are motivated

by sad situations.

I feel a lot of empathy
for those defendants.

With crimes
against children...

That is a choice
that people make.

I don't have to
feel bad for them.

The internet is really
just another playground

for offenders to hunt.

For predators
to find children.

was dedicated to

sharing child pornography
and the exploitation of young boys.

They've used the technology
to their advantage.

They watch our every move.

[Blanch] We're all there
for the same goal.

We're not going to let
the offenders win.

we're here to discuss a major international investigation

into a group of men who
gathered on the Internet

to share child pornography

and, as one participant
called, their "field of interest",

that is their sexual interest
in young boys.

[Charles Subke] I would say
that 5 % of people are just downright evil.

Franklin County
is a rural county.

Located just west
of St. Louis County.

Population approximately
a hundred thousand plus.

It has small communities.

Everybody
knows everybody else.

This is the first and
only place that I've worked in law enforcement.

Hi, my name is
Captain Charles Subke.

I'm with the Franklin County
Sheriff's Office.

[phone ringing]

I receive a phone call
from FBI.

They were looking for
a gentleman by the name of Muddyfeet.

They were working on a case
called Lost Boy.

He had done
some production himself.

And he would be
sent these videos

from different
child pornographers.

He would get rid of things
in the background that would identify these kids

or these pedophiles.

Then they would be shared

on this Lost Boy's network.

[Catherine Connell]
I had never been involved in a case

of that magnitude of subjects
that were being arrested.

The victims that
we were going to identify.

Here were all of these
individuals on a message board.

We were reading
what they were saying.

But it was hard to say
"is this true or not?"

The first that comes
to mind when I think about Lost Boy is,

it was true.

What you think just couldn't
be real or happening to these kids, was happening.

This case is probably
one of the top ones that I've investigated.

It's part of my memory.

Memories of investigating,
paperwork, interviews...

That kid.

From Los Angeles,
it was spiraling out

into different parts
of the United States.

It just so happened
that one of them was here in Franklin County.

The alias of Muddyfeet

came back to a person in
the Sullivan, Missouri area.

They had given me
two addresses.

I went to the first address.

The apartment there was empty.

He left a forwarding address
to an address in Miramagua.

I need to remember where
the heck this place was.

'Cause it's been a while
since I've been out here.

The first thing that I noticed
was a sticker on the door.

It was of Scooby-Doo.

[Blanch] One of the things
you learn quickly as a child-pornography prosecutor

is that there are
certain images of children

that are collected.

And you can sometimes
watch children grow up

in their
child pornography images.

You could see from watching
how the men behaved,

how important these
series of child pornography were to them.

They'd talk about series
like someone would talk about baseball cards.

Can someone post images
of this child or that child?"

There were a couple of series

that these men were very
particularly interested in.

One of them was
the series referred to as the Scooby series.

These photos
were taken by, um,

one of the detectives
on the scene.

Scooby-Doo on the front door.

There was suspects
who had been interviewed.

They had mentioned
that Muddyfeet

was using
the animation of Scooby-Doo

to animate over the,

um,

photos or anything
in the background

that may identify the victim

or the suspect or the location
of where this video was being taken.

[Blanch] We didn't know
who those kids were

or who was producing
those pictures.

But we knew we were seeing
new pictures show up.

We knew those kids
were still in danger and they were still being...

molested.

So we had received a photo
from Los Angeles

of an unidentified child.

Before we could do
a search warrant on the residence,

we needed some probable cause
to execute a search warrant.

To do that the interview
of the child was important.

Find evidence
about who that child was,

who was harming him,
and make sure that he was safe.

[Subke] I saw a couple
vehicles in the driveway.

I got the license plates
from those vehicles,

and then ran them
through our system.

That came back
to Jeffrey Greenwell.

We had no idea
who this kid was.

We didn't even know
if he was from the area.

Like a needle in a haystack.

We went to different schools
within Sullivan.

He was identified
by a principal, yes.

We went to the mom.
Like any mother, she was devastated.

Then we had a forensic
interviewer interview the kid.

[Connell] You know, what is
the evidence we have?

What would be helpful
for the victim to say, "Yes,

this happened to me."

Or help them be able
to talk about what it was that went on.

The images
also give them the ability

to tell us
so much more sometimes,

that happened in that image
and in that room than we ever even knew about.

We got a little more history
to what was this connection

between Jeffrey Greenwell
and her child.

He actually identified
Greenwell's hand

within those photos
that we showed.

We knew that we had
located Muddyfeet.

From information
we got from Los Angeles,

there were suspects

that had devices on their
computers that would clean their hard drives

if they saw
law enforcement coming.

We had the mother
call Jeffrey,

have him leave the residence.

We had deputies at
the entrance to Miramagua.

They had done
a traffic stop on him. When they arrested him,

they brought him here
to the sheriff's office.

[clears throat]

When I walked in,
looked to the left, there was a living room.

In the living room was
a laptop computer and it was open.

In the corner
of the dining room area

was a dog cage,

and there was
a puppy in there.

We saw the remnants
of pillow cases that had

the character of Scooby-Doo.

When we started looking at
Jeffrey Greenwell and the kids that he had groomed for this,

we realized
that we were actually

investigating a true predator.

What he would do is
he would get onto dating sites

and he would find single women

with kids between the ages
of eight and thirteen.

And these were single moms
that had to work.

They didn't have free time,
but Jeffrey Greenwell I think knew that.

Jeffrey would befriend them

and tell them: "Hey, if you
got to go somewhere,

I'll watch your kid."

That's where he would
start that grooming process

of getting these kids to
do what he wanted to do.

Just because we got him,

I knew that it was not
the end of this investigation.

So as far as putting
Muddyfeet away

for a hundred plus years...

There is somebody else
that just took his place.

[journalist]
As far as right now, I saw some court documents

state that the
defense attorneys for some of these gentlemen

were critical of you guys
holding this press conference today.

Well, look. I think it is
important for the public to know

the type of work that
law enforcement is doing to combat this serious issue.

As a result of
this investigation,

authorities have discovered
individuals who abuse children,

make their own
child pornography

and share their
disturbing product throughout the internet.

the curtain is what we discovered in Lost Boy.

We had one individual
in Norway.

Thousands and thousands
of miles away from Los Angeles, California,

who shared information that
literally impacted the world.
