about the football games.

I've been looking

Did I ever tell you about a
play we had in high school

called "The Old Double Whammy"?

that needs maintenance.

- Well, it's the
outside of the house.

The paint's all chipping off.

- Is that all?

For gosh sakes, the guys in
the maintenance committee

have been trying to tell us
that for the last five years.

- Well, maybe he's right.

It does look like it could
use a good paint job.

- Yes, sir, I know I'm right.

- Now, just a second.

As a pledge, you're never right.

- Yes, sir.

- However, as a member of
the maintenance committee,

he may have a point there.

- You mean to say we're going
to have to organize a work

party to paint the house?

- It is kind of a depressing
thought, isn't it?

- Now wait a minute, you guys.

Don't give in so easily.

- We don't have any choice.

It's obvious somebody
has to paint the house,

and it's too big a
job for the pledges.

- Well, Wally, old boy,
it looks like you're

going to have to do a
little work after all.

- Don't be too sure about that.

I didn't build up all this
flab from working, you know.

I wouldn't be a bit
surprised if I figured out

a way to paint the house without
any of us lifting a brush.

- That's impossible.

- No, no, maybe
not, not with Wally.

You see, when it comes
to getting out of work,

he is an expert.
- That's right.

In case you haven't
heard, Mr. Plumstead

here is a world's
champion goofer-offer.

- Oh, fellows, you say

- I'm a little
worried about Wally.

- What's the matter,
is he studying?

- No, sir, it's not that bad.

He's down in the basement
painting a moose.

- A moose?

- Not a whole moose,
just the head.

He's painting it blue.

- Are you putting us on?

- Oh, no, sir, I
wouldn't do that.

You can go down and
see for yourself.

- Well, how do you like it?
- Oh, it's beautiful.

What is it?
- Well, what does it look like?

- Well, it looks
like a blue moose.

- Not "a" blue moose,
"the" blue moose.

- Do you think he's
been studying too hard?

- Uh, maybe he hasn't
been eating enough.

- OK, gentlemen, have
your little jokes,

but it may interest you to
know that this blue moose is

going to get our
house painted for us.

- OK, so what's the gag?

- What do you mean
what's the gag?

Haven't you guys ever
heard of the Blue Moose?

It's part of the
campus tradition,

like the Little Brown
Jug or the Victory Ball

or the statue of
William the Silent.

- A Blue Moose?

- Well, sure, haven't
you ever heard of it?

- Frankly, no.

- Well, I guess you
just haven't been

around here as long as I have.

- Nobody has.

- Uh, we'll take
your word for it.

Now, what's this all about?

- Well, as I say, there's an
old tradition between the Betas

and ourselves.

One week out of every year
is known as Blue Moose week.

And during that week,
each house tries

to get possession of the moose.

At the end of the
week, whichever house

has the Blue Moose
is the winner.

- Well, so what?

- So what?

So they get to keep the Blue
Moose all year as a trophy.

- So big deal?

- And they get their house
painted by the losers.

- No kidding?

- Sure, that's part of
the grand old tradition.

- Well, how long has
this been going on?

- Uh, well, what time is it now?

[laughs]

- The only thing,
though, how are we

going to get the Betas
to go along with it?

- Are you kidding?

Their house needs painting
worse than ours does.

- Yeah, but with
the Blue Moose here,

they're going to figure they
don't have much of a chance.

- Don't worry.

I got a few ideas
about that, too.

Well, what do you think?

- Sounds good to me.

- It sounds to me
like we're just trying

to get out of a little work.

I'll tell you this much,
I'm getting a little

tired of this Blue Moose bit.

- Well, why don't we go

what it's all about?

- Well, that's probably just
what they want us to do.

about any Blue Moose.

been around here longer

than anybody,
except maybe Wally.

- Well, there it is.

Where have you guys
been all this time?

- To tell you the
truth, I hadn't

heard about it either
till a couple of days

ago when we found it
down in the basement.

- Uh, uh, it's been
down there for years.

One of the older
fraternity historians

gave us the story on it.
- Yeah.

- That's right, you guys.
- Well, what do you say?

Are you going to let this
grand old tradition die off,

or are you going to
meet the challenge?

- Well, what do you think?

- Well, the paint's
still a little

wet on this grand old
tradition, but I say

let's take them up on it anyway.

- Sounds good to me.

If they want to paint our
house, let them go ahead.

- OK, you guys, you
got yourself a deal.

- Oh, good.

- Well, come on, let's
get back to the house

and start planning our strategy.

- Now, remember, whoever has
the moose in his possession

- Yeah, and you
can use any tricky

means you want to, but
no physical violence.

pick up some ice cream.

a quart of chocolate

and a quart of strawberry.

- That was a kind of a dirty
trick you played on your mother

Wally and the guys

friend off at our house.

- With the Blue Moose.

- You mean, they brought
it over to your house?

- Well, yeah, I thought
you sent them over.

- Well, I didn't know
anything about it.

- They shouldn't have done that.

They tried to stick
me with it first.

They just brought
it over and asked me

if I could keep it
until Saturday noon.

and he said he might send
a couple of guys over here

to pick him up tonight.

- Well, I hope so.

The whole idea is the silliest
thing I ever heard of anyhow.

- Ask the boys if they

and they put the key in a
blue vase over the fireplace.

to do is figure out

a way to get it back.

coming up in a couple of weeks.

- I'm just trying to help
them get the moose back.

- Yeah, but we agreed
no rough stuff.

way to outsmart them.

For instance, I remember a
play we had in high school.

We called it "The

See, uh, during a timeout,
we'd sneak an extra football

onto the field.

Then a halfback would run around
and carrying the wrong football

as a decoy.

While everybody was chasing
him, the quarterback

would run for a touchdown
with the real football.

- What'd you say you called it?

- Uh, "The Old Double Whammy."

- It sounds illegal to me.

- Uh, well, the rules were a
little loose in those days.

[laughs]

- I'll tell you
what, Mr. Nelson.

The next time we challenge
them to a football game,

we'll use your play.

- I thought there
was something fishy

about those guys the minute
they walked in the front door.

for quite a while and have

They pulled a fast
