on the previous occasion.

for Mr Luker at the bank.

And I shall cause that watch to be continued
until the last day of the month.

You believe
that Mr Luker will reclaim the diamond?

I believe that the person who pledged it to him
will force him to do so.

If the loan is not repaid, then the diamond
will become Mr Luker's property.

And you may be sure that our thief
will not allow this to happen.

You disagree, Mr Jennings?

The thief will surely know
that Mr Luker is being watched.

He will not dare to meet him openly
and reclaim the diamond.

He or she has no choice, Mr Jennings.

Unless he is present when it is handed over,
our thief will never see that diamond again.

Mr Blake, the inference is clear enough.

Mr Luker is going to take the diamond
out of the bank.

- When was the letter written?

That's not 20 minutes ago.

And I'll wager that is where my chief clerk
and office boy are. At the bank!

We may still get there in time. Come on!

I may as well finish the journey.

which, presumably,
is back in the hands of the thief.

I suspected the wrong person, last year.

I may be suspecting the wrong person now.

until you've got at the truth.

Then compare the name of the guilty person
with the name I have written.

to the sailor with the black beard.

Why didn't you tell Mr Bruff what you saw?

I hadn't time to tell anybody, sir,
the sailor went out in such a hurry.

- And you ran out after him, eh?
- Yes, sir.

You've got something in that small skull of yours
and it isn't cotton wool.

I am greatly pleased with you, so far.

And then what did the sailor do?

He twisted around and about, sir, like he didn't
want anybody to know where he was going.

- And then?
- If you please, sir, he went to the docks.

And I heard him speak to the steward
of the Rotterdam steamboat.

Rotterdam? He means to take the Moonstone
to Holland and cut it up into separate gems.

- He's our man, Sergeant.
- Leave this excellent boy to finish.

Well, the sailor wanted to go on
the steamboat right there and then, sir.

But the steward said he must wait until morning.

Then the sailor went to a tavern
and took a room.

Boy, could you find your way back

that she will never see her diamond again.

More than reconciled. After what happened
to poor Godfrey, I am glad to be rid of it.

The late Mr Ablewhite brought much
of his misfortune upon his own head.

My inquiries subsequent to the murder
have brought certain facts to light.

About Godfrey?

Mr Ablewhite was a respected barrister

and a leading light
among several worthy London charities.

He was also a man of pleasure, with a villa
in the suburbs, not taken in his own name

and with a lady, who was not taken
in his own name, either.

Godfrey?

The late Mr Ablewhite maintained this lady
for several years.

She was a person accustomed
to living extravagantly.

In his capacity as a lawyer,
Mr Ablewhite was trustee for a large estate

and had control over monies
amounting to £20,000.

Bit by bit, most of this money found its way

into the possession of the lady
with expensive tastes.

But the day of reckoning was sure to come
and when it did, it would bring ruin.

What was Godfrey Ablewhite to do?

His first idea was to propose marriage
to an heiress.

The lady rejected him.

He was desperate.

And then, you, Mr Blake,
gave the Moonstone into his very hands.

He fled to London
and, with the diamond as security,

he obtained £2,000 from Mr Luker
to pay his immediate debts,

but £18,000 had still to be found.

The terms of your mother's will, Mrs Blake,
prevented him from using you to achieve this,

however, at the end of the year,

he managed, somehow,
to redeem the Moonstone.

His plan was to take it to Amsterdam,

have it cut into smaller stones,

sell them and use the proceeds
to pay off the money he had stolen.

The moment he took the Moonstone
back into his possession, he was a dead man.

And the murderer, Sergeant Cuff?

We know that the Indians took ship for Bombay.

I sent an overland message to the police there,
but the ship arrived without them.

While the vessel lay becalmed off the Indian
coast, they stole one of the ship's boats

and, presumably, made their own way ashore.

Regular Robinson Crusoes!

So, we shall never see the Moonstone again.

I fear not, sir.

(Chanting)
