[Matt] As the weather gets colder,
a lot of these alligators are gone

and ever since our rowdy
neighbor showed up last week

the nutria have disappeared

and we haven't eaten more than just
a little fish here and there in a while.

So, right now we can't afford
any missed opportunities.

Something's bound to want it.

- Getting 'em? Yeah, baby!

miles to the west,

Max and EJ are reeling
from the loss of their partner...

I owe it to the
challenge to tap.

[Gary] I can't do it anymore.

And are nearing the
end of their meat reserve.

- [EJ] Sucks, man, that this is our first meal without Gary.
- Yeah, I know.

Definitely, uh, there's
a hole today. For sure.

[Max] Yeah, like a void.

Today will be the second day
without Gary. To not have him here is...

It's kind of a weird...

Weird feeling, you know,
to not have his energy,

not have his
contagious... Just...

Presence. Losing him
is like losing ten people.

So we're going down to get
the canoe, try to get it stoked up.

Max and I are
laying sticks along

the canoe to help burn it out. So we're
getting a little fire going within the canoe.

And as it burns down, we're
gonna put mud on the side

to make sure it doesn't
burn through the canoe.

- We gotta mud the cracks.

[Narrator] Starting with a
500 pound cypress tree,

EJ and Max will need to burn
and remove 70% of its mass

to achieve the ideal combination
of weight and buoyancy.

[EJ] I wanna see if we can give it a
shot so we can get this going then.

[Max] We're now focusing on this canoe
to help move in and out of all these...

These canals, and be able
to fish off of it and to create

more opportunities when it comes
to resources and food for our team.

our best option.

Uh-oh. Just heard some thunder.

We're backed up
against the wall on time.

There's a front coming in from the
north, it's dropped by five degrees,

but we just gotta get
moving on this canoe.

This is an extremely challenging
situation at the moment.

I've got rain coming down.

I need fire to burn
out this dug-out canoe.

I really think if I can get
this thing really cooking,

like some rain's coming in.

that we think is
worth the effort.

And we got lucky with
some warmer days.

But, uh,

looks like colder... colder
weather and some rain coming in.

- [Matt] Definitely.

Didn't want to get

And we are back to the shelter.

[EJ] Ooh, that's a cold wind.

on here, kinda like team up.

One of us can hold 'em
in place from the outside,

one of 'em can tie
'em from the inside.

I'm gonna cut some
materials for the sides.

I'm cold and I'm
wet and I'm terrified.

I feel like it's coming. I feel like it's
not, I don't feel like it's going away.

once we get these on the roof, man, um...

[Jeff] With the possibility
of colder temperatures

I see a definite shift
in Steven's mood.

He's legitimately worried.

[Steven] I hate being
cold and wet and rained on.

Hypothermia is a real
thing. And we're naked.

Um... in the swamp. And I'm walking
around crotch-deep in frozen water.

And last time I did
that, I was in Alaska.

[Matt] When we hit that
cold front for ten days

all of that was from the north.

Their shelter is facing...

The open face is facing north.

Exactly north. And that
means when that cold comes in

and the rain comes in it's going
to blow right directly under their...

- Yeah.
- And if they won't have a dry spot in there...

They should have had a shelter
that's fairly waterproof and warm by now.

They both have some of the, you
know, most days on this challenge,

but what they don't realize is,

- like, you can't survive hypothermia. No.

- hypothermia doesn't care

how many days you've
had on the challenge at all.

[Steven] We're literally using
the framework of our raft,

use that as a
front face firewall

and reflecting
wall for the heat.

[Steven] We have to
finish our shelter today.

And not only that, we have to do it in
this rain. We don't have a choice today.

[Jeff pants]

Our sleeping area is staying
completely dry in the shelter.

But on the outskirts, we're
getting some water pooling.

[Rain pouring]

[Thunder rumbling]

[Matt] We're ready
to weather the storm.

[Rylie] We are bone-dry,

the shelter is warm and cozy.

So, we can pretty much just
chill for the rest of the day.

[Ryan] Yeah.

And that is absolutely
huge in survival.

No mercy.

Mother nature
shows no mercy to us.

[Jeff shivering] That thunder,

that could be the cold front.

Which means the cold
could hit by this evening.

[Steven] Oh, it's
gonna hit this evening.

Yeah.

[Steven] It'll be probably one of
the coldest Naked and Afraid nights.

Ever.

[Thunder claps]

[Jeff] It's been
raining all night.

Terrible.

You think, I should start... do you
wanna move the palms out of the way first?

[Steven] Okay. I'm gonna
take every single one of them.

