- Manhattan beach
is a sleepy little surf town

About 20 miles away
from los angeles.

- It's actually known as
"the bubble."

People feel very safe
in manhattan beach.

- For a young police officer
excited to start a family,

Manhattan beach in the '90s
was a slice of heaven.

Far from the hustle bustle,
yet close enough to enjoy

All that la has to offer.

- Martin ganz loved
being near the beach,

And he loved protecting people.

And I never worried
about martin at work.

- But, of course,
police work is dangerous

No matter where it is.

[dramatic music]

- It was a very
high profile case.

- His 12-year-old nephew
was on a ride-along

And the only witness.

- And the engineers would
look through the atm camera

And tried enhancing photos
of the suspect's vehicle.

- But nobody had
any idea who did this.

It was a complete whodunit.

- Is somebody targeting
police officers?

- It consumed me.

I thought it was gonna
happen again--

And it did.

- This guy bursts into the room
full of police officers

And starts shooting.

- Two police shootings
in very close proximity.

- The cop killer
was still out there.

It was scary.

- That was one of the
hardest things I've ever

Had to go through
in my whole life.

[dramatic music]

- Two nights after christmas,

In the peaceful seaside
village of manhattan beach,

Local law enforcement is
settling in for what should be

A quiet graveyard shift.

- I'm jessica jones,
and in 1993,

I was working
as a police dispatcher

For the
city of manhattan beach.

December 27, my shift
started at 10:00 p.M.,

But there's usually a lull
in activity after christmas.

So I was sitting there
talking to my coworkers.

And then all of a sudden...

- I heard something
on the police radio

That I had never heard before.

- It sounded like a strange,
unearthly almost,

Kind of crying.

- Then I was able
to distinguish the words.

- My name is tim zins,
and in 1993,

I had been a patrol officer

With the manhattan beach
police department

Just about a year and a half.

[tense music]

That night
at about 11:00 p.M.,

The screaming started
to come over the radio.

- And then I heard
the word "mall."

- And I thought of
the manhattan village mall,

Which was a block away.

- Officer zins immediately
snaps into action

And races to the scene.

- It was dark,
but out of my right eye

I saw overhead lights
on a police car.

And as soon as I came up
behind his car,

I immediately recognized
officer martin ganz

Down behind his car, bleeding.

Martin was a traffic officer
and I was in patrol,

But we worked the same shift.

He was a friend.

- Officer zins quickly
radios for help.

- Then rushes
to martin's side.

- Martin was face down.

And when I turned him over,

I saw he had a gunshot wound
to his face

And he was bleeding profusely

And choking on his blood.

It was hard to process
seeing your brother-officer

Dying in front of me.

I knew it was bad.

- What officer zins sees next
is heartbreaking.

- His 12-year-old nephew
was out of the car,

Pacing back and forth--

Just in complete horror
and shock, and screaming.

Martin had his nephew with him
on an approved ride-along.

He brought him out to teach him

What it's like to be
a police officer.

And that's when I put
two and two together,

That the screaming
on the radio

Was his nephew
calling for help.

- Within minutes,
paramedics arrive at the scene

Along with dozens
of police officers.

- As 29-year-old martin ganz
is rushed

To harbor ucla medical center,

Officer zins desperately
tries to shield

Martin's 12-year-old nephew

From the trauma
he just witnessed.

- I needed to get him away
from what he was seeing

To hopefully calm him down
and to find out what happened.

He said martin
had made a traffic stop

For a possible drunk driver,

And the suspect shot him.

He said that the suspect's car
was a smaller compact car,

And that it was gray
or silver.

I didn't speak to him
for very long.

He was obviously traumatized
by the whole thing.

- Within minutes of
discovering officer ganz down,

Police quickly put out a bolo

For the gray
or silver hatchback

As officers
sweep the immediate area

In search of the suspect.

- But we didn't know
who the suspect was

Or why he shot martin.

All we knew was, we had a very
dangerous individual out there,

And everybody needed
to go out and--and find him.

