it started some time ago

at the fraternity, I
guess, wasn't it, Rick?

- Yeah, that's right, Pop.

I was playing cards with some
of the fellas one evening

when Wally called me aside.

- Rick, can I see you a minute?

- I'm playing a hand here.

- Yeah, but this is important.

- Well, this is a good hand.

- A pair of fours?

- Come on,Wally!

- OK, Rick, I need your help.

- Well, if I don't
win this hand,

I won't have any money
to help you with.

- Well, this has nothing
to do with money.

No, it doesn't, and
I don't like the tone

of what you're not saying.

- Look, I'll meet you up--

I don't know anything about it.

- Well, this is

but this seems to combine
the worst features of all

the old favorites.

- Well, it's called

- So you start with a

and then you roll
the dice and try

to get past the Dean's office.

The sorority house

object of the game?

- Well, the object is to get
all the way around the board

and graduate, but the way
Wally has it worked out,

it makes it
practically impossible.

Well, of course, that sort of
expresses his views on college

anyway.

- But he's pretty well
sold on the game, huh?

- Oh, yeah, he
thinks it's great.

- Well, that's only natural
since he invented it.

- Well, yeah, but
it's so complicated.

Hey, here's an idea.

The way he has it, the
only way you can move ahead

is by what you
throw with the dice.

- Yeah?

- Well, I think you ought
to have certain options,

like adding up several throws
to get more combinations.

- Well, how would
that simplify it?

- Well, it wouldn't, but it'd
make it more interesting.

It's sort of like getting extra
credit for outside courses.

- Well, yeah, I suppose so.

- I think I'll write that
down before I forget it.

- I hope you guys
don't mind my breaking

into your sorority house.

I need a couple of these
tomatoes for my salad.

- You know, as long as
I've known your mother,

it's sometimes hard to figure
out whether she's making up

a joke or not.

- Oh, I was just telling
Mom and Dad about the game,

and I drew up a sketch of it.

the game a little better.

- Well, in the first
place, I didn't

like the title, "Graduation."

- What's wrong with it?

- Well, for one
thing, a lot of people

attend college but
never graduate.

I think a better name
would be "Campus."

What's so great about that?

- Oh, I don't say
it's great, but I

think it gives us a little
more identification,

a little more scope.
- Us?

- Well, you know what I mean.

I mean you.

Look, I haven't changed
the fundamentals.

I've just taken your ideas and
worked them around a little.

- Yeah, he and
Rick were upstairs.

- I'm afraid so.

- Well, frankly, we
aren't quite sure.

a look at the game.

I think we've got a real winner.
- What do you mean "we"?

- Rick made some pretty
good suggestions,

so I made him a partner.

Well, we thought
maybe you'd draw up

a partnership agreement for us.

- I thought Ricky
didn't like the game.

- Well, that's what I thought.

Something tells me we have just
drawn a "Confused Parent" card.

"Go back 10 paces to the
television set and forget it."

- And by the time David
saw the game, Wally

and I had it in
pretty good shape.

- That, of course,
was their opinion.

But frankly, I didn't exactly
share their enthusiasm.

- What do you think, Dave?

- Great, huh, Dave?

I think we ought to take out
a patent on it right away,

don't you?

- Well, frankly, no.

- You mean you don't like it?
- Well, that's beside the point.

Taking out a patent
is pretty expensive.

- Well, that shouldn't
present any problem.

I'm sure we won't have
any trouble finding

somebody to lend us the money.

- Well, it's not only
that, but I really

don't think you have to protect
a game like this with a patent,

at least not until you've
shown it to a manufacturer.

In fact, I think that'll
be your main problem--

find somebody who's willing
to look at it, somebody

in that business.

- Well, that's
where you come in.

- Well, I'm not in the
manufacturing business.

- Well, no, not
directly, but I'm

sure you have some contacts
with people in the game business

through the law office.

- Well, yeah, but I don't know
whether they'd be interested.

