- Oh, not for a

You know Wally.

He's never been on time
for anything in his life.

[doorbell ringing]

Hey, pop?

That's Wally and the girls.

Will you tell them
I'll be right down?

- OK.

Hi, come on in.

- Hi, Mr. Nelson.

- I've been instructed to
tell you he'll be right down.

- You mean he isn't ready yet?

- No, not quite.

- [laughs] Well, come

- I understand you're all
going to an art show tonight.

- Oh, yeah, we're going to
pick up a little culture.

interested in that sort

- Especially when it's free.

You know darn well I didn't know
it was free when I said I'd go.

- You mean you didn't
know it was an art show.

- By the way, Ginger's
cousin's one of the artists.

- Oh, is that so.

- Well, we're not really sure.

At least he's got a
beard and some sandals,

and he needs a haircut.

- Well, that's a good start.

- He really is quite
serious about it.

He's done some very
interesting things,

or at least so I understand.

- Where is the show being held?
- Down at the art school.

- They're showing work from
all the different classes.

- Oh, that should
be very interesting.

- Hey, why don't you and Mr
Nelson come along with us?

- Yeah, why don't you?
- Oh, no, thank you.

He's going bowling tonight, and
that's about all the culture

he can take for one week.

- Hi.

interesting things here.

- Yeah, I wish I knew
more about this stuff.

- Well, I'm getting used to it.

confused me a little,

but now I'm
beginning to like it.

I'm looking for my
cousin, Brian Mayfield.

He's one of the students here.

- I don't think I know him.

He's probably in one
of the other classes.

exhibits across the hall.

know why, but there

seems to be a popular
misconception that artists are

necessarily a little strange.

Well, actually, most
of us are quite normal.

- Hey, that's a pretty crazy
looking pipe you have there.

- Thank you.

I got it at a little
shop down the street.

I got these sandals there, too.

- How about that?

- Would you like me
to show you around?

- That would be great.
- That would be wonderful.

- Well, look, I'll

- Oh, yes, I would.

- You have the kind of
paintings that confuse me.

Can you explain this?

- Well, there's not
much to explain, really.

It's totally abstract,
of course-- unfettered,

free from any semblance
of limitation.

I do think it radiates a certain
amount of disseminated energy,

however.

- Yeah, I was just
going to mention that.

Why don't I go help
Rick with the punch?

- Well, here's something
you might find interesting.

- Hey, Wally?

- Yeah?

- What do you really
think of this?

- Well, now that I've
seen Ginger's cousin,

this doesn't look so bad.

- I'll be right with you.

- I was just taking another
look at "Untitled Number Four."

- Thank you, I'm flattered.

Starting to grow on
you a little, huh?

- Yeah, I must admit it is.

- It doesn't look like a
flaming pomegranate, does it?

joker just called it.

But that's the
fun of modern art:

it can mean something
different to everybody.

What does it look like to you?

- Well, it doesn't really
look like anything--

I mean, anything specific.

But I like the way
the lines go together.

I don't know if
that means anything

- Oh, yes, I think it kind of
hangs together nicely, myself.

Does it look happy to you?

- Well, yeah-- that
is, sort of optimistic.

Of course, I don't
really know too much

about this sort of thing.

- Well, if you
know what you like,

at least that's a good start.

A point of departure,
as they say.

- Well, yeah, I guess so.

- You know, I almost sold
this a little while ago.

- Oh, no kidding?

- Yeah, he offered me a
good price for it, too,

but I'll be darned if
I'm going to sell it

to somebody who thinks
it's a flaming pomegranate.

It's just that some of these
artists seem a little kooky.

pretty good salesmen, though.

beginning to like this thing.

That's probably because
I like odd shapes.

[laughs] That's no
reflection on you, honey.

- Speaking of shapes.

- I like this pretty
nice, don't you?

- I suppose so, if you
like that sort of stuff.

Frankly, it doesn't
do too much for me.

- Well, that's probably because
you don't understand it.

- Do you understand it?

- Well, not exactly, but
I have a general idea

of what she's trying to do.

- But you don't know
whether you like it or not.

- Well, not yet.
That's why I'm taking it home.

- Don't you think
that's kind of silly,

to buy something
when you don't know

whether you like it or not?

- Well, I haven't bought it.

I just got it on approval.

Besides, I don't dislike it.

Heck, the more I look at it,
the more I think I do like it.

- Yeah, he just
doesn't know why.

pretty good idea.

Well, whatever it is, you'll
have to get it off the table

and put a leash on it.

- I got it at the art exhibit.

- Well, yeah, it
has possibilities.

A little whipped cream
here, some chocolate

syrup there, and
a cherry on top,

and you may have something.