[sirens wailing]

- Martin's traumatized nephew
is transported back

To manhattan beach pd, where
he's reunited with loved ones.

Then, around midnight,

Officer zins
receives the tragic news

He's been praying never comes.

- The watch commander
walked over to me

And just told me
that martin was dead.

I--I broke down in tears.

I just--I lost it.

He was a great human being,

And so many people
looked up to him.

[somber music]

- My name is pam schultz,
and in 1993,

I was engaged
to officer martin ganz.

[telephone rings]

That night, shortly after
1:00 in the morning,

My phone rang, and it was
martin's younger sister.

And she was screaming,

"martin's been shot
in the face.

He's dead!"

And I kept saying,
no, this--it can't be true.

And probably
within 20 minutes,

I had officers that knew me
at my front door.

And I just kept saying,
get me to the hospital.

Please take me to him.

And one of martin's
dear friends

Gently sat me down in a chair,
looked me in the eyes,

And just very matter-of-factly
said to me, "pam,

"he's not martin anymore.

Now he's evidence."

And I didn't know what to do.

I needed to...

[voice breaking]
hold his hand,

To touch his face, anything.

And I couldn't do that.

And that was
one of the hardest things

I've ever had to go through
in my whole life.

Because I couldn't
be there for him,

Like I knew he would be for me.

- My name is tim hageman,

And I'm a retired
police captain,

And in 1993,
I was a police officer

With the manhattan beach
police department.

Martin ganz was actually
the first person I met

When I arrived
my very first day.

And he was one of the
friendliest people

You could have encountered.

- Martin always wanted
to be a police officer,

And he was absolutely in love
with what he was doing.

- But martin also
had a soft side.

And he loved
his new fiancée, pam.

- Martin, he was so vibrant
and so alive.

He was my everything.

He had this charisma.

You just gravitated toward him.

- He grew up in orange county.

He came from a large family.

- Martin had a
fantastic childhood.

He was the only boy
of a lot of sisters.

And I do believe
that was good training,

As far as how women like
to be treated.

Martin came to take me
to lunch one day

Before we officially
started dating.

And when we got back
to my office,

There were a dozen red roses
waiting there for me.

Our relationship just
grew like wildfire.

- The couple
had just become engaged

Only three weeks
before the shooting.

- We were at the manhattan
beach police department

Christmas party
and he just said,

You know that we're getting
married, right?

And I replied, yes.
[laughs]

And I just knew
that we were gonna spend

The rest of our lives
together.

- By now, a few of
martin's family members

Have joined his nephew
at manhattan beach pd,

Where officers gently help him
muster the courage

To recall the painful details
of earlier that night.

- It was hard
for a 12-year-old to process.

He was still in shock
and obviously devastated

By what he had just witnessed.

But then martin's nephew
had said something

That surprised all of us.

He said he saw the suspect

And was able to tell us
what he looked like.

This was our one shot
at finding the killer.

[dramatic music]

- This guy bursts into the
hotel, firing off his gun.

- He did not have
a good time in prison

And said he was
never going back.

- She had looked at him,
and he shot her three times.

- Tuesday, December 28,
just hours after

Manhattan beach
police officer martin ganz

Is gunned down
during a routine traffic stop.

And per protocol, the case
has already been assigned

To the la county
sheriff's department.

Their first order of business:

Interview martin's
12-year-old nephew.

- My name is dolores scott.

In 1993, I was
a homicide investigator

With the la county
sheriff's department.

We knew that we were dealing
with a very fragile young boy,

So we did bring his mother
to the station

To try to calm him down.

So eventually the nephew
relayed to us

That he was on a ride-along
with his uncle that night,

And martin
had seen the suspect

Trying to make
a left-hand turn

Into the manhattan village.

And he believed the driver
was possibly intoxicated,

Because he had stopped
almost in the middle

Of the intersection.

So he pulled the vehicle over.

The nephew saw that martin
was approaching

The suspect's vehicle,

And then he heard a pop

And saw his uncle retreating.

The nephew got terrified,

So he ducked down
to the floorboard.

