In this lecture let's go ahead and let's talk about makeup a little bit.

So if you're doing female characters a lot of times they're going to kind of appear like they're wearing

makeup and sometimes you might not want them to look like they're wearing makeup but you want kind of

that natural makeup look.

And so we're going to talk about that a little bit because when it comes to drawing character designs

and makeup you don't actually want to draw the way it's done in real life.

You want to simplify so you don't want to do all this eyeshadow and contouring.

You don't want to do individual eyelashes usually sometimes you can but you want to simplify as much

as possible.

So let's go ahead and let's start with the eye.

So when we're drawing the eye gonna go ahead just draw a kind of a very simple sort of Disney esque

type.

I just do the top eyelid like that the bottom eyelid like this that'll kind of come down into a point

therefore the tier duct

All right.

So there is kind of a simple Disney type I mean we can go ahead and draw on the IRS so nice big circle.

Go ahead Mark in the pupil and then go ahead and draw in some sort of a reflection there.

All right great.

So when we're drawing makeup or we want to do is we want to simplify so for example one way that we

can simplify the eyelashes and if they're wearing mascara and their eyelashes just look a little bit

darker then we can go ahead and just simplify that into something simple like like basically just a

shape like this

and we can go ahead and darken that and

we can see we can just.

It's just completely simplified.

We're not going in there and drawing every individual eyelash in now that's not to say that you can't

do that if you want to.

So for example we could still do that but let's keep it even still simple.

We don't need to go ahead and draw every single eyelash in like we would do if we're trying to draw

a realistic eye.

We can just do a few in there so I can just kind of make them a little bit thicker and fatter

or something kind of like that.

So we do have to draw all those eyelashes in there for the bottom eyelid we can do the same thing you

just do a dark line like this and it just have to go all the way across here.

We can just simplify it and just kind of give the idea of the top eyelash in the bottom eyelash but

we'd have to draw that all the lines for the side of the eye so I can kind of like draw some lines in

there but I want to keep it really light.

I don't even really need to draw the tier duct in there I can just keep it nice and light.

It's gotten draw in this Iris just so we can kind of see her eye a little bit better suit it looks like

controlled pupil

right so there we go.

So there's kind of some basic makeup on an eye and you can just draw this really quickly too and so

make it look like it's makeup just by drawing like a quick eyelash like that for the top cooking for

the bottom.

And once you kind of decide what your eyes are gonna be shaped like you can quickly kind of just sketch

eyes out just put you in kind of a bottom line and the top line for the bottom and top eyelash and figure

out where pupil and all that will go.

Another part about this is drawing the eyebrows.

So when it comes to drawing your eyebrow you could just draw the individual hairs and you could also

make it make it look like the eyebrows weren't plucked.

There's nothing wrong with that.

Just depends on what you want your character to look like.

But if you wanted to look like makeup you don't need to drive individual hair and there what you want

to do is you want to just simplify it into a shape.

So for example we could go ahead and just kind of draw kind of a drawn on eyebrow like this.

Right above her eye and then you can just fill that in

so once you get your shape down figure out what you want the shape of the eyebrow to be.

You don't really need to worry too much about drawing individual hairs or anything like that you just

need to worry about the shape and how it wraps around the brow.

All right.

Now let's have a look at another eye.

So just another example because these are kind of more Disney ask let's say you wanted to do something

maybe a little bit more realistic sort of so we could draw and I kind of like this.

So start with the top eyelash and then I'll kind of draw out what the bottom eyelid is going gonna be

like

and like that and then I'll draw my top eyelid top eyelid will be something like that get my eyebrow

up here

I can go and draw the Iverson

right.

Go ahead and draw the Iverson before like let's finish drawing the whole eye before we add the makeup

to it real quick.

All right.

So there we go.

So we draw our eyebrow and what we can do is we can just really sharpen up that shape to make it look

like it's kind of more drawn on

and then for the eyelashes we can go ahead and just kind of do a thick shape like this.

So this sort of the eyelashes that kind of go up boobs kind of go out like this.

Also on that sign

like that.

So that's just kind of a slightly more realistic looking I still like kind of more in the animation

style but it's not as cartoony as that we can see that even with an eye that looks a little bit more

realistic like this.

We can still simplify our design.

All right.

Now lastly let's go ahead and talk about the lips.

There's not much to talk about it just really if you want the lips to look like they're wearing makeup.

All you have to do is just kind of make them look dark.

So go ahead just sketch out some LEDs kind of from a three quarter view.

This

and then you can just go ahead and darken in those lips.

Probably usually want to make sure that the top lip is a little bit darker

for the bottom lip what you can do is if you want the lips to look wet or make them look like they're

glossy or something like that can go ahead and just kind of add a highlight.

So an exaggerated version of this would be kind of like an oval like that you could darken underneath

it like that and then you can go ahead just fill in the value around that I'll just take my graphite

pencil and just kind of outline the crease of the mouth just so it kind of all stands out a little bit

better.

Which that's another thing is if you're using color you'd obviously use skin tones and stuff like that

for these lines for the eyelids you probably use browns and stuff like that darker colors where you

wouldn't use black you reserve black for things like the eyelashes.

So for example I can really make these eyelashes stand out if I use this graphite on them so now they

stand out a little bit more from the blue.

You could even do the same thing for the eyebrows

which that's a really big thing about makeup as makeup is trying to achieve contrast.

So we talked about contrast earlier in all the different types makeup is usually trying to achieve a

value contrast so a dark and a light contrast.

That's why we often see makeup around the eyes where it makes the eyes look really dark or at least

eyelashes are really dark because it makes the white of the eyes kind of stand out a little bit more.

So that's just a few notes about makeup.

So just keep that in mind moving forward.
