has now been
officially classified

by the national weather service

as a category 5 hurricane,

and initial estimates of
damage here are staggering.

Numbers released this morning

by the federal emergency
management agency

say the death toll may
reach as high as 1500,

with a missing persons
list exceeding 700,

and tens of thousands

of displaced and
homeless victims

preparing to leave behind

everything they loved
about the big easy,

to begin a new life
somewhere down the road

that will be anything but easy.
