Thanks I'm so good to see so many people

here in glee blissfully and I'm one of

the local counselors here my name's

Chris piece and I know a lot of you here

so and it's really good to see people

from the valley from a little bit

further beyond and some people from a

long way beyond and we've got Jeremy

here who's come to join us today and and

I know that there's so many things that

we're all united in knowing is wrong

with our society and that's the reason

that we're here to share our concerns

and to find that common ground and to

look at how we go forward to making

things better and gentleman at the back

yes yes hi Jeremy my name is Dave and

I'm chair an organization called

disability labor which is basically

disabled members of the Labour Party and

because of the support you've given

disabled people and other minorities in

society we have nominated you for later

the Labour Party you will be aware that

the plight of disabled people in society

since this government and the previous

one

the previously condemned government

given has been quite appalling that

they've had benefit cuts that there's

been an increase in disability here

crime could you give us a brief a vision

of how you see the lives of disabled

people under a Labour government with

you as liberal Minister one is to

restore the cuts in the benefits that

have taken place two is to guarantee the

personal independence payment system

which I know the government tried to

remove in the budget in April and then

retreated on it a few days later at

nevertheless the the threat of taking

away and it amounts to four billion

pounds in expenditure is huge and could

come back in the Autumn Statement

thirdly is completely changing the whole

mentality around in surrounding the

capability of a work test into one where

people with disabilities want to work

the employer if they take them on should

be supported in taking them on with a

depth a

if necessary but also send the message

out there that any of us may be disabled

now or could very easily become disabled

we could cross that road get knocked

over and suddenly we've lost the use of

a legs or or whatever else and we're

then going to suddenly realize how life

changes and how a society that actually

includes everybody could be very very

different from society we've got at the

present time so it's a it's an attitude

in the psyche and mentality of all of us

we've got to change as well just as much

as we have to change it in respect of

mental health and mental health issues

or something I also feel very very

strongly and very very passionately

about and lady here sorry I am so I'm a

counselor and I've been having to try

and help single men who have been made

unemployed or they've been off sick due

to accidents and they've had the the

sick pay stopped they're in desperate

need and then they go for the interviews

to see if they can get it employment

supports and it so they can't get it and

they're in the right State and I've

pointed them towards some assistance

places and as you say it's they've been

taken to a tribunal and usually they've

won the case but it's so humiliating and

degrading to have to go through that and

we don't want need that type of system

that we need a better system yeah and I

mean at the moment it's like the carers

allowance it's still hovering around 60

pounds a week for a full-time job I

myself am a parent carer and we fear

every year that the rest I will be

caught and you're no fault of your the

local council but because of of the

course and that will just be a disaster

will be a tragedy and it will lead to a

lot of families going into the social

services system it really aids on the

carers and carers allowance it's

insufficient it was a big campaign to

get any kind of carers of outs in the

first place and having achieved that it

should be upgraded and up rated with

them

it's insufficient the need for respite

care and respite care facilities is very

very important so that both get a break

the the person who's cared for as well

as the carer is very important if we

didn't have carers what would actually

be the case either those with severe

multiple disabilities would be taken in

to some form of care at very great cost

with very inadequate care often provide

as we have in the past before the

concept of Independent Living came in

and so there are kind of underrated

under recognized and undervalued massive

resource for all of us and should be

respected for what they do I understand

that we do need to look at trying to

raise standards of living for people

that are carers people with disabilities

and everything else what I also want to

link into that is the prevention side of

that because what I'm I'm a trade union

rep and a lot of the cases I deal with

are people dealing with stress at work

and it is actually stress work-related

stress and trying to get employers to

recognize that and actually do something

about it even the HSE don't always

recognize it if we do act we encourage

people to accident and instant

performance because actually it is that

it's something that the employer needs

to take responsibility for I have a

member at the moment he's he was

witnessed to her suicide where the train

hit somewhere he suffered with PTSD the

company is just allowed him to go on and

on and on we've been trying to gain Hill

health retirement and they go into

panels and panels and panels and you

know this place is if the company don't

want to understand his need I mean

recently I was working with a young

woman who have been a sanction she's 19

years old and she's homeless and she

phoned me up in in a flood of tears and

we was able to help her and and I'm

hoping I'm not seeing it for a couple

weeks but she had an integral evolve and

she's got a job and you sorted out with

the house things so there's that all

raft of stuff for young people it's them

you know they can be affected by all

sorts of things you've totally talked

about some of them

it might be illness in the family a

family breaks up and in fact they find

themselves in a situation that they

probably never never dreamed up I myself

am 62 year old well last year I was

sanctioned for 13 weeks because I didn't

accept a job a place I never had any

interview at the DWP are making these

things up and functioning people 13

weeks they expected me to go out and at

the time again any advice from anyone so

I took it upon myself I went to the

place where they said that I'd have the

job interview

they've got no record of me I then got a

letter from them to take it back there

to the Job Center who eventually back

down and decided that I could be paid

but then I also got told by this lady at

the Job Center every adviser has got to

a sanction at least five people per week

can I bring you in on that yeah I did

want to touch on that because people

don't I don't a lot of people don't

actually know when we talk about

sanctions that people being sanctioned

for weeks and months and years roll in

and you get a lecture about a month

later with absolutely nothing but you

know people starve to death than the

food

last night I was trying to save a guy's

life because it was it was suicidal

