all me, so I'm a bit nervous,

I think it's only fitting
that we pay some respect

and hear a little bit about
the history and tradition of
the Kai Tahu people.

According to Kai Tahu tradition,
the first people to arrive in
the South Island were the Waita.

The chief, Matiti, gave
his son-in-law Rakaihautu
a great waka named Uruao.

- He filled that waka with people
from local tribes and set off to
find new lands.

- Rakaihautu carried with him
a great ko, or digging stick,
called Tu Whakaroria,

and when he landed here,
he dug three pools.

- Those pools were used to predict
what the South Island may have to
offer.

The predictions revealed that they
would find lakes and waterways full
of sustenance―

lakes that would be freezing cold
and would be dug by man's hand.

A bit like what you
can see around here.

- For Kai Tahu, these histories
reinforce their tribal identity,

solidarity and continuity
between generations.

Describing the events would shape
Te Waipounamu and Kai Tahu as an iwi.

- Which brings me to your team name.

You are Karearea.
(CHEERING)

I'd be pretty pumped about it too ―
the New Zealand falcon. Pretty cool
animal.

Known to be bold and assertive
but also treacherous.

The whale is a taonga species
representing abundance and richness,

and they are regarded
as a chiefly animal.

the first team face-off?

- For the first part, four paddlers
will row their boat and two jumpers
out to the pontoon.

The jumpers will hop out and
try and catch the key hanging
from the overhead beam.

They will swim those keys back
to shore to open a treasure box.

Two players will assemble the puzzle.

Once assembled, the final two players
will throw sandbags at the puzzle to
knock it down.

First team to completely
knock down their puzzle wins.

- But, of course,
you wanna know what's up for grabs.

They've got their paddles out,
wanting to push us offcourse.

They need to get around the buoy,

first, and so I was like, great,

- This is not a normal kind of

has to be built upwards.

And what Eli and I don't have

working on this puzzle.

- We need to match up the border
to the pattern. It needs to make
a whale.

the whale in between, and these are
all gonna connect up on the outside.
