hey everybody in this video i want to

show you a little trick how to create

melodies with two voices

most people either play monophonic

melodies where only one note is used at

the same time or they play chords which

consist of at least three notes

but exactly in between are melodies

where you play two notes at the same

time

such melodies have their own

characteristics many people associate

them with caribbean and tropical flair

especially if you play them on

instruments like a marimba or viper

phone here's an example where i use this

technique in a melodic techno track

first i'll play the section with all the

instruments and then i'll show you the

marimba

for this example i used the software

sundock song studio

in the new version 3.9 i added a new

feature that allows you to create two

voice melodies

sonic is a standalone midi sequencer

that allows you to compose harmonic

songs very quickly

sonic is connected to ableton live via

midi so all the sounds come from ableton

in sunlock i first created a chord

progression it sounds like this

for most instruments i now just play on

the chord notes for this i click on

follow the chord notes and sunlock sets

the source mode to chord notes

and now i can enter a pattern down here

which plays on the chord notes for

example the bass plays a simple off-beat

rhythm

in this synth place an arpeggio that

plays on the first second and third

chord notes

but now let's move on to the marimba

again we set the source mode to chord

notes and we create a simple little

rhythm

so far we've only ever played on the

base note of the chord so this is

monophonic melody

now we want to make it a polyphonic

melody with two notes at the same time

to do this we click on the small bar

above the zero we now see the step

effect view here we can unlock

additional effects for each step which

then occur with a certain probability

we drag the probability of add extranode

to 100

and then we set the effect to plus two

this effect says that another node

should be played in addition to the

normal node

so the zero down here is our main node

and another node is triggered that is

two chord nodes above it

it sounds like this

i now press copy and paste the effect to

other steps as well

i use different values every now and

then so that a small melody can develop

and now it sounds like this

by the way you can also export the midi

data to the door via drag and drop at

any time

a few more tips most melodies sound good

when the rhythm is right in most cases

the notes should not be played on the

beat but in between

this makes the melody sound more groovy

you can use the same trick not only in

sundock but also in chord potion

called potion is the midi effect plugin

that you can use directly in your door

and which can convert any chords into

melodies