today I managed to get in the help that

he needs

now it is about class the poor poor of

this country are not giving any

opportunities in this country at all

anymore we used to have I remember being

able to go to college do you about going

to university slip in a job step out of

a job that isn't a plan anymore

being poor makes you depressed you makes

you malnourished malnutrition doesn't

mean to starving it means you're eating

the wrong type of food and what got into

the press the other day is that the fact

the figures the malnutrition figures ads

are one of the highest on the the points

that were made yourself about

sanctioning and attitudes well I'm

absolutely fed up with the way in which

a lot of our papers have fallen into the

thing about

stay in bed Britain's scrounger Britain

they are all scroungers dossers etc etc

etc well sorry people don't actually

choose to be poor they don't choose to

live in that sort of way for the very

large majority they want some kind of

respect and decency within their lives

and before last summer our party it

unfortunately often indulged in this

whole activity and used some pretty bad

language and we were invited to abstain

on the welfare reform bill just over a

year ago on the basis that the Tories

had won the general election and

therefore we had to accept the majority

of the population we're actually against

people receiving welfare well the two

things don't arithmetic me add up never

never mind the morals behind it and so

we have as you've probably noticed since

then completely changed our approach and

I'm absolutely determined we're going to

carry on with a changed approach about

social security in Britain

my name is save Parliament local

businessmen my question is about

European Union so we have made decision

to go out of European Union just shortly

and British Pound is getting weaker

every day is melted by 25% so we do not

know where we send them if we go in out

of the European Union if we were

continuing so it is unknown moment like

to ask about if you were a prime

minister which we open what would you do

going to stay like that or going out

what will be the benefit on the

businesses because at the moment we have

got the problem with that it wasn't a

result I wanted I wanted us to remain

and reform the European Union I didn't

think it was perfect but I wanted it

reformed particularly the sort of

free-market instincts that there were so

many in the European Union

however we will give the result we've

got we have to urgently agree on a

number of things one we retain consumer

protection environmental protection

workers protection rights that we've

gained through European regulation we

have to maintain the market access to

Europe

for British manufactured goods and

British financial services into the

European Union and we have to have a

sensible good trading relationship with

the European Union because we're going

to be the neighbours of it whatever

relationship is so I've set up a meeting

with the Norwegian Labour Party to look

at the Norwegian model where they're not

members the European Union but they act

very closely with the European Union

we're still members of the Council of

Europe we're still members of the

Organization for Security and

Cooperation in Europe there has to be a

continuing relationship with the

European Union trade treaties at the

moment are all done through the European

Union we could make our own trade

treaties but I'm absolutely clear I'm

not going to sign up to transatlantic

trade and investment partnership and

what goes with that but I do I do

recognize we've either got to do trading

via the European Union or set up our own

trade treaties we have to recognize the

result work with that result and protect

the best we got from being in the

European Union and develop ourselves

into an efficient investment strong

manufacturing economy in Britain with a

lowest level of investment in

manufacturing infrastructure and

everything else of any other country

what some of the Tories want is us to

become a low tax low wage

bargain-basement economy on the shores

of Europe I want us to be a place of

investment of growth of sustainability

and opportunity for all of our young

people with a good relationship with our

neighbors across the channel right so

that was pretty clear it'll be a prison

is very clear that the thing that I

always think about example Council for

latest I I always think that this estate

was built for a city that was have

centuries of manufacturing and industry

and we've had that being art taken out

of this city and the people to get from

those to have full employment again is

bang-on what Jeremy said we need

investment in manufacturing we need to

bring back industry that's the way to

get more people into work because the

industry down there what people want out

that's the main thing you know that we

should be looking at now he's not just

industry and growth for growth's sake we

should be talking about a green new deal

we all have read the papers in the last

few days we will have noticed that July

is the hottest month in earth and yet

nobody seems to be bothered about that

we've talked it as the started of this

talking about what what sort of UT do we

want for our days and that you know wait

everybody butyl if that's how it is the

way things that we now the Tories of

relegated climate change to their - I

don't know the 500 priority of change

manator think they're not bothered about

the climate change act and so we've got

to a position now that with labour party

there'll be lots of jobs in it for lots

of people all the energy efficiency that

needs to do for all these hours of the

year the refuge Sheffield the rest of

the country plenty away from lots of

fall and it's not soon to work for you

know your adequate to universities

workforce to ordinary working-class folk

and these plenty to be done can I give

you an example of how we can move that

forward and thanks for your point I was

in a couple weeks ago in Swansea talking

to a group of cancers there who've

managed to get the funding together for

Swansea to build by direct labour a new

housing estate all houses to passive

house standards so what are they

achieving good housing affordable social

rent lifetime tenancy passive house

standards their folders zero or

negligible energy costs for the tenants

moving in to those properties and

obviously protection of the environment

as a whole we've got to change our

attitude towards the environment and

towards energy there is a great many

jobs can be created by sustainable

agriculture sustainable manufacturing

which actually has some regard for the

environment I think with the environment

not against the environment I'm a

mentality who works

what the gentleman said before about

reinvesting in our manufacturing base

that's what we need to do we don't want

to be a low-wage Zilla wala contract

bargain-basement offshore we need to

rebuild what made cities like Sheffield

Middlesbrough and Newcastle and Leeds

great rebuild our manufacturing allows

young monster as well green

manufacturing as well now I'm a youth

worker I've been a youth worker in

Sheffield for nearly 50 years

