(Jerry sighs)

- [Clyde] Mr. McMinnimee wants
to know if he's got any mail.

- [Jerry] Mr. McMinnimee
hasn't had a letter in years.

- Oh (sighs), the dog at
the dump's got me worried.

- Yeah, what kind of a dog is it?

- Just a mixed breed mongrel.

- There's no use goin' out now,

The one today at the dump
though, he scared me.

- [Clyde] We're all loners,

who else would wanna live here all year?

- [Harry] Pretty isolated

with the ferry coming only once a week.

- Even less than the off season.

But we're here by choice.

I'm a widower, same as Jerry Preston.

Jerry's got a 10 year old,

couple years older than Millie's boy.

Millie's divorced.

- I'm not a widower and I'm not divorced.

I'm a fella that didn't make

the same mistake once (laughing).

- This Jerry fellow, he's a weird one.

He looks like he could take on the world,

but he's stuck himself out here.

- Jerry's been about everywhere
and done about everything.

He was with the Alaska Fish
and Game for a few years,

Then he tied up with our Fish and Game

and they sent him over here
for two years to study shrimp.

- To study shrimp?

- Well, I know it sounds kinda funny

and I did a bit of
laughin' about it myself

when I first heard about it,

but if you like a shrimp
cocktail every once

in awhile it gets kinda important.

Helpin' to save 'em from
dying out is what I mean.

- He's a marine biologist.

- That's his schoolin', Ma'am.

- His two years about up?

- Almost, but he got to
kinda likin' it here.

And he met Millie.

Millie's been bringin' her boy up here

for summer vacations
the past couple years.

This year they decided not to go back.

Jerry's buildin' a house for
the two of 'em, and the boys.

He's gonna stay whether the
state job gives out or not.

(Millie exclaiming)

- [Millie] Whew!

- Come on in.

Whew!

That's a hell of a wind, huh?

Rain's lit up, though.

Took Millie and the boys home,

found these two walkin' down the road.

- Oh, I was just takin' the fellas home.

I'll take 'em all home together.

- All right.

- Anything on the dog?

- What dog?

- Oh, that's why I came by.

He's just a stray.

I'll take care of him in the morning.

But if you're goin' fishin',

I wouldn't go out alone until
I figure this thing out.

And you shouldn't go
walkin' at night either.

- Can't be that much, Tommy.

- Then why are these
guys talkin' about it?

- It's just a precaution,

a dog like that's unpredictable.

- I remember readin' about an old lady,

had a doberman for years.

Suddenly one day, it tore
her to bits just like that.

- Well, what is this dog, a doberman?

- No, he's mixed, he's just a mongrel.

- Tommy, help Marge get that
stuff out of the car, okay?

It's back there in the store.

- Okay.

- Come with me, gentlemen.

- See you all tomorrow.

I think I'll have a quick one.

- I'll get ya a glass.

Well, he read for an hour,
then he started to talk.

And people think they're so civilized.

- You could have stopped all the talking.

I mean, he just sat and talked.

He didn't even try to grab a tit.

It was kinda nice.

- So then we decided to take a walk.

We've been walking for two hours.

He can tell you the names
of every bird ever made,

even in the dark.

(foreboding music)

I gotta find some food first.

Just gonna put that on the bureau,

but it's gone from there, damn it.
