsible for the murders

of Honey and
Barry Sherman.

A call centre has
been established...

to collect tips and information,

24 hours a day,
7 days a week.

As this is going on, both
myself and other reporters

are trying to get comment
from the Toronto Police,

because we know that what
Greenspan is saying is

going to really upset
the Toronto Police.

And within a couple of hours,
Chief Saunders

ends up giving his own
press conference.

He says that Brian Greenspan
does not have a right to

reveal intimate details
of the crime scene.

Some things were disclosed
today that, uh, you know,

I have to be cognizant that
the suspect or suspects

no doubt are watching
this right now.

I know that for a fact.

And so, I want to be careful
to not present any evidence

to help that particular
person or individuals

that are responsible.

He says that by
describing in detail

how the bodies are found...

that's going to cause his
investigators a problem.

Mr. Green- Greenspan does not
have the entire investigation.

Justice Pringle has had
a look at the most recent

information to obtain.
My lead investigators

have the full understanding
of the investigation.

So, if you have
an opinion on it,

you're entitled
to that opinion.

We don't deal with opinions.
We deal with facts.

That's what we bring
before the courts.

And we have a very strong,
successful rate

in doing just that.

Were any leads generated
by the evidence

uncovered by
Greenspan's team?

Or, did the tip line
he set up receive

any useful information?

If it has, it's never
been made public.

Brian Greenspan did
the press conference and

put down the
Toronto Police.

And he pointed all of
their mistakes out.

But then, he didn't
do anything.

If they found fingerprints,
why didn't they come back

later on with what
their findings were?

I was waiting for that to
happen, and it never did.

Just two months after
the $10 million reward

is announced,
something happens that

shocks everyone who
knew anything about

Barry Sherman
and Apotex.

I get a call from a source.

This source knows
Jack Kay very well.

Jack Kay, Barry's second
in command for 35 years,

and he says, "You wouldn't
believe what just happened.

They fired him,
he's gone."

Now, that was
shocking to me.

Within a couple of hours,
I confirmed that, in fact,

Jonathan Sherman,
as a trustee of the estate,

walked Jack Kay out
the door of Apotex.

In a, I would say a
quite horrible manner.

And he did it a year
and a day after

his father and mother
were killed.

I thought, you don't
do that to Jack.

You don't walk him out-
you walk me out of the office.

You walk anybody else
out of the office.

You don't walk Jack
out of the office.

Jack Kay knew
everything about

the pharmaceutical industry.

And Barry's son was the
one who fired him.

Why he did that,

I am really not sure.

It's fascinating, isn't it,
when you think about it...

because Jack Kay
was a partner.

In terms of the integrity of
the company as a business,

it made no sense
that Jack Kay

would be bounced out.

I know for a fucking fact
that Barry loved Jack.

Loved him.

They were best friends.

When I found out,
I was shocked.

There
continues to be a

great deal of
speculation about

Jack Kay's dismissal
by Jonathan Sherman,

and what it all means.

Then in early 2019, I learn
about what could be

an explosive piece
of information.

A television reporter who
I knew had done a very,

very short item talking about
some video that had been

seized by police that
related to something

happening on the
Sherman's street.

So, I went back to
Old Colony Road and

just started
asking questions.

This home right here,
there's a camera that

looked right at
their driveway and

also picked up the
Sherman's driveway.

The crime scene tape
goes up on Friday.

They decide to look
at the Thursday.

So, they play it through,
and they see...

At around 9:30
in the morning...

somebody comes to
the Sherman house.

He gets out of his car,
goes to the front door,

They believe,
from what they can see-

and it's
quite indistinct-

but they say it looks
like he goes inside.

Then the person goes
back to his car,

back to the
front door,

back to his car,
three times.

In total, 29 minutes
he's in the area

of the Sherman home.

And it's eerie because
I know, by this time,

from my forensic sources,
the Shermans are

probably already dead
inside that home.

Who is this mystery man?

And, if he went inside,
how did he get in,

and what did he do?

Three days after my article
on this mystery man

comes out, Chief Mark
Saunders makes a comment

about the person
in the video

at an impromptu
press conference.