one of the things that really upsets me

now is that when you look at the

services for young people it's all about

their future that's fine but if you

screw up their present they don't have a

future and one of the things that Youth

Work does is to work with young people

now and it's so youth it's a

relationship with with our dolts that's

without sanction at the moment it's been

stripped out of the system and then we

wonder why we have things like young

people in crisis young people who were

homeless I mean I want to just build on

that ask you about education and

aspiration because I think it's

systematically being crushed and sadly

it was started by our party with the

introduction of student fees my dad came

to this country when he was about 12 you

worked in the steel works I went to a

local comprehensive as did my sisters we

were very lucky to benefit from free

education my sister got a first class

honours in chemistry and a PhD and I

qualified as a barrister I still live in

the area that I grew up which is Tinsley

which is apart of the East End of

Sheffield and we would not be in the

positions that we are were it not for

the opportunities that were given to us

and also the fact that we could dream

and those dreams seemed attainable now

they are systematically being crushed

what was your debt when you left

University I was very very lucky because

there was times I survived on 10 pounds

a week I my maintenance grant was just

enough to cover my rent I actually came

out of a university with no debt but

that was because I had a father who came

to this country with virtually nothing

making sure that I did things properly

but now you know as a professional I

look at my two children

and and I can't imagine that I can give

them the help that my father gave me

they're going to come out with 40,000

pounds if they're lucky of death which

is enough we used to be enough to buy a

house here if I had not had the benefit

of free education if I'd not have the

support if my dreams hadn't been

encouraged I wouldn't be doing the job I

do now and there's so many people I meet

in areas like this areas like Tinsley

I'm a see so much talent in them they

have so much ability but you just think

I can't go to University and what's

happening now is that forget about

attacks on students dreams are being

crushed people say you're not a leader

you've inspired me it made me join make

my wife join my children support you my

daughter thinks you're obi-wan Kenobi by

the way although I do joke with it if

you watch any films you know when it's

really bad you need a mature man with a

white beard coming home but you know you

you have inspired as you've moved us

because if people think a leader is

something that Blair was or Cameron was

that's synthetic it's Hollow

a leader is somebody that can move

people can motivate people and that's

what you've done and then the thing that

I like about you that I the oh and I

don't think even comes close to bring it

to the table I'm a firm believer you

have your principles and our job is to

convince people to move towards us if

their dog

we don't change our principle we work

hard at what we shouldn't become which

is what I think labor became was a vet

weathervane forever spinning trying to

find the prevailing wind to get people

to vote for us no I think the reason why

hundreds of thousands of people have

come because in you they see hope they

see what really Labour was what I grew

up seeing what Labour was myself when I

was in sixth form I was so passionate to

go to uni I finished my first day of une

now and I'm thinking is there something

else I could do because I don't think I

could continue with university because

literally not like when I finished

University I don't think it's so hard

for me to even think of getting a job

because when I come out you know the

stuff that I need to pay for it just

crazy one of my siblings she got a first

class degree and then she got thirsty a

first class degree and until now she

still hasn't been able to get a job

until now she's been struggling she

works so hard day and night just so then

she can get a job and she studied

biomedical science and there's no

opportunity for I'm student engineer and

I think I don't even think I have

opportunity because I was going on my

sister my sister's in for a master's to

study in pharmacy and she doesn't even

think I would speak to her yesterday she

doesn't even think she's gonna succeed

because she's working two part-time jobs

so then she can live so then she can

live on our study we're literally

struggling everyone I speak to students

then literally they're struggling no one

know us I spoke to so many students

because I'm part of my Students Union

and I speak to so many students like a

younger there are 16 17 or 18 and

literally they have so much talent but

literally they can't afford it their

parents are struggling and literally we

reach the gala parents like supporting

the same go to universities so then you

can you can be in a better situation

than us distribute so much and us at

like a few months ago in May I sat down

with one of uni lecturers because I was

running for position within the Union

and I was doing research about the BMI

attainment gap so many people are

leaving universe

because they literally stood within the

first three months not the first

literally I was having depression my

first three months I was literally

struggling so much University I don't

know what's going on like if I was going

to continue so many of my friends

there's so much passion they were clever

and they dropped out within the first

three months if you shatter people's

dreams if you break their backs before

they get a chance to qualify to achieve

things like this young brother wants to

and then you try to make out some kind

of meritocracy isn't and also debt it

what it does it makes you risk-averse

when all you've got is a tenner you

become risk-averse or when you've got 40

grands worth of debt you don't want to

take chances and what you don't have

time to do is be to be a critical

thinker to hold government to account

because all you're doing is running in

the wheel trying to pay off your debts

we need to bring up our children to

understand each other to work with each

other obviously to make the best of

their own lives but also to understand

where what we have has come from and how

it was achieved our kids are not brought

up to understand that they brought up to

believe that somehow or other one day

Parliament's would be a really good idea

to have a National Health Service let's

do it they didn't say the struggles that

went on for decades for the principle

behind it likewise the principle of

comprehensive education as opposed to

selective and more elitist education I

don't require every young person to go

to university any more than I require

every young person to get a good-quality

apprenticeship but I do require a

society that gives every young person an

opportunity to get apprenticeship or go

to university so that the the

opportunity is there and not be saddled

with the debt at the end of it what

we've done is turned education into a

commodity for under fives and a