And then he heard running
and two more shots.

And then he heard a thump
and another shot.

- What the nephew says next
chills detectives to the bone.

- Then he peeked his head up
through the windshield.

And he said that the
suspect was now back

Alongside
the suspect's vehicle,

But turning with his gun
pointed at the windshield,

Looking directly at him.

He ducked back down
'cause he thought,

"oh, my god, he saw me."

But he didn't open fire
on the nephew.

And by the time the nephew
looked back up,

The suspect's car had gone.

He was a very brave witness.

- Despite being
terrified for his life,

Martin's nephew
remembers several details

That could blow
the investigation wide open.

- He said that the suspect
was of asian descent,

Mid-20s, medium built,

And that he was driving
a two-door hatchback.

But he didn't know the make
or model of the car.

- Thanks to martin's nephew,
investigators already

Have a clear picture
of what happened

To martin only hours earlier.

But when it comes to who
could have done this,

They're completely
in the dark.

- Nobody had any idea.

So you cast out a wide net.

Was it somebody
who knew martin?

Or is somebody targeting
police officers?

Are they committing violations
in hopes of being pulled over?

Is it gang related?

You just don't know.

- Obviously we know
that he had a gun,

So he might have been
wanting to rob

The local
ralphs grocery store.

- That was the only store
which was open,

So possibly he was on his way
to rob that store.

- As the sun rises
over los angeles

On Tuesday, December 28,
an autopsy is performed

At the coroner's office
in downtown la.

- My name is barbara turner.

In 1993, as a prosecutor,
I was assigned to the case

Involving the murder
of manhattan beach

Officer martin ganz.

The autopsy revealed
that officer ganz

Had been shot
three separate times.

- A round went in
just to the side of his vest

And exited the right shoulder.

So we feel
that was the first shot,

'cause that's his gun hand.

So we believe that
that's the reason why

He didn't retrieve his gun.

And he started running back
towards his vehicle.

- The second shot
went through his back

And was stopped
by his bulletproof vest.

And then the suspect
followed him

And delivered
the coup de grâce.

- The fatal shot
was a bullet hole

To the left cheekbone,

And the bullet was embedded
on the right back of the ear.

The embedded bullets were
.380 winchester from a handgun.

They were retrieved
and entered into evidence.

[suspenseful music]

- Investigators now know
how martin was killed,

And they begin to put together
a possible profile

Of the shooter.

- We believe this is
a very desperate person

That has an intent to kill,

Because he could have
flown the scene

After he shot martin
the first time, but he didn't.

He's not just trying
to get away.

He wants to make sure
that there is no witness.

- I'm tim miley.

In 1993, I worked for the

Los angeles county
sheriff's department.

We really thought
that maybe this is somebody

Who is on parole
and they're dirty.

They're carrying a gun,
they're carrying drugs,

Are about to commit a crime.

They did not want
to go back to prison.

But nobody had any idea
who did this.

It was a complete whodunit.

There was no suspects, there
was no license plate put out.

It's just a vague description
of a man in a hatchback car.

[tires squealing]

- But early Tuesday afternoon,
detectives believed

They may have a way
to identify

The suspect's hatchback.

- The murder happened
in front of a bank,

And they happened
to have security cameras.

And so right away,
the banks were contacted,

And they did turn over
their tape.

- So you see a picture
of martin's police car.

Then you see martin behind
his police car on the ground.

- We could see officer ganz
laying on the ground.

But we can also see
the shooter's car.

- We couldn't believe it.

This was huge
for the investigation.

Now we have the vehicle
the suspect was driving.

Now there's a chance we will
be able to find this guy.

[tires squealing]

[dramatic music]

- Less than 24 hours after
29-year-old police officer

Martin ganz
is viciously gunned down,

Bank surveillance video
could bring investigators

One step closer
to discovering the identity

Of the cold-blooded killer.

- When one watches
the video, you can see

The car officer ganz stopped.

But all we had was
a sliver of wheel,

Fender, mirror, and bumper.

