Now let's go ahead and move on to learning more about the details of drawing the human form.

So we're going to start with the human head so to draw the human head.

I like to draw and sale of the Loomis head.

So if any of you have ever read the book by Andrew Loomis about how to draw the human head and you'll

be familiar with this but it's a simple sort of structure you can follow so that you can draw ahead

with the right proportions and then based off this head you can change things you can adjust things

but this will give you a good base for understanding how to draw the human head.

So let's go ahead and get started by drawing a circle it's just as simple as that.

So I get to draw a circle

about that size and you get these nice circles make sure that you're drawing from your shoulder and

not from your wrist.

All right.

So there we go.

That's pretty decent looking circle.

Go and just darken in the edges a little bit more.

Next what we want to do is you basically want to sketch out a square inside of this.

This is how I like to think about it it's just a square.

So if we were to draw a line from here to here and then connect them from corner to corner so that each

corner was touching the edge of the circle you can see that that would make kind of a rectangle shape.

We don't want that we want to make sure that it's as close to a square as possible because that's going

to give us some pretty good looking proportions.

So something like this.

So we just want to fit a square right inside that circle.

All right.

Great.

So what this is doing is it's giving us four different lines and each one of these lines are going to

be part of drawing the head.

So the first two lines these lines right here we're basically slicing those off.

So if we could think of this circle as a cylinder we're basically slicing these edges off to make a

flat surface on the side of the cylinder so if you wanted to you could even go ahead and just kind of

race out those sides just so we get a little bit of a better view of that.

Right.

And then this line up here that's going to be our hairline and that's going to be our nose line.

We're going to talk about that yet because that's gonna be for the face but we still want to mark all

this stuff out when we're drawing the head.

Now help us give us a good base for things such as where the chin should be and all of that.

So once we've done that we're gonna mark out the eyebrow line so we're gonna divide this box in half

horizontally just like that and we're gonna go ahead and put a line right down the center and it's going

to represent the center of our face next what we want to do is we want to take the same distance.

So the distance between the nose line which is this bottom line here and the eyebrow line that should

be the same distance as the distance between the eyebrow line and the hairline.

And we want to take that same exact distance and move it down here for the bottom of the chin.

So the way we can do that if we want is we can go and just mark it out with the tip of our pencil and

then mark the other edge with our finger move it down to give us a good idea of where that should be.

And that's going to be our chin next.

Let's go ahead and let's draw the jaw so the jaws can come in many different shapes and sizes.

So in this case we're just gonna do something pretty generic but after this lecture I'm going to give

you an assignment and I want to have you draw different people's faces and I want you to copy their

jaw lines and features like that so that you really get a good idea of the differences between different

peoples faces or I guess not their faces but their heads because they're focusing on heads right now.

So there's our jaw.

Next let's go ahead and drawn the ears.

So I'm gonna go ahead

and draw it right there.

And the way we know that year goes right there is that the top of that year should never go past this

line right here that represents where the eyebrows will be.

So go ahead draw the other one as well.

And they're just kind of sort of half ellipses in the bottom of that year should never go past the nose

line.

If you go any larger than that you're going to look like your character has really big years which maybe

that's what you want but just so you know if you're drawing with correct proportions that's about how

big that year should be.

Then let's go ahead and draw the neck.

So if this is a male the neck will be a little bit thicker so you could have it come all the way off

the sides of the head if you wanted.

If they have a really thick neck.

But in general you're probably gonna come in just a little bit further somewhere about there and we

can just kind of draw a line out like this.

No just give it kind of a nice curved shape down here at the bottom and make it look like a cylinder

I guess.

Great.

Then we can go ahead darken and all our lines that we want to keep that are pretty important somewhere

to kind of round that shape out right there on the corner of the head this might be looking a little

bit too stretched out.

But keep in mind that I'm drawing this with my head a little bit further back.

Typically my head would be over the paper so I'm making sure I'm drawing this correctly.

So I draw like this things tend to stretch out just a little bit.

But it should still be following the correct proportions.

It just might be that I base it off of an over other than a circle.

And so as you can imagine they're probing knows right there.

Use that line as the nose line.

The eyebrows ago right here.

These lines would have an eye there an eye there and we'll get more into that in the next lecture.

Now let's go ahead and let's talk about how to draw the head from a side view a profile view.

So we're drawing it from a side view rather than just drawing a circle.

We want to start with an oval because the skull is actually looks more like an oval and you look at

it from the side.

It's not necessarily a round shape.

So let's go ahead and the strong oval and to try to draw about the same size circle.

So it kind of off the top to line up as well as the bottom.

So just to draw some straight lines over just to make sure I'm kind of following that

all right.

So there we go.

So we have a basic oval now.

Next what I'm going to do is I'm going to go ahead and slice off this edge.

So if you remember we kind of sliced off an edge right there off the side of that sphere.

Well now we're looking at this it's kind of more of an egg shape now.

And we want to slice it off but it's going to be more towards the back of the skull.

So it's is gonna be a circle

kind of like that.

We can kind of line the top of that up in the bottom of that.

So we know where that should kind of be sliced off.

So I think this action needs to be brought down just a little bit more.

All right.

So when we're looking at this slice off piece right there from the side it appears to be a circle because

this is a round surface.

And so when we slice a straight piece off of that it comes off as kind of a circle.

So that's kind of the side plate of the face.

Next let's go ahead and draw a line down coming down like this for the front of the face so this would

be the center line.

But we're seeing it from the side view.

So just comes down like that.

Another reason why we need to make sure that this circle is pushed back that way a little bit is because

we're going to mark and plus sign right through the center of that and that point right there is going

to basically represent where our jaw line is going to go to.

So we can go ahead and draw a line can be straight out like this.

That'll be our nose line.

This line right here coming off the center of that circle.

That'll be the eyebrow line.

And then the line coming off the top of this circle.

That'll be the hairline.

So next let's go ahead and take the distance from here to here.

It's a little bit off some kind of a go ahead measure that pencil.

Move it down just like that.

And now that's going to be the bottom of our chin.

So now we can go ahead and draw our jaw back to that point

and go ahead and sketch in our ear which is going to be in this bottom left corner of the circle

so that

next let's go and sketch in that neck.

So we're just gonna kind of draw a straight line coming off of the bottom of the chin and then we want

the neck to kind of start about in the middle of the jar right here.

So probably some maybe a little bit further back but somewhere right about there and then we have the

back of the neck come right off the skull so kind of curves off like that and then comes down

and then we can just go ahead and darken our lines in to kind of solidify that and again depending on

who you're drawing and whether it's a male or a female the jaw line is gonna tell a lot about the person.

So your assignment after this is going to be to draw from some photographs that I have in the resources

and try different jaw lines and stuff like that.

All right great.

So like I said your assignment is gonna be to go to the resources of this lecture and I want you to

go ahead and download the two photographs of the male and the female face and I want you to try to redraw

them as the Loomis head.

But what I want you to do is I want you to pay attention to their proportions their shapes and I want

you to look at their jaw line.

Try to copy their jaw line onto the Loomis head.

Pay attention to their proportions you know like maybe their head doesn't have an oval shape here maybe

their head is a little bit more flat so maybe you could just start off with a circle and their face

would be a little bit closer and their jaw would be a little bit more shallow.

I want you to pay attention to those things and try to copy things like their jaw lines the size of

their your stuff like that.

As best you can.
