I've been asked to fill
in for my brother Alfred,

who has been delayed.

He's been giving some lessons
in masking one's identity.

disguise, and get to work.

Granted, he has a certain
knack for impressions

and ingenious disguises,

but that was sheer
exhibitionism.

Brother Alfred is almost ready
now,

although there's hardly
any point in his appearing.

I'll now turn you over to
Alfred.

(dog barks)

He's telling you that tonight's
story

will begin in a minute,

and that one of the characters

is a strange, indescribable
four-footed monster.

But first?

(dog barks)

Mr. Ogden telephoned from the
bank.

- Dr. Babcock.

- George, what's the
matter with your mother?

- She's all tuckered out, poor
dear thing.

She was awake the whole night.

- Well there was a little
trouble at the bank.

Mother went over to meet
with Ralph and Edgar Ogden.

- Oh, your mother's been
handling

trouble at the bank for
years, so I don't see--

- What really upset her

is they seem to think
my brother's run away.

- Robbie run away?

Poppycock!

- Here they are.

You poor dear.

How do ya feel?

(birds chirping)

- Thank you for coming
so promptly, Dr. Babcock.

- Her bed's already turned down.

Now what's this nonsense
about Robbie running away?

- She spent nearly an hour
going over the evidence.

Your brother's loan

Well that just seems so
incongruous.

something wrong.

Ogden was climbing the walls

because being chief loan

Robbie had his hand in so many
records.

he just disappeared?

books, and just vanished.

- You think he just planned
it that way, to cut and run?

- Don't you?

I've just been through his
studio upstairs, Ralph,

and there are things up there

I know he'd have taken with him

if he'd planned to disappear.

That cigarette case, and
some things Father left him.

Things Robbie loved very much.

- George, if you and Robbie
were my own real sons,

or my kid brothers, or
something,

you'd know without any
explanation

that I'm as hurt and confused as
you are.

Maybe he'll come back.

Let's hope he does.

(somber music)

(knocking)

Made a nice cup of cocoa
for you, Mrs. Manson.

Nourishment is what you need
right now.

Nourishment and a good, long
sleep.

Everything looks rosier after
we've had our proper rest,

as almost any doctor will agree.

And we also sometimes prescribe
fresh air.

one of those balcony doors.

- And you take one of those
capsules with your cocoa,

and you just lie there and
sleep.

- I'll see that she does,
doctor.

There's a great deal to be done
if we're going to save Nora.

- Is she going to live, doctor?

That may mean everything,
or it may mean nothing.

The neurologist found no
evidence
of intercranial pressure.

Her heart is strong, and there
seems to be

average brain activity as such.

- But she doesn't move, she
doesn't even seem to breathe.

- Well, she is breathing.

Her involuntary processes
are working, thank god.

But she's completely
paralyzed, responds to nothing.

- How long can it last?

- There's no way of telling.

This may be brain damage due to
the fall,

or it may be emotional shock,
hysteria,

or it may be a combination of
the two.

- But if her brain is active?

- You notice I refer to
the brain, not the mind.

I don't have time to
expose the particulars,

but I'm afraid you must prepare
yourself

for the possibility that Nora

may never think normally again.

And even if she lives, she
may never be able to speak.

(ominous music)

and we'll probably be

It makes it a pretty long
evening.

who would do a thing like that.

- I can't imagine Robbie
going to all that forgery

and petty trouble for $200,000.

- Where I come from, that's
an awful lot of money, George.

- Not to Robbie.

In a year and a half, he'd
have earned his inheritance.

the police captain?