I can tell you we knew
who the person was,

why they were there...

was interviewed,
and so, um...

It's not in any way, ah...

we dropped the ball,

our officers did not
drop the ball.

Chief Mark Saunders said,
"We know who that person is.

We're not going to tell
you who it is."

Now, it's odd to have
a police chief

announcing
something like that.

When I was looking
into this story,

I went to see
Brian Greenspan.

I asked Mr. Greenspan
whether or not

he had seen this video.
He said he has.

"Did the person
go inside?"

And he said,
"Well,

because the video
is so grainy,

it's inconclusive,"
and that's as far as

he was willing to go.

The other thing I wanted
to know from him:

Were the four Sherman
children interviewed

by the police?

I really have no idea where
any of the Sherman children

were exactly at the
time of the murders.

And, he gets pretty
angry with me.

Soon after that meeting
he wrote to me,

and said the following:
"To suggest that any of the

Sherman children were
involved is shameful,

reckless and libellous.

It is an attempt by
people to cast suspicions.

And let me tell you,
those people

who make those claims
would be our suspects."

I wanted to interview
Jonathan Sherman,

and he
wouldn't do that.

So, I wrote him a letter
with 31 questions.

And, I end with,

"Were you in any
way involved in

the murder of
your parents?"

And, he sent me an email
back denying that

he had anything to do with
the murder of his parents,

and he had CC'd his lawyer,
Brian Greenspan.

He'd also CC'd Brandon
Price, who's by that time

the lead investigator
on the case.

And so, he did send his
answers to my 31 questions

to the police, but he
didn't send them to me.

As I continue my investigation,

i get a new tip, this one
about the Sherman estate.

Celia Pasternak called me,
and just started talking

a mile a minute about one
of the Sherman properties.

Kevin wrote a story
in the Toronto Star,

and the family were saying
they didn't want anybody to

know who the trustees of the
estate were because there was

a killer on the loose
and they were afraid.

But I knew a house that
Barry originally bought.

Now, the owners of that
home were the trustees

of the estate.
So, I called Kevin.

She gave me the address.

Our librarian did a
title search for me,

and I got this
document that

showed me
the house had

been transferred to
the four executors

of the Sherman estate.

Alex Glasenberg,
who's the Sherfam CEO.

Sherfam is, Sherman
Family Holdings.

Brad Krawczyk.

He is a member of
the Sherman family.

He's married
to Alexandra,

one of the
Sherman daughters.

Jack Kay,
who had been Barry's

second in command
at Apotex.

And Jonathan Sherman.

With that
information in hand,

I return in April to court
in what is my second attempt

to have the Sherman
estate unsealed.

The Sherman legal team
has said the names of

the executors can
never get out.

But, I have looked at a
title document that

showed the identities of
these four executors

are already out there.

And, it was helpful because
we ended up winning the day.

But the Shermans are
eventually granted leave to

appeal to the Supreme
Court of Canada.

I know that I might
wait for months...

only to fail at the
highest court in the land.

The following month,
there's another surprising

development at the scene
of the 2017 murders.

The house at 50 Old
Colony Road in North York

once stood as a
symbol of success.

Today, it's a reminder of
a violent double murder,

but soon,
it'll be gone.

When I heard the news that
they were going to knock

Old Colony down,
I didn't understand

how they could demolish...

a crime scene.

We continue to mourn the loss
of Honey and Barry Sherman.

This morning, North York
community council approved

a request by the Sherman
family to allow for

the demolition
of the home.

And it kept saying
on the news,

"The family want the
house demolished."

It was not considered a
crime scene anymore.

I drove over there...

and, I remember they
pulled a wall down.

And, I'm sitting
there in my car,

looking at Honey and
Barry's bedroom...

with a side table...

and the table lamp was
still sitting on the table.

And Honey's desk chair
was pulled out.

There are family photographs
all over the walls.

But the walls
were coming down.

It was extremely...

surreal,
it was really crazy.

In an unexpected twist,
it was after

the demolition of the
Sherman's home...

I actually had my one
and only look inside it,

when I met someone
who calls himself

an 'urban explorer'.

I first learned of the
urban explorer on Reddit.