- There's no way
to identify the make

And model with the naked eye.

So detectives take
a creative approach

And reach out to experts
for help.

- We went to
aerospace corporation.

It's a very large defense
contractor in el segundo.

- A lot of times they
volunteered their services

If they could be of any help
to law enforcement agencies,

And they said they
could assist in possibly

Enhancing the atm cameras
and helping us with the id.

So right away we sent the tapes
to aerospace to be examined.

- As they await the results,
law enforcement

Unleashes a massive effort
to hunt down the killer

Who brazenly slaughtered
one of their own.

- We had probably
60 investigators the first day.

So we had a lot of resources.

- In a lot of
high-profile cases

Like this when it's
a serious crime,

A task force is created.

And this task force
was based out of

The manhattan beach
police department.

- The murder of martin ganz
was significant

Because he was
the first officer

That was shot and killed
in the line of duty

In manhattan beach.

- Anytime a brother
police officer is shot,

It becomes very personal
to all of us.

- With no solid leads, police
plan to appeal to the media

By setting up a tip line

And releasing a sketch
of the suspect.

- We had the nephew
sit down with an artist

To do the composite drawing,

And he did a good job giving
a description of the suspect.

- My name is larry altman,
and in 1993,

I covered the murder

Of manhattan beach
police officer martin ganz

For the "daily breeze."

The sheriff's department
released a sketch.

We put it out in the media,
and of course it was scary.

There's a cop killer
out there.

- Many of us had the sketch
on the visor

Above our heads
in the police car.

I was determined to find
the person that killed martin.

At the time, it consumed me.

In my mind, I was stuck
in that night

Seeing martin dying
in front of me.

- For tim to do
all that he did...

I hope martin knew this.

His friend was there for him.

- Eight days after the murder,
police still have no leads,

And the community
of manhattan beach

Comes together to celebrate
the life of martin ganz.

- I was not prepared
for the amount of people

That were at the funeral.

It was a sea of blue.

There's no way
you could have fit

One more person in that church.

Manhattan beach,
very small town

Where people feel protected.

It really affected them.

[somber music]

- I was sad.

I was devastated.

I was broken.

And even though I had
thousands of people around me,

I still felt alone,
because the one person

That I needed
to have there with me

Couldn't be,

And I didn't know

How to put
a step forward without him.

[suspenseful music]

- Saturday, January 8th.

It's now been 12 days
since the shooting,

And detectives have a new lead
on the suspect's car.

- The engineers from aerospace
narrowed down

To about ten different models

That might fit
our suspect's vehicle.

- Car dealers from the area

Loaned us
a whole series of cars.

- Then we staged all those
vehicles one by one

In the exact position
as the suspect's car.

And the engineers would
look through the atm camera,

And then they'd compare
to the suspect's model.

And eventually,
they were able to tell us

That the vehicle
we were looking for

Was a daihatsu charade.

So if we can find the vehicle,

Then that might lead us
to the suspect.

- The police released all
of this new information

To the media.

Daihatsu was a small,
compact japanese car.

There weren't
that many of them.

So that narrowed it down.

- We learned through the
department of motor vehicles

That there was actually
4,600 daihatsus registered

In the state of california.

- So we added
to the task force

A whole bunch of detectives

Just to chase down
daihatsu charade.

[suspenseful music]

- By Thursday, January 20,

It's been nearly a month
since martin's murder

And the case is starting
to go cold.

But then the task force
gets an anonymous call

That could change the course
of the investigation.

- The person that
called in said,

"you should look into
a person by the name

Of roger hoan brady."

- They said he looks
like the composite,

So he could be good
for this murder.

- When you have a task force,
you have to investigate

Every clue as it comes in.

- So when we pulled up
roger brady on the computer,

We saw that he was
on parole for robbery.

- We learned that roger brady
had gone to federal prison

For six bank robberies.

He was facing up to 25 years,
but he got paroled

After only 3 years.

- Now we're interested.

So we call brady's
parole officer.