commodity for over 18 we've had 30 years

of being told that neoliberal economics

is they got the only answer to

everything no it doesn't it's a question

of expanding community involvement

empowering communities great people

don't go off and achieve things on their

own

ordinary people achieve things because

all of us come together to make sure

that we all benefit from it

when you bring people together you

achieve things when you divide people we

all lose surely the great strength we've

got in the labour party is that we have

this massive membership now half a

million people they can be that

community campaigning pressure in our

community that can be a force for so

much good I think it'll be a long time

before the Daily Mail The Daily Express

or the Evening Standard or The Telegraph

or any of those papers even begin to

understand what community politics in

community force is about but they'll

understand it when we show that strength

of unity that can bring about the

changes in the mentality and attitudes

in our society which can bring about

real justice for everybody it's very

much fun that's what you stand for and

that's why they trying to destroy you

and what you stand for they understand

it don't worry about it it's only Jeremy

this talk about workers rights and

actually meaning it if we need a more

equal society we need better workers

rights and get rid of this anti trade

union law that's just been affecting its

cooperation not competition and the

fundamental difference is in this

leadership campaign is same old status

quo versus proper change proper progress

if you want hope you've got one choice

thank you thank you thank you very much

we've done well today the rain has

stopped the Sun has come out what's

better than one

and it looks to me even more people here

tonight than the were in the leadership

campaign rally we held here a year ago

thank you all of you very much for

coming along here tonight we need to

stand up together or do people need to

stand together and try and work together

to make change in our society the rich

are standing together the rich managed

to go out and vote for the Tories and

make sure they protect their interests

and we need to start signing up for our

interests our biggest problem was that

there wasn't a clear enough alternative

being put by us to the people of this

country we were also accepting the

argument that the banking crisis of 2008

9 somehow other had to be paid for by

cutting the services that are necessary

for the majority of people in this

country but accepting that the very

buzzy and Nora tea would continue to be

very wealthy and indeed become even

wealthier as a result of the tax system

that we've got less than two weeks and

I've joined Labour Party because of

Jeremy Corbyn reason being I'm 19 I'm a

student I'm a Muslim and being me and I

believe that Jeremy Corbyn and his

campaign will tackle this issue it is

the function of government to reach out

to everybody in our society it is the

function of government to set up a

national investment bank 500 billion

parents being made available for

investment all over the country in

crucial infrastructure but also housing

and also being prepared to invest in

manufacturing industry so those

high-tech developments those high-tech

discoveries those good-quality

sustainable jobs are supported by a

public investment which will improve the

living standards

and indeed the tax income of government

of everybody in the future rather than

the few it's about public investment on

a public realm majority in this country

they are not and we need the poor to get

a fair deal these it and this is why I

need Liberian power again I want the

Labour Party to be there for those

people who didn't vote last time and to

educate those to come over to this style

of politics what Jamie's campaign has

done is open the door to a new tide of a

vibrant democracy it's led by young

people that can give them a voice and

can give them a giver as a hope for real

political engagement in the future as I

joined the Labour Party become for you

and I'll be campaigning for you thank

you very much all righty thank you hi

how you know really good to see ya of

course coach can I see them up yet and

all of that you've got my support all of

us and thanks for what you said I really

don't know you deserve it mm-hmm thank

you met all of our you sir okay take

care you'll find out it sure thank you

thanks for the delivery commonly called

the liver room last week before we know

what he kept a like seven pound per hour

plus one pound by delivery but since

last week they change the pay structure

they are not going to pay hourly rate

they're going to change it for 3 pounds

zombified by delivery so the drivers who

ever worked for the liberal what

happened is they end up going to get

hourly pay like I said the wedding two

hours outside for the delivery and they

got only one delivery in two hours they

are getting paid only 3075 for two hours

I suppose we would fall into the

category of the working poor and we've

we've been on 13 strikes in 2014 to try

and achieve the de London living wage

it's connected with the delivered what

the delivery routes a worker said and I

work at a Women's Centre and we work

with women of color immigrant women who

were over-represented in no wage work

caring

health care zero many and zero hour

contracts and we see directly the effect

that low wages have on women and that

combines with the cuts in benefit

because first first of all they cut

asylum-seekers money down to almost

nothing and that's been extended to

millions of others and benefits are like

our safety net work and we would very

much support and and call for others to

support delivery you know we need all of

us to go up together not just women in

Parliament but also grassroots women to

go up as well

I am a nurse and our pay has been

attacked since 2010 we've lost 15% of

our pay now we've got another three

years of papers strength coming up and

nurses are leaving the health care

service in their droves we have nurses

accessing food banks the amount of

colleagues that I have telling me that

accessing food banks is disgusting we

have nurses that there was a study in

the winter that can't afford to heat the

home they can't afford to put food on

the table for their children they're

working like 80 hour weeks just to be

able to have be able to afford to pay

their rent in London and nursing is in

such a bad state

and they also downtrodden for years and

years and years it really really

concerns me about what's going to happen

because I don't know if there will be

any fight back and as it stands nursing

really hangs in the balance

our whole profession is in tatters so

it's not not so good I'm a doctor and we

were totally numb bastard in a lot of

the press without any of our concerns

being relayed to the public at all they

they lied quite frankly about what the

real issues were and painted us as I'm

sure they will with you as being you

know greedy and selfish and demanding

things beyond your value when it's just

not the case and it's just very a very

concerning change in the culture whereby

the voice of the workers is being

totally

