of a new American series

which became a phenomenon.

People seem crazy talking about this.

The show is called Glee.

Glee became a household name

for millions
of self-proclaimed "gleeks."

I'm a gleek.

IN MAY 2009, A GROUP OF ACTORS
DEBUT ON TV WITH GLEE

It's the best time of my life.

UNTIL 2020, ALL OF THEM
THEY WERE FAMOUS

AND THREE OF THEM WERE DEAD

The deceased was identified
as actor Cory Monteith,

which became very famous
on the popular TV series, Glee.

OUR HEROINE, ANGEL AND IDOL

We think Maya disappeared
in the middle of an afternoon.

There are reports that alcohol
and other substances

they were found in her hotel room.

Glee actor Mark Salling was arrested
for possessing child pornography.

The cast had more difficulties
than everyone else.

Nobody wanted anything bad anymore.

We always said:
"Not again. Not again."

I don't want to talk about curses,

But that's what you end up thinking.

Several actors tweeted

saying they were mistreated
by Lea Michele.

Things kept happening
after the end of the series.

This industry can be very dangerous.

I am a survivor of domestic violence.

At this point, it appears to have been suicide.

If he had never acted on Glee,
Would he still be around?

There were many tragedies.

How did this happen? And why?

My first reaction

it was to blame.

I still think it's someone's fault.

I was nervous in the morning

Naya worked as an actress
since I was very little.

It was in her DNA.

I don't think I see that...

about 25, 30 years ago.

and was catapulted to stardom,

And the public wanted more and more.

Glee's role in history
of culture and entertainment

that I have worked with.

They were all really amazing.

They were good at everything,
for sure.

I will introduce each of them.

Jenna Ushkowitz.

Most of the Glee cast

It was the perfect casting choice.
They caught these people

and turned them into stars.

Kevin McHale.

I think they were chosen
for who they were.

Cory Monteith.

They were chosen
to be themselves

as characters.

Chris Colfer.

Chris loved classic musicals
theater.

His audition song was
"Mister Cellophane", because it's like him.

Chris grew up in Clovis, Ohio,
and it certainly wasn't popular.

It was years of feeling invisible
in that small town,

and finally be able to tell the world:
"I'm here."

Amber Riley.

The first time I saw Amber Riley,

I loved her boldness.

When you see her resume,

There is no mention of participation
in TV series or films.

And now the co-creator
and executive producer, Ryan Murphy.

Tell us a little about the cast
and how the tests went.

Many stars wanted to participate,
and I think...

We thought it was a series
to discover talents.

Everyone who took the test had
than singing and dancing, it was really fun.

Mark is begging to shave
head since we filmed the pilot.

He auditioned with the mohawk,
that was his mistake.

We loved it and left it in the series.

on the couch at a friend's house.

It was difficult to hear things

I grew up in Victoria,
which is on the Vancouver side.

And what were you doing there?

I've had a million jobs.

I welcomed customers at Walmart.

You know that guy?

I drove a school bus,
I worked in cafes and restaurants.

I think I met Cory
about five years before Glee.

And he lived in Victoria.

And a friend of his warned him
that they had opened a new studio.

And they thought he would be
very good at that.

So Cory took a class
that I was filming.

It was his turn.

He made a scene,

and everyone was silent.

And you could see the eyes
of acting teachers shining

from what they were seeing.

You feel a chill
when you see something like this.

When you see a scene of someone
who has never done anything before

and hit the nail on the head,

It's so cool because you feel
an energy, like:

“Oh my god, what did I just watch?”

And I remember that at some point

he auditioned for Glee.

I'm Cory Monteith.

At first, he was a little hesitant

to give your all.

And since he was a drummer
and this was going to be a musical,

they took cups, pans
and plastic pots.

He used everything he could
to play the drums.

That's why he got the role.

It was a very original and different video.

And that was always the idea
of our selection.

Then...

I didn't think I was
who sang or danced well

when I auditioned for the series.

But I sent a tape from Canada.

I knew about his past,

but when he got the role,

because the piano is out of tune.

Much of Rachel Berry was born
in that first test.

For me, being Rachel Berry
is to be a fighter, totally focused

and want something above
of anything else.

Everything you heard about Lea
It's her real life.

If you saw her on TV acting a certain way,

she's like that in real life.

Cory too.

Mark too.

Many people enter
in this business thinking

who wants to be an artist,
wants to tell stories, but then...

you see how the sausage is made.

There are times when you are destroyed.

Fans are everything, Cory!

And you don't know what to do.

When Cory moved to Los Angeles,
one of my concerns,

who knew a little about his past...

It didn't seem like this change
Was it going to bring all that back?

If you catch the alcohol and drugs scene
from Vancouver

and multiply by ten,

in Los Angeles.

that I produced

and I asked Cory to participate.

And I didn't expect that from Cory,
I had never seen him angry.

It's funny,
but in one of the acting classes,

one of the questions was:
"What do you want from your acting career?"

And Cory said he wanted to be famous.

And the acting teacher said:

"You can't want to be famous."

If fame is what you want,

when you get it,

you will understand
that fame can be poisonous.

Can I put the microphone on?

You can, it's okay.

You can sit down.

We needed someone
to share the house in Culver City.

And out of nowhere, I get a call

from a Canadian number.

"What's up, man? This is Cory.

I'm moving to Los Angeles
because I got a role

on a Fox series.

And I said: "Cool, what's the series?"

"It's like a high school with dancing and singing."

And I thought, "Oh my God!
This series looks horrible."

Then I went to talk to the guys at the house
and said:

“He should be broke in a few months.

But he seemed like a nice guy on the phone,
So let's give it a try."