- We learned through
the parole officer

That he was living
with his parents in malibu,

Which is approximately
30 miles from manhattan beach,

And he was working at
a fast food restaurant.

- Then detectives asked
the crucial question.

What kind of car does
roger brady drive?

- The parole officer tells us,
"I called him in

"for a drug test
on January 18th, two days ago,

And he was driving
a daihatsu charade."

Okay, now we're
very interested.

♪ ♪

[dramatic music]

- It's Thursday,
January 20, 1994.

Almost a month
since manhattan beach

Police officer martin ganz
was slain in the line of duty.

And thanks
to an anonymous tip,

Detectives may finally
have a suspect--

28-year-old roger hoan brady.

- He looks like
the composite,

He's on parole
for armed robbery,

And he was driving
a gray daihatsu charade.

- We knew he was living
with his parents in malibu.

And he was put on surveillance,
so we could see where he went.

But unfortunately, that wasn't
very helpful for us.

- He doesn't move.

He just stays there.

- While the surveillance team

Sits on the brady home
in malibu,

Investigators
do a little digging

Into their new
suspect's background.

- His mother was vietnamese.

His father was american

And had been in the military
in vietnam.

And when they came
to the united states,

They lived
in los angeles county.

Roger had gone
to santa monica high school.

He had been basically
a straight-a student

Until his senior year,
when his grades started to fail

And he became
addicted to cocaine.

- He got involved in drugs,

And everything plummeted
from there.

And then he was robbing banks
to supply his drug habit.

- There was six different
bank robberies,

And they were federal offenses.

We learned the bank robberies
did not involve any shootings.

The suspect brady would
just walk in, show his gun,

Give me your money, and go out.

And they called him
the "sunglass bandit,"

Because he was always
wearing a wig and sunglasses.

Ultimately, they didn't
have to go to trial.

Brady was able to plead guilty

To two bank robberies
out of six.

He did just three years
prison time.

- After spending
several fruitless days

Watching brady's malibu home,

Investigators are eager
to get inside

Where they hope to find
evidence linking brady

To the murder of martin ganz.

- We wanted to see
if we could find

The .380 weapon that was used,

Then hopefully
the firearms expert

Can match the ballistics
with the embedded bullets

Retrieved from officer ganz's
vest and his skull.

- Early Thursday morning,
January 27th,

Police arrive
at the brady home,

And because their suspect
is on parole,

They don't need
a traditional search warrant.

- There was a parole search
done at his home

With the approval
of his parole officer.

- When we approached,
we were aware

That we have to be careful

'cause he is an
armed bank robber,

And it was a good chance
that this is the same person

Who executed officer ganz.

He could be very dangerous.

- If he's already
killed one cop,

It's not a stretch to think
he'd do it again,

So detectives are on guard.

- But when we
entered the house,

He was on the couch in pajamas.

He didn't look like a killer.

He looked like a slob.

Brady told us his parents
were in vancouver, washington,

House shopping, so he was
in the house by himself.

Then we asked what
he was doing on the 27th,

The date officer ganz
was murdered.

- Detectives are expecting
a rehearsed alibi,

But instead receive
a surprising response.

- He says, "I don't know.

I'll ask my mom
when she gets home."

♪ ♪

And when we searched the
house, he had nothing on him.

He had nothing in the house,
no contraband at all.

Not even drugs,
you know, no alcohol.

- Detectives also
carefully inspect

Brady's daihatsu charade.

- We went out
and searched the car.

He had nothing in the car.

So we didn't find any guns.

We didn't find a .380.

- Detectives have
zero evidence

Connecting brady to the crime.

But before moving on,

They reach out
to their eyewitness.

- We showed a photo
of roger hoan brady

To our witness, the nephew.

But he did not id the suspect,

So we could not create a solid
case for roger hoan brady.

- It's a letdown.

I mean, you're crushed,
basically,

Because you would think,
okay, this is our person,

But it turns out not to be.

So martin's killer
is still out there.

- By early February,
it's been six weeks

Since martin's murder,
and the task force tip line

Is starting to go quiet.

