This season we haven't had
to play in Europe,

In Europe, we're going to have
very challenging games

I'd say that non sort of big-six teams
that have broken into the top four,

they usually drop off the next year
because they're stretched thin.

We all know injuries
are a huge risk for us,

given that we don't have
the depth that other teams have.

If there's anything
from an infrastructure standpoint

that we can do to support the club
going into Europe,

that's worth of an investment.

Every single pound we earn this season
is going to be critical.

Every deal we can close off
ahead of that is going to be critical.

Even if we hit Champions League,
there will still be limitations.

has created a special relationship

and their club.

This is a one-club city,

For me, it's that sense of belonging.

was one of their highest priorities.

which speeds up player recovery.

We want to be the best,

To compete with them on the pitch,

you have to be able

So, a training facility
is hugely important.

The work is being carried out
during the season

at a cost of nearly ten million pounds.

We thought at the board level,
we should look at the infrastructure

and make it at par
with the best sporting facilities

And that's why we had
to change the training facilities.

Actually, when I saw it,
I was really happy

because I said,
"Whatever we got to be doing,

it's gonna have a great impact
on the players."

- And that's what's happened.
- It has.

Things we've done, to your point,
the little incremental changes,

we've seen on the pitch
the difference it's made.

So it's about...
We want to do some things here

knowing that, you know,
the future's going to be...

We want to be a top-six,
sustainable team challenging for trophies.

To get to where we want to get to,

It's all about efficiency of spend
and so that goes to things

like improvements we make
to the training ground

to try and give ourselves a boost

in terms of rehabilitation
or preparation for a game,

using every effort you can to get
the maximum out of the player pool.

that is something that always fuels

Single mum, so it was
a hectic household growing up.

I'm the oldest, so technically, you know,
I was like the man of the house.

How does it make you feel,
going home?

Well, it's weird because, you know,
it doesn't really feel like home to me.

It feels like...

somewhere I tried to escape from really,
so to speak.

You know, there was a decision
that I made a few years ago

of coming to Newcastle
or going to Aston Villa.

And Aston Villa was basically home

and everyone was like,
"Ah, you can come home."

But it's not actually something
that I wanted, to be honest.

I worked hard to get away

and I felt like going back
was almost a failure.

So I have mixed feelings, really.

Depends what I'm going back for.

How would you have described
Callum at school?

I would say he was always on the edge of,
but not in the middle of,

probably the more difficult group
of boys in school,

I would say.

Was there ever a time
where you were worried

what road he might go down or...

If I am absolutely honest about it,

I did think it was 50/50.

I really did. I knew he had the talent.

But it's not just about the talent,
it's about what's up there.

You know, even if I'd have known
about Callum's kind of background

before he came to PK,

I don't how confident back then
I would've been

to kind of approach him and say, "Oh,
Callum, you know, are you okay?"

And in terms of having them conversations,

even that's probably something
that was an issue with myself,

that I probably wouldn't open up as much...

Would you have any regrets,
or do you just think, "My life's my life

and I wouldn't be like I am now if all
that hadn't have happened", kind of thing?

In terms of, you know,

- the adversity side of things...
- Yeah.

...I don't have regrets because ultimately,
that is what makes me the character I am.

This is where I used

Was football always
on the cards for you?

It had to be because for me,
there was no other option of anything else

in terms of getting out of the turmoil
that I was living in at the time.

If I didn't have them experiences,
I probably wouldn't have made it

to where I am now,
because I wouldn't have had that fight,

that hunger, that determination,
because ability-wise,

But then your mental strength
and how you handle the setbacks,

that's what takes you to the next level.

How important was it
for Callum Wilson

to come on and get the goal
at the weekend?

Yeah, it's important for Callum,
but I have no hesitation

in backing him and knowing
that the goals will come.

Over the next five days,
the club have got two crucial away games

against West Ham and then Brentford.

In terms of team selection when you've
got Callum Wilson, Alexander Isak,

limited training time, quick turnaround.

Alexander Isak starting
three games in form,

Callum Wilson came off the bench,
scored on Sunday,

and has such a good record
against West Ham.

How difficult a decision
is that for you tomorrow night?

You just made it harder
by saying all that.

Everybody wants
to start the match.

This season, where I went through
a period of time after the World Cup,

you get scrutinised, and it's fine
because that is football.

If you're not doing your job, they'll try
and get someone out to replace you.

You know when you're coming on as a sub,
ok you're going to have to make an impact.

So, majority of the time
when I am on the bench,

I come on and play well,
but it's only because I'm angry.

You playing angry thinking,
"Right, I'm going to score",

and I actually thrive
off proving people wrong.

A much bigger surprise
of Callum Wilson for Alexander Isak.

Isak has been on fire
and you're just thinking, "Wow,

like, this is a big statement
to reinstate Wilson."

Maybe he looks like
he was kind of missing half a yard.

All you can do is do your talking
on the field, you know.

You let your frustrations out
in your performance

and it probably takes you
to another level,

but it's probably having
that same mentality

week in, week out,
even when you are playing.

Callum Wilson, oh, he loves
scoring against West Ham United,

and that's exactly what he's done again.

You can't give him a gift like that.

so, obviously a stadium I know well.

Before taking the role
at Newcastle,

Darren was the president
of MLS team Atlanta United.

He built the club from scratch
from a fan base of zero

to one of the best-supported clubs
in the MLS,

and he did it with the help
of a familiar face.

Here's some good things.

This is when we won MLS Cups
in the second season at Atlanta United.

We're the champions. That's our owner,
Arthur Blank, Josh, his son.

over Arthur's head.

You can do those things to the owner
when you just won the first trophy

in the club's existence.

When I think about Atlanta United,
I went there as employee number one.

So, you know, it was a brand-new club.
There was literally no team,

no stadium, no training ground,
no employees.

You were building
from a blank sheet of paper.

Then when I looked at Newcastle United,
it almost felt like that.

I call it, like, a 130 year-old startup

because it's been around
for all that time.

But this was almost, you know,
a chance to build Newcastle

into one of those top clubs in the world.

Darren needs
to create a buzz around Newcastle,

and we're an amazing club
with a sold-out season ticket.

there's a massive waiting list.

But we want people in America, in,
you know, China, wherever they may be,

to have Newcastle as their team
and the only way we're going to do that,

it's no different from how
we built Atlanta United,

is you've gotta build a connection.

It's a different connection than in the
city, but that's what we're trying to do.

that we retain the sense of being