Welcome to the first room.

making some drinks.

When Cory moved there,

It was New Year's Eve in 2008.
The next day...

I think he spoke casually

something about taking drugs.

He wanted us to know
of his past,

that he was sober

and that this was important in his life.

I heard about Cory's difficulties
with addiction

and his dark high school past.

CORY'S PARENTS DIVORCED
WHEN I WAS SEVEN YEARS OLD.

AT 13, I ALREADY MISSED SCHOOL
TO USE DRUGS AND ALCOHOL.

He fell in with the wrong crowd
and wanted to be accepted.

CORY ATTENDED TWELVE SCHOOLS,

INCLUDING PROGRAMS
FOR PROBLEMATIC ADOLESCENTS.

I knew he had
a questionable past,

in relation to drugs and alcohol.

CORY USED A LARGE AMOUNT
DRUGS

AVAILABLE AROUND YOU.

I remember he said to me:

"I thought I was going to die early."

At 18, because he got involved
with the wrong crowd at the time.

UNCONTROLLED BEHAVIOR
CORY TOOK IT

STEALING A LOT OF MONEY
FROM THEIR OWN FAMILY.

YOUR MOTHER AND FRIENDS DID
AN INTERVENTION AT AGE 19.

HE DID A REHABILITATION
OF DRUGS AT AGE 21.

I think he did rehab
of drugs and alcohol,

and someone at the clinic said
that he should try to be an actor.

Just look.

So acting became something he could do

focus your energy.

Now he was 28 years old.

He had already matured, he was another person.

The bottles on the wall and such.

It's nice to welcome friends,
and you don't even drink.

- Yeah, I don't even drink.

He was in another moment

THIS WILL BE A SUCCESS

I remember seeing
commercials in college

with Broadway stars,
as Lea Michele, on TV.

I was excited to see the series.

It was an important series for Fox.

Fox wanted it to be a success.

You can expect emotions, chills...

It's by Ryan Murphy,
So there will be twists and turns

and lots of good music, on top of everything.

I remember perfectly
we had concept meetings

right before the pilot.

That's when Ryan walked in,
He sat down and said:

"And if no one understands,
what do we do?"

I don't know!

"They are high school students

running here and there and singing...

I hope it lasts a season,
at least."

That's what I thought.

Cory got a copy of the pilot.

Whenever someone came home,
he said:

"Want to watch my pilot?"

I must have watched that pilot
about twenty times before the premiere.

At the end of the episode,
when they sing "Don't Stop Believing",

I look at him and say:

"My goodness, man,
This is going to be a success!"

THE PILOT WAS SEEN BY MORE
OF 9.5 MILLION PEOPLE.

The script was clever.

He made me cry, it was going to be a success.

Lea's voice is incredible.

I will never forget
the first time we heard it.

We were like this...

She was going to be a star.

That's all, one star.

This changed my mind, and I saw that
we would live with him for a while.

I think it's the universal power of music.

THE AUDIENCE HAS GROWN
TO 13.5 MILLION VIEWERS.

In the beginning, fame for the cast
it was so exciting.

Now, you are recognized,
people see you on the street

and they know who you are.

We look at each other every day

and we wonder how this happened.

It was magical, it was incredible.

Being at the beginning of something

I was a gleek.

from the words "glee" and "geek".

Nobody expected it to turn around
this global phenomenon,

but that's what happened after the premiere.

How much did they sing the Journey song,

the next day she turned to music

Everyone was singing

The series was about the songs,

with our boys.

It was one of the times
I saw the presentation and thought:

"Wow, we're going to get somewhere,
achieving something."

And they also took the cast
for events in large stores,

like what they did with boy bands
in shopping malls.

These actors were not established

and were taken into the spotlight

and seen as big stars.

In the first shopping mall, everyone
were singing "Don't Stop Believing."

I will remember one person
put a baby on the table

and ask me to autograph.

Being able to attract such large crowds,

it was a signal to producers
that this was something special.

As they told us that we
I couldn't want to be famous,

see Cory's career

IN 2012, "GLEE" WAS THE FOURTH SERIES
THAT MADE THE MOST PROFIT ON TV.

After seeing the success of Glee,

Fox couldn't wait
to enjoy this.

She organized tours
where the cast traveled on hiatuses

and performed throughout the country.

All shows were sold out.

All shows.

There was so much shouting that she felt the energy
with the curtain down.

The public didn't want
for the show to end.

We finished the first season,

Normally the actors have a rest.

And they manage to go on vacation for a while.

But the cast of Glee had

GLEE TOOK 16TH PLACE
AMONG THE 25 TOURS OF THE YEAR.

They had no time off.

For the actors,
It became a year-round job.

Those young people got so rich,

and deservedly so.

They gave their private lives
to your audience.

They gave up everything.

It was reported that Lea Michele
and Chris Colfer

Then he calls me out of the blue and says:

"What do you think about living
in a house in the Hollywood Hills?"

So we moved in together again.

It has reached a point
in which he hated fame.

"I'm so tired.
I just want to get some rest.

I can't take these songs anymore."

And I remember saying:
"I don't wish fame on my worst enemy."

It was like, "Wow!"

Shortly after noon, an ambulance
called the Vancouver police

reporting a sudden death in a room
from the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel,

in downtown Vancouver.

The deceased was identified as the actor
31 year old, Cory Monteith,

who gained fame
with the popular series Glee.

I had to call and tell everyone
what had happened.

I called them to come home,
for us to support each other.

From the moment I knew

until it is released,
maybe an hour has passed.

The public fan memorial
paying tribute and condolences

Cory Monteith continues to grow.

Your colleagues are still trying to understand
this shocking death.