- Sounds pretty
indigestible to me.

- In the meantime,
what will you have?

- I'll have my usual, a
cheeseburger and a malt.

- That sounds good.

- Yeah, I'll have the same.

How about you, Roberta?

- I don't care for
anything, thanks.

- OK.

- You know, I really am
beginning to like this.

What do you think?

Well, never mind.

I've had bad luck with
that question, all evening.

- No, no.

I-- kind of like it, I think.

- You did say it
was on approval?

- Your enthusiasm
is overwhelming.

- I guess I just
don't understand it.

What did Roberta think of it?

- Well, I don't think she
was exactly crazy about it.

Or maybe she wasn't exactly
crazy about the girl

who did it.
- Oh.

- Or should we say "uh-oh"?

- I don't think it's that bad.

I probably did spend a
little more time with Lori

than I should have.

That's her name, Lori West.

- You mean the artist?

- Yeah.

- Well, I hope Roberta
wasn't too upset about it.

- Well, she wanted to
be, but fortunately,

when I took her home, there
was a little soft music coming

from the house, and
the moon was out,

so she finally
weakened and agreed

to shake hands good night.

- That sounds promising.

- But we've all got dates to
see a movie tomorrow night,

so I guess everything
will be all right.

- You mean Wally and
Ginger, and you and Roberta?

- Oh, yeah, not the artist.

- Well, I hope not.

- Tell me, do you like this
whatever-it-is well enough

to have a fight with
Roberta about it?

- Well, I'm not sure
whether I like it

at all, now that I got at home.

But I don't want
Roberta to think

I'm taking it back just because
she started to pout a little.

- Well, sometimes girls are
funny about things like that.

She knows you'll have
it here in your room,

and it's a little like having
another girl's picture.

- I guess you're right.

to see this other girl again.

- Well, I'm just
trying to be helpful.

- Well, I really do like it.

very interesting.

take her to the movies tomorrow

- Ah, gee, that's great.

- Oh.

- Well, I did some of

were done by friends.

- This was done by one of our
most talented young action

painters?

- Action painter?

- Yes, you know,
abstract expressionist?

- Oh, yeah.

- You can see he's been
influenced by de Kooning,

but he's obviously
breaking away.

- Well, how can you tell that?

- Well, mostly by the way
he handles negative space.

- Oh.

- Oh, am I confusing you?

- Yeah, a little bit.

- Well, good.

That gives me a
feeling of security.

- Here, take a look at this one.

This is one of my favorites.

- Oh yeah, I kind of like that.

- Well, that's OK, Rick.

As I say, I'm not too

under the spell of soft

what "Number Five" looks like.

of the German
Expressionist paintings.

There was a wonderful
show in town last month.

You've probably heard of him.

- Well, not exactly.

He's the center on
the football team.

He calls the defensive signals.

He blocked three
punts last year.

- Oh, good for him.

- Oh, yeah.

- That's an attractive
girl he's with.

- Yeah, she was with
us the other night.

- Yeah, she's here with
that crazy cousin of hers.

She even let him use the
ticket she bought for me.

- Oh, this is great.

Everybody's here with
the wrong people.

- Well, what do you mean?

You've got Lori.

She looks like a
real swinger to me.

- Yeah, she's OK.

It's just that-- well, I
know this is awful to say,

but she's not
quite as attractive

when you get her away from
those artistic surroundings.

- [laughs] You mean you fell for
the Bohemian atmosphere and not

for the girl?
- Yeah, something like that.

At any rate, I know I'd
rather be here with Roberta.

- Well, to tell you the truth,
I'd rather be here with Ginger.

Hey, here's an idea.

Why don't you take Roberta
and I'll take Ginger?

- Oh, yeah, that's great,
but in the first place,

I'm here with Lori, and
you're here with Roberta.

And in the second
place, the girls

may not even want us
in the first place.

- I'm sure you can say that

fascinated by it.

I thought it had
a lot of strength.

I was trying for something
a little different.

- Oh, I think it's awfully good.

I especially like the way it
attacked the negative space.

- I'm so glad you liked
it, but I honestly

don't feel it was quite
as well resolved as some

of the other things I've done.

- Oh, really?

Well, sometimes I think
we have a tendency

to be our own severest critics.

I know I get quite
frustrated myself, at times.

- Oh no, go right ahead.

- Oh, sure.

painting do you do?

- Well, at the moment, that's
a pretty good question.

- Wally?

- Oh, not at all.

- Oh, sweetie pie,

are getting along pretty well.

- I must admit, I feel a
little guilty about that.

did a lot of plotting

to get those two together.