Well, how do you know until
you present it to them?

- Look, I'll tell you what.

You give us the names, and
we'll make the contacts.

We won't even mention
your name, except to say

that you think
it's a great game,

and it'll make a
fortune for the company.

- Look, I'll tell you what, why
don't you let me look around,

and I'll see what
I can find out?

Don't count on anything.

Even if I do find
somebody, it might

be the wrong time of the
year, or they might already

have a game like this.

I like his attitude,

- No, I think he's
giving it up for tonight.

- Well, I'd like

afraid it's still the same
game with a few new rules.

- It is kind of
interesting, though.

- Well, the basic
idea is OK, but I

don't think it's good
enough to put on the market.

- Well, what especially
don't you like about it?

- Well, for one
thing, kids might not

be too interested in
a college type game,

and kids buy a lot of games.

- Yeah, I guess they do.

- Hey, football.

- What about it?

- Well, that has a lot of crowd
appeal for people of all ages.

- Yeah, I guess it does at that.

And stop worrying about it.

It's not your problem.

- Well, no, but it's
a pretty good thought.

- Where are you going?

- Uh-- uh, Rick.

Well, I say we change this
library into a locker room,

and the football field
would be right along here.

- Well, that's the
usual procedure when

you're going to have breakfast.

- Oh.

- Have you given up the
campus idea entirely?

- Yeah, I guess so.

- Well, no, not entirely.

See, we've used the basic
idea of the original game,

but we've converted
it to football.

It's going to be
pretty exciting.

The kids will love it.

- Uh, Pop figures that kids
are more interested in football

than they are in
going to school.

- Well, how interested are
you kids in having breakfast?

- Oh.

Hey, that gives me
an idea for a card.

"You have broken
training, go directly

to the coach's office."

- Yeah, that sounds good.

Let me see, the
campus will be here,

and the football field
will be right here.

- Yeah, that's right.

You become eligible, then you
go out for spring practice,

and then you get to play.

- We sure got a
little of everything.

- Yeah, we've got
everything except a gimmick.

You know, an attention catcher,
something to set this apart

from other games.

- Well, like what?

- Well, I don't know.

Hey, here's an idea.

We could give out, say,
six or seven football

helmets with every game.

The kids put on the
helmets when they play.

- Oh, great, and the game
will sell for $57.85.

- They are kind of expensive.

- You better get this
table cleared off.

Breakfast is just about ready.

- What are you
doing up so early?

Did you forget it was Saturday?

- Well, no, we were up
kind of late last night,

and so I told June to sleep and
that I'd get my own breakfast.

manufacturing
companies, did you?

- Well, gee, Pop,
give him a chance.

- It's kind of a small
outfit, but I know

they're open for new ideas.

- Gee, I didn't think you'd
care much for the game.

- Well, I didn't at first.

But then I got to
thinking about it,

and it might have
possibilities, especially

with a couple of changes
I was going to suggest.

- I was thinking, maybe
the campus idea might not

have a broad enough appeal.

idea-- a spaceship game.

Everybody's interested

can be outer space.

the classrooms to planets.

- As long as you're not busy,
would you climb up on the roof

and get my rocketship?

- A lot of people don't
like the idea of using dice.

- The moon, we can
circle around the moon.

See, once you're blasted
through the radiation belt,

then you're free to land
on any planet you choose.

- Unless, of course,
it's already occupied.

- Well, yeah, if one
of the other players

beat you to the planet you've
selected, you can't land there.

- Now I see.

- Then you have to orbit
the planet, return to Earth,

and blast off all over again.

- Well, unless, of course,
you're lucky enough

to have established
a Space Station,

and you can land and refuel.

- I see.

- It's pretty exciting.

And the one who gets back to
Earth with the most footballs

wins.

A touchdown, uh, of planets.

- Tell them about
the moons on Saturn.

- You already have.

- Yes.

- Well, that's about it.

- Well, what do you
