In this lecture we're gonna learn how to draw noses.

So let's go ahead and get started.

So we're to start with a facing forward nose.

Now just like everything else.

Always remember that everybody's body parts are completely different.

So there's different types of noses out there so I definitely recommend that you look at some reference

but just as a general rule of thumb.

This is how you want to draw noses.

So almost anyway you draw nose usually want to start off with a circle or some sort of a diamond shape.

So in this case we got to start off with a circle so I just draw a circle like this.

That's a really good base for my nose.

And from there I can go ahead and come about two thirds down and draw a line across like that and I'm

actually gonna kind of curve that.

So a curve that way and that way.

So it's just a very slightly curved line.

And we want to decide where the outside edges of our nostrils will be so let's say right there and right

there we want to keep it even on both sides.

Something like that.

And then from there we can go ahead and angle or lines up like this and like that and then on the bottom

side we basically want to have a straight line here and then connect that there and there and then from

the circle we can go ahead draw kind of a slightly curved outline like this

right.

And so what we've done is we've kind of figured out and blocked out what the shapes and forms are going

to be.

So you can see that this area right here this is basically going to be our bottom surface.

So we can really shade that out but then the nose kind of gets broken up into a few more planes here.

And so what we get is we kind of get a darker area right underneath in this area underneath that circle

on a darker area right underneath there.

And this kind of angles down into the middle part of the nose like that.

And this area up here can kind of fade into that shadow scene with right there

and sometimes you might even want to make the shadow a little bit more curved downwards like that so

sometimes I have an angle up like that and that and then angled downwards then you can go ahead and

draw and your nostril holes so the nostril holes will kind of be a little bit below this line and though

kind of line up and curve with this line right there that we just drew coming off the circle do the

same thing on this sign

and then you want that shadow to just kind of fade out from underneath it.

This part of the nose kind of wraps down and around up into it like that

you get a slightly curved line down there.

I want to get a little bit of shadow on the side of nostrils

right.

And there you go.

So there is kind of the basic idea of how to draw the nose.

So what if we want to draw a nose from the side or we can kind of follow the same formula.

So we can draw a circle first that then we'll have a line coming off.

Now depending on the nose you'll have different profiles so in this case I'm just gonna draw a straight

line coming off like that.

And then let's go ahead and we can draw a shape coming off like this a kind of a curved line coming

down like that the outside edge of the nose and we can mark where we want our nostril edge to be so.

And maybe we'll angle that in a little bit more for this nose and then that'll angle up like this and

then angle down here like that.

And from this view you'll kind of get this sort of a shape going on there and that's all in shadow that's

kind of the bottom surface of the nose.

Now for the tip of the nose you can do all kinds of different things.

You don't just have to stick with this circle you can kind of make it pop off like a square or you can

kind of make it a little bit more angular so in my case I'm gonna make it a little bit more angular

so maybe I would actually bring this line up like that.

All right.

And then we also have the Phil drone so that piece that comes off between your nose and your lips and

then just kind of curved like that.

And that would curve up into your upper lip like we drew before right.

And then from the side we can go ahead and draw the nostril and so the nostril be something very similar

to the front view

and draw the side of the nostril like this

now typically you're going to get a little divot right here where that circle is something like that

we can bring the shadow up onto the side of the nostril a little bit like that little shadow there as

well.

And that would just kind of run up into the bridge of the nose and the fore head.

So there's the nose from the side.

Now I'm a little bit of a big nose but that's okay.

There's different types of noses.

All right.

Next.

Let's talk about how to draw the nose from a three quarters view.

So it's gonna to be very similar so we start with the circle like this and then we have that line.

This line right here.

But what we want to do is we want it to kind of curve around so something like that and you can see

that on this side.

It's a little bit more squashed on that side it's a little bit more stretched out because we're gonna

be doing it from that angle.

All right.

Next what we want to do is let's go ahead and mark out the sides of our nostrils so we'll say right

there and go up like that.

We'll do another one right over here.

That'll go up like that as well.

But because of the angle we're looking at the set because of the perspective that line is actually gonna

kind of touch or appear to be touching the edge of that circle because as it moves around that circle

will kind of move over the other line back here all right.

Now we can draw the lines coming off like this

and then we'll go ahead and draw the bottom surface it's just something like that and this nostril hole

will be kind of squashed or something we can kind of like that.

And we'll do the same thing on this side I just like to use this circle as a guide as to where those

nostril holes should kind of run.

We can kind of angle this downwards a little bit.

We can go ahead and round out the sides of the nostril.

Now we go ahead in shade in this bottom area.

And this part right here the middle of the nose.

It actually kind of wraps down like this.

And I actually kind of moves up into the nostrils so kind of like that.

You can get a line going like that

can go and shade up onto the side of the nose as well.

So there's kind of a three quarters view of a nose.

Now lastly let's kind of talk about when you're drawing character notes.

There's lots of different styles we're going to talk about those styles later but the main thing I want

you to understand is that when you're drawing characters you really just want to try to simplify things

as best as possible.

So for example we can just start by drawing knows if we're doing a Disney character style.

Now we could just start by drawing an overlay like that and then just kind of angling a little point

down here at the bottom right.

And you can kind of just draw a little nostril hole and here

like that and you get the front of the nose right there side of the nostril right here.

Right.

And then the top surface you'd really exaggerate it.

So this surface right here would get really flat on top

and then you could go ahead and just kind of draw a line like this just kind of indicate where the bottom

surface of this nose is.

She that in

that runs up into kind of the eyebrows and you'd have an irate here and all that good stuff.

But you can see how we can take a complicated nose that looks more realistic and really kind of simplify

it down into something simple that's easy and quick to draw.

This is just one example of a style but most character design styles can be broken down into more simple

looking structures than the actual thing.