and it's only really through union

action that we have seen some of the

most progressive changes in working

rights in history gender equality racial

equality in the workplace and I just

think it's a very very alarming state of

affairs thank you something to mention

that for me for me personally so within

the BMA and one of the most valuable

lessons that we learn and one the most

uplifting things was the opportunity to

build links with other unions so it was

about it was about us you know working

with the hospital cleaners who were also

on strike with the UT with the teachers

and unity who are also striking with the

the NHS student bursaries campaigns it

was really about building those sorts of

links across the board that that's

really what then meant that we were able

to to bring the government back to the

negotiating table but yeah I was an

awful lot to say about that whole thank

you a former local government employee

and whether for 25 years but previous to

that I worked in private industry so I

kind of knew the difference and 25 years

ago it was wonderful to work in local

government you had good trade unions

good equal opportunities local people

employed especially women black women

were working-class and I've seen it seen

it disintegrate and where I've left it

now it's micro managed the trade unions

have been decimated it's really hard

struggle and it's just so sad to see it

all the equal opportunities I see a just

getting weaker weaker well it simply

it's across all industries I does the

public sector private sector was seen

out as well

you know there's been paid freezes

across the private sector for years and

in the steel industry in particular we

haven't had pay raises for the last

three four years and for some of our

people within the industry of actually

our pay cuts because of the way that

we've restructured and suchlike it seems

to be an attack on the working person

all the way through and it knocks on to

your communities as well fit in the

steel industry reticular we got all this

uncertainty at the moment you know we

got people be then in our industry who

want to move

wanted to get mortgages but a mortgage

company will not touch anybody at the

moment it works with data because of the

uncertainty because we've got the zero

hour contracts now which are and really

blackmailing and peace people because if

if you're an agency worker you're not

you know if you say I can turn up for

work today

you know you blackmailed and you're

saying if you don't turn up today then

we're not going to give you any work the

conditions are very bad they don't have

work-life balance and it's really bad

that and these are allowed to carry on

and something really needs to be done

because people are being exploited thank

you and gentleman at the back in the red

yeah hi I work for ISS and I'm a union

rep as well and at the moment in our

hospital we are facing reorganization by

a private contractor and effects it has

on the workers in terms of the reduction

in ours reduction in wages and all

aspects of their shift work is being

decimated and the government is not

doing anything to support the working

person within the workplace in terms of

protection the unions can do as much as

they can but if their power is limited

in terms of how much they do for the

people they are not effective they are

ineffective at the moment we are facing

cuts in all the services which is going

to impact on the local community the

workers the hospital standards as well

but in 10 you know we actually need

somebody to speak up for us yeah I just

wanted to make a point about unions I

was recently made redundant my

organization didn't recognize unions so

it was a difficult process for me to be

made redundant from a job and NACA

confidence but also really faced the

fact that I couldn't afford an

employment tribunal and was also warned

various people in and around the

organization that if I had took them to

neeti I've had the grounds to do so it

would cause me some harm for my future

career

the other thing really I was told that

it could take months of my energy and

time and just eat me up as an individual

at the same time looking for new work

and looking after my family that it

could be really detrimental to go

through that whole process thank you the

way that that's kind of what I wanted to

talk about is this huge increase in

management bullying for those staff that

in my lighter I've seen that rising

honestly and not just in in the private

sector but in the public sector and no

schoolteachers were and an often

concomitant with that is you've got

people at the top who paid astronomical

salaries and it's in their vested

interest to be bullies and I really do

think that needs to be addressed and we

need some representation of staff in

workplaces oh yeah I think there's a

there's another section of erican class

in the public sector it's very often

forgotten about in all this and it's the

Armed Forces and they're subjected to

housing crisis at the moment and their

pay is frozen I believe and they're

subject to redundancies and stuff like

that and they have no unions they have

no unions or they've got to rely on is

the mo D and so the odds aren't good as

a former soldier the mo D's in that

trustworthy so I mean where where'd you

go with them and I think this could be a

strong hand for you Jeremy because as we

know the veteran vote was very important

after 45 that settlement that you know

these are people they do have votes and

they have very little protection and

they also have mental health issues is a

big thing in the military as well but

I'm it's a difficult one to deal with I

know but I'll be interested to hear when

people think about this kind of hidden

section of working people who are out

there and veterans as well once you've

left the services yeah thank you

fundamental to everything we've been

discussing this morning is about rights

of representation and rights to have

some effect on our own environment so in

opposition what we've done now is set up

workplace to

20 which is fundamentally about

fulfilling basic international labour

organization convention rights giving

automatic rights of trade union

representation whether the union is

recognized in your workplace or not your

right to say I'm a member of unite I'm a

member of unison every union it is I

demand to be represented by that person

counsel employment tribunal fees and the

cost that can be awarded against them

it's a right to justice for all of us

those things are basically important but

it's also looking at exploitation in

lots of ways so zeros contracts are part

of it the deliver rule example sport

direct with and having forced to pay a

million pounds back now in unpaid unpaid

minimum pay wages so is about forcing

changes which have only come where

there's been a union involvement sport

direct was only because you know I took

up the case delivery because he got

together in a union and made some some

progress I realize you know a long way

off what you're trying to achieve but

you have made a lot of progress and

people begin to understand it but it's

also about representation of

self-employed workers there are several