Then on Monday, February 14,
valentine's day,

Detectives receive
shocking and tragic news.

Another officer shooting
has occurred

At a hotel in torrance,
just a few miles south

Of manhattan beach.

- As soon as I heard
about it on the news,

It took me right back
to answering the phone

At 1:00 in the morning

On the night
that martin was killed.

And it just felt
like a gut punch.

- And when detectives
learn more details

About the shooter,
it stops them cold.

- The suspect was identified
as being of asian descent,

Just like our suspect.

- You had
the two police shootings--

Manhattan beach and torrance--
in very close proximity.

The suspect in torrance
appears to match

The description
from martin's nephew,

And both were possibly
targeting police officers.

You think about that,
everything together,

This has got to be the same
person who killed martin ganz.

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- On Monday,
February 14, 1993,

Six weeks after the vicious
murder of officer martin ganz,

The la sheriff's department
receives

Tragic news from torrance pd.

There's been another officer
shooting just six miles away.

- What had happened was,
this guy

Burst into this 12th floor room
at this hotel in torrance

Where about 13
police officers,

Members of the palos verdes
estates police department,

Were having
sort of a combination

Meeting/sensitivity training.

And none of them are
sitting there with a gun.

They're in a meeting.

- The suspect entered
the seminar with two handguns,

Wearing a mask and vest,

And basically was telling them
this was a holdup.

- He's shouting,
"it's a robbery,"

And these officers believe that
it was part of the training.

No one was complying,

And one of the officers said,
"this isn't funny anymore."

And then that man is shot.

And then another officer
is shot.

[gunshot]

- Nobody else was injured,

But he ended up killing two
of the officers in that room.

- And then the other officers,
they all ran at this guy

Who was still firing off
the gun.

- They take him to the ground,
and they're struggling with him

Because he is
putting up a fight.

And through the struggle,
the vest that he was wearing

Was basically lodged up
into his neck area...

And he died at the scene.

- He'd strangled on his
bulletproof vest,

Is what the coroner
later ruled.

- Investigators also learned
from torrance police

The identity of the shooter--

32-year-old david fukuto.

- He matched the description.

He's a cop killer.

And it's only been six weeks
since the ganz murder,

And that immediately
raised the specter of,

Is this the guy that
killed martin ganz?

- Believing he might
also be martin ganz's killer,

Detectives are eager
to know more about fukuto,

And they're surprised
by what they discover.

- The david fukuto
investigation

Was handled
by torrance police department.

So we learned through them
that he had always

Wanted to be a police officer.

- David fukuto,
he had tried to become

An lapd officer and had failed.

He scored very well on the
test, but not well enough.

So we know that
he has reason to hate cops.

- Maybe he had a grudge
against police officers

Because he himself
could not be one,

And he took out his anger
and his revenge

On a group of police officers.

Your immediate thought is,
this could be the same person

Who killed martin ganz.

- As their suspicions
grow stronger,

Investigators run a ballistics
test on the two guns

Fukuto used
at the hotel shooting.

- Our ballistics
firearm section

Did compare the weapons
that he had

With the embedded bullets
we retrieved

From martin's vest and also
from the coroner's office...

But nothing matched.

- So we could not
make him on ballistics.

- We also put david fukuto in
a photo lineup for the nephew,

And he did not pick him out.

- And fukuto had no access
to a daihatsu charade

That we could find.

- So while fukuto looked good,

The evidence showed
it wasn't him.

- We had nothing to connect him
to the murder

Of officer martin ganz.

- With david fukuto
cleared as a suspect,

The investigation is
back to square one.

- Two months after the murder
of martin ganz,

The case was still wide open,

And the cop killer
was still out there.

- It was incredibly
important to me

To bring martin's killer
to justice

For his nephew's peace of mind.

And also, if he was capable
of killing a police officer,

He was capable of anything.

- And we are not
any farther ahead

Than we were when we started.

I thought we might
not ever find out

Who killed martin ganz.

- I never gave up hope.