It was a post from
a person who said,

"I went into the
Sherman home

just before it
was knocked down,

and saw
a bunch of things.

It was very weird,
very creepy."

I make contact
with this person,

and he shares with me
his videos and photos.

I'm not allowed to
ever use them.

I make that agreement.

But he tells me this
most interesting story.

On the Saturday
in May of 2019,

he's driving by- this is
the home where the

Shermans were murdered.

And, he decides,
"I'm going in."

He has his camera,
his video camera.

He's got a mag light,
'cause he knows the

electricity has
probably been cut.

He pulls up the
garage door...

Which makes a bit
of a creaking sound.

And, slides under it,
and close it down.

Now he's in the
darkened garage.

Our urban explorer
looks around...

and, he decides,
you know,

"I'm going to go
upstairs first.

I'm going to save the
swimming pool

where they died for last."

Our urban explorer goes
up the stairs, and...

he goes into
the main floor.

And, he just
does a tour.

He sees, you know, televisions,

some furniture is there.

I'm looking at
this and thinking,

"Could this furniture
not have been donated?"

On the counter
in the kitchen,

there's a couple
of beer bottles.

There's food products-
a bag of potato chips,

a couple of big
construction garbage bags.

It's like somebody
started to clean up,

and then just went on to
something else and

decided just to let
everything stay.

And he walks around,

and he sees various
things in the office

that Barry and Honey
shared upstairs.

He sees a bunch
of papers.

He sees little notes,
sticky notes

that Honey had left.

One was a reminder to
say something to

a really good
friend of hers.

Takes a picture of that.

And he's not a cop or a
private detective, but he,

he sees things that to
him look like evidence.

Like, "Why didn't somebody
bag this stuff up?"

So, he's wandering around,
and then he finally decides,

you know,
time's getting on,

"I should go down to the
swimming pool room."

He goes down to
the basement, and then,

the urban explorer goes
down the long hallway

to the swimming
pool room.

Who knows what the conditions
are going to be like?

He doesn't know.

That's a scene of a,
of a double homicide.

And, he just gets to the
swimming pool room...

And he hears a noise.

It's the noise of that
garage door opening again.

And all of a sudden,
his heart starts beating.

He realizes he's got
to get out of here.

He runs back
along the hall.

He goes out a door,

with his camera gear
on him and his light.

Climbs over the fence,
and he's gone.

The video told me that

a lot of really
important things

were knocked down when
that house was destroyed.

There was
information there.

My understanding
is there were

a lot of personal effects
still there.

And it really upset a lot
of Barry and Honey's

close friends, seeing that
house destroyed.

The children said they didn't
want it there anymore.

And, they're
the bosses now.

A few weeks later,
Kevin sent me

a photograph of
a thank you note to

Honey and Barry
from a friend of mine for a

donation that they had made
that was very generous.

And, that little
thank you note

was pinned over
Honey's desk.

And that was taken
by the photographer

that had broken in.

In October 2019,

almost two years after
the Shermans are murdered,

I'm back
in court again,

facing off against
Detective Constable Yim,

to try and get the
police warrants unsealed.

Detective Yim,
before each hearing,

provides the court and me
with an affidavit

laying out the
reasons why

all of his information
should be sealed.

It's usually
generic information like,

"We don't want to reveal
persons of interest."

But there's something
new this time.

Detective Yim has said that
parts of the document that

he's trying to maintain
the seal on relate to

the estate of Barry and
Honey Sherman,

and a light bulb
goes off in my head.

I say to him, "The
information relating to the

estate, is it part of
your case?" And he said,

after kind of a
thoughtful pause,

"It is embedded
in our case."

What Detective Yim
has told me,

either on purpose
or inadvertently,

is that the will of
Barry and Honey Sherman,

is part of their case.

I suspect that somebody
has told the police that

a family member
who got money,

or a family member
who didn't get money,

or another person
who didn't get money,

is a suspect.

In one of my earlier cross
- examinations of Yim,

I ask him, "Do you have
a theory of the case?"

And Detective Constable Yim
said, "Yes, we do."

And I take that to mean
they have an idea of

who did it, they just
can't prove it.

