I have to be honest and say
I haven't really digested that.

You don't realise the pressure.
It's so big. This club, it's massive.

There's no guarantee of anything.
We still have to win the games

that we need to get the points
that we need, so.

To manage this, the city, the players,

I think he's done that unbelievably.

to the summer transfer window

if they're going to compete with Europe's

Okay. So, I think obviously
this is going to be a big window for us.

I know the budget that we have in place
is not a big one.

Definitely need a midfield player.

finding these bloody midfielders,

you know, they're like sodding gold dust.

Inevitably, there becomes some decisions

about how and when you rotate players.

We've got a couple of our positions
where we've got ageing players,

which you simply won't be able
to churn out the same level of games

week in, week out.

Under financial fair play
regulations, the more the club earn,

the more opportunities they have
to improve their squad.

Wish we could give you
more money, but we are constrained.

There are various ways
we can increase that target number.

And, obviously, as an ownership group,
I know you guys

are focused on everything we can.
We'll go back into the football side.

We're going to do everything we can
to increase that.

A Champions League spot,
along with other commercial deals,

could generate millions of pounds
for the club.

Well, I think our job now is
to make sure that we do everything we can

to build a squad that's able
to compete on four levels.

So that's both domestic cups,
it's the Premier League

and, of course, the Champions League.

What do you think
will go through Eddie's mind

in terms of next season?

Football managers and footballers
are competitive beasts.

I think Eddie will say to you, we'll want
to attack all four competitions.

We have to be aware that next season
is going to be tough.

It's going to be super tough.
So, we've got to be prepared for that.

We've done a study with clubs
that have qualified for Europe

for the first time in a number of years,

and actually the drop-off
the next season in most cases

is quite significant.

But can you manage to keep
the sustainability of winning

year in, year out?

That's something that's difficult.

It's a challenge.
Next year will be a challenge.

Has Eddie given himself
a little bit of a problem

in the respect that
he's probably well ahead

of where Newcastle fans maybe
expected to be? Is that fair?

Yeah, I think it's totally fair.

The expectations are high.
Now that we're in with the big boys.

When he became head coach,
Eddie Howe moved to Newcastle

with his wife, Vicky, and three sons,

I think it's been forced on them
to a degree, in a sense

that they're around it all the time, like,
I literally have football...

Eddie spent ten years
as manager of Bournemouth.

He left in 2020, after the club
was relegated from the Premier League.

It was sort of a difficult
first few months.

I'd been in football management
for such a long time

that I knew I needed a break.

Initially it was like freedom
to not have to make decisions

and just focus on myself and my family,
it was just a nice release.

Let's reset.

I tried to totally
get away from football

and see if there was another direction
that I wanted my life to go in.

Bought a camper van.
I wanted to go travelling with my kids.

Uh, I think I did one weekend,
one weekend with them in a van,

and, uh...

That was an experience.

So, I missed football
and I wanted to get back.

- Do you wanna be a lay-on player?
- Yeah.

I'd been out of work
for a long period of time.

My name had been almost forgotten.

My management career to here now,
it's ridiculous.

From League Two
to chasing the Champions League,

it's not something you ever expect
when you start on that journey.

You never quite know how long
you're going to be part of that journey,

but I just want to work as hard as I can,

and do the best I can
and see where it takes me.

Playing in the Champions League
could earn the club tens of millions,

but it's the deals they do off the pitch

that will increase their chances
of buying the best players.

Today, members of the board
and executive team

are travelling to Germany,
hoping to finalise a deal

with sports giant Adidas,

which would see them return
as the club kit and technical partner.

So, Peter, first of all,
how long is the journey

- so we know how long we've got?

The deal could be worth
hundreds of millions of pounds

in kit and retail sales
over the next five years.

Just so I can make clear,

this is the biggest deal the club
will have ever done, so...

And to have your brand
associated with something like Adidas

and to suddenly have
Newcastle shirts in China,

Newcastle shirts in shops in Los Angeles,
in New York, in Timbuktu,

that in itself is not just
about selling the product,

but it's the brand awareness
that it creates for us.

I mean, as much as Castore
have been fantastic partners...

And now this is a turning point
just to go even higher.

It's the next step. It's our growth.

it's my job to generate

as much revenue as possible

and also the revenue that we'll earn
from Adidas themselves.

Financially, it's got the potential

A 200-million-pound retail business.

It's so important that the board
are comfortable with the partner

we're choosing to put
at the very heart of the club.

Both parties need to leave that meeting
thinking we can work together.

There's so many people
quietly inside of Adidas

who kind of want this to happen.

When the success kicks in,
the expansion happens.

We have seen the great success
that has been done before,

and this is what
we want to achieve as well.

And with your partnership,
I think it's reachable.

It's like two old lovers getting
back together. That's how I see it.

with Newcastle in the '90s and 2000s,

And some of the key
moments that really stuck out to me

in terms of creating
an iconic Newcastle home kit,

of the future going to look?

And that's going to be somewhat
determined by the decisions we make today.

We had a budget discussion
about Newcastle.

And you lost. And you lost.

So, are you happy with the squad that
is coming together for next year or...?

Yeah, well, we can't spend just
scatter gun, so we've been targeted,

and I think that's the key, now,
this window again,

to look to improve the first 11,

but it's going to take
a decent quality player to do that.

I think the change in ownership
tells us that this is a serious project

and you can see it already now. I mean,
I don't think many people will believe

that they will be where they are.

It's going to be a great thing
for the fan, the club, and us.

Now we just got to push.

So, this relationship's so important to us

because it allows us to really grow
the brand, the commercial value.

And Bjorn, one of the key elements
that excites us about this partnership

is, we need to grow a fan base.

As we know, in football,
it takes a bit of time, success,

to grow in North America and China

and other markets,
so, we're obviously very focused on Saudi

for the reasons of football's number
one, two, and three in the market.

And, of course, Adidas is also
invested in that market

with the Saudi national team, so we feel
there's a good synergy there.

Adidas are going to be marketing
to capture

this 35-million, young demographic.

And as we grow our fan base in Saudi,

that will lead
to more commercial revenues,

which again, from a football perspective,

it's money to be invested
by Eddie and Dan in the team.

so every chance I get,

I was out playing football

I'm from a place called Blyth and I know
it does get a lot of stick sometimes.

Probably back in the '80s,
'90s it was bad,

but I had a great childhood there.

This is Blyth Beach,
so we used to spend loads of time here.

Being working class as well, football's
probably one of the easiest games to play

'cause you just need a ball
and a couple of jumpers.

If I look at, sort of, how far I've come

in this sort of space of time, like,
I do tend to think it's a bit surreal.

Every season there's been players
brought in my position.

So, that's natural.
It's football, isn't it?

You've got your players who are
coming towards the end of careers

and there's going to be players signed,
that's just the way football works.

But it's not a sort of fear that,
oh, they're going to come

and spend 30 million quid
on a player in my position,

'cause as I said,
I'm confident in my ability

and I still feel that I'll play,
I'd back myself ahead of anyone.