I never thought that martin's
killer would never be found.

But until we're able
to catch the killer,

I was thinking this was
gonna happen again.

♪ ♪

- As the months go on,

There's still
a killer out there,

And every man and woman
with a uniform is at risk.

- It was scary.

I covered it regularly,
week after week,

As police searched
for the killer.

So it was always
on everybody's mind.

And police had
thousands of tips,

But there was nobody new
identified as a suspect.

And after a while,
life gets back to normal.

There wasn't anything new
to report.

It was just quiet.

- By August, seven months have
passed since martin's murder.

[phone rings]

Then, out of the blue,
detective miley

Receives new information
about an old suspect.

- On August 3, 1994,
I got a call

From the la parole officer
of roger brady.

- His parole officer said
roger hoan brady

Moved with his parents
up to washington state,

Very close
to the oregon border.

- And he said that brady had
just robbed a grocery store

In the portland, oregon area.

- And during his getaway,
he shot a female victim.

- A middle-aged woman holding
her bags of groceries.

Her name was catalina correa.

She had looked at him,
and he shot her three times

And killed her.

- And then he took off
in his daihatsu charade.

Then I knew--

Brady killed martin ganz.

- It's been more
than seven months

Since officer martin ganz
took his last breath

In manhattan beach.

Now, 1,000 miles away
in oregon,

Police have learned that
their one-time suspect,

Roger hoan brady,
has shot and killed a witness

After robbing a grocery store.

got the license plate number.

Because the car was registered

Under his father's name,

And where they were living
in washington state,

Just over the border.

- They responded
to that location

Where the vehicle
was registered.

They surrounded
the apartment complex.

They spotted the daihatsu.

And roger brady was arrested.

- La sheriff's investigators
have just one question

For their cohorts
in hillsboro county, oregon--

What kind of gun did brady use
at the grocery store shooting?

- We were advised that
brady also used a .380

In that murder in oregon.

So we sent our
firearms expert to oregon,

And he actually
compared the weapon

That roger brady used there

To our ballistics of the weapon
that was used

For the murder
of officer martin ganz.

It was a perfect match.

- That was it.

We--literally a smoking gun,
that was what we needed.

And then he was arrested
on our case as well.

- We were thinking,
oh, my god,

This is what we've been
waiting for.

- When I heard that
the suspect was arrested,

I felt relieved.

But I was angry that
he had killed somebody else.

- Brady is tried
in oregon first,

And in November of 1995,

He's convicted of the murder
of catalina correa.

- He was sentenced
to life in oregon,

And then we
transported him back

To face his charges
in california.

- In October of 1998,
nearly five years

After martin's murder,
brady finally

Stands trial in los angeles.

- The theory
presented in court matched

What homicide investigators
pursued earlier--

Brady was going in to rob
the grocery store in the mall.

- But thanks
to the oregon case,

They build a strong motive
for his behavior.

- In oregon, he's robbing
grocery stores

To supply his drug habit.

- We believe he was en route
to commit a robbery

And he was pulled over.

So in his mind, he's on parole,
he's got a gun.

- He definitely would have been
sent back to prison

If he was on parole
in possession of a firearm.

- He did not have
a good time in prison

And told multiple people he was
never going back to prison.

So officer ganz was shot...

Chased,

Shot in the back,
and then executed.

[gunshot]

- On November 19, 1998,

Brady is found guilty
of first degree murder.

- Roger hoan brady
was sentenced to death.

But in california,
it really means life

Without the possibility
of parole.

- No matter what
the sentence was,

It wouldn't be enough,
in my eyes.

There--there is nothing
that can make it okay.

- Martin's death
still resonates

Because of the dynamic person
that martin was,

The impact that he had
in his short 29 years of life

On so many people.

I don't have closure.

There isn't a day that goes by
that I don't think about it.

- My way of healing
through this entire process

Has been to talk about martin,
to keep his name alive.

And now there are memorials

All over the city
of manhattan beach.

His sacrifice is recognized,
it's acknowledged,

And it will forever
be remembered.