My other line of attack is
to argue that the

police investigation,
it's run out of steam.

So, it's in the public
interest to unseal the

warrant information, so we
can scrutinize the case.

What I'm trying to
show here is that

this is becoming
a cold case.

But Detective Yim, he
insists this investigation,

it's still active.

Under my cross-examination,
he reveals that

the police have
come across

a tremendous amount
of information.

All he will tell me is these
are electronic records.

It's probably,
you know,

gigabytes of data
that they have.

And again, he's not
saying what the data is.

I'm hoping to get that and
other warrant information

unsealed, but that's
not what happens.

Justice Pringle said, "No,
no, we're not releasing

that because it's too important
to the investigation."

Right now,
it's still sealed.

But I am playing
the long game.

I'm looking to lay
the groundwork

to win the next hearing.

Good morning, and

coming to Toronto Police headquarters.

Two months later,

the police make a
surprising announcement.

Today, I'd like to introduce
to you the officer in charge of

homicide squad,
Inspector Hank Idsinga.

Thank you, Victor.

The Toronto Police
had scheduled

a press conference...

on the second anniversary
of the Sherman...

bodies being discovered.

Two years ago,

on December
the 13th, 2017,

Barry and Honey Sherman
were murdered in their home.

The police investigation
has been,

and continues to be,
active and ongoing.

The work of the private
investigative team hired by

the family at the outset,
has been completed.

The lead homicide detective...

says to the media that the
private investigation of-

by the Sherman family
is over.

The Sherman family would also
like to thank the public and

the media for their
continuing support

during this difficult time.

They request that their
privacy be respected.

Accordingly, they will
not be answering

any questions
at this time.

I was really
struck by...

almost the
performance aspect

of this press conference.

The Sherman family also had
told him that they were

going to ensure that all of
the fruits of the private

investigation would be
turned over to the police.

I would encourage anyone who
has provided tips in the past

to the private investigative
team to please

resubmit those tips
directly to the police.

He said the Sherman family
and the Toronto police

were moving ahead in
lockstep on this.

There was no longer this sort
of antagonism between the

Sherman family and
the Toronto police.

We're in daily communication
with members

of the Sherman family,
and have a very good

relationship with them,
right now.

I didn't
understand the

Sherman family's U-turn.

Why this sudden end

to their private
investigation?

We're perplexed,
as neighbours...

and as friends, and as
people who knew them,

we're perplexed as,
as to why this

hasn't been coming
to a resolution,

and why we don't have
any answers yet.

The public perception of this
investigation two years in,

is that it's
going nowhere.

But what I have understood
by this point is that the

Toronto Police
consider the estate-

who got what or
who didn't get what-

from the
Sherman empire,

that's part of
their investigation.

In this time period,

I get a major piece
of information from

one of my Sherman
family sources.

I'm told that Alexandra,
Barry and Honey's daughter,

has her own theory about
who is responsible

for Honey and
Barry's death.

I wish we could
have an answer

so that everyone
could sleep

a little bit easier
at night.

And, I hope-
I still hope-

and have faith
that that will happen,

that there will be...

hopefully, an arrest
and a conviction.

I actually think that
Alexandra is talking to

the police, and she wasn't
keeping it a secret.

Beyond that,
I know

that Alexandra
was telling more than

one person
about her suspicions.

I think it's possible that
the police are building

towards something, and
they just need time

to figure out,

do they have enough
information to lay a charge?

Next time, on
Billionaire Murders...

A source of mine
told me that in 2017,

Barry had gotten into a
lot of financial trouble.

Jack Kay is saying,
"This is a money play."

A month
before she had passed,

Honey said that she was
visiting with a lawyer

to make some
amendments to her will.

If she had a will,

nobody's come
forward with it.

Based on this evidence,
we're classifying

this individual
as a suspect.

And it fits into this
whole business of this

Agatha Christie style murder
case, a real whodunit.

Everybody is
pointing fingers.

I've been trying to get to
Jonathan Sherman

for three years.

And he says, "Why don't
you come up to my place?

And come alone."

A family member had said,
"Watch your back."

I have a theory
of the case.

I have a belief that
I know who did it.

I think the police
share the same belief.