million people in Britain working a

self-employed people some of them are

kind of doing all right many are

actually as badly exploited as people in

work you know whether the company that

they've done work for simply refuses to

pay them and they said what you're going

to do about it the points that are made

about the steel industry fundamentally

if we could have a manufacturing economy

in Britain you've got to have a steel

industry steel is fundamental to

everything it's fundamental to transport

it's fundamental to construction it's

fundamental in every way in our society

nothing happens without still being

involved in some way or the other this

building wouldn't exist without steel

girls that hold it up and so on and so

on you know you know all of that so the

future Port Talbot is being decided by

essentially commercial negotiations

between two global corporations

going to decide whether it's tartar or

somebody else that runs the company the

missing element in this was the UK

government until the steel workers made

enough fuss about it there is some

degree of involvement there has to be

either complete or an element of public

ownership in the industry there has to

be an industrial strategy there has to

be a national investment bank

sufficiently funded to invest in

infrastructure across the country roads

railways particularly railways broadband

digital and housing but also being

prepared to invest in new products and

new industries how many great inventions

were made in this country where hedge

funds buy them up and sell them to

somewhere else abroad or how many cases

where there's a small company doing

quite well developing new products maybe

a good employer cooperative what else

cannot access bank capital despite the

fact that we have generously given the

bank's three hundred and eighty billion

pounds in quantitative easing

we're very generous people and they are

not prepared to invest in those

industrial products so what I want is a

national investment bank which will be

prepared to invest in new industries and

development this all sounds incredibly

revolutionary left-wing only in a

context we've had 30 years of lectures

of neoliberal economics if this was a

similar meeting in any German State

people and say well we do all that

already we're going to just go back to

our topic out the way that we want to

cover that we haven't got to you and

we've already talked about how it links

you know the question of the Iraq war

and the voices of the people involved in

that so can I mean is it okay if I have

somebody from there just to start us off

well just speak very briefly about it

you know I'm I'm personally suffering at

the moment with PTSD since coming home

from Iraq and I don't honestly know

what's worse being shelled by people

that I don't know I've got no problems

with war having to deal every day with a

weakened NHS they do want to help but

they have no money to do so you know

I've seen several friends die you know

from overdoses and things like that's

it's coming out it's absolutely awful I

don't know what we did there you know I

feel like my mental health was swapped

for a few barrels of oil and that

you know it's quite a hard pill to

swallow I don't see the government

wanting to make any changes you know

we've got air strikes in Syria we're

dealing with Saudi Arabia but I have to

wait an hour enough sorry a year and a

half tacacs Esther just a basic

therapist to talk about my problems you

know I'd be on the streets if it wasn't

for my partner Vicki and she's living

its hell with me and I don't know you

know I'd like to see Jeremy what you how

you try and help us in the future if you

came to power

I was undiagnosed with PTSD and when I

came home I like many other people who

you know I've served we've ended up

getting into a bit of a fight because I

was undiagnosed I was sentenced to a

year and a half in military prison still

undiagnosed and then discharged from the

Army and it's its prey but it's been an

awful experience if I'm if I'm honest

with you because we felt that it's been

no help do not I mean assist thank you

very much for sharing that with us other

people you know this is something that

you know these these are the people that

went out and fought that but obviously

this was a decision was made on our on

our half off largely against the will of

the people at the time so I'm sure

people have got thoughts about this John

to come in yeah I think the issue of you

well first of all thank you very much

for sharing I know I think it the issue

of the Iraq Wars completely fractured

British society and I think you know

you're coming from that region my family

migrated and seeing the effects that our

foreign policy has on both people here

at home but also people abroad and the I

mean often as a society I feel like

because it's far away we don't see it we

we we tend not to talk about it and like

I know my family in our community is

completely disengaged with the Labour

Party once once we went in what I

believe it's not just my you know

tinkerbell belief but was in a legal war

that we engaged in that has seen the

region torn apart now we're seeing a

refugee crisis that is born out of that

and it's it's the cumulative effect of

what we do and you know we have we have

modern Iraq war crisis going on now the

question of Syria the question of

Palestine that's still gone up you know

we still have fundamental problems but

then I think I mean I think we have to

take the issues of foreign policy very

very seriously and see that they have

very very limp axe back at home but also

that our our moral guidelines should

extend beyond our borders the fact that

you know over a million people have died

in Iraq following what was an illegal

war you know the politics that we have

should extend beyond our borders and

what is the British channel you know

like and I think it's something that's

fractured society altogether yes I was

in the brims of a brilliantly devised

war in Afghanistan I saw no Dan from the

military as well I just wanted to I

remember

it struck me during the or the brexit

staff is always stuff but all the right

what kind of lease like made out the EU

is kind of like Spectre in James Bond

analogies it was all about sovereignty

and stuff like that but it was never

discussed there's this other if you're

really worried about sovereignty and my

lesson the lesson I learned is the

soldiers you have to think about the

other side of the Atlantic there's a

relationship there and I know Jeremy's

of shared platforms with Jeremy's bit

opposed those wars and the way we hang

on to American foreign policy

brilliantly obvious but I think there's

a serious discussion if we are worried

about sovereignty I mean there are no EU

there were never any EU bases on British

soil there are American ones the EU

never drags into Iraq and then

Afghanistan and then Iraq again and

Libya and Syria so I think that a

component of a foreign policy going

forward has to address the special

relationship with Americans I have now

no down at ofing dan has any doubt I

don't think the rest of the 400 people

in our veterans organization have any

doubt a lot we were fired for a u.s.