Every damn palm, yep. Figure...

We'll use every one?

[Jeff] After last night,
I absolutely appreciate.

Steven's feelings about
working on the shelter.

There is nothing more
painful and torturous

than a cold rain while
you're naked and hungry

out in the wild.

I trust you with palms.

And then once... let's
each destroy that job.

[Steven] And we'll

Rained on and off
throughout the night.

Pretty wet, but,

is now down to jerky.

Hopefully honey hole over here
will bring us a couple more catfish

so we can get some more nutrients in
ourselves, and that's gonna help us a lot.

Oh, wow, the tide's gone out.

I can't go up to my

It's been about 17 days
since my testicle injury,

where the swamp tried to
steal my manhood from me.

When you get your wings
clipped, a guy like me,

in a survival situation...

Since Gary's been gone,

we've not had the
golden touch around

to get fish on the line anymore.

on our gator lines.

last few improvements to chill.

We're blocking off a few areas that
might allow some wind in at night.

And we're also gonna
finish the top of the shelter

and make sure we
get no drips inside.

[Ryan] It is flipping
cold, the winds are up.

The rain's been on and off,
almost like a tropical storm.

That means colder weather, colder
winds, colder stormfronts are on the way.

[Ominous music playing]

[Matt] It's weather like this,
it's also a really hard time to fish.

Knowing a front is coming
in, often pushes the water out.

We are currently looking at
a very wet and damp canoe.

We're facing issues because

we've created a bowl that
essentially has collected water.

And we need to burn out the bowl
to continue burning out the canoe,

um, making it
harder for it to burn.

I'm gonna start hacking again,

get down a good bit,

clear that out, burn some more.

So we wanna make sure we get down
far enough that we can sit in this thing.

Slow is smooth
and smooth is fast.

[EJ grunting]

That rain didn't do

In order for us to offset that,

we need to have a form of
outrigger or support system

that will counterbalance
any sort of tippyness.

If it goes to the left, it'll be
buoyant on the left-hand side.

be weight on that left-hand side.

[Max] This is gonna be the pontoon
to our outrigger for our canoe...

we could flip.

And if you fall in this water
in the swamp with this wind,

man, you can get the
hyperthermia really quick.

So we're plaining and shaving
the tree down to get the bark off it

so it'll be easier to dry
out. It'll be more buoyant

and then save all
these shavings here

in case we need to make a fire on the
way, we'll have dried out good tinder.

It's called smart survival, thinking
ahead, don't waste any resources.

freezing cold outside.

The wind has
switched directions.

We're getting clouds
in from the Gulf.

And you can tell right way, we
are about to hit some kind of front.

So there's almost nothing more
vital than a solid collection of firewood.

which is unsettling, because it
could be bringing even colder weather.

All these things are
recipes for kind of a disaster.

Right now, it is as
wintery as possible.

It feels like

So we have to make the shelters

as good as we
can possibly make it

and just hope the
weather gets better.

Our fish are freezing out here.

their neighbors...

forced a change in strategy...

Think we're gonna have to,

you know, start thinking
about land animals.

We are starting to think we're gonna
travel through unknown destination,

closer to extraction point.

for a difficult land trek north,

canoe project paid off

as they headed north
for higher ground.

freezing night without a complete shelter.

We just need something
really temporary for the night

and prevent any
weather to come in.

And that's all we can do.

a little backpack

to help carry some
of the stuff today.

make it kinda make the trek.

No matter what, hell or high
water, we're travelling north.

We are in search of a better
spot on the way to extraction.

Extraction is a long way south

and the only way to
get there is to walk.

So, it's unknown.

Somehow packed up, pretty much.

Some extra cordage.

Arrowheads. Then we have
fishing line with two hooks.

And, um, every time
you get zapped of heat,

you're gonna burn
calories that warm back up.

And we're at a point where
we don't have free calories

to give away besides
setting up shelter,

hunting and doing the
very necessities of survival.

[EJ] So today we need to
sharp our wall on the northside.

And build a matching
one on the southside.

Yeah, I got it.

We're, uh, working
on the shelter.

And here we're gonna do the
same thing here on the other side.

Work it around, this
is just the first layer.

This portion of the challenge,

it's all about
winning these nights.

These cold nights.

working through knee-deep water.

So this hike is
definitely chilly.

The mud on our feet is
chilling us to the bones.

But at the same time, we
know it's a means to an end.

A means to a new destination.

And we're just gonna
trekking through this because

there's a home out there
somewhere waiting for us.

sure I had feet.

And it doesn't.
