after last year's looting and burning

called for immediate, visible, tangible,

and unprecedented
social change in the hill.

This has not happened.

What the city has done
so far has come slowly.

It's not the sort of
thing that you can touch

or even see from the streets.

In the hill recovery program,

the mayor made nine rather specific,

but also cautious promises to those

who live in this neighborhood.

The city promised that 200 living units

would be purchased in
1968 for later rehabilitation.

Now it is 1969,

and the city is still trying
to decide where to buy.

75 public housing units were to be reserved

for the relocation of
hill district families.

No units have been reserved.

No definite plans have been made.

10 cent bus trips were promised

from the hill to shops in Oakland,

bloomfield, and east Liberty.

With extra service to
recreation areas in the summer.

This has not happened.

Construction was to have begun

on the hill house
neighborhood center in 1968.

Today, ownership of the land

has not been formally transferred

and the building's design is incomplete.

Beyond the promises,

the city is working on two additional

hill district improvement programs,

but as yet plans on these
projects are as yet incomplete.

So one year after the riots

and about 10 months after the promises,

that is the scorecard on the hill.

biggest stars on this show.

Chairman of the Livingston group,

born and raised in
Pittsburgh's hill district.

After starting with a small
neighborhood newspaper,

she later went national
and launched in 1970...

into their new business venture,

we are excited they chose

this hometown station
to launch it, my show.

of countless artists over the years.

You've completely transformed

the east Liberty neighborhood

as your first real estate investment.

- My son moved into real
estate. That's his thing.

When big companies move
into these neighborhoods,

there's a lot of criticism.

There's a lot of...

People get nervous about sort of

the smaller guy getting
squeezed out and suffering

from these big developments
and these neighborhoods.

When the development comes in,

I guess what I mean is, the
poor people, the black, uh...

- what are you getting at?

- For many years,

countless corporations have tried

to redevelop the hill district,

but due to a long standing city ordinance,

none were able to get
enough local signatures

from residents to move
forward with development.

Reverend Julian Kingsley,

leader of the powerful hill homes nonprofit

for the past 30 years
expresses his concern.

- We're all for redevelopment,
but we want ownership.

That's why we're all out here today

to make sure that the
voice of the hill is recognized.

- Black people, I know, are smart.

They're successful.

They're trying to find nice places to live.

And in the traditional black neighborhoods,

they bring their startups
and launch their careers.

- Speaking of startups, your granddaughter.

She has a startup out in
San Francisco, California.

- Mm-hmm.

- That new app she's doing.

- Yes, she is talented.

- Seriously, how did
you come up with the idea

to put owner's heads on pets?

- Well, it was really just a joke

A lifelong hill resident.

- I was raised in the hill.

We had a lot of community workers.

We were able to have our own shops.

In fact, the races worked well together.

And this community was awesome.

As a kid, I worked at the
center Avenue shoe store.

My grandmother used to live
down behind kirkpatrick street,

between bedford Avenue and Webster.

All of that is cleared out.

Those memories are gone.

There was a friend of mine
who owned property over there.

No one has ever been in touch with her

even to talk about that they're taking...

They just took it.

We've lost touch.

- And we have been working on

several cases with
the Pittsburgh hill, man.

Let me see, relations board.

They were living with mold in their homes.

They were living with
structural deterioration.

They were just slum.

A lot of the tenets,
they wouldn't speak up.

Because they were afraid of retaliation.

So again, please let your friends

and your families and
all your networks know.

- I am currently earning a master's degree.

I was looking for jobs.

And I just couldn't
necessarily find something

that was in my area of expertise here

that would actually pay me a wage

so I can pay back my student loans.

And we've still got a chance

votes from the community.