foreign policy nothing to do with with

with Britain and keeping our streets

safe by being over air or any of this

rubbish I think it's important we

address that relationship with America

thank you over here I really appreciate

your point and families and communities

are absolutely devastated I'm so glad

that you spoke and I think that that is

one of the reasons that we so welcome

the new leadership of the Labour Party

because we think it would be a way to

deal with that really

dangerous connection with following us

US policy and I would just underline to

pick up your point that you know holes

so I mean with the pictures of Syria are

absolutely horrifying that whole whole

whole regions people are being bombed

killed maimed and those who flee from

that heard that hell are then treated as

criminals you know when we get here I

mean I'm an immigrant myself so I think

those connections we really need to

build on we all all our societies are

being devastated by war and we really

look to Jeremy and John to help to help

turn that around because we we just we

cannot live this way my very last point

is that the the stealing of the oil that

that you know that the Britain the US

and the corporations are absolutely

plundering the third world and that

money is going to the 1% we never see it

here we you know our services are

deprived and there's a long history I

mean we've had five hundred years of

robbery from Africa India so I mean I

think as people of color that's

something that we want to bring to the

movement my last point although I know

we're talking about terrible things is

we're seeing you know in our Women's

Center there's there's new hope there's

new energy

people are coming in excited and wanting

to work you know on the campaign and I

think that we also have to keep that in

mind that there's really hope that we

haven't seen before so we want to go

forward in that way so I mean I just

wanted to follow on really from both of

those points I mean as as you say if you

want to challenge if you're worried

about sovereignty of the challenge that

the Washington Consensus that Atlantis

this relationship you have to challenge

you know the City of London but and

that's why you're you're being attacked

because you represent something that is

tech fortunately not in this room you

represent something that is so dangerous

to those vested in

they don't like it's not Jeremy sweetie

and that's what I like somebody who

knows what's right in this world thank

you millions why don't ya we'll come

back to Jeremy so I just wanted to talk

about homelessness so I started working

with homeless young people in the heart

of Houston a day Center in 1998 and

predominantly then we got many young

people from around the country for Milan

Scotland places like this from the North

young people who typically became homes

because they escaped and neglect abuse

and these type situations some people

that wanted to come and just you know

come to the big city and get a job we've

always had part of our homeless

population being veterans now I

volunteer with in different

organizations including food banks and

walking around Camden my borough and

different boroughs the increase in

homelessness is back

I saw a man begging on the street and he

looked malnourished and on the verge of

dying and most people and I watched 10

minutes most people he was invisible

completely - and I had a conversation

with the cab driver today and he felt

that people were homeless because they

weren't strong enough and this is the

perception that they failed at life

they're not good enough somehow they

just couldn't get it together it's their

fault and actually it's not true and now

we're seeing a steep increase in

homelessness and much of it has to do

with them people's attitudes towards

homelessness I mean many people

unfortunately had this path laid out for

them they're brought up in areas of

deprivation in towns where there's no

longer industries anymore and again

because of the abuse that they ignore

many of them disproportionately receive

at home can we just say that this is a

really very valuable and very good

discussion far better than any focus

group I've ever been

of dim and we'll have to work out how we

do it but it's got to be some way that

not exactly random but groups like

ourselves can be brought together to

continue this kind of discussion and

debate because political change only

comes about when a lot of people

mobilize together to achieve it and that

it's obviously fundamental to everything

that we're talking about believing so

whilst we one-level we're talking about

a series of policy issues mental health

housing health education war and peace

environment so on it's also about a

level of consciousness and understanding

and while social media is a great way of

instantly and rapidly communicating with

people it often can be superficial and

cannot go into the sort of life

experiences that we're talking about

here they help to form our opinions and

so I'm not quite sure how it can be done

but let's work out ways of doing it cuz

I want the sort of thing to carry on I'm

sure you will I hope you all do as well

on the the issue has been raised over

Iraq think back to the Gulf War of 1990

1991 there was an enormous use of

depleted uranium in southern Iraq after

the the troops went into southern Iraq

after Kuwait and that led to camia's

cancers and a health crisis all over

southern Iraq and led to 10 years of

sanctions on Iraq which didn't have much

effect whatsoever on the regime but had

a massive effect on the people of the of

the whole country the effect of the

regime was actually pretty minimal and

Britain was happily selling arms to Iraq

up until the late 1980s and I remember

being roundly abused by people in

Parliament for questioning the arms

sales strategy to sell I was saying and

they said well you've gotta sell arms or

everywhere ever anybody wants to buy

them and I said well sometimes these

things come back to bite you is it what

would you know about it I said well just

an innocent person just making an

observation

then we go into the build-up to the Iraq

war in 2003 and I remember a meeting a

group of Labour MPs had we Tony Blair we

sat around a table we went through all

the arguments several times and I just

said look Tony why are we doing this and

he slapped his hand on the table he said

we're doing it because it's the right

thing to do there's no analysis there

was no credible explanation of anything

so it went into Iraq we lost soldiers

the Americans lost soldiers the Iraqis

lost soldiers civilians died and it's

led to one war after another after

another after another it was a seminal

turning point in British politics and I

pledged last year that we would make an

apology for Iraq we did so along the

Chilcott report came out and I just felt

this horror but people like yourself

that suffered in Iraq those that died in

Iraq people then said well what was it

all for what was it all for there has to

be a change in attitude on foreign

policy it's too easy to build up kind of

patriotic fervor and say we're going to

go in there and sort it out it's very

easy to vote to send somebody else's son

or daughter off to a place of danger

when you're not doing it yourself and so

I well I've spent my life on opposing

these things and want to see foreign

policy based on peace based on democracy

based on human rights and based on

justice and in the with us Tyrael things

that we may well be appointing in the

future let's have a minister for

disarmament and a minister

Pease as well who is pursuing those

things around the world and looking to

enforce the non-proliferation treaty

rather than pretending it's an obstacle

to rearmament

it's a question of attitude the refugee

crisis around the world now is the

biggest it's ever been in recorded

history there's more displaced people

around the world there's any time in

recorded human history and there are

lots of reasons environmental human

rights Wars lots and lots of reasons why

people are refugees and the numbers of

refugees that go into the poorest

countries is very high India took a lot

of refugees from Sri Lanka Mexico took a

lot of refugees and Guatemala during the

Central American wars there are large

numbers of refugees in different African

countries because of the war in the

Congo and then likewise now with the

very large number of refugees in Libya

or in Jordan or in Greece or in Turkey

we have to deal with it by a political

solution in Syria demanding an urgent

ceasefire and bringing about a political

solution in Syria we also have to

recognize that the humanitarian crisis

requires a humanitarian response you

know to solve the refugee crisis with

barbed wire tear gas and electronic

surveillance

you only can solve it with humanitarian

approach as many other ices been raised

this morning it is about how we do our

politics how people educate themselves

and inform themselves and how they can

come together around a strategy which is

about social justice is about inequality

is about investment is about a growing

opportunities for young people rather

than leaving them debt ridden and

finding difficulty in getting jobs we're

not alone in this a lot of young people

in the United States and older in the

United States having exactly the same

kind discussion we're having now

likewise all across Europe maybe the

worm is turning on the neoliberal agenda

that was set down by Reagan and Thatcher

in the 1970s and so they see

historical justice time thanks very much

29th we were announce that we were up

for sale on March the 30th Jeremy Corbyn

broke away from his holiday in devon and

came and supported the still workers in

port talbot and the industry no

politician has been supports over I met

Jeremy I don't know if he remembers on a

street at Westminster and I was

screaming and going crazy because I've

been fighting for the student nurses

bursaries and you stopped to speak to me

and you gave me the time of day and you

listened to me and nobody else has

listened to me nobody else would step on

the street and talk to me about

something and you're the only person

that's done that and you listen you

really really listen to things that we

say to you I honestly think that Jeremy

Corbyn represents truth in politics

today and I don't think we see this

anywhere else and I think that is why

the force of the attack from wherever is

so strong and I think if we want truth

and we want honesty then I think this is

the man to vote for not we don't have

anybody who voices our concerns

apart from Jeremy thank you and I

believe that's the man for the people

for the first time in my life I've got

hope and our political system and I've

got hope that you know twelve months ago

we were able to achieve something that

was impossible and we can't take a step

back now and I think Jeremy John and

this kind of politics give young people

like me who have been marginalized

forever hope again huge percentage of

people out there now we don't vote in

general elections they're totally

disillusioned with with the political

system they're totally disillusioned

with politicians they've seen I think

Jeremy's the type of person who could

galvanize those people back to the

ballot box and hopefully vote for a

future government that cares a bit more

and Jeremy and John have stood alongside

me and just other disabled people as

we've been attacked again and again by

New Labour and by the

last two conservative governments and

that's why I am supporting Jeremy it

gives us hope but also just on the

environment it's always been at the

heart of Jeremy's policies been out in

Paris at the climate negotiations

outfits and flood victims understands

the need to invest in renewables in

order to move us away from fossil fuels

and start a green industry and also

understands it as a social justice issue

and how it does impact the poorest

people and how it will impact the

refugee crisis I just say something from

a queer and LGBT perspective that you've

been a you know in solidarity with with

our community your entire political

career and it's been really great to see
